Catherine M. Chadwick
KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Catherine Mary (Quinlan) Chadwick, 85, of 3 Rice Ave., were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, N.H., on Thursday, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth. Father Edward J. Kelley, pastor, was celebrant.
The eulogy was given by his son Robert F. Chadwick. Readings were given by his son-in-law, Bruce A. Brann, and son David W. Chadwick. Gifts were offered by his daughter, Gayle E. Brann, and grandson, Garrett Brann. Acolyte was Richard Curry. Mary Leonard was soloist and Marion Arnoldy was the organist.
In attendance were communicants of the church, representatives from Family Services in Portsmouth, the Portsmouth Hospital Guild, Sprague Energy, Portsmouth Yacht Club and Portsmouth Junior Women's League.
Bearers were David W. Chadwick, Adam K. Chadwick, Benjamin S. Chadwick, Robert F. Chadwick and Bruce A. Brann.
Walter L. Durant
HAMPTON - The funeral for Walter L. Durant, 70, of 221 Drakeside Road, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist.
Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore. The U.S. flag was presented to Mr. Durant's widow, Nancy (Howe) Durant.
Pallbearers were Christopher Durant, Gregory Durant, Kevin Durant, James Durant, Jerry Brown and Richard Janvrin.
Masonic services were held Wednesday evening at the funeral home by St. James Lodge No. 102 F&AM. Services were also conducted by the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post 70 of Seabrook.
Dorothy M. Zoffoli
PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy M. Zoffoli, 73, of 62 Manor Drive, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre.
Born in Kittery Point, Maine, on April 28, 1928, she was the daughter of Smith and Persis (Greeley) Blake.
She was employed for many years at the former Pease Air Force Base in the Alert Facility.
She was an avid bingo player.
The widow of Rudolf Zoffoli, who died in 1997, she is survived by two children, Roy Zoffoli of Highland Falls, N.Y.; and Carol Scagliotti of Brentwood; four grandchildren; one brother, David Blake of York, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
ZOFFOLI - Dorothy M. Zoffoli, 73, of 62 Manor Drive, died Aug. 15, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Monday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Leonard Munroe
YORK, Maine - Leonard Munroe, 85, of 36 Ridge Road, husband of Olive H. (Bowden) Munroe, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 14., 2001, at York Hospital.
Born in Portland, Maine, on Sept. 12, 1915, he was the son of James A. and Margaret J. (Snowie) Munroe and was a graduate of Portland High School in Portland. He spent his boyhood at Nason's Corner in Portland.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a nuclear electrical inspector and retired in 1970.
He attended the First Parish Church in York. He was a member of the American Legion Post #56 in York and was a 50-year member of the Triangle Masonic Lodge #1 in Portland. He was a Meals on Wheels volunteer for the First Parish Church.
Besides his wife of 62 years, survivors include his son, Peter L. Munroe and his wife, Debra, of Farmington, N.H.; step-grandson Kevin Cassell of Venezuela; his daughter, Judith J. McIntire and her husband, Wayne, of York; three grandchildren, Stephanie J. (Fuller) Collier and her husband, Walter, of Anthem, Ariz., Lisa J. (Fuller) Patterson and her husband, Eric, of York, and Jonathan S. McIntire of York; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
MUNROE - Leonard Munroe, of Ridge Road, York, Maine, died Aug. 14, 2001, at York Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland. Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Masonic services will be conducted at 6 p.m. and American Legion services at 7 p.m. Family flowers only. Gail E. Hamilton
PORTSMOUTH - Gail Elizabeth (Clark) Hamilton, 49, of Portsmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001.
Born at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Albert P. Clark of Middleburg, Va. and Betty A. (Gallant) Barr, and the stepdaughter of Ralph T. Barr of Portsmouth.
She was a flight attendant at United Airlines for 28 years. She was an avid outdoor enthusiast. Some of her many hobbies included trekking through Nepal, Colorado, New Zealand, and Africa, traveling throughout the world, scuba diving, skiing, bicycling, and her recent interest in kayaking.
She grew up on Haven Road and graduated from Portsmouth High School with the class of 1970. She was on the PHS track team, field hockey team, ski team, swim team, and the captain of the girls basketball team.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her son, Justin Lee Crawford of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Steve Clark and his wife, Kathy, of Metairie, La., and Peter Anania and his wife, Kathy, of Portsmouth; a niece, Brittany Anania; and a nephew, Peter Anania.
HAMILTON - Gail Elizabeth (Clark) Hamilton, 49, of Portsmouth, died Aug. 12, 2001. A memorial service will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A reception will follow.
Beatrice M. Harmon
NEWMARKET - Beatrice M. Harmon, 76, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Haverhill, Mass.
Born March 9, 1925, in Boston, she was the daughter of Peter and Hazel (Murdough) McKay. She had lived in Exeter for 23 years before moving to Newmarket in 1985.
She was a graduate of Belmont High School in Belmont, Mass., and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School of New York City, class of 1945.
For many years she was a legal secretary for Tetler & Holmes in Hampton. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was the recipient of the Grand Cross of Color from the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and was a member of the Advisory Board for the Exeter Chapter of Rainbow for Girls.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, William P. Harmon of Newmarket; one son, Richard Harmon and his wife, Dee, of Nottingham; three daughters, Meridith Jordan of Biddeford, Maine, Judith Blaisdell and her husband, Stephen, of Exeter, and Beth Benham and her husband, John, of Nottingham; nine beloved grandchildren, Sarah and Joshua Jordan, Cara, Ben and Susie Blaisdell, Joseph and Rachel Harmon, Matthew and Jillian Benham; and her foster brother, Donald Sandberg of Falmouth, Maine.
HARMON - Beatrice M. Harmon, 76, of Newmarket, died Aug. 16, 2001. A visiting hour will be held 1-2 p.m. Monday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, followed by a 2 p.m. funeral service at the funeral home. For directions or to sign a guest book visit www.legacy.com.
Ethel T. Houser
CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Ethel T. Houser, 83, formerly of Rensselaer, N.Y., died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.
Born July 12, 1918, in Castleton, Vt., she was the daughter of Charles and Esther Toth and was a graduate of Castleton High School. She received her degree in teaching from Castleton State Teachers College and received a master's in education from the State University of New York at Albany.
During World War II, she had worked in the Springfield, Mass., Armory assembling M-1 rifles for the military.
She was a teacher at the Rensselaer, N.Y., Elementary School and had been assistant principal of the Rensselaer Junior High School and principal of Rensselaer High School.
She resided in Rensselaer most of her life, moving to Cape Neddick in 1988.
She was formerly active in the Cub Scouts, Little League and the Parent-Teachers Association. She enjoyed knitting.
She was predeceased by her husband, John A. Houser, who died in 1988.
Survivors include two sons, John A. Houser III of Kings Mills, Ohio and Charles T. Houser of Cape Neddick; two sisters, Eleanor "Toots" Anderson of Castleton, Vt. and Elizabeth "Bersh" Hammond of Chester Depot, Vt.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
HOUSER - Ethel T. Houser, 83, of Cape Neddick, Maine, died Aug. 16, 2001. Visiting hours will be 1-3 p.m. Monday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Private interment will be in Albany, N.Y.
Audrey J. Stomierosky
RYE - Audrey J. Stomierosky, 58, of Dover, formerly of Rye, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.
Born in Olean, N.Y., Sept. 25, 1942, she was the daughter of Edward J. and Mary (Shearer) Hall. She had resided in Rye for 20 years before moving to Dover three weeks ago and had previously lived in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Toms River, N.J.
She had worked 13 years for Seacoast Newspapers as the features editor for the Hampton Union, Exeter News-Letter, and the Portsmouth Herald, retiring in 1999.
She was a 1960 graduate of Allegany Central High School and a 1966 graduate of Saint Bonaventure University in New York. She was a communicant of Saint Theresa Church and a member of the church choir, a member of the Abenaqui Country Club of Rye Beach, and a member of the Portsmouth Women's Chorus and its board of directors.
Family members include her husband of 38 years, Robert F. Stomierosky of Dover; one son, Daniel Stomierosky of Chiang Mai, Thailand; one daughter, Lynn Tripp of Swansea, Mass.; two brothers, David Hall and Ted Hall, both of Allegany; two sisters, Diane Moss of Sparks, Nev.; and Phyllis Rice of Hinsdale, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah Stomierosky, in 1990.
STOMIEROSKY - Audrey J. Stomierosky, 58, of Dover, died Aug. 16, 2001. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Saint Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Allegany Cemetery, Allegany, N.Y., at the convenience of the family. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Rita B. Keith
ROCHESTER - Rita B. Keith, 84, of 76 Winter St., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a sudden illness.
She was born on July 1, 1917, in Rochester, the daughter of Emilio and Ida (Morin) Beaulieu, and was a lifelong resident of Rochester as well as a lifelong summer resident of York Beach, Maine. She was the widow of H. Merritt Keith, who died in 1995, and also was predeceased by a son, Wayne Keith, who died in May 2001.
She was an avid ballroom dancer, frequenting the Rockingham Ballroom, and loved big band music. She was a member of the Senior Friends and the AARP.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Clark of York, Maine; one son, Vaughn Keith of Rochester; two sisters, Angele Southworth of York, and Stella Cole of East Rochester; two brothers, Julien Beaulieu of Gonic, N.H., and Russell Beaulieu of York Beach; three grandchildren, Sheila Lessard of Auburn, N.H., Tanya Clark of Orlando, Fla., and Thomas Keith of Kittery, Maine; two great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Cydney Lessard, both of Auburn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
KEITH - Rita B. Keith, of Winter Street, Rochester, died Aug. 18, 2001. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the H. J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Leo's Church in Gonic, N.H., followed with burial in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Rochester.
William G. Johnson
SALEM, Maine - William G. Johnson, 84, of Salem, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at his home following a long illness.
Born May 25, 1917, in Manchester, N.H., he was the son of Fred W. and Ruth (Benson) Johnson. He was a graduate of Skowhegan High School, Class of 1935, and Norwich University in Vermont in 1939. He married Anna Daub in 1941 in Fairfield. She died Oct. 7, 1993.
He served as a lieutenant in the Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, being stationed in Holland, Belgium and Germany. He received the Bronze Star and the Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster.
He worked with Connecticut General Life Insurance as an underwriter for 25 years. He made his home in Rye, N.H., for more than 20 years, moving to Carrabassett in 1978, then for six years made his home with his daughter, Cathy, where for the past two years he was under the care of Marcy and Angela Pinkham, caregivers.
Survivors include two sons, Fred W. Johnson of Center Conway, N.H., and Sam L. Johnson of South Berwick; three daughters, Rebecca Ann Brown of Kingfield, Cathy Haines of Salem and Jennifer G. Brulotte of Barrington, N.H.; a brother, Peter Johnson of Farmington, N.H.; a sister, Phyllis Kuligowski of Farmington, N.H.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by one brother, Robert G. Johnson, and a sister, Barbara Walker.
JOHNSON - William G. Johnson, of Salem, Maine, died Aug. 17, 2001. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation hours. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Mount Abram Cemetery in Salem. Arrangements under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Main Street, Phillips, Maine. Jane Dion
KITTERY, Maine - Mrs. Jane (Russell) Dion, 58, of Kittery, died Friday morning, Aug. 17, 2001, at the York Hospital.
She was born Oct. 25, 1942, in Everett, Mass., the daughter of the late Cecil and Marjorie (Snook) Russell. She attended local schools and then college, obtaining an associate's degree in business, secretarial studies.
Over the years, she held various office staff and secretarial positions in the business and banking sectors. She was a very giving person who enjoyed helping others, especially through her volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and taking part in various activities at her church.
For the past year, she worked as an office secretary and intake counselor at the York County Community Action Services in Kittery. According to family members, she loved her work there and looked forward every day to working with staff and clients.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed ceramics, embroidering and sewing. But most of all she was an avid reader of books, magazines and papers. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
She was an "at home mom" who enjoyed keeping her home clean, cooking meals for her family and being a devoted mother, wife and homemaker.
She was an active member of the Kittery Church of Christ. Church and religion were very important to her, always a priority in her life.
In December 1964, she married Robert W. Dion and lived in Kittery.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Allan Dion and his wife, Christine, of Manchester, N.H., and Joe Dion and his wife, Sherry, of Kittery; a stepdaughter, Debbie Lumberg of Biddeford; a stepson, Kenneth Dion of Florida. She will be greatly missed by her beloved five grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren. Her generosity and caring heart will be missed by those whose lives she touched.
DION - Jane (Russell) Dion, 58, of Kittery, Maine, died Friday morning, Aug. 17, 2001, at York Hospital. There will be no funeral services or visitation hours. A memorial service will take place at 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Kittery Church of Christ. The Rev. John Dillenger will conduct services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.
Janis L. Winters
PORTSMOUTH - Janis L. (Holmes) Winters, of Portsmouth, where she had lived for 13 years, died Aug. 16, 2001, at her home.
Born in Walpole, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Winslow and Luthera (McDowell) Holmes. A graduate of Walpole High School, she later went on to graduate from the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, in Boston.
Formerly of Medfield, Mass., she retired in 1990 from Medfield State Hospital, where she had been a nursing supervisor on the night shift for many years.
She was the mother of Nancy Millian of Kennebunkport, Maine, Susan Simoneau of Millis, Mass., Robert Winters of Stratham and the late Elizabeth H. Winters; sister of the late John Holmes; loving grandmother of Bryan, Christopher, Matt, Amy, Danielle, Bobby, Juliann Janis, and Jennifer; and companion to her loving cat, Missy.
WINTERS - Janis L. (Holmes) Winters, of Portsmouth, died Aug. 16, 2001. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Home, 90 Curve St., Millis, Mass., with the Rev. Leila Holden officiating.
