Margaret W. Sawyer
CONCORD - Margaret W. Sawyer, 89, of Concord, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Havenwood Nursing Home in Concord.
She was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the daughter of John W. and Eleanor (Collins) Durgin.
Mrs. Sawyer attended the University of New Hampshire for two years. She was a secretary and receptionist for the N.H. Historical Society. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Concord, where she was a deacon and trustee, and was past president of the Women's Guild. She was also a member of the N.H. Historical Society and Concord Hospital Associates. She was active in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts and was a Campfire instructor. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Woodstock and a substitute teacher at Concord High School. She was a volunteer at Havenwood Nursing Home when it first opened. She was a loving mother.
She is survived by three sons, Lloyd V. Sawyer Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., Wendell D. Sawyer of Corona del Mar, Calif., and Mark B. Sawyer of Bow, N.H.; one daughter, Roanne Sanborn of Loudon, N.H.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert O. Durgin of Bradenton, Fla.; and one sister, Jeannette Rockwell of Sarasota, Fla.
Mrs. Sawyer's husband, Lloyd V. Sawyer, passed away on Oct. 8, 2001.
SAWYER - Margaret W. Sawyer, of Concord, died Oct. 19, 2001. She was wife of the late Lloyd V. Sawyer, who died Oct. 8, 2001. A memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer will be held at a later date, with burial to follow in Woodstock (N.H.) Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the John W. Thomas E. Scott
KITTERY - Thomas E. Scott, 64, of 19 Rudolph Ave., died Oct. 18, 2001 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
A true native, he was born on Jan. 9, 1937, in Kittery, the son of Theodore and Helen F. (Hay) Scott. He attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1955.
He served his country as a member of the Air Force, stationed in Texas for several years.
He completed the apprenticeship program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and went on to become a design technician in the Design Department of the Shipyard.
Scott was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a member of the International Federation of Professional Technical Engineers, a member of the AARP, the North East Prime Time Club, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Bowling League and the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point.
He enjoyed fishing especially with his brother and cousin who would fly into remote areas to fish.
He is survived by his sister and her husband, Nancy and Robert Young of Kittery; a brother and his wife, Richard L. and Johnnie Mae Scott of Thomasville, Ga.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
SCOTT - Thomas E. Scott, 64, of 19 Rudolph Ave., Kittery, Maine, died Oct. 18, 2001, in Portsmouth. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 22, from the First Baptist Church in Kittery Point. Friends and family may call from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point or to the Rice Public Library in Kittery. Arrangements are by the Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.
Archie A. Witham
NEWMARKET - Archie A. Witham, 87, of Exeter Road, died Oct. 18, 2001, at his home in Newmarket.
Born June 6, 1914, in Greenland, N.H., he was the son of Warren and Georgia (Barnaby) Witham. He lived in Portsmouth prior to moving to Newmarket 25 years ago.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Archie was a pipefitter and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
He was a member of St. Andrews Lodge No. 56 of Portsmouth.
For the past 29 years he and his wife went to the Burger King in Portsmouth, almost every day, to watch the children play.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Dorothy (Bennett) Witham of Newmarket; two stepchildren, Frank Hart of Stratham, and John Hart of Enfield, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two nieces. He was predeceased by a son, Wesley Hart.
WITHAM - Archie A. Witham, 87, of Exeter Road, Newmarket, died Oct. 18, 2001. A visiting hour will be held from 2-3 p.m., Sunday, followed by a 3 p.m. Funeral service at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. The Rev. J. Jermain Bodine will officiate. A private burial will take place in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5031.
John W. Toner
PORTSMOUTH - John W. Toner IV, 63, of 85 Ruby Road, passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Portsmouth, Nov. 13, 1937, the son of John W. and Mary Ellen (Flanagan) Toner, he attended St. Patrick School and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1956. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy in 1960, where he was a member of Phi Chi Alpha fraternity and ROTC.
After graduating he joined the family business, Toner Pharmacy of Portsmouth and North Hampton, where he worked for many years. He also worked as the chief pharmacy inspector for the state of New Hampshire and later as the New Hampshire state pharmacy compliance inspector. He most recently worked at the Rite Aid Pharmacy in York, Maine.
He was a member of the N.H. Society of Health System Pharmacists, Portsmouth Lodge of Elks, Portsmouth Yacht Club, Trout Unlimited and the Ruffled Grouse Society. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed sailing and boating. He had just completed restoring a wooden sailboat and was about to start his own antique boat restoration company.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen Nesi of Pelham Manor, N.Y., Patricia Hennequin of Auburn, N.H., John W. "Jay" Toner V of New Hartford, Conn., and Sean P. Toner of Plainville, Conn.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Ann Madden of Portsmouth and Mary Densch of Blanchardville, Wis.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and close friends.
TONER - John W. Toner IV, 63, of 85 Ruby Road, Portsmouth, died Oct. 18, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Summer Street, Portsmouth, Tuesday morning at 11. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Robert Y. Stiles
EXETER - Robert Y. Stiles, 88, of Riverwoods Drive, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at his home.
Born July 15, 1913, in Morrisville, Vt., he was the son of the late Wallace and Ella (Payne) Stiles.
He grew up in Brentwood, then moved to Raymond and resided there for 15 years. He then moved and was a longtime resident of Hanover before living in Exeter, where he spent the last eight years.
He was a government employee serving as a civil servant at Fort Devens in Massachusetts for several years, and then with Cold Regions Research and Engineering Labs in Hanover, where he retired after many years.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, and a member of the World War II Glider Pilots Association.
He was a member of the Major John Sullivan Masonic Lodge No. 2 of Epping, and was also a volunteer member of AARP.
He was very involved with the Democratic Party in New Hampshire.
He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Lucille (Judkins) Stiles, and two brothers, Walter and Norman.
He is survived by two daughters, Roberta Jalbert of Madison, Va., and Grace Mitchell of Sparkhill, N.Y.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday from the Brewitt Funeral Home in Epping, followed by services at the Epping Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Townsend officiating. A eulogy by longtime Hanover neighbor Robert Sokol was read, and in attendance were many residents of Riverwoods of Exeter.
Burial followed at the family lot in Prospect Cemetery in Epping, with committal prayers by the Rev. Townsend. Military honors were held by the United States Air Force. The flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to his daughter, Roberta Jalbert.
Bearers were Nathan Mitchell, Darron Jalbert, Eric Jalbert and Bryan Palumbo.
Dorothy Varrell
YORK HARBOR, Maine - Dorothy Varrell, 85, of 27 Orchard Lane, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at her residence.
She was born on May 24, 1916, in Lebanon, Maine, the daughter of Herbert and Mildred (Wentworth) Hanson. She was a resident of York for over 60 years.
Mrs. Varrell was a bookkeeper for over 30 years at the Austin Gas and Electric Co., and she had also worked for ten years at the former Porteous, Mitchell and Braun department store.
Mrs. Varrell belonged to the Maine American Mother's Association, York Senior Center, and The Order of the Eastern Star Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter and Fadette Chapter No. 166.
Mrs. Varrell was predeceased by her husband, William W. Varrell, in 1966, and by her sister, Esther Celestino of Larchmont, N.Y.
Survivors include her daughters, Sandra McCartney of York Harbor, and Candis Bridges of York; her brother, Herbert Hanson Jr. of Zephyrhills, Fla.; her sister, Geraldine Waddell of York Harbor; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
VARRELL - Dorothy H. Varrell, of 27 Orchard Lane, York Harbor, Maine, died Oct. 18, 2001, in York. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Visiting hours will be 4-8 p.m. on Monday, with Eastern Star services at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome.
Dorothy H. Watson
RYE - The funeral for Dorothy H. Watson, 94, of Rye, who died Oct. 13, 2001, was held Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. John Solie, pastor of the Rye Congregational Church, officiated. Denise Kelly was organist. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Rev. Solie. Pallbearers were Melvin Low, Adam Watson, Sean Geary, Robert Parker, James Watson and Alan Watson.
Barbara M. Willey
EXETER - Barbara M. Willey died on Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at the Monadnock Lodge of River Woods at Exeter. She was one of River Woods' pioneer residents moving from Portsmouth in August 1994.
Born in Portland, Maine, daughter of the late Glen D. Willey and Blanche Twitchell Willey of England, she was educated at schools in Maine and New Hampshire, Harvard, Boston University and the University of Tokyo. She went to Japan after World War II and taught in the Yoyogi School (mentioned in "Windows of the Crown Prince" by Elizabeth Gray Vining).
She was the recipient of two National Science Grants, one at Beloit College, the other at Purdue University. She enjoyed membership in two honorary societies for outstanding women educators, Delta Kappa Gamma and Alpha Delta Kappa. She was a charter member of ARA, the Active Retirement Association.
She taught for many years and was principal at the Farragut School in Portsmouth, particularly enjoying the fifth-grade level.
She was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, and volunteered for Seacoast Hospice in the program's infancy. She helped with the book cart at Portsmouth Hospital and was a docent at the historical Warner House. Additionally, she received the Webster scholarship for the Lost River Nature Camp.
Highlights of her extensive travels throughout North America, Japan, China and England, were meeting Helen Keller and having tea with Hirohito, Emperor of Japan.
She leaves dear friends Elizabeth Guy of Exeter, Louise Giari of Exeter and the Rev. Gordon Allen of South Berwick.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Milan, N.H.
Milan C. Miller
ELIOT, Maine - A funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, for Milan C. Miller, of Goodwin Road, who died Oct. 17, 2001, at his residence.
In attendance were family, friends and neighbors.
The service was held at the Blaisdell-Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot.
The Rev. Dr. David Avery, of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, officiated. The service concluded with a committal service offered by the Rev. Avery at the graveside. Pallbearers were Mr. Miller's son-in-law, David Beth, and grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the direction of the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.
Lily A. Papin
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Mrs. Lily Allen Papin, of St. Louis and formerly of Rye Beach, N.H., died peacefully of old age on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001.
She was born in St. Louis, Nov. 21, 1905, the daughter of the late Gerard B. and Ethel Edgar Allen. Her husband, who predeceased her, was Pierre Loisel Papin, a descendent of a prominent St. Louis family and a lineal descendent of Pierre de Laclede Liguest, who with Auguste Chouteau founded the city of Saint Louis in 1764.
Mrs. Papin graduated from Mary Institute in 1923 and was married in 1926. Her avocation and passion was interior decorating, which took her and her family in and out of numerous houses during her lifetime. During World War II, she served as a Red Cross nurse. She was also an active member of Bundles for Britain, and an avid admirer and staunch supporter of Winston Churchill.
She attained some notoriety in 1945 when she wrote a poem in praise of Churchill that was published in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Mr. Churchill was apprised of the poetic tribute and responded by returning a letter to Mrs. Papin on the House of Commons letterhead. She subsequently was invited by her aunt Elizabeth, the wife of Joseph Pulitzer, to attend Mr. Churchill's speech in Fulton, Mo., where he first coined the phrase "Iron Curtain."
Mrs. Papin is survived by her three sons, Pierre Loisel of St. Louis, Nicholas B. of Rolla, and Gerard A. of Boxford, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned sometime in the future.
Lillian Golden
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Lillian (Deitch) Golden, 84, of Middle Road, were held Sunday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with services at Temple Israel, Portsmouth. The Rabbi David Mark officiated.
In attendance were members of the temple, including representatives of Hadassah and the Sisterhood. Also in attendance were representatives from Portsmouth High School.
Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.
Bearers were Walter Winshall, Shlomo Barnoon, Jill Greenberg, Douglas Tilton, Sandy White and Marty Rahn.
Norman B. "Skip" Chase
CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Norman B. "Skip" Chase, 87, of Cape Neddick, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at York Hospital, following a valiant fight with cancer.
He was born March 27, 1914, in York Beach, the son of John "Stuart" and Ardell (Brooks) Chase, and attended York Beach schools.
He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Shop 07, retiring in 1973.
He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. He enjoyed sharing his youthful experiences, including his trip across the country in an old Model T with his mom, dad, brothers and sisters. He continued to play his harmonica following his stint with "The White Mountain Boys," a country-western group well known in the 1930s. He was also the co-owner and builder of Skippers Bay Cottages, on Bay Haven in York Beach.
He was the oldest fireman at the York Beach Fire Department, having started when he was a young boy. His father was the first fire chief at the Beach, and the family lived in the firehouse.
He was also among the founders of the York Senior Center Inc. He served on the board of directors for many years. He spent many hours of service and good times with his friends and cribbage buddies. He had a wonderful, fulfilling life with great memories and loving relationships.
He was the husband of Mary (Bisognani) Chase, of Cape Neddick, for 64 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Sheila Carney and her husband, John, of Cape Neddick; two grandchildren, Shelly Good of Cape Neddick, and Kimberly Chaney of Montoursville, Pa.; one great-granddaughter, Lauren Murtha of Cape Neddick; three brothers, Herman Chase of York Beach, Chet Chase of Cape Neddick, and Richard Chase of South Berwick; and one sister, Sylvia Hawthorne of York Beach.
CHASE - Norman B. "Skip" Chase of Cape Neddick, Maine, died Oct. 20, 2001, in York, Maine. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. today (Monday) in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Senior Center, 36 Main St., York, ME 03909; or the York Beach Fire Department, P.O. Box 70, York Beach, ME 03910.
