Esther Elwell

PORTSMOUTH - Longtime Portsmouth resident Esther Elwell died at her home on Wednesday, May 16, 2001, following a long illness.

She was born Esther Carlson to Anna Amanda Lewin and Andrew Carlson, Swedish immigrants, in Great Falls, Mont., July 16, 1908. Her father worked at the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. there.

She was married in 1930 to Eugene Donald Elwell and with him settled in Minneapolis, Minn., later relocating to Colorado Springs, Colo. As a homemaker in Colorado Springs, she worked at the George Nix art gallery, golfed regularly at the Broadmoor Hotel, and traveled extensively throughout the West by car.

In 1969, following her husband's retirement the couple moved to Portsmouth and renovated a brick row house on historic Sheafe Street. She volunteered at Strawbery Banke and was for many years the treasurer of the Economy Shop at St. John's Church.

A dedicated citizen of Portsmouth, she dispensed with owning a car upon her husband's death in 1981, attending to most of her errands on foot: to Richardson's for provisions and laundry, to Newberry's for sundries, and some 10 blocks to The Hill for weekly grocery shopping at A&P.

NORTH EPPING - Joseph Cilley Burley of North Epping, N.H., and Delray Beach, Fla., died Saturday, May 12, 2001, in Boynton, Fla. He died four days shy of his 96th birthday.

He designed elevator cable for the world's tallest buildings, and during a 56-year tenure at Boston Insulated Wire & Cable Co held positions as chief engineer, CEO, and chairman of the board of directors.

His innovative cables advanced the progress of technology during the last century in a myriad of industries. He developed television cables used by RCA at the World's Fair in 1939. Riding the boom of skyscrapers were his multi-conductor elevator cables utilized by Otis Elevators in the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower in Chicago and many others. Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles, Buicks and Pontiacs used his connecting wires, which were able to withstand engine vibration. His skills also enabled him to design minuscule wire used in brain surgery. Once again for a World's Fair event, he designed the electrical and elevator cables used in the Seattle Space Needle, which opened in 1962.

A native of Brookline, Mass., he was born May 16, 1905, the eldest son of the late Harry B. and Adelaide Louise (Wells) Burley and a descendant of Gen. Joseph Cilley who distinguished himself at the battle of Ticonderoga and after whom he was named. Mr. Burley attended the Runkle School in Brookline where he met his first wife, Ruth Thomas, in the sixth grade. In 1923, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, where he was the Radio Club operator for three years. He had been president of his class since 1973 and secretary since 1994.

He was a 1927 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in business administration/electrical and mechanical engineering, where he also wrote a postgraduate thesis on dielectric properties of pure gum rubber. He had been class vice president since 1977 and class secretary since 1980, as well as a member of Alumni Council for 25 years. He was a member of ATO.

With his wife Ruth, he resided in Milton, Mass., for 54 years. He was one of the founders, on the board of directors, and the comptroller for Milton Residences for the Elderly, a nonprofit organization that built two large housing complexes for senior citizens. A lifelong Unitarian, he was chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for the First Parish Church in Milton for many years.

His family was among the early settlers of Ipswich and Newburyport, Mass., in the 1640s and later moved to Epping. There the Burley family farm and homestead (built in 1752) is designated an American Bicentennial Farm.

Mr. Burley received the John Hoar award from the Rockingham Woodland Owners Association for his stewardship of the family Tree Farm. When living in Epping he was a member and secretary of the Epping Budget Committee.

An avid sailor, his greatest joy was his Morgan sloop, the "Flying Gull," in which he sailed the coast of Maine. At the age of 94, he took a monthlong cruise with his family from Boothbay to Nantucket and was still sailing at age 95. He was a member of the Boston Yacht Club since 1943 and is the member with the second-longest number of years of membership. He was a fleet captain and chairman of the Cruise Committee for many years. On or off the boat, he kept a daily log in which he recorded the weather and his weight. He enjoyed swimming and tennis into his 90s.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Robert M. Burley of Concord, Mass., and Harry B. Burley Jr. of Marion, Mass.; and his wife of 58 years, Ruth, with whom he has three surviving daughters, Sally B. Beck of Redlands, Calif., Nancy B. Chase of Epping, and Jane W. Burley of Epping.
