Richard N. DeCost
HAMPTON - Richard N. DeCost, 65, of 17 Godfrey Ave., died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at his home.
He was born March 18, 1936, in Brockton, Mass., the son of the late Norman F. and Dora L. (Pasanelli) DeCost.
He lived in Brockton for many years and was a graduate of Brockton High School and Bentley College in Boston.
He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army, and later served with the Marine Corps.
He worked in the shoe industry for Converse Shoe Co. in North Reading, Mass., and had also worked for New Balance Co.
He was a tri-athlete and competed in the National Veterans Golden Age Games in Kansas, where he won four gold medals in swimming and bicycling, and in New York where he won a silver medal and bronze medal. He was the 1960 Golden New England Gloves Light Weight champion for boxing.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, a life member of the VFW Post No. 14000, and member of the D.A.V. Chapter 13 of Exeter.
He moved to New Hampshire in 1977 and had lived in Hampton for several years.
Family members include his wife of 10 years, Ann (Mattocks) DeCost of Hampton; two sons, Richard D. DeCost and his wife, Deneen L., of Rochester; and Scott A. DeCost and his wife, Jennifer M., of Rochester; one daughter, Donna J. DeCost of Lakeville, Mass.; one stepson, Douglas J. Daudelin and his wife, Jodi, of Strafford; one stepdaughter, Diane R. Smith and her husband, Scott, of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; one sister, Janet M. Shea of Quincy, Mass.; one cousin, David Wilson and his wife, Janet, of Brockton, Mass.; his stepmother, Shirley DeCost of S. Easton, Mass.; and one niece and one nephew.
DeCOST - Richard N. DeCost of 17 Godfrey Ave., Hampton, died April 24, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Friday, April 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
Thomas B. Easterly
PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for Thomas B. Easterly, DDS, 37, of Portsmouth, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Wednesday. Services were held at the Middle St. Baptist Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Robert Lamson, former pastor, officiated, and the Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor, assisted. A reading from "A River Runs Through It" was given by Tom's wife, Rachel S. (Lamson) Easterly. Mr. Murray McNair was organist.
In attendance were members of the church, a large delegation of family, friends, professional associates, and representatives from Sagamore Animal Hospital and Piscataqua Animal Hospital.
Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Martindale.
Bearers were Peter Easterly, John Easterly, Peter Fleche, Steven Oxholm, Brian Gosselin, Peter Wadsworth, Stu Polkal, Jeff Whittig and Shaun Ennis.
Judith P. Giovanis
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Judith P. (Stathapoulos) Giovanis, 78, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, Wednesday, with services held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Angelo Pappas, presbyter, officiated. George W. Vergados was cantor. Ushers were Gus Zoulamous and Paul Muryn.
In attendance were members of the church and the parish council.
Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Pappas.
Bearers were George Giovanis, George Agganis, Peter Coussoule, and James Coussoule.
Sadye Schwartz
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Sadye (Freaman) Schwartz, 91, of 55 Lafayette Road, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Wednesday. Services were held at Temple Israel in Portsmouth. Rabbi David Mark officiated. Words of remembrance were given by sons, Donald Schwartz and Robert Schwartz and the president of the board of directors, Leslie Schwartz.
In attendance were members of the temple, including representatives from the board of directors, Sisterhood of the temple, Brotherhood of the temple, and Hadassah. Also in attendance were representatives from the National Council of Jewish Women and Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star of Portsmouth.
Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.
Bearers were Elliot Lubel, Richard Grossman, Harold Moldoff, Alan Rubin, Donald Schwartz and Robert Schwartz.
Ruth C. Small
PORTSMOUTH - Ruth C. Small, 73, of 928 South St., Edgewood Centre, left us on her heavenly journey, Sunday, April 22, 2001.
Born in the Puddle Dock neighborhood of Portsmouth on Dec. 21, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Percy and Julia (Douglas) Small.
Ruth spent her entire life in Portsmouth, most of it in Puddle Dock, now called Strawbery Banke. She took much pride in her old neighborhood and would tell many curious new friends of her upbringing and adventures there.
She spent many years volunteering for various Portsmouth programs. She also worked for the Dietitian Department of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She had the qualities of an incredible sense of humor and caring ways for friends and family.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Blanch Washok and Lucille Burns, both of Portsmouth; and three brothers, Benjamin Small, Roy Small and Gene Watson, all of Portsmouth.
Survivors include one sister, Altona Mahan of Portsmouth; one brother, Robert Watson of Delaware; a special family member, George Francois of Portsmouth; nieces and nephews of Ruth include of the Mahan family, Albert, Robert and Jack; of the Washok family Margaret, Benjamin, James and Richard; of the Benjamin Small family, Patricia and Judith; of the Roy Small family James and Glen; of the Gene Watson family, John, Gene, Glen and Julie; of the Robert Watson family Robin, James and April; of the Burns family, nephew Ricky Burns; Special sister-in-law, Anna Mae Small and sister-in-law Lee Small; many more extended family; many friends of the Margeson Apartments, Edgewood Centre, and the Portsmouth Housing Authority.
SMALL - Ruth C. Small, 73, of 928 South St., Edgewood Centre, Portsmouth, left us on her heavenly journey April 22, 2001. A graveside service will be held at the Highland Cemetery, Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine, Friday, 10 a.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
John M. Groux
NEWMARKET - The funeral for John M. Groux, 51, of 24 Moonlight Drive, formerly of Stratham, was held Thursday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. Services were held in the Newmarket Community Church. The Rev. David E. Wouri, pastor, officiated. Organist was Susan Adams. Words of remembrance and a poem were offered by Isabelle Donovan. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Anna M. Laughlin
DOVER - Anna M. Laughlin, 87, of 60 Middle Road, died peacefully Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Langdon Place, surrounded by family and friends.
She was born in Lawrence, Mass., on May 18, 1913, the daughter of John and Ursula J. (Butrimas) Jerackas and moved here 53 years ago when she got married.
She was a former employee of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, supply department, and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Anna was a member of St. Joseph Church.
The widow of James "Larry" Laughlin who died Jan. 22, 1999, she is survived by two sisters, Aldona Rosselle of Methuen, Mass., and Eleanor Jerackas of Lawrence, Mass.; her sisters-in-law, Audrey Bergeron of Dover, Marion Loughlin (her constant companion and caregiver), Kathleen "Kay" Tuttle and her husband, Roland, of Dover; her brother-in-law, John Loughlin and his wife, Jean, of Milton; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many friends.
LAUGHLIN - Anna M. Laughlin, 87, of Middle Road, Dover, died April 26, 2001. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 9 this evening (Friday) at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave. Burial will follow in the family lot at St. Mary New Cemetery. It is requested that there be family flowers only. Those who wish are invited to make memorials in her name to Seacoast Hospice Care, 662 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820; or to the charity of one's own choice.
Gerard J. Donnelly
MANCHESTER - The Rev. Gerard James Donnelly, O.S.B., Saint Anselm College professor, Benedictine monk and priest, died April 25, 2001, after struggling with a long illness. He was 79.
A native of Manchester, he was the son of James Christopher and Margaret (Davitt) Donnelly, and the stepson of Anna (Gauvin) Donnelly. The Rev. Gerard was educated in local Catholic schools and entered Saint Anselm College in 1940 as a candidate for the Abbey. Following his junior year at the college, he made his novitiate at St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pa., and professed simple vows on July 2, 1943.
After graduation from Saint Anselm College in 1944, he studied at St. Basil Seminary in Toronto and at Saint Anselm Abbey. He was solemnly professed on July 11, 1946. On Sept. 7 of the same year, he was ordained to the priesthood in St. Joseph's Cathedral by the Most Rev. Matthew F. Brady, the late bishop of Manchester.
The Rev. Gerard then began graduate studies at St. Paul's Seminary of the University of Ottawa, where he earned a licentiate in sacred theology. Upon returning to the Abbey, he began his work in the department of classical languages, where he taught Latin and Greek for 15 years. He also served the college in a number of other posts, including manager of the bookstore, director of audiovisual services and director in the residence halls.
His active ministry was spent in weekend assistance in many of the parishes of the Diocese of Manchester, including Saint Raphael Parish and St. Joseph Cathedral, both in Manchester, and most recently at St. Joseph's Parish in Epping.
Throughout his retirement, the Rev. Gerard continued an active ministry, visiting the city's hospitals and nursing homes almost daily. He was also active in the Red Cross blood donation program and encouraged others to follow his example.
The Rev. Gerard's final days were spent in the Bishop Peterson Residence, a diocesan nursing facility for priests in Manchester. He leaves several family members, including Sister Ruth M. Donnelly, R.S.M., Sisters of Mercy, Windham; William F. Donnelly of Dorchester, Mass.; and several nieces and cousins.
The Rev. Gerard was predeceased by his brother the Rev. Brendan P. Donnelly, O.S.B., former president of Saint Anselm College, who died Nov. 30, 2000.
DONNELLY - The Rev. Gerard James Donnelly, O.S.B., died April 25, 2001, at the age of 79, after a long illness. Visiting hours will be from noon to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Lady Chapel of Saint Anselm Abbey Church in Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Tuesday in the Abbey Church. The Most Rev. Joseph J. Gerry, O.S.B., bishop of Portland, Maine, and former abbot of Saint Anselm, will be the principal celebrant. Abbot Matthew K. Leavy, O.S.B., will be the homilist. Burial will be at St. Leander Cemetery on the Abbey grounds. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Saint Anselm College Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Aner M. Walters
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - Aner M. (Bates) Walters, 91, widow of Lawrence E. Walters, of 47 Blake St., died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.
Born in Kittery, Maine, on January 23, 1910, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Bates.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.
Survivors include two daughters, Aner Nelson of Presque Isle and Marion Saucier of Mapleton, Maine; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
WALTERS - Aner M. (Bates) Walters, 91, of 47 Blake St., Presque Isle, Maine, died April 25, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Chapel.
Margaret Goodin
PORTSMOUTH - Margaret (Predham) Goodin, 72, of 185 Edmund Ave., died Monday, April 23, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born on Sept. 11, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of Patrick and Mary (Coady) Predham Sr.
A resident of Portsmouth for the past 34 years, she had served on the Board of Registrars for the city of Portsmouth for the past 15 years. She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church and was past regional president of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve.
The widow of Charles S. Goodin Sr., who died in 1989, she is survived by four children, Charles Goodin Jr. of Lee, and Mary A. Thorne, Michael W. "Mickey" Goodin and Robert D. Goodin, all of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; three brothers, Patrick J. Predham Jr. and Richard Predham, both of Pawling, N.Y., and William Predham of Hudson; one sister, Delores Dance of Pawling, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
GOODIN - Margaret (Predham) Goodin, 72, of 185 Edmund Ave., Portsmouth, died April 23, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Catherine Church. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. Christina B. Torrey
HAMPTON - Christina "Tina" Bonsey Torrey, 70, of 1 Robie St., and 209 Main St., Eliot, Maine, died at her home in Hampton on Thursday, April 26, 2001, after a three-year battle with cancer, under the loving care of Seacoast Hospice, her husband, Alden C. Torrey, and many friends and family.
Tina was born in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, Feb. 22, 1931, the daughter of the late Levi S. Surette and Rose (Fournier) Surette, who died Feb. 15, 2001.
She attended Dover-Foxcroft Academy and graduated from Mercy Hospital, Portland, Maine, as a registered nurse. After her marriage to Guy E. Bonsey on Oct. 25, 1952, she moved to the Seacoast in New Hampshire where she worked as a registered nurse for Dr. Conroy of Portsmouth before raising her family. She later worked for Dr. Jo-Ellen Thomas at Exeter Family Medicine from 1969 through 1995.
While raising her five children, Tina provided her love and her home for 52 foster children through Catholic Charities. She avidly enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crossword puzzles, jumbles and singing. Her true passion was nature. She hiked and enjoyed her motor home, taking annual trips to Florida.
In 1987, Tina fell in love with Alden C. Torrey of Eliot, Maine, and they were married on Oct. 3, 1987. She was predeceased by her first husband, Guy E. Bonsey, who died in 1986; and a sister, Gloria Surette.
In addition to her husband, loving family members include her children, Leo C. Bonsey and his wife, Sherry, of Eliot, Maine; Guylene Barrett and her husband, Richard, of Derry; Victoria Thomas of Exeter; Caite Bonsey of Los Angeles; and Gerald Bonsey of Cape Neddick, Maine; two brothers, Gerald Surette and his wife, Deddie, of Mount Laurel, N.J.; and Patrick Surette and his wife, Rhonda, of Old Orchard, Maine; four sisters, Rita Knowlan of Strong, Maine; Odella Crawford and her husband, Dan, of Worland, Wyo.; Jane Collins and her husband, Rocky, of Fort Dodge, Colo.; and Marguerite Dodson, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; six grandchildren, Richard and Krista Barrett of Wells, Maine; Julie Barrett of Dover, Tina Thomas of Exeter, Cynthia Barrett of Manchester, and Tawnie Thomas of Exeter; two beautiful great-granddaughters, Rheianne and Ellieah Barrett; a very dear friend, Norma Brindamour of North Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.
TORREY - Christina "Tina" Bonsey Torrey, 70, of 1 Robie Lane, Hampton, and 209 Main St., Eliot, Maine, died April 26, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, Tuesday at 12 noon. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the Bassett Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, at a later date. Wendy L. Roberts
ANDOVER, Mass. - Wendy Lee Roberts, 47, of 22 Railroad St., died after a long illness at her home on Wednesday, April 25, 2001.
A native of Winchester, Mass., she was born Aug. 26, 1953, the daughter of Kenneth P. and Norma (Lindstol) Roberts of Exeter, N.H. Wendy grew up in Reading, where she graduated from Reading High School. She received a B.A. in nursing from the University of Massachusetts, and a master's of science from Boston College.
She had been employed at Shriners Hospital, Massachusetts General and most recently at Brigham and Woman's Hospital, all in Boston.
In addition to her parents, she leaves three children, Erin, Elizabeth and Emily Daly, all of Andover; her sister, Kim Beringer of Mooresville, N.C.; two nieces and a nephew; and her former husband, Dr. William Daly of Andover.
ROBERTS - Wendy Lee Roberts, 47, of 22 Railroad St., Andover, Mass., died at her home on April 25, 2001, after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 1, at 3 p.m., from the Exeter Congregational Church, Front Street, Exeter. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Burn Center, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.
Henery Bedell
TILTON, N.H. - A graveside committal service and burial for Henery Bedell of Tilton, formerly of Kittery, Maine, were held Thursday afternoon at the Baptist Cemetery in Kittery Point. Words of remembrance and prayers were recited at the graveside. Funeral services were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.
PORTSMOUTH - Arline B. (Burgess) Grant, 81, widow of Charles W. Grant, Blossom Street, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at her home.
Born in Augusta, Maine, on April 27, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Percy E. and Sylvia (Haskell) Burgess. She attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1938.
She was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II.
Survivors include three children, Charles B. Grant of Midland, Mich., Gary J. Grant of Portsmouth, and Kathy J. Grant of North Hampton; three grandchildren, Charlotte E. Grant of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Ryan Harned and Greg Harned, both of North Hampton; two sisters, Margaret Place of Eliot, Maine, and Barbara Earle of York Beach, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Percy E. Burgess Jr. of Portsmouth.
