Mr. Lester C. Kellenbeck

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Lester C. Kellenbeck, 71, of 5 Lafayette Terrace, North Hampton, were held Thursday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, with services held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Timothy T. Rich was celebrant. The Homily was given by the Rev. Ann W. Stevenson. Pianist was Sue Crosby.

In attendance were members of the church and representatives from St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM, Portsmouth Shrine Club, and Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, by the Rev. Stevenson.

Bearers were Deven McIver, Neil McIver, Colin McIver and Chris Moulding.

Order of Eastern Star services were held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, including Frances F. Flanders Lange, PM, WM; Mary Ann Flanders, PM, secretary; Edith L. Lovering, PM, Adah; Elizabeth E. Eckhart, Ruth; Roxy Hartman, PM, Electa; Martha Petruzzi, PM, Esther; Margaret Gray, Martha; Ken Petruzzi, chaplain, PP; Jack Hartman, PP; Craig Brown, PP; Cathy Brown, PM; Frances Kendall, PM; Leroy Hamilton, PP; Ruth Hamilton, PGM; Barbara Pierce; Anne Goodwin; and Raleigh and Elaine Martin.

Also assisting in services were Bud Krause, PP; and Eleanor Krause, PM, Orient Chapter; and Beverly Eastman, PM, Tide Mill Chapter.

Masonic services were held at the funeral home Wednesday evening by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, including Donald L. Stevens, Wor. Master; Canio Petruzzi, senior warden, PM; Verne Anderson, junior warden; Jack Hartman, chaplain, PM; Glen Reid Gordon, secretary, PM; Wesley Rowe, PM; Edgar Anderson, PM; Wallace Nelson; Frank Patterson; Robert H. Leonard; Calvin Wilder, PM; Fred G. Ward Jr.; Ralph Woodman; Joseph W.P. Frost, PM; Rodney Robinson, PM; Raleigh Martin; and Martin Curtis, PM.

Also assisting in services were Carl Brown, PM, Morrison Lodge No. 90, Northwood; Steven Peterson, PM, Converse Lodge, Malden, Mass.; and Tom Thompson, Benevolent Lodge No. 7.

Margaret P. Smith

ELIOT, Maine - Margaret P. Smith, 87, of Maple Avenue, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at her home in Eliot.

Born on June 12, 1913, in Vinalhaven, Maine, she was a daughter of Ansel and Nellie (Raymond) Philbrook and attended local schools.

She was married for a short time to William Kossuth before his death at an early age. Mrs. Smith met her husband Bernard C. Smith when they were both working in York Harbor.

She enjoyed different needlework including embroidery, quilting and the like. She was known as the keeper of the neighborhood, observing the coming and going of neighbors and close relatives.

She was a well-known consultant on several books about Maine and island life, most recently being flown by small plane and taken by boat to Vinalhaven to retell life as it was to the author of "The Town That Disappeared." Much of what she remembered and related was written directly into the work of writing.

Mostly she will be remembered as a kind-hearted person who loved those near to her.

She is survived by a stepson, Bernard C. Smith Jr., of Fort Myers, Fla.; stepdaughters, Connie Clark of Dover, N.H., Nancy Savage of Springfield, Mo., and Katherine Winkler of Carlsbad, Calif.; a brother, Lyford Philbrook of Kittery Point; a sister, Annie Fernald of Wells; several stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

SMITH - Margaret P. Smith, 87, of Maple Avenue, Eliot, Maine, died May 3, 2001, at her home. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at 2 p.m., from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, ME 09304. Friends and family may call from 12 to 2 p.m. the day of the funeral at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to the arthritis charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Aura (Clark) Widen

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Aura (Clark) Widen, 77, of 150 Mill Lane, Rye, were held Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. Fred Cheney, associate pastor of Bethany Congregational Church of Greenland, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by grandson Scott Helsey. Soloist was Alma Locke.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Cheney. Bearers were Scott Helsey, John Helsey, Andrew Widen, Greg Vail, Doug Placensia, and Alex Thurston.

Mrs. Eleanor P. (Isaacson) Callanan

YORK, Maine - Mrs. Eleanor P. (Isaacson) Callanan, 84, the wife of Dana A. Callanan, of 90 Riverwood Drive, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born in Dover, N.H., on Jan. 26, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Hazel P. (Brooks) Isaacson.

She was a graduate of New England Deaconess Hospital and Simms College.

She retired as nursing administrator of the Blakey Nursing Home in Derry, N.H. She had also been a state inspection nurse for the state of New Hampshire.

She owned and operated Red Fox Antiques at Bell Farm Antiques in York. She was an avid collector of Old Ivory China and had written articles relevant to it.

She was a member of the Society For Old Ivory China and Ohme Porcelains. She was also a member of Piscataqua Chapter No. 90, Order of Eastern Star of Kittery.

Besides her husband, survivors include three sons, Robert Wilder of Townsend, Mass., Richard Wilder of Derry, N.H., and Gary Wilder of Vernon, Vt.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CALLANAN - Mrs. Eleanor P. (Isaacson) Callanan, 84, of 90 Riverwood Drive, York, Maine, passed away on May 3, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the chapel on Monday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Eugene Richardson Leland

PORTSMOUTH - Eugene Richardson Leland, 87, of 188 Jones Ave., formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Portsmouth.

He was born in Bar Harbor, Maine, on April 22, 1913, to Eugene R. Sr., and Josephine (King) Leland.

"Gene" was a graduate of Bar Harbor High School where he later taught manual arts. During World War II he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the shipfitter and sheetmetal shops. Following the war, he worked in the Portsmouth area as a carpenter with Maxam Construction and E.L. Paterson and Sons until his retirement in 1975.

For more than 50 years he was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

He enjoyed riding ATVs, boating and woodworking. He was an accomplished craftsman and was constantly working on projects ranging from bird houses to boats in his home workshop. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always willing to lend a hand when needed.

He loved the outdoors and did volunteer work for several years maintaining and improving a natural area in Kittery known as Rogers Park. In 1995, he was featured on the front page of the Portsmouth Herald in an article about the park. In March of 2000, the Kittery Town Council accepted the recommendation of the Kittery Conservation Commission to name the main trail in the park the "Leland" trail in recognition of the many hours he devoted to providing a clean, enjoyable environment for recreation.

He was the husband of Mildred (Thompson) Leland, to whom he was married for more than 64 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Richard Leland and E. Roger Leland, both of South Berwick, Maine, James S. Leland of Fort Worth, Texas, and Everett B. Leland of Kittery; a sister, Dorothy L. Doyle of Bar Harbor; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Blanche L. Matthews, Barbara L. Hamor and Laura M. Leland.

LELAND - Eugene R. Leland, 87, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, formerly of Kittery, Maine, died May 4, 2001, in Portsmouth. Services will be private. Donations may be made in his memory to the "Rogers Park Fund," c/o Everett Leland, 14 Water St., Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Annie Adams

KITTERY, Maine - A graveside committal service and burial for Annie Adams, who died Dec. 30, 2000, were held Friday in First Parish Cemetery, York. The Rev. Duane Kellogg, pastor of First Christian Church of Kittery Point, conducted the services. Friends and family members shared fond memories of her life. Funeral services were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery.

Charles H. Cass

MASHPEE, Mass. - Charles H. Cass, 80, of 19 Pinehill Blvd., formerly of Hilton Head and Bluffton, S.C., and East Hartford, Conn., died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Saint Ann's Home in Dover, N.H.

He was the beloved husband of Henrietta (Spring) Cass, with whom he recently celebrated 54 years of marriage. Born in Waterbury, Conn., he was the son of the late Charles J. and Gertrude (Mulchrone) Cass.

In 1943 he graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering, played both varsity track and football and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He also served as president of the student senate in his senior year.

Upon graduation from college, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the Army, serving on active duty in World War II, in the Indo-China campaign. He continued his military career after the war as an officer in the Connecticut Air National Guard's 103rd fighter group, returning to active duty during the Korean conflict. He retired from the Air National Guard as a major in 1963.

Early in his professional career, he worked as an engineer for the W.S. Rockwell and Spencer Turbine companies. He joined the Connecticut Natural Gas Co. in 1951 and worked in several executive positions, including engineering, sales and marketing, and operations. He retired after 30 years as vice president of customer relations.

While living in East Hartford, Conn., he was a member of the Town Council, a Scout leader and active in the local chapter of Rotary International, serving as president and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. In retirement he was a literacy volunteer, active in the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, a devoted member and usher in Holy Family Catholic Church of Hilton Head, S.C., and presently a communicant of Christ the King Catholic Church in Mashpee.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary C. and Patricia Cass of Westerly, R.I., and Paul R. Cass, M.D., and Helene Cass of Eliot, Maine; his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Betty Cass of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; five grandchildren, Michelle A. Cass of New York City, David and Alicia Cass of Westerly, R.I.; and Blake and Maura Cass of Eliot, Maine; four nephews, Bill Cass of Coronado, Calif., Scott Cass of Minneapolis, Minn., Tim Cass of College Park, Texas, and Randy Cass of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a niece, Lisa Cass-Smith of Eugene, Ore.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Marianne Cass.

CASS - Charles H. Cass, 80, of 19 Pinehill Blvd., Mashpee, Mass., died Friday, May 4, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, in St. Rose Church, Church Street, East Hartford, Conn. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. There are no calling hours and no procession from the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Ann Home, 195 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, Conn.

SILVA - Ruth (Price) Silva, 90, of 34 Salter St., Portsmouth, died March 1, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 6 at the Fellowship Hall of the Green Acre Baha'i School in Eliot, Maine. Committal services will be held at Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, at 3 p.m., Monday, May 7. Please omit flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to the Center for Seniors, 127 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Roland T. Barnaby

HAMPTON - The funeral for Roland T. Barnaby, 88, of 16 Thorwald Ave., who died April 18, 2001, was held Saturday, May 5, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Molly Barnaby was flutist.

Private interment was in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Pastor Knowlton.

Maryann Stewart

WESTBROOK, Maine - A funeral service was held on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, for Maryann Stewart of Westbrook, who died May 1, 2001, in Portland. In attendance were members of her family, friends, and members of her extended family who live and work at Community Partners in Westbrook. She was remembered in a service offered by the Rev. Real Nadeau of St. Raphael's Parish in Kittery.

A time of remembrance and sharing was offered by the parish at the church following the service.

Arrangements were by J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Sharon Rynard

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services were held on Friday, May 4, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, for Sharon Rynard of Rice Avenue, who died on May 1, 2001, in Togus. In attendance were friends, family and representatives from her many volunteer associations, including American Legion Post No. 6 of Portsmouth, N.H., and the York Veterans of Foreign Wars post; as well as former co-workers from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

The American Legion posted an honor guard and offered a service recognizing her years of service to her country as a retired member of the U.S. Navy. The veterans flag was presented to her husband and children by Post Cmdr. Donald W. Poisson.

A funeral service followed, led by Deacon Claude Spencer of St. Christopher's Church in York. A time of sharing and remembrance was held at the Days Inn in Kittery after the service.

Services were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Calvin Buckman

KITTERY, Maine —Graveside services were held on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot for Calvin Buckman of Rogers Road, Kittery, who died May 2, 2001, in York. In attendance were friends, family and neighbors, as well as former co-workers from Public Service of New Hampshire.

A service was offered by the Rev. Steven Aldrich of the Church at Spruce Creek in Kittery. Also given were kind words of remembrance by those who knew Mr. Buckman.

Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Nancy Goss

KITTERY, Maine - A graveside funeral service was held on Friday, May 4, 2001, for Nancy Goss, formerly of Kittery, who died Dec. 30, 2000. In attendance were friends and family. A service was offered by the Rev. Linda Hurst of the First Parish Congregational Church in York. Burial took place in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery.

Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Rhea A. Coburn

WOLFEBORO - Rhea Adele Coburn, 94, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Linda Coburn of York, Maine, after a six-year battle against cancer.

She was born in Springfield, Mass., on Feb. 10, 1907. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon W. Coburn, in 1959. Together they owned and operated the Colonial Arms Inn and Barn Dining Room in Wolfeboro for decades. She enjoyed gourmet cooking and several forms of needlework. She was an avid reader.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly C. Severance of Wolfeboro; son Bruce G. Coburn of York; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

COBURN - Rhea Adele Coburn, 94, of Wolfeboro, died on May 4, 2001. There will be no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held in the Lakeview Cemetery, Wolfeboro. Donations in her memory may be made to the Visiting Nurses/Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894; or the Visiting Nurses/Hospice of Southern Maine, 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909. Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro, is in charge of arrangements.

George R. Hovey Jr.

IPSWICH, Mass. - George R. Hovey Jr., of 104 Linebrook Road, husband of Frances E. (Gerow) Hovey, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, in the Masconomet Rehabilitation Center, Topsfield, following his extended illness. He was 74 years old.

Born in Ipswich, Nov. 22, 1926, son of the late George R. and Blanche (Decker) Hovey, he was educated in Ipswich public schools, graduating from the Ipswich High School with the Class of 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and after his honorable discharge enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a tech sergeant after 21 years of service.

married in 1944, the Hoveys settled in Rowley, and following their travels while enlisted in the Air Force, moved to their current Ipswich residence in 1966. He went to work at the Ipswich Savings Bank, from which he retired following many years of employment as a loan officer, vice president and trustee.

He was an active member of the John T. Heard Masonic Lodge, the Ipswich Conservation Commission, the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce, Ipswich VFW Post 1093, Amvets Post 201, and past president of the Ipswich Lions Club. He was an avid hunter and sportsman, enjoyed skeet shooting, and played catcher with the Ipswich Over 30 Softball League.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a son, George R. Hovey III and his wife, Carol Swingle, of Piqua, Ohio; a daughter, Marcia J. Cowan and her husband, Larry, of Greenland, N.H.; grandchildren, Melissa Hovey and George R. Hovey IV, both of Ohio; his brothers, Donald Hovey of Rowley and Jere Hovey of Newburyport; a sister, Ruth Hamilton of Rochester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

HOVEY - George R. Hovey Jr., 74, of Ipswich, Mass., died on May 5, 2001. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich. Visiting hours Tuesday, 6-8 p.m., with a service by Ipswich VFW Post 1093 at 7:30 p.m. Burial in Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich, will be private. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Northeast Region, 66Y Concord St., Wilmington, MA 01887.
