Blanche L. King
DAMARISCOTTA, Maine - Blanche L. King, 86, of Damariscotta, Maine, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at her home.
She was born in Needham, Mass., the daughter of David and Lillian Beastall Hamilton. She attended local schools and also graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She lived in Falmouth, Maine, for many years and was active with the Lark Society String Quartet. She lived in Damariscotta, Maine for the past two and a half years and owned a summer home in Center Chatham since 1960. Her husband, John E. King, died in September of 1999. She is survived by one son, D. Kenyon King of Center Chatham; one daughter, Joan Louise French of Colorado; one sister, Connie Hall of Exeter; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the Center Chatham Cemetery, with the Rev. George Westerberg officiating. Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg, Maine.
Marilyn (Smith) McDonald
ALBANY - Marilyn (Smith) McDonald, 59, of Cross Over Road, died suddenly August 3, 2000. She was born on January 2, 1941, the daughter of the late Raymond and Gertrude (Collie) Smith and had lived in the Conway area all of her life.
Marilyn loved animals and watching wildlife.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl Ames of Albany, June Smith of East Conway, Eric McDonald of Fryeburg, Brad MacDonald of Tamworth, Etta King of Knoxsville, Ark., Holly MacDonald of Conway and Leo Riel Jr. of Conway. She is also survived by a sister, Doris McKimm of Driftwood, Pa.
Calling hours will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the High Street Cemetery in Albany.
Iva K. Fox
NORTH LOVELL, Maine - Iva K. Fox, 82, a lifelong resident of Slab city North Lovell, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at the Bridgton Hospital.
She was the daughter of Albert and Marion McAllister Kendall and was educated in local schools. She was a member of the Lovell United Church of Christ, and a former member of the Ladies Firemen's Auxiliary of Lovell. She enjoyed knitting and donated many pairs of mittens to the hospital gift shop. She also enjoyed flowers.
Her husband, Charles H. Fox, died in 1977.
She is survived by six sons, Paul C. Fox, of Monmouth, Maine, Fred C. Fox, Lawrence L. Fox and Stephen F. Fox, all of Lovell, and Albert J. Fox and Peter K. Fox, both of Stoneham; two daughters, Linda M. Allen, of Lovell, and Rosemary Stackhouse, of Bethel; one sister, Pauline Smith, of Lovell; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was pre-deceased by a sister, Esther Harriman.
A funeral service will be held today (Monday) at 2 p.m. at the Lovell United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Ronald Ashworth and Rev. Herb Adams. Burial will be in the West Lovell Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home.
Wesley S. Gleason
SARASOTA, Fla. - Wesley S. Gleason, 76, Sarasota, Fla., died July 28, 2000.
He was born Jan. 11, 1924, in Dover and lived in Alton Bay. He moved to North Conway in his teenage years and graduated from Kennett High School. He then enlisted in the Army Air Force, was a veteran of World War II, retired in 1962 and returned to North Conway.
During his years in North Conway he was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational, the Mount Washington Valley Association, the North Conway Rotary Club, the North Conway American Legion and the Masons. He served in the Conway Police Department, the North Conway Fire Department, the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, on the Conway School Board, as a Conway police commissioner and as the North Conway Water Precinct commissioner. He was general manager at the Mount Cranmore Skimobile, then manager of Mountain Motors Co., and was later a salesman at Crest Chevrolet. In 1986 he retired to Sarasota, Fla.
Survivors include his wife Barbara Jackson Gleason.; a son, Scott of Westford, Mass.; two daughters, Sue of Nashua, and Sharon of Sarasota, Fla.; a niece, Susan LaBonte of York, Maine, two stepdaughters, Marsha Grawunde of Sarasota, Fla., and Karen Weglage of Miamisburg, Ohio; a grandson Shawn of Burlington, Vt.; and four step grandchildren.
At his request there are no memorial services planned. Memorial donations may be made to American Lung Association, 2201 Cantu Court, No 119, Sarasota, Fla. 34232.
Lewis E. Fernald
JACKSON - Lewis E. Fernald, 80, of Jackson, died July 29, 2000, at the Merriman House in North Conway following a long illness. Born in Jackson, the son of Arthur and Alice (Wentworth) Fernald, he was a lifelong resident of Jackson.
Fernald was a logger, farmer, carpenter and ski-lift operator. He had been a ski technician at the Jack Frost Shop in Jackson for many years and he worked at Black Mountain in Jackson for many winters as a lift operator. During the summer months, he mowed the fairways at the North Conway Country Club.
He was the Jackson fire chief for one year and had been a national forest fire warden for many years, during which time he fought many forest fires.
His happiest hours were while he was in the woods.
His family includes his wife Roberta (Illsley) Fernald of Jackson; a son, Arthur Fernald of Jackson; three daughters, Fedora Gatcomb of Jonesport, Maine, Rosalie Prince of Danvers, Mass., and Eleanor Speirs of Jackson; two stepdaughters, Anita Patch of Glen and Marion Morgan of Moultonborough; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Gray of Eaton.
His first wife, Eunice (Griffin) Fernald, predeceased him in 1982.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Jackson Community Church with the Rev. Sandy Kravate, pastor of the Christian Fellowship of New England in Center Conway, officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in the Jackson Village Cemetery.

Lilian Emily Wylie Emerson
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada - Lilian Emily Wylie Emerson, 92, formerly of Jackson, and widow of Dr. Ashton Emerson, died in Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 26, 2000, after a brief illness.
A family funeral was held at The Kearney Funeral Chapel in Vancouver on July 4, 2000.
A long-term resident of Jackson, Lilian was a dedicated supporter of the Jackson Community Church and of its sewing club and of Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
Born on March 10, 1908, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, Lilian was the daughter of Joseph and Helen Wylie. The Wylies emigrated to Canada in 1913, and in 1914 Lilian's father joined the Canadian Army, serving in World War I. Joseph was wounded in England in 1916 and in order to reunite the family, the Canadian government sent Helen and her children back to Newcastle where they remained for the next three years. In 1919, the Wylies returned to Canada and lived in Montreal, where Lilian met Ashton Emerson, a U.S. medical student at McGill University.
Lilian and Ashton were married in 1941 and for the next 14 years they led a migratory life in the U.S. Navy. Lilian lived in Bremerton, Wash., and then in San Francisco, Calif., during World War II, while Ashton served on the Pacific. In 1945, the Navy posted the Emersons first to Newport, R.I. and then to Washington, D.C., where Ashton served as President Truman's doctor on board the presidential yacht, The Williamsberg. In 1952, Lilian went with Ashton to live in Naples, Italy, for two years, where Ashton served as Chief of Surgery at the NATO hospital.
In 1955, Ashton retired from the Navy, and the Emersons moved to Jackson, where they lived for 40 years, until Ashton's death in 1995. Shortly thereafter, Lilian moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, to be near her large and loving family.
Lilian is survived by her sister, Mrs. Grace M. McKay, of Vancouver, British Columbia; her brother, Mr. Edward J. Wylie, of Vernon, British Columbia; by her sister-in-law, Mrs Mary Emerson Stevens, of Newfields, NH; by six Canadian and seven American nieces and nephews; and by numerous Canadian and American grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
Contributions in Lilian's memory may be made to the Jackson Community Church, or its sewing club, or to the North Conway Memorial Hospital.

Ruth A. Hill
FRYEBURG - Ruth A. Hill, 82, formerly of Chatham, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center.
She was born in Chatham, the daughter of Perley and Amy Hill Head, and graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1936. She worked for many years at the Clover Motel in North Conway and also for Saunders Brothers Mill in Fryeburg. She lived most of her life in Chatham and a few years in Greenville with her daughter. Most recently she lived in Hick Assisted Living Center in Fryeburg.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Ela of Greenville; three step daughters, Lena Dean of West Paris, Eleanor Bunker of Kearsarge and Louise Sargent of Bath; two sisters, Elizabeth Mirick of Simbury, Conn., and Marjorie Emery of North Fryeburg; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Neal.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold A. Hill; a granddaughter, Heather Ela; a step son, Albert Hill; a brother, Richard Head; and two sisters, Louise Cherry and Marion Charles.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. Green Hill Cemetery in East Conway.

Shirley J. Shibles
CONWAY - Shirley J. Shibles, 79, of Conway, died July 30, 2000, at the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in North Conway after a long illness.
Shibles was born in Richibucto, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of William and Ethel (Libby) Michaud. She lived in Portland, Maine, for over 45 years before moving to Conway in 1968.
Shibles had been a dance instructor in Portland and had been the arts and crafts coordinator at the Gibson Center for Senior Services in North Conway. She was also a member of the Elmwood Grange in Conway.
Her family includes a son, Dennis W. Shibles of Bangor, Maine; and four grandchildren, Stephen T. Shibles of Deltona, Fla., Matthew W. Shibles of Gainesville, Fla., and Mary L. Shibles and Myra L. Shibles, both of Bangor, Maine.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 4 p.m. in the Conway Village Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Swayze officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

Henry S. Tupeck
TUFTONBORO - Henry S. Tupeck, 75, of Middle Road in Tuftonboro, died July 29, 2000, at his home following a brief illness.
He was born Aug. 11, 1924, the son of the late Steven and Bernice (Ayers) Tupeck.
Tupeck was a native and life-long resident of Tuftonboro and had worked for A.J. Coleman & Son Construction Co., in Conway for 33 years. He served as a "Buck" Sergeant in the U.S. Army, 25th Quarter Master Company, in Japan during World War II.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Caroline (Nudd) Tupeck of Tuftonboro; his loving daughter, Gloria Carter, also of Tuftonboro; several grandchildren; and a brother, Russell Tupeck of Tuftonboro.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home on Route 28 in Wolfeboro. Graveside services will be Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. in the Townhouse Cemetery in Tuftonboro.
