Marino DiMambro

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. - Marino DiMambro, 81, of 12055 Foxdale Drive, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. Born on June 5, 1920, in Casino, Italy, he was a son of Luigi and Teresa (Pirollo) DiMambro. He came to the United States in 1931, living in Madbury and later in Dover.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 12, 1940, in Boston and served in the South Pacific and Central Pacific areas from April 10, 1942, to Nov. 27, 1944, attaining the rank of corporal. He participated in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, the British Solomon Islands, Cape Gloucester, New Britain and on Peleliu in the Palau Islands.

He received the American Defense SVC Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one star, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon with one bronze star, the Purple Heart Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Honorable Service Lapel Button, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Marine Corps Honorable Discharge Button.

He served on the Oakland police force and was medically released from duty due to injuries on the job.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Gonzales and her husband, Henry, of Los Alamos, N.M., and Olivia Mills and her husband, Jeff, of Wichita, Kan.; his grandchildren Desiree and Marino Gonzales of Los Alamos, N.M., and Heather and Michelle Lee of Los Angeles; one great-grandson, Bryant Gonzales; three brothers and their wives, Vincent and Hazel of Dover, N.H., Rudolph and Inez of Dover, and Robert and Florence of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Genoveffa Lambert of Dover and Mary and her husband, Salvadore Pulire, of Concord, N.H.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Agostino, on Oct. 24, 2000.

He will be laid to rest in the national cemetery in New Mexico.

Tabitha Buffington

KITTERY, Maine - Tabitha Buffington, the infant daughter of Terrence and Tracy (Hutchins) Buffington of Kittery, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her brother, Tyler of Kittery; her maternal grandparents, Ronald and Susan Hutchins of Kittery; her paternal grandparents, Terrence W. Buffington of Canton, Mo., and Susan Troutner of Bartow, Fla.; great-grandparents, Tom and Norma Buffington of Quincy, Ill., and Thomas and Lucille Troutner of Pittsfield, Ill.; one aunt, Rebecca Hutchins of Kittery; four uncles, Erin and Christopher Hutchins of Kittery, Thomas Buffington of Bartow, Fla., and Travis Buffington of Auburn, Wash.; and several cousins.

She will be missed by all, but all are comforted by the knowledge that God has a new little angel in Heaven.

BUFFINGTON - Tabitha Buffington, the infant daughter of Terrence and Tracy (Hutchins) Buffington of Kittery, Maine, died Aug. 21, 2001. A private family visitation will be held this evening and a private burial will take place at Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, on Friday morning. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Mary Agnes Chandler

KITTERY, Maine - Mary Agnes Chandler, 93, of 70 Love Lane Extension, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., Sept. 24, 1907, she was the daughter of Michael and Helen (Paterson) Chandler. She moved to Kittery, where she resided for the past 79 years.

She was a 1925 graduate of Traip Academy. She also attended Salem Commercial School in Salem, Mass., and Plymouth Business School in Portsmouth. Following her schooling she worked as a payroll manager for Public Service of New Hampshire for many years. She was a member of St. Raphael's Church and the Catholic Daughters.

She is survived by two sisters, Doris and Nicholas Cricenti of Concord, N.H., and Grace and Jud Hannigan of Kittery Point; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and Earl Chandler, and one sister, Ruth Chandler.

CHANDLER - Mary Agnes Chandler, 93, of 70 Love Lane Extension, Kittery, Maine, died Aug. 22, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Raphael's Church in Kittery on Saturday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Paul C. Tobey

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral was held for Paul C. Tobey on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, from the J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

The Rev. Graham Alvord officiated. In attendance were friends, family and members of his Foxwell family.

The service continued with a committal at Orchard Grove Cemetery, where burial took place. Several of his nephews acted as pallbearers.

Barbara M. Heal

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Barbara M. Heal, 73, of 116 Kensington Road, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Jeff Hastings, associate pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist and Gordon E. Heal, son of Mrs. Heal, offered words of remembrance.

Private interment was in the West View Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Hastings.

Gordon Picott

KITTERY, Maine - Mr. Gordon Picott, 74, of Kittery, passed away Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born Dec. 3, 1926, in Kittery, Maine, he was the son of the late Fred and Lillian (Thomas) Picott.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his many years of volunteer work at Footprints in Kittery. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army, and over the years was employed as a truck driver in the Kittery area.

He is survived by his wife, the former Marilyn B. Ballou; one daughter, Marilyn Moran of Palo Alto, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Barbara Gaines of Greenville, Miss., and Susan Bradeen of Rochester, N.H.; two stepsons, Robert Fuller of Somersworth, N.H., and David Fuller of Puyallup, Wash.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

PICOTT - Gordon Picott, 74, of Kittery, Maine, passed away Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at the York Hospital. There will be no funeral services or visitation hours. The family has requested that contributions be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Shirley R. Gardner

SPRING HILL, Fla. - Shirley R. Gardner, 59, formerly of Rochester, N.H., and Danvers, Mass., died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, after a short illness.

Born in Groton, Conn., Oct. 16, 1941, she was the daughter of Alphonse G. and Ruth (Goodwin) Buskey. She graduated from Houlton High School in Danvers, Mass.

A dedicated homemaker, her first love was her family, especially her grandson, with whom she enjoyed spending time. She also enjoyed her time spent at Apache Campground in Sanford, Maine. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Bruce D. Gardner; a daughter, Dawn Lee Harwood and her husband, David, of North Berwick, Maine; a son, Michael B. Gardner of Beverly, Mass.; a grandson, Brian David Harwood of North Berwick; a sister, Mona Berounsky and her husband, Richard, of Eliot, Maine; several nieces and a nephew; and three great-nieces.

She was predeceased by her brother, Bradley Buskey.

GARDNER - Shirley R. Gardner, 59, of Spring Hill, Fla., formerly of Rochester, N.H., and Danvers, Mass., died Aug. 23, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a short illness. A funeral will be held on Monday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine. Burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, Maine. Friends and family are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at the funeral home. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Charles H. Elderkin

SALEM - Charles H. "Charlie" Elderkin, 59, the beloved husband of Susan E. (Colvin) Elderkin of Salem for 31 years, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Seekonk, Mass., May 22, 1942, he was the son of Mabel Robles and her husband, Abraham, of East Providence, R.I., and the son of the late William Elderkin.

He resided in New Hampshire for 21 years, and was formerly of Massachusetts.

Prior to his illness, he was self-employed as a professional public horse trainer for Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs in the New England area for more than 45 years. He was known for his dedication and professionalism for training the prize horses.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Darlene S. (Brum) Gidley and her husband, Daniel J., of Hampton, and Melissa R. (Brum) Hamel and her husband, Kevin G., of Brentwood; four sisters, Constance Licciardi of East Providence, R.I., Margaret Conn of East Providence, Myrtle Gardner of East Providence, and Alice Fenwick of Morseville, Ind.; one brother, Kenneth Elderkin and his wife, Carol, of East Providence; two grandchildren, Alexis and Keegan Gidley of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers William "Billy" Elderkin and Robert "Bobby" Elderkin.

ELDERKIN - Charles H. "Charlie" Elderkin, 59, of Salem, N.H., died Aug. 23, 2001. Calling hours will take place at the Goundrey Funeral Home, 42 Main St., Salem, today (Sunday) from 4 to 8 p.m. Services will take place at the funeral home, Monday at 11 a.m., to which relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Marion F. Armsden

ELIOT, Maine - Marion F. Armsden, 69, of Old Road, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at her home.

Born on June 25, 1932, in Eliot, she was a daughter of Ralph and Dorothy (Searles) Everson. She attended local schools and graduated from Eliot High School, Class of 1950.

Before her retirement she was a medical records clerk at Portsmouth (N.H.) Regional Hospital, and also worked at General Electric in Somersworth, N.H.

A very diverse woman, she enjoyed life to its fullest. Taking part in golfing, skiing, playing bridge and spending time with friends at the Portsmouth Country Club. She enjoyed playing the organ and piano, as well as some painting. She and her husband also enjoyed square dancing with the Down East Square Dancers.

She was the wife of Roy Armsden of Eliot.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughter, Donna L. Lilly of Canyon Lake, Texas; her son, Scott E. Lilly and his wife, Sharon, of Kendalia, Texas; a sister, Jeannette and her husband, Francis Morancy, of West Newfields, Maine; and three wonderful grandchildren, Morgan Lilly, Natalia Lilly and Andres Gomez, all of Texas.

ARMSDEN - Marion F. Armsden, 69, of Old Road in Eliot, Maine, died Aug. 24, 2001, at her home. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/ U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine. A reception will follow the service at the First Congregational Church parish hall, 155 State Road, Eliot. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Barbara M. Heal

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Barbara M. Heal, 73, of 116 Kensington Road, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Gertrude Taylor

KITTERY, Maine - A largely attended memorial service for Gertrude Taylor who died Aug. 20, 2001, was held Saturday afternoon at the Kittery Point Baptist Church. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor, conducted services. Marie Munz was organist. Eulogies and fond memories were given by her many friends and family.

A special reading was given by granddaughter Connie Moulton; special music was sung by granddaughter Cindy Donnell and grandson Ross Taylor. Mrs. Taylor's daughter, Eleanor Davis, recited a special prayer.

Following the service, friends and family gathered in the church's fellowship hall for a time of refreshment and reflections. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Tabitha Buffington

KITTERY, Maine - A graveside committal service and burial for Tabitha Buffington, infant daughter of Terrence and Tracy Buffington, was held Friday morning at Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery. Tabitha's grandfather, Ronald Hutchins of Kittery, conducted the graveside services. Two of Tabitha's beloved uncles were pallbearers.

Following the service, friends and family gathered at the family home in Kittery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper funeral home of Kittery.

Jane Dion

KITTERY, Maine - A very moving and inspirational celebration of life for Jane Dion, who passed away on Aug. 17, 2001, was held Saturday afternoon at the Kittery Church of Christ. Pastor John Dillenger conducted services. Mrs. Dion was eulogized by her son, Alan, as well as words of remembrance given by a close friend.

Dennis Leavitt led the entire congregation in song and praise, as some of Mrs. Dion's favorite hymns were chosen for the memorial service. The church greeter was Elaine Dion.

Following the service, family and friends gathered at the fellowship hall, where the women of the church put on a pot-luck dinner for everyone.

Gifford Perry

AMHERST - Marcia Gifford Perry of Amherst died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, in the company of her family, at the Elliot Hospital, Manchester.

She was the beloved wife of Francis N. Perry of Amherst, and the daughter of the late Harold and Elizabeth (McGovern) Gifford. Born in Bristol, R.I., she moved to New Hampshire in 1967. Marcia graduated from the R.I. Conservatory of Music where she later became a faculty member and taught piano. She graduated from The Rhode Island College of Education, and earned her master's degree in counseling from Rivier College in Nashua. She worked as a guidance counselor at the Amherst Middle School, and taught music and academics in the Bristol and Amherst school systems for more than 35 years. She was the founder and director of the Bristol Carolers, The Amherst Singers and numerous choral groups throughout her life. She was the music chair for the Amherst Arts and Crafts Show and provided musical direction for many school and community programs. Marcia composed "Hymn to America," and directed and played the piano for its debut at the Fourth of July 2000 parade in Amherst. She was a committee member with the N.H. Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to her husband, survivors include six children, Marcia E. Perry of Naples, Fla., Marklyn P. Champagne of East Greenwich, R.I., F. Noel Perry of Woodside, Calif., Michaela Perry of York, Maine, Elizabeth Morriss of Kamuela, Hawaii, and Lisa P. Franke of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; her siblings, Catherine Tucker of Bristol, R.I., Harold Gifford and Francis Gifford of Warren, R.I., and John Gifford of Lincoln, R.I.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Elizabeth Freitas and Marie Carrier.

PERRY - Marcia Gifford Perry, resident of Amherst, died on Aug. 25, 2001, in Manchester. She was the loving wife of Francis N. Perry. Calling hours are Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm St., Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, 34 Amherst St., Milford. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bristol, R.I., on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Milford Rotary Scholarship Fund to benefit music education, c/o The Milford Rotary Club, P.O. Box 618, Milford, NH 03055. Smith & Heald Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PASSERO - Millie (Bruno) Passero, of Somerville, Mass., died Aug. 25, 2001. Beloved wife of the late Ernest F. Passero Sr.; devoted mother of Louise E. Romeo of Winchester, Mass., the Rev. Ernest F. Passero S.J., Eleanor M. McGeehan of Winchester, Mass., and Arthur M. Passero of Rye, N.H.; sister of Philip J. Bruno of Salem, N.H., and Evelyn Weidnea of Florida, and the late Mary A. (Bruno) Passero, Lucy Bruno and Daniel Bruno. Also survived by 11 loving grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powderhouse Square), Somerville, on Tuesday at 8 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. John The Evangelist Church, North Cambridge, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours today (Monday) 4-8 p.m. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, Mass.

Chester Mansfield

EAST KINGSTON - W. Chester "Chet" Mansfield, 65, of 76 Burnt Swamp Road, died Sunday afternoon at home with his family. He was the husband of Sandra J. (Young) Mansfield.

Born in Wareham, Mass., on Aug. 20, 1936, he was a son of the late John A. and Rachel T. (Wordell) Mansfield, and was a graduate of Salem (Mass.) High School.

He had worked for Kingston Steel Drum of Kingston and Newton Structural Steel of Newton, N.H.

He was an avid freshwater fisherman and woodworker.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Daniel C., and his wife, Bonnie M., of Haverhill, Mass.; two daughters, Becky J. Gemelli, and her husband, Francis A. "Buddy," of East Kingston, and Cindy J. Lesiczka, of Haverhill, Mass.; four sisters, Joan Dougherty, of Middleton, Mass., Barbara Livingston, of Raymond, N.H., Helen Carrick, of Beverly, Mass., and Louise Wilbur, of Farmington, N.H.; six brothers, Jack, of Essex, Mass., Dick, of South Thomaston, Maine, Tom, of Somersworth, N.H., Russell, of Rochester, N.H., Lenny, of Exeter, N.H., and Alfred of Pontiac, Ill.; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Bill and Madelyn French, Candy and Mike French, and Cindy and Kevin Larnard. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy A. Martino, who died in March 1994.

MANSFIELD - W. Chester "Chet" Mansfield, 65, of 76 Burnt Swamp Road, East Kingston, N.H., died on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury, Mass., followed by burial at Hillside Cemetery in East Kingston. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
