Joseph Spencer
SANFORD, Maine - Joseph "Ray" Spencer, 80, of Spencer Hill Road, died Oct. 18, 2001, at Greenwood Center in Sanford after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Sanford on May 15, 1921, the son of Allen and Marguerite (Bisson) Spencer.
He attended Sanford schools and was a 1939 graduate of Sanford High School and a 1975 graduate of the former University of Maine at Portland-Gorham.
He was a musician all of his life. He started playing trumpet in high school, influenced by his friend and neighbor Randy Brooks. During high school, he had his own band called The Jazzalomas.
When Randy Brooks went to New York in 1945, he asked Ray to join his band as third trumpet. He played with Brooks for six months and spoke of the many wonderful experiences he had there but returned to Sanford to be with his young family.
He worked for the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills, the former American Shoe Co., and drove a taxi, but all the while he played in one band or another. Among others, he played with the Sanford Community Band, The Blue Jackets, Harry Jackson, Carl Broggi, Don Doane, Ray Harrington, Doc Provencher, Ted Hebert, Brad Spinney, Bill Palace, Bud Squire, George Hall, Cyd Lerman, Rudy Wallace and more, all over Southern Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
He taught music at Wells High School and gave private music lessons. He organized a band at the Notre Dame Institute in Alfred and taught music at Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburg, N.Y. Over the years, he learned to play all instruments, as he believed that, in fairness to his students, he should be able to play their instruments. He enjoyed playing brass the most and played saxophone in later years. This flexibility made him popular with band leaders.
In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting, trapping, boating, swimming and renovating his home. He frequently listened to his extensive music collection, especially jazz and big band, always happy to reminisce.
A son, George Spencer, died previously.
Survivors include his wife of five years, Virginia (Arbuckle) Spencer of Sanford; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Sandra) Gendron of Springvale; two stepsons; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
