Diane Rowell
KITTERY, Maine - Diane Rowell, 58, of Litchfield Road, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001.
She was born April 21, 1942, in Portsmouth, N.H., and lived most of her life in the Portsmouth-York-Kittery area. She graduated from Traip Academy and Gorham State Teachers College and obtained her master's degree from the University of Maine.
She taught physical education at Marshwood High School for 25 years. For several years she worked part-time at Pine Tree Country Store. She owned and operated Winnies Restaurant for eight years, starting in 1987. For more than three years she ran the stray cat program at Creature Comforts, socializing stray and feral cats for adoption and resulting in more than 300 successful placements.
Diane "Queen of Cats" died there of a heart attack while caring for her brood.
Survivors include her mother, Bobbe Rowell of Kittery; two brothers, Peter M. Rowell of Kittery and Richard Rowell of Sanford; and a nephew, Peter Rowell Jr.

Gregory D. Karpenko
CHESTER - Gregory David Karpenko, 11, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry.
Born April 12, 1989, in Exeter, he was the son of David and Pamela (Wise) Karpenko of Chester. Gregory was born again, a child of God, who loved climbing trees and hockey.
He is survived by six brothers, Christopher, Kenneth, Jonathan, Nicholas, Josiah, and Matthias; and two sisters, Sharon and Katheriane, all of Chester; maternal grandparents, Sandy and Paul Karpenko of Victor, N.Y.; and Linda and Fran Comden, of Webster, N.Y.
KARPENKO— Gregory David Karpenko, 11, of Chester, N.H., died March 28, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Thursday) at Nutfield Funeral Home, 3 Windham Road, Derry. Christian services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at Fellowship Bible Church, 48 Rod and Gun Club Road, Chester. The Rev. Thomas Bard of the Fair Haven Baptist Church in Auburn, N.H., will officiate. Burial will be in the later spring in Great Hill Cemetery in Chester.
Jennie Herne
YORK, Maine - Jennie (Donnell) Herne, 85, of 9 Young Lane, died early Wednesday morning at the York Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Robert R. Herne Sr., who died in 1988.
A lifelong resident of York, she was born Jan. 6, 1916, daughter of the late Frederick and Mary (Olmstead) Donnell, and was a graduate of York High School, Class of 1933.
She was the proprietor of "Jennie's All Around Shop," a virtual landmark in the York area. She was also assistant manager of the York Harbor Reading Room and had done private catering in the York Harbor area for 40 years. She was an avid bowler and was a member of the Gad Abouts.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan M. McGuire and husband, Thomas, of Buzzard's Bay; daughter-in-law, Sandra J. (Dufresne) Herne of York; grandchildren Cherie A. Herne of York; Christopher Herne of Sacramento, Calif.; Michael McGuire of Buzzard's Bay; and Kevin McGuire of Weymouth; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her son, Bobby Herne, who died May 27, 1998.

Frances E. Simonelli
HAMPTON - The funeral for Frances E. Simonelli, 87, of 698 Lafayette Road, Hampton, was held on Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was celebrant. Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Nelson K. Ward was organist. Members of the Catholic Women's Club were in attendance.
Services were also held at the Salvatore, Rocco & Sons Funeral Home in Everett, Mass., on Wednesday. Burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, Mass.

Robert G. "Bob" Hartford Sr.
PORTSMOUTH - Robert G. "Bob" Hartford Sr., 78, husband of Corinne (Nault) Hartford, of 14 Worthen Road, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Rochester on May 10, 1922, he was the son of the late Gordon B. Hartford and Lillian (Griffin) Hartford Hopey and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.
During World War II, he served in the 8th Army Air Force 401st Bombardment Squadron as a radio operator with the rank of technical sergeant. He flew 30 missions over Germany including the bombing on Berlin, and one year over the Himalayan Mountains. He also flew Louie Mt. Batton over the Hump in India. He flew on the Sho-Sho Baby, which is now at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and on the Jub-Jub Bird.
Prior to his retirement in 1980 at the age of 58, he was employed as a foreman electronics mechanic at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He had 36 years in government service and received many commendations.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association.
Besides his wife of 54 years, survivors include a daughter, Donna Dube of Portsmouth; three grandsons, Eric Boice of Hampton, Ronald Ross of Boston and Robert P. Balboni Jr. of Portsmouth; one great-grandson, Brenden Griffin Boice of Hampton; two brothers, Stanley Hartford of Meredith, N.H.; and Francis Hartford of Eliot, Maine; three nieces; and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his son, Robert G. Hartford Jr., in 1971; and his brother, Carlton Hartford, who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
HARTFORD - Robert G. "Bob" Hartford Sr., 78, of 14 Worthen Road, Portsmouth, died March 29, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the chapel. Flowers will be accepted.
Louise G. Feldmann
WILMINGTON, Del. - Louise G. Feldmann, 80, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Carol Feldmann.
She was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1943, and worked as a chemist at Jackson Lab for DuPont Co. before marrying her husband of 55 years, George W. Feldmann.
She was a long-standing member of the Hanover Presbyterian Church and was a past member of High Point Swim Club, the DuPont Country Club and the Wilmington Trail Club. She was a leader in the Girl Scouts for many years and was a substitute teacher in math, science and physical education. She also volunteered her time as a tutor at West End Neighborhood House.
An avid sports enthusiast, she had a lifelong devotion to playing tennis, squash and field hockey. She was a lacrosse referee and toured Holland with the U.S. team. She was a sectionally ranked field hockey referee as well.
She was predeceased by her husband, George, and sister, Dorothy Pryor.
In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Carol Feldmann, survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Jill F. and R. Allen Brandt of North Hampton, N.H.; Joel Feldmann and Ben Brungraber of Keene, N.H.; brother and sister-in-law, Forest and Ruth Griffin of Exeter, N.H.; six grandsons, Mr. and Mrs. Brent Feldmann of Wilmington; Jamie and Ryan Brandt of North Hampton, N.H.; Griffin and Carl Brungraber of Keene, N.H.; and Asher Feldmann of Castine, Maine; and great-granddaughter Grace Feldmann of Wilmington.
FELDMANN - Louise G. Feldmann, 80, of Wilmington, Del., died March 27, 2001. A memorial service will be held today (Friday) at the Hanover Presbyterian Church, Wilmington. A New Hampshire service will be held later in the spring at the time of burial. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her name to the UNH Foundation, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824.
Charles S. Higgins
NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Charles S. Higgins, age 79, of Maple Street, formerly of Kittery Point, passed away at his residence on Thursday, March 29, after a long illness.
He was born July 22, 1921, in Eliot, son of Phillip and Agnes Junkins Higgins.
In 1998, he was presented with the Joseph T. Sayward Employee of the Year Award for his 37 years of excellent service at the Maine Turnpike Authority.
His true passion was with the sea. Charlie had been a lobsterman off the coast of Kittery for 62 years. Following retirement, he and his grandson, Charlie, did lawn maintenance in the area for 10 years. Charles and his wife, Annie, lived in North Berwick for the past five years.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley and Donald Higgins; and a sister, Bertha Simons.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Annie Patch Higgins, daughter, Margaret Higgins, and grandson, Charles Xavier Higgins, all of North Berwick; brother, Raymond Higgins, and sister, Shirley Brooks, both of Kittery Point; and several nieces and nephews.

William J. McGraw
PORTSMOUTH - William J. McGraw, 85, of 255 F.W. Hartford Drive, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, after a brief illness.
Born July 9, 1915, in Dorchester, Mass., he grew up in Albany, N.Y., and graduated from Albany State Teachers College. He taught at Stoneleigh College in Rye along with his bride, Elinor Conklin. Thereafter, he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Yale University and worked as a research chemist for DuPont in the photoproducts department until his retirement in 1978.
After several years of consulting work that took him all over the world, he and Elinor moved from Wilmington, Del., to Portsmouth in 1990, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Known to his friends as Dr. Jazz, he was a lifelong devotee of big band music.
Survivors include daughter Jane E. Torrey, her husband W. Peter Torrey of Portsmouth, and their two children, Charles and Alison; daughter Kathleen A. McGraw and her husband, Thomas W. Hughes, of Atlanta, Ga.; son William J. McGraw Jr., his wife Donna of Wilmington, N.C., and their two children, Chase and Holland; son Thomas C. McGraw, his wife Hilary of Dallas, Texas, and their three children, Sam, Harry and Nick; two sisters, Ethel Hoffman of Wilmington, N.C., and Geraldine Brady of Albany, N.Y.; and his dear friend, Margaret Neville of Rye.
MCGRAW - William J. McGraw, 85, of 255 F.W. Hartford Drive, Portsmouth, died March 28, 2001. A Memorial Mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. today (Friday) at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Ethan W. Haller
RYE - Ethan W. Haller, 22, of 31 Birchwood Drive, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 in Raymond.
He was born in Wenatchee, Wash. on Oct. 25, 1978, the son of Edwin F. and Paisley (Fonda) Haller of Rye. He had resided in Rye since 1992 coming from Hampton.
Mr. Haller, a senior at UNH in Durham, would have graduated in May. He also owned and operated Haller Property Maintenance for the past four years and he recently was employed by Harbour Capitol Corporation of Hampton.
In addition to his parents, family members include his brother, Seth A. Haller of Rye; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Douglass C. Fonda Jr. (Lois) of Rye; his paternal grandparents, William and Georgia Haller of Ruch, Ore.; and several aunts, uncles, and a cousin.
He was a member of Bethany Church of Greenland and participated in several missionary trips to Bolivia and the Ukraine.
HALLER - Ethan W. Haller, 22, of 31 Birchwood Drive, Rye, died March 29, 2001. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland. Howard Lester Gunnison Jr.
BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine - Howard Lester Gunnison Jr., 64, of Boothbay Harbor, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at St. Andrew's Hospital.
Born Jan. 19, 1937, in York, Maine, he was the son of the late Howard L. and Barbara L. Winningham Gunnison. He lived in Kittery and attended local schools. He graduated from New England Institute in Boston. He was a funeral director, licensed in both Maine and Massachusetts. He was employed by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections - MCI Cedar Junction. He was also employed with his family's business, Gunnison's Motor Service, and was at one time York Country Deputy Sheriff, and a policemen in Bridgton, Maine.
He and his wife summered in the Boothbay region for many years before retiring there from Wrentham, Mass.
He was a railroad enthusiast. His hobby and love was working at the Edaville Railroad in South Carver, Mass. Mystic Valley railroad Society Wiscasset-Watervilled-Farmington Railway Society.
He was a member of the Masons York and Scottish Rites, and was a past president of the Swedish Square and Compass Club. He was also a member of OES, Kiwanis and the Viking Club of Braintree, Mass.
A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Melba Lord Gunnison; three daughters, Cynthia Ann Whitman, of Quincy, Mass., Wendy Barbara Gunnison of Wrentham, and Kristin Elaine Davis; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Robert Gunnison of Benson, Vt.; two sisters, Shirley Hamel of Pittsburgh, N.H., and Carol Drew of Kittery, Maine; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
GUNNISON - Howard Lester Gunnison Jr., 64, of Boothbay Harbor, died Friday, March 30, 2001. A visiting hour will be held from noon - 1 p.m., Monday, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Government Street, Kittery. A funeral service will follow. Edna B. Benway
PORTSMOUTH - Edna B. Benway, 84, of 188 Jones Ave., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation in Portsmouth.
Born in North Troy, Vt., August 10, 1916, she was the daughter of the late John and Edith G. (Thomas) Watkins. Raised in North Troy, she had resided for most of her life in Hudson, Mass. She came to live with her daughter in Dover in 1996 and has resided in the Portsmouth nursing home since 1997.
She worked as a warehouse clerk for many years for the TJX Company of Worcester, Mass., which supplied the TJ Maxx stores and the former Zayre department stores.
Family members include a son, John A. Benway of Framingham, Mass.; a daughter, Mary-Jane Nickerson of Dover, N.H.; three granddaughters, Natasha D. Benway, Tania R. Benway and Emilyanne E. Benway; a brother, John Watkins of Auburn, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
BENWAY - Edna B. Benway, 84, of 188 Jones Avenue, Portsmouth died March 29, 2001. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. John Alfred Klufts
EXETER - John Alfred Klufts of Sherwood Forrest, Exeter, N.H., died at his home Thursday, March 29, after a long illness.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., on Dec. 19, 1918, he was the son of Adrian and Leonie (Medauer) Klufts of North Andover, Mass. He resided with his beloved wife, Helen A. (Slack) Klufts, in Methuen, Mass., for 40 years before moving to Exeter in 1984.
He attended Lawrence and North Andover schools. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1937 and attended Lowell Technical College.
At the time of World War II, John was employed at the Wood Mills and left for service in the Army. He spent two and one half years in the Aleutian Islands of Attu, Adak, and Kiska where he distinguished himself as a warrant officer in charge of the 179th Station Hospital. He was honorably discharged with the rank of master sergeant.
Klufts' work career brought him into two rewarding professions. First, he was a noted "BurgerMeister" among the Greater Lawrence German Community by being the master preparer of German meats at Klier's Deli of Lawrence. In 1962, he started his second career at Western Electric in North Andover where he worked until his retirement. His expertise as a Microwave Technician brought him to the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair where a microwave bay station that he worked on was a special display.
Klufts was also an active member of his community serving as a past sachem of the Improved Order of the Red Men of Methuen, a drummer in the Methuen Legion Band, Past President of the Gill Avenue Associates, and was active in several PTAs in Methuen.
He was a communicant of St. Monica's Parish of Methuen and St. Michael's of Exeter. He was also a past member, in Methuen, of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus.
In addition to John's work and community service, he developed artistic talents in painting, crafts, and jewelry making, built a family summer camp at Province Lake in New Hampshire, and always showed his great dancing and drumming skills.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Exeter; four children, George Slack of Falcon Heights, Minn., Mary Lee Salisbury of Groveland, Mass., Carol E. Klufts of San Leandro, Calif., and Joan T. Goodwin of Londonderry, N.H. He also leaves eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
KLUFTS - John Alfred Klufts of Sherwood Forrest, Exeter, died at his home Thursday, March 29, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Brewitt Funeral Home at 14 Pine St., Exeter. funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Michael's Church. This will be followed by a bereavement reception in the parish hall. Committal Services, held at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, North Lowell Street, Methuen, Mass., will be presided over by Father David Keene of Saint Monica's Parish. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends that donations be made to the "Meals on Wheel" program in Exeter, N.H., in care of Carol Ross.
Dorothy (Warren) Upham
EXETER - Dorothy (Warren) Upham, 90, died March 29, 2001, at an Exeter health care facility after a lengthy illness.
Born July 16, 1910, in Leominister, Mass., she was the daughter of William and Mary Ellen "Nellie" (Herlihy) Warren. She was educated in the Manchester, N.H. school system and was a 1928 graduate of Manchester High School Central.
Until her retirement , she had been employed as an inspector by J.F. McElwain Shoe Company.
She had lived in Hampton, N.H. for more than 30 years and was an active member of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton, N.H. She was a former communicant of St. Pius X Church in Manchester. She was predeceased by her husband, Milton Upham, who died in 1995.
Members of her family include one brother, John Warren of Manchester; one sister, Gladys Crosby of Manchester; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
UPHAM - Dorothy (Warren) Upham, 90, died March 29, 2001. HAMPTON - The funeral for Eileen E. Perkins, 83, of 87 Dearborn Avenue, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Rev. George E. Ham, pastor was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was the organist and Mary Lou Arcidi was the soloist. Alter servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The readings were by Sr. Doris Ouellette and Sr. Theresa Malouin.
The gifts were presented to the alter by Mrs. Perkins' husband and daughter, Charles L. Perkins and Patricia E. McGrady. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton with the rite of committal by Fr. Ham. Pall bearers were John Cameron, Chris Cameron, Jim McGrady and Richard Aldrich.
