Steven M. Mendelson

NEW LONDON - Steven M. Mendelson died suddenly on Oct. 29, 2001 in Concord.

He was born in New York City on July 15, 1942, son of Siegfried Kurt and Celia Sommerfeld Mendelson.

He served the Barn Playhouse in New London, N.H., as a theatrical administrator and associate producer and business manager for more than 30 years. He graduated from the City College of New York and Columbia University. He earned his Master of Science degree from Columbia University in 1967 and a master's degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers' College in 1968.

A resident of New London since 1974, Mendelson held many New London town offices. He had served as town treasurer since 1997. He was an energetic community leader and received the N.H. Municipal Association's "Outstanding Municipal Volunteer Award" in 1996. He served on the Town Hall Refurbishers and the New London Area Chamber of Commerce and was treasurer for New London Hospital's rummage sales for a number of years.

He had served as a ballot clerk since 1962 and on the New London Bandstand Committee since 1986. He was a member of the New London Historical Society's board of directors and secretary to the New London Area Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of SKIT (Sunapee-Kearsarge Intercommunity Theatre) and with the New London Hospital Auxiliary. He worked as business manager of the Theatre by the Sea regional theatre in Portsmouth for two seasons.

He earned the New London Rotary Club Community Award in 1997, and in that decade he was elected to the New England Theatre Conference (NETC) College of Fellows, an honorary society that acknowledges outstanding service to the profession of theatre.

He is credited with having introduced the idea of bringing a bandstand back to New London's town common. He served as chairman of the committee that was established to design, fund and build what would come to be known as the Mary Haddad Memorial Bandstand. He had served as emcee for the concerts ever since the inception of the annual summer concerts.

Surviving members of his family include a cousin, Anne Halliwell, of Irving-on-Hudson, N.Y.

MENDELSON - Steven M. Mendelson died suddenly on Oct. 29, 2001, in Concord. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 31, 2001, at the New London Barn Playhouse, Main Street, New London, N.H. Burial will be in West Part Cemetery, New London. Chadwick Funeral Service of New London, N.H., is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Herman W. Remick

BREMERTON, Wash. - The Rev. Herman W. Remick, 89, of Bremerton, died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1912, in Eliot, Maine, the son of the late Frank and Minnie (Rowe) Remick. He was married to Thelma (Rowe) Remick on June 1, 1938, in Eliot.

He attended school in New Hampshire. He was a member of the U.S. Navy reserve and served from 1943 to 1946.

He was a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring in 1962.

His hobbies were gardening and his work in ministry.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Daniel Herman Remick of Panama City, Fla.; his daughter, Sylvia Peterson of Bremerton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; his sisters, Alice Byers of Kittery, Maine, and Doris Crowley of Portsmouth, N.H.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara J. Remick; his son, Edward W. Remick; two infant children; his brothers, Irvin, Norman and Frank Remick; and his sister, Ethel Devore.

Funeral services will be held Friday in Washington.

Ruth Smith, RN

MADISON, N.J. - Ruth Blaisdell Alpaugh Smith, of 23 Fairview Drive, died on Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, in Exeter, N.H., following complications of a broken hip.

Born in Round Valley, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Cyrus H. and Otella Cox Alpaugh. She was reared in Round Valley and Portsmouth, N.H.

Mrs. Smith, a registered nurse, was educated at Northfield Seminary for Girls (now associated with Mount Hermon School, Northfield, Mass.), and at St. Mary's Free Hospital for Children in New York City. She was a gifted nurse, having practiced at Orange Memorial Hospital and at All Souls' Hospital in Morristown, N.J.

In 1933, she was married to Maurice Basil Smith, who predeceased her in 1985. Together they raised two daughters, Ruth Donais of North Hampton, N.H., and Ann Buys of Columbia, S.C. Besides her two daughters and their husbands, Robert Buys and Norman Donais, she leaves seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her beloved and devoted companion, John Teshima of Madison, who saved her life from fire in December 2000.

She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Smith was an early volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and also a member of the Madison Presbyterian Church for 65 years. She gave generously of her nursing talents, skills and knowledge. She was a true friend and neighbor and a deeply beloved and devoted mother and grandmother. She will be sorely missed.

SMITH - Ruth Smith of Madison, N.J., died Oct. 29, 2001, at the Exeter Health Care. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Services will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Madison, N.J., on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Lebanon, N.J. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Louise C. Tilton

PORTSMOUTH - Louise C. (Locke) Tilton, 84, of 928 South St., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

She was born in Boston, Mass., on May 17, 1917, the daughter of the late Frederick and Anna (Dodge) Locke and attended Portsmouth schools.

Mrs. Tilton was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Ferrelli of Barrington, and Lorna R. Caffrey and her husband, Patrick of Middleton; grandchildren, Shirley Jones of Tallahassee, Fla., James Gillingham of Manchester, Michelle Cochran and her husband, Tony, of Bryson City, N.C., and Beverly Caffrey of Middleton; seven great-grandchildren; and a niece, Arlene Burt of Portsmouth.

TILTON - Louise C. (Locke) Tilton, 84, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Oct. 30, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home today (Wednesday), from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Joan Wiese

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Joan Trapp Wiese, 74, known to family and friends as Jakki, died at her home in York Harbor on Oct. 17, 2001.

Born and raised in Laconia, N.H., she attended local schools and received her bachelor's degree in journalism from Simmons College in Boston, Mass., in 1948. She was secretary to the president of MIT until she left the United States in the fall of that year and traveled to Norway to visit friends. She went to work for the American Embassy in Oslo, and it was in Norway that she met her husband-to-be, Claus Wiese, whom she married in 1950.

The couple returned to this country in 1951, settling in the Boston area where Mrs. Wiese worked as an assistant to the cartoonist Al Capp. After living in the Boston area for several years, they moved to Poland Spring, where she was "Joan Knight," the late-night weather forecaster for WMTW TV.

The Wieses were a skiing family and traveled every weekend to ski at the newly opened Sunday River. In 1961 the couple moved their young family to Bethel, where they owned and operated the Norseman Inn for 25 years.

Mrs. Wiese had a love for learning, and in her early 50s she returned to school at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she earned her master's degree and began work on her doctorate in behavioral science. She practiced counseling in the Bethel area.

In later years, she moved to the Maine/New Hampshire Seacoast area in order to be closer to her family. She was an active volunteer in several community programs until her health forced her to retire.

She leaves three children, Pipp Wiese of Lancaster, N.H., Kristin Wiese-Adelman of Rollinsford, N.H., and Peter Wiese of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Virginia Rice of Boylston, Mass., and Constance MacCrate of Plandome, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren whom she adored and who adored her: Brett Saunders, Tucker, Zoe, Satchel and Deker Adelman, and Zackary and Morgan Wiese.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on what would have been her 75th birthday, Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the Community Church in Durham from 1 to 5 p.m.

Mrs. Wiese gave to numerous charities, and family would request that anyone wishing to do so make a donation to their favorite charity in her name.

Ferne E. Chadbourne

WESTBROOK, Maine - Ferne E. (Salsbury) Chadbourne, 93, of Westbrook, and formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Born March 19, 1908, in Canaan, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Leonal and Rowena (Stedman) Salsbury. She lived in Kittery most of her life, having moved there in 1942. She moved to Westbrook in 1997. Over the years, she worked at a variety of jobs. She was a telephone operator, and then a nurse's aid at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and then worked as a shoe inspector in the footwear manufacturing and repair field.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, embroidery and loved music. She enjoyed playing piano. She was active with her church, having been a long-time member of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Kittery. She was a member of the church's Altrua Club.

On Feb. 28, 1927, she married Roland Chadbourne in Skowhegen, Maine. Her husband predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Chadbourne-Looser; three sisters, Theda Johnson, Elizabeth Holt and Marilyn Reddiker; and three brothers, Bernard Salsbury, Mylon Salsbury and Afton Salsbury.

She is survived by a son, the Rev. Mervin Chadbourne of Portland, Maine; a brother, Erlon E. Salsbury of Hopkinton, N.H.; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends, who keep her in their hearts and minds forever.

CHADBOURNE - Ferne E. (Salsbury) Chadbourne, 93, of Westbrook Maine, died Oct. 30, 2001. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church on Government Street in Kittery. A public visitation will take place at the church from 1 p.m. to the time of the funeral. Burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

William J. Gourley

LARGO, Fla. - William J. Gourley, 86, died Oct. 25, 2001, at Largo Medical Center.

Born in Dedham, Mass., he had lived in Florida more than 25 years, having moved from Portsmouth.

He had been employed as a truck driver and plant manager for ESSO/Exxon in Portsmouth for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the Four Seasons Community Club. He was also a Mason.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Sullivan of Wrentham, Mass.; one son, W. Dennis Gourley and his wife, Elaine, of Hudson; two granddaughters, Cheryl Heald and Michele Chamberlain; two great-granddaughters, Jillian Heald and Mackenzie Chamberlain; and several nieces and nephews.

Greta B. Hodgdon

WELLINGTON, Fla. - Greta B. Hodgdon, of Wellington, Fla., died October 29, 2001, a victim of cancer. She was 84 years old. She was born in Jonesport, Maine, the daughter of Ernest and Edith Beal. She is survived by her husband, John F. Hodgdon, Sr., her son John F. Hodgdon, Jr. and his family (wife Jeanna and daughter Cassandra) in Wellington, Fla., and her daughter Janice Lowe and her family (husband Bob, sons Eric and Matthew, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and daughter Shelby) in Warrenton, Va. The senior Mr. Hodgdon was a selectman of New Castle, N.H. for 15 years. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of Greta B. Hodgdon would be welcome.

John F. McGrath

HAMPTON - John F. McGrath, 76, of 19 Dumas Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Fitchburg, Mass., on July 4, 1925, the son of the late Thomas P. and Mary G. (Rice) McGrath. He had resided for most of his life in Fitchburg before moving to Hampton in 1986.

He worked as a fireman boiler tender for both the Leominster Hospital in Massachusetts and for the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in their power plants.

He was a World War II veteran, having served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a communicant of Saint Theresa Church in Rye Beach.

Family members include his wife of 46 years, Ann E. (Paton) McGrath of Hampton; three sons, John F. McGrath III of Manchester, Thomas P. McGrath of Merrimack, and Justin R. McGrath of New Salem, Mass.; three daughters, Ann M. Vienneau of Hamilton, N.J., Kathleen M. Hayward of Fitchburg, Mass., and Patricia A. Trick of Avon, Conn.; eighteen grandchildren; a sister, Mary Loen of Lunenburg, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

McGRATH - John F. McGrath, 76, of 19 Dumas Ave., Hampton, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Constance W. Hankin

RYE - Constance W. "Connie" (Walsh) Hankin, 73, wife of Russell H. Hankin Jr., of 32 Dow Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Portsmouth on Aug. 6, 1928, a daughter of the late William H.J. and Sarah (Burchill) Walsh.

She was a graduate of the former Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter.

Prior to her retirement, she had been employed at the Immaculate Conception Parish as a secretary for 12 years. She had also worked at the former Flagstone's for 11 years.

She was a member of St. Theresa's Church in Rye Beach. She had volunteered for many years in the special education class at Little Harbour School. She was a parent member of the Education Council at Portsmouth High School and was one of the original members of the Community Development Commission in Portsmouth.

Besides her husband, Russell, of 55 years, survivors include her children, Gregory W. Hankin of Exeter, Cheryl Stockman of Somersworth, William R. Hankin of Eliot, Maine, Deborah J. Hankin of Epping, Sean F. Hankin of Colby, Kan., and Elizabeth Pacitti of Boca Raton, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Norma Semprini of Brentwood, Eileen Semprini of Madbury, Janette Miksch of Grass Valley, Calif., and Jackie Salvatore of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Nancy L. Hankin, predeceased her on Aug. 15, 1981.

HANKIN - Constance W. "Connie" (Walsh) Hankin, 73, of 32 Dow Lane, Rye, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Theresa's Church, Central Road, Rye. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rob Pacitti Scholarship Fund, c/o Russell Hankin Jr., 32 Dow Lane, Rye, NH 03870.

Francis W. MacLehose

DOVER - Francis William "Bill" MacLehose, 73, of Dover, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Orange, N.J., on Jan. 21, 1928, he was a son of Leonard Fleming MacLehose and Adelia Johnson MacLehose. His family lived in East Orange and South Orange, N.J., where he graduated from Columbia High School in 1946. In 1951, he graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., with a degree in mechanical engineering, after which he served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss, Texas, during the Korean conflict. He was an engineer in the sales department at Automatic Switch Company, a division of Emerson Electric Company, in Florham Park, N.J., for more than 30 years.

After living in New Providence, N.J., for almost 30 years, he retired to his adopted state of New Hampshire.

He is remembered for his avid interests, which ranged from hiking to reading Shakespeare and included listening to traditional Scottish and classical music. His greatest passion was building models of sailing ships. He volunteered to repair damaged ship models at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, Strawbery Banke Museum, the John Paul Jones House and the Kittery Museum. Two of his models of the USS Constitution are currently on display at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum and the Constitution Museum in Boston.

For many years, he was in charge of the morning program at the Scottish Heritage Festival in New Jersey. He brought the joy of Welsh music to Dover when he arranged for the Rhos Welsh Male Chorus to sing at First Parish Church in 1996. He volunteered at radio station WGBH in Boston and was a volunteer guide for both the Endeavour and the Bounty replicas when they appeared in Portsmouth Harbor. He was a member of First Parish Church in Dover and served on the Music Committee and the Concert Committee.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Mildred "Mitzie" Kocornik MacLehose of Dover; three sons, Stewart C. MacLehose and his wife, Kathleen Hayden, of Falmouth, Maine, William F. MacLehose of Philadelphia, Pa., and Douglas J. MacLehose and his wife, Suzanne, of New Canaan, Conn.; one brother, Leonard F. MacLehose and his wife, Ruth, of Granville, Ohio; one sister, Helen Bray of Denver, Colo.; one grandson, Calvin H. MacLehose of Falmouth, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

MacLEHOSE - Francis William "Bill" MacLehose, 73, of Dover, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001. Friends and relatives may call from 6 to 8 o'clock this evening at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at the First Parish Church, Congregational, 218 Central Ave., Dover, with the Rev. David L. Slater, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in his memory to the First Parish Church Building Fund, 218 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820, or to the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.
