Rose Steinberg
PORTSMOUTH - Rose Steinberg, 87, formerly of the Bronx, N.Y., died peacefully at the Mark H. Wentworth Home on Monday, May 21, 2001.
She was a retired legal secretary and volunteered her time to benefit the children of the Richie McFarland Children's Center in Stratham.
She was the wife of the late Joseph Steinberg. She is survived by her son Howard and daughter-in-law Janice of Rochester; her son Robert of Stuart, Fla.; her grandson Lyle of Milwaukee, Wis.; and her grandson Matthew of Boston, Mass.
STEINBERG - Rose Steinberg, 87, of Portsmouth, formerly of the Bronx, N.Y., died May 21, 2001. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours. Irene Rawson
STRATHAM - Irene Rawson, 71, of College Road, died May 21, 2001, at her home.
Born July 14, 1929, in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of Clarence and Mary (Martell) Davey. She had lived in Stratham for 54 years.
She enjoyed gardening and operating a vegetable stand at her home. On weekends she would go to flea markets and auctions, hunting for antiques. She also liked poetry and playing cards.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Verne E. Rawson Jr. of Stratham; six children, Verne E. Rawson III, Stephen D. Rawson, Verna J. Ball and Rhonda L. Phanthachack, all of Stratham; Perley D. Rawson of Exeter and JoAnn Martin of Kittery Point, Maine; 15 grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Hoyt of Newfields; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.
RAWSON - Irene Rawson, 71, of Stratham, died May 21, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, during the visitation, with the Rev. J. Jermain Bodine officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stratham Volunteer Ambulance or Rockingham VNA and Hospice.
George W. Ryan
PORTSMOUTH - George W. Ryan, 79, of 4 Arthur Road, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in New York City on March 21, 1922, he was the son of George and Marguerite (Jackson) Ryan. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1940, and the Wentworth Institute of Technology.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He was employed as a carpenter, electrician and stagehand in the theater and for television. He was a 50-year member of the International Alliance of Theater Stage Employees Local #1. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AARP. He was a former member of the Portsmouth Country Club.
His wife, Vema (Mace) Ryan, died in 1983. Survivors include two daughters, Constance Betz, of Peterborough and Whitefield, and Carole Loughlin, of Kittery, Maine; one son, Dennis Ryan, of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one aunt, Barbara Thompson, of Portsmouth.

SULLIVAN - Alta M. Sullivan, 88, formerly of South Street, Portsmouth, widow of Daniel J. Sullivan, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, in Maryville, Tenn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Local arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.
Richard Abrahams Sr.
PORTSMOUTH - Richard Abrahams Sr., 68, of 40 Bedford Way, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was the husband of Elsie (Souther) Abrahams.
Born in Newburyport, Mass., July 10, 1932, he was the son of the late Harold and Effie (Eaton) Abrahams. He had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past six years, previously residing in Seabrook.
He was a self-employed carpenter, and a veteran of the Korean War. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, driving and cruising around, and bringing gifts to people from the Second Hand Shop.
Besides his wife, he is survived by eight children, Elsie Abrahams of Lexington, Ky., Denise Abrahams of Salisbury, Mass., Richard Abrahams Jr. of Portsmouth, Bert Abrahams of Kittery, Maine, Bonnie Randall of Seabrook, Lana Bowman of Seabrook, Robin Abrahams of Seabrook, and Mark Abrahams of Haverhill, Mass.; two brothers, Robert and Bert Abrahams, both of Seabrook; two sisters, Deltina Goff and Madeline Randall, both of Seabrook; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Brett "Pip" Abrahams.
His funeral will be held today (Wednesday) at noon, at the Rand Memorial Church, South Main St., Seabrook. Burial will be in the Wildwood Cemetery in Seabrook.

George A. Gelinas
PORTSMOUTH - George A. Gelinas, 82, of 5 Adams Ave., passed away Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a long illness.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., Feb. 12, 1919, he was the son of Wilfrid and Marie (Robillard) Gelinas.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of captain, and serving in the Pacific.
He was employed for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a computer programmer, retiring June 30, 1973. He was an avid golfer, and a longtime member and past president of the Portsmouth Country Club.
He was a communicant of St. James Church.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lea (Brodeur) Gelinas; one son, Gerald Gelinas of Stratham; one daughter, Joan Hinterhaeuser of Exeter; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Gelinas and Heidi Hinterhaeuser; one sister, Alice Daggett of Seekonk, Mass.; and a nephew.
GELINAS - George A. Gelinas, 82, of 5 Adams Ave., Portsmouth, died May 20, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road, Friday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Harold G. Crossman Jr., 79, of 52 Sherburne Road, Portsmouth, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, Tuesday. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Poems were given by Judith Prince and Robert Buffum. Vocalist was April Hopey.
In attendance were members of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. An honor guard was formed by a detachment from the 10th Mountain Division Fort Drum, N.Y., under the direction of NCOIC, Staff Sgt. Earl Couture including Sgt. Arthur Prince, Spc. Toby Hood, Spc. Maranda Gurule, Spc. Eric Huck, Pfc. Andrae Sanchez, Pfc. Shane Gray, Pvt Michael Arviso.

Doris S. Golter
KITTERY, Maine - Miss Doris S. Golter, 96, of 33 Oak Terrace, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Alternative in Kittery.
Born April 21, 1905, in London, England, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Cecilia (Sutton) Golter.
She was employed for 65 years for the former Brown's Jewelry Store of Portsmouth, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.
Survivors include two sisters, Genevieve Dow of North Hampton, N.H., and Cecilia "Nell" Edwards of Eliot; and several nieces and nephews, including nephew Kenneth J. Edwards of Shapleigh.
GOLTER - Miss Doris S. Golter, 96, of 33 Oak Terrace, Kittery, Maine, died May 9, 2001. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. The family request flowers be omitted. Eva C. Hahn
ROLLINSFORD - Eva C. Hahn, 97, formerly of South Street, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.
Born in Rollinsford on Feb. 29, 1904, she was the daughter of Mark and Exilda (Martel) Theoret and lived in this area all of her lifetime.
She was a beautician, having worked in Durham and Rollinsford.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Rollinsford and a member of St. Ann's Guild.
She was the widow of Albert J. Hahn, former Rollinsford police chief, who died in 1961.
She is survived by a son, Richard L. Hahn; two granddaughters; and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Elaine Ricker; two sisters, Sister Mary Paschal, Sisters of St. Joseph, and Julia Vermette; and a brother, Frank Theoret.
HAHN - Eva C. Hahn, 97, formerly of South Street, Rollinsford, N.H., died May 21, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Church Street, Rollinsford, with Father Thomas Coover, pastor, as celebrant, officiating. Burial will follow in New Town Cemetery. Friends may call for one hour prior to the Mass at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine.
Harry Portman
HOUSTON, Texas - Harry Portman, affectionately known as "Red," died on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, after a courageous two-year struggle with melanoma, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 80. Born in Boston, Mass., on March 24, 1921, he was the son of Abraham and Molly Aronson Portman. Educated at Boston Latin High School, he served as a warrant officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, where he trained fighter pilots.
He married Sylvia Applebaum in 1943, and they had 56 happy years together. She preceded him in death two years ago. He was the proprietor of the Islington Street Market for 40 years. He was known by his customers for his quick wit, knowledge of Portsmouth and compassion with a credit line.
He was an active and devoted member of the Temple Israel congregation for many years.
He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (PHS '64), a realtor in Worcester, Mass., and her husband, Richard, a lawyer; his son, Ronald (PHS '68), a professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School, and his wife, Joan Welch Portman (PHS '68), an interior designer in Houston; and five wonderful grandchildren, Adam Silver, a product manager at Cryolife in Atlanta, Andrew Silver, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Atlanta, Wendi Portman, a cantorial student at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Shayna Portman, a registered massage therapist, and Solomon "Zack" Portman, a high school student.
PORTMAN - Harry Portman, affectionately known as "Red," died on May 22, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth, with Rabbi David Mark officiating. Donations in his honor may be made to Temple Israel. Marjorie Leathe
NORTH HAMPTON - Marjorie Leathe, 57, of 203 Lafayette Road, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001.
Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Norman Leathe; two daughters, Heidi Akerman, of Rochester, and Wendy and her husband, Keith Johnson, of Exeter; one son, William Nerling, of Biloxi, Miss.; her brother and his wife, Richard and Dee Drozlek of Burnt Hills, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. She was a friend to all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
LEATHE - Marjorie Leathe, 57, of North Hampton, died May 23, 2001. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Cremation Society of N.H., 243 Hanover St., Manchester.
Kelly C. Tobin
PORTSMOUTH - Kelly C. (Gubellini) Tobin, 53, formerly of Portsmouth and Buffalo, N.Y., died Monday, May 21, 2001, after a courageous battle with MS and cancer.
Born Oct. 4, 1947, in Riverside, Calif., she was the daughter of Alice (Dexter) Hurney and the late John C. Gubellini. She was a 1965 graduate of Portsmouth High School. She married and made her home in Buffalo, N.Y.
She earned a nursing degree in 1992 and worked as a nurse at the VA Hospital in Buffalo, until she became ill. She was also a Red Cross volunteer, a rape crisis advocate and was very active in local politics in Buffalo.
She is survived by her children, Shannon K. (Tobin) Lutman of Buffalo, Sean W. Tobin of Buffalo, and Ryan M. Tobin of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Bonnie J. Toy of Dover, Gilda A. Martineau of Dover, and Marie C. Pratt of Rochester; one brother, John M. Gubellini of Barrington; as well as several beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
TOBIN - Kelly C. (Gubellini) Tobin, 53, formerly of Portsmouth and Buffalo, N.Y., died May 21, 2001. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday morning at 10, at St. Joseph's Church, 150 Central Ave., Dover. Friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, the MS Society or the Rochester VNA and Hospice. Arrangements under the direction of Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover.
Peter L. Chaggaris
HAMPTON - Peter L. Chaggaris, 67, of Hampton, the owner and operator of Spartan Security Systems of Boston, Mass., for 38 years, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001.
He was the son of the late Louis and Stella (Angelakis) Chaggaris. He was a native of Lynn, Mass., and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1952 and Northeastern University in 1957 with a degree in engineering.
He served as a captain in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Korea and Japan, and was awarded a commendation ribbon.
Prior to starting his own business in 1963, he was employed by RCA in Needham, Mass., and was operations manager for Gamewell Manufacturing in Newton, Mass.
An avid collector of vintage cars and treasures, his hobbies included music, films, electronics and shopping.
He leaves his wife of 41 years, Cynthia (Collins) Chaggaris of Hampton; his sister, Betty C. Eliopoulos of Swampscott, Mass.; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Collins and Patricia Cloon, both of Hampton, and Ellen Roughsedge of Wolfeboro; several beloved nephews; three grandnieces; and one grandnephew.
CHAGGARIS - Peter L. Chaggaris, 67, of Hampton, died May 23, 2001. Services will be held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
