Alfonso J. Cabrera
PORTSMOUTH - Alfonso J. Cabrera, 73, of 250 Market St., died at his home on Monday, March 5, 2001.
Born in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 30, 1927, son of Idelfonso and Lillian (Keating) Cabrera, he moved to Portsmouth at the age of 3. He was a graduate of St. Patrick School and of Portsmouth High School in the class of 1946.
He served in the Naval Reserve for a year and in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952.
He worked with his father as a barber and continued as the owner of Al's Barber Shop for 40 years. He also invested in real estate in the Seacoast area.
He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, where he was a eucharistic minister, a member of the Portsmouth Rotary, the Athenaeum, the Warwick Club, the VFW, and the American Legion. He was recently appointed a corporator of the Piscataqua Bank. He was a former director of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Portsmouth Board of Adjustment, and chairman of the Newington Board of Adjustment.
He was also a former president of the barber's union. He worked as a volunteer fund-raiser for Portsmouth High School, Strawbery Banke and St. Patrick School. He enjoyed reading, gardening, golfing and time spent with his family.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary (Powers) Cabrera; the children of his late brother and sister-in-law, whom he considered his own, Patricia Nichols and husband Charles and daughter Gabrielle, Joseph M. Cabrera II and wife Litti and their four sons, Kevin Cabrera and wife Kathy and his three children, and Kathryn Bean and husband Jim and two daughters; his sisters, Lucy Mahoney and husband Jim and their three children, and Juana Fox and her husband, Pat, and their three children; his brothers-in-law, Merle Webber and his four children, Edmund Powers and his wife, Anna, and two daughters, Robert Powers and his wife, Graciela, and their two children; and a sister-in-law, Jeannette Connors, and her two children.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ramona Webber, and a brother, Joseph Cabrera, and his wife, Susanne.
CABRERA - Alfonso J. Cabrera, 73, of 250 Market St., Portsmouth, died March 5, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday morning at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Mr. Leslie N. Locke
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Leslie N. Locke, 82, of 195 Washington St., Portsmouth, were held Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mr. Locke's children, Timothy Locke and Patricia Desjardins.
Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring.
Sherman Herdman Jones
DOVER - Sherman Herdman Jones, 93, of Dover, died Thursday, March 8, 2001.
He was born March 15, 1907, in East Boston, Mass., the son of William Herbert Jones and Matilda Maude (Herdman) Jones. He lived for many years in Melrose, Mass., and in Essex, Mass., for 25 years. Most recently he lived in Eliot, Maine, for 25 years.
An AJA registered architect since 1935, Mr. Jones designed and built banks throughout New England, first with his father and later with his son, Sherman Davis Jones, including many banks in Portsmouth and Dover.
An active outdoorsman and conservationist, Mr. Jones enjoyed hunting, fishing, sculling and boating from his dock on the Piscataqua River. During World War II, Mr. Jones earned the civilian Navy "E" for Excellence for his work converting industrial plants throughout New England to defense work.
He married Marion Page Duffill in 1930. She survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Shirley Jacques of Eliot, Maine, and her husband, William; a son, Sherman (Dave) Jones of Sanibel Island, Fla., and Essex, Mass., and his wife, Sandra; a daughter, Beverly Farrar Federau of East Lansing, Mich., and her husband, Douglas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
JONES - Sherman Herdman Jones, 93, of Dover, died March 8, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Eliot (Maine) Congregational Church. This spring, a graveside service will be held in Essex, Mass. Those wishing to commemorate Mr. Jones may make a donation in his memory to the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, the Seeing Eye Dog Fund, or a charity of one's choice. Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home of Dover is handling the arrangements.
Earl P. Cheever II
YORK BEACH, Maine - Earl P. Cheever II, 48, of York Beach, formerly of Lynn, Mass., died suddenly Tuesday while conducting an accreditation review at Regional Medical Center in San Jose, Calif. He was the husband of Cheryl (Courtemanche) Cheever, with whom he shared 21 years of marriage.
Born in Chelsea, Mass., son of Earl P. and Joan A. (Kaminski) Cheever of Lynn, he was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1970. He attended the Boston Architectural Center and later received his bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He had been a resident of Maine for the past five years, previously residing in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., for 13 years. He resided most of his life in Lynn.
He was employed as a project manager of Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities and Architect at the DeStefano & Associates Construction Managers in Portsmouth, N.H., for several years. He was a member of the American Institute of Architecture and was licensed in New Hampshire and California.
He was a member of Division 10 Ancient Order of Hibernians of Lynn. He was active in softball leagues and formed the Girls Softball League in Ranchero Santa Margarita, where he served as vice president of the league and also coached the traveling team. He also established girls softball for the freshmen and sophomores at Tribuco Hills High School in Mission Del Norte, Calif.
In addition to his wife and parents he leaves two daughters, Monica M. Cheever of Orange, Calif., and Kathleen A. Cheever of York Beach; his grandmother, Barbara Kaminski of Lynn; four brothers, Wayne L. Cheever and his wife, Merle, of Salem, Mass.; Joseph Cheever and his wife, Carol, of Lynn; Frank J. Cheever and his fiancée, Donna MacDonald, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and Paul J. Cheever and his wife, Jennifer, of Revere, Mass.; two sisters, Janice M. Cheever of Newburyport, Mass., and Joan A. Monteith and her husband, Robert, of York; several nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Margaret Erickson-McLaughlin of Springvale; and his father-in-law, Milton Courtemanche of Easley, S.C.
CHEEVER - Earl P. Cheever II, 48, of York Beach, Maine, formerly of Lynn, Mass., died March 6, 2001. A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. in St. Pius V Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Richard Anthony Ciesielski
NEWPORT, N.C. - Richard Anthony Ciesielski, 73, of Newport, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Carteret General Hospital.
He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps for 22 years, retiring as a gunnery sergeant at the Marine Barracks, Portsmouth, N.H.
He is survived by two daughters, Wanda A. Baxter of Lee, N.H., and Carol M. Housewright of Vista, Calif.; two sons, Gregory Richard Ciesielski of Havelock and Donald F. Ciesielski of York, Maine; a sister, Rose Brudek of Buffalo, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia A. Ciesielski; and two grandchildren, Gregory Richard Anthony Ciesielski and Ashley Elizabeth Ciesielski.
A memorial Mass will be held at 7 tonight at Annunciation Catholic Church, Havelock, with Father Peter McKeown officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Harold H. Kollmeier
PORTSMOUTH - Harold H. Kollmeier, 92, widower of Madeleine A. (Brewster) Kollmeier of 20 Islington St., died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born in College Point, Long Island, N.Y., on July 18, 1908, the son of the late William and Louisa (Schmidt) Kollmeier.
He was a graduate of St. Fidalis in College Point, N.Y.
Prior to his retirement, he was a technician for Amerace Corp.
He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth; the South Venice Civic Association and the South Venice Yacht Club, both in South Venice, Fla. He was also a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 2378 in Inglewood, Fla.
Survivors include a son, Harold H. Kollmeier Jr. of Cambridge, Mass.; a daughter, Evelyn Shahan of Boothbay, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
Catherine M. Buell
HAMPTON - Catherine M. Buell, 83, of 66 Moulton Road, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the Seacoast Health Center.
She was born in Coolboy, Tinaheley, Ireland, on March 1, 1918, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Lennon) Johnson. She came to the United States in 1945 and had resided in Hampton since 1951.
During World War II, she was working as a nurse in England when she met her husband. She and her husband owned and operated dairy farms in East Concord and Stratham before opening Buell's Ice Cream and Dairy Bar in North Hampton in 1963 until their retirement in 1978.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and had wintered for 23 years in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Family members include her husband of 56 years, Kenneth H. Buell of Hampton; a son, Paul E. Buell and his wife, Linda, of Lawrence, Mass.; a daughter, Jean C. Gould of Meredith; a granddaughter, Chelsea Buell of Lawrence; a sister, Maureen Dooley of Birmingham, England; and many nieces and nephews in Ireland.
She was predeceased by her brothers Tom, Mick, Dick and Sean, and her sister Nan.
BUELL - Catherine M. Buell of 66 Moulton Road, Hampton, died March 8, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Ruth (Price) Silva
PORTSMOUTH - Ruth (Price) Silva, 90, widow of Joseph P. Silva, of 34 Salter St., died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the Langdon Place of Dover.
She was born in Wildwood, N.J., on March 6, 1910, the daughter of the late Albert and Bessie (Harvey) Price.
She was a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston, Class of 1931.
She had taught piano and voice for more than 50 years in Portsmouth. She played piano for the Kenner School of Dancing and for many years was the soloist at the Unitarian-Universalist Church (South Church) in Portsmouth as well as many other churches. She was a member of the Portsmouth Baha'i Community.
Survivors include three sons, Alden Marshall and his wife, Carolyn, of Hudson; Barry Marshall of Lexington, Mass.; and Bruce Marshall of Greenland, N.H., and Hobe Sound, Fla.; grandchildren, Craig Marshall of Whitehorn, Calif.; Timothy Marshall of Hudson; Lee Marshall of Hudson; Laura Marshall of Berkeley, Calif.; Jon Marshall of Greenland; and Bruce W. Marshall of Portsmouth; a great-grandson, Benjamin Marshall of Hudson; two sisters, Patricia Balcom of Coronado, Calif., and Dorothy Price of Wildwood, N.J.; a brother, James A. Price of Englewood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
J. Vernon Lyon
HAMPTON - The funeral for J. Vernon Lyon, 83, of 279 Bayside Road, Greenland, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were held at the United Church of Christ, North Hampton. The Rev. Michael Mulberry, pastor, officiated. Gail Adams was the organist. Words of remembrance were offered by Mr. Lyon's family.
Spring burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, Maine.
M. Erma Bristol
GREENLAND - M. Erma Bristol, 94, of 15 Lane Ave., died Monday, March 5, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation, Portsmouth, after a brief illness.
Born on Dec. 8, 1906, in Springfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Charles and Mabel (DeBos) Marcy and was a graduate of Classical High School in Springfield.
She had formerly worked as a clerk at the Registry of Deeds in Springfield.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Portsmouth. She was active in the Rhode Island Kennel Club, the Rhode Island Obedience Club, and in the support of the Massachusetts SPCA.
She had lived in Barrington, R.I., for 36 years, moving to the New Hampshire Seacoast in 1986. She had formerly resided in Portsmouth and Hampton Falls. She had summered at Jenness Beach, Rye, for 28 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Bristol of Greenland; and a longtime friend, Paula Palumbo of Riverside, R.I.
BRISTOL - M. Erma Bristol, of Lane Avenue, Greenland, died March 5, 2001, in Portsmouth. A memorial service will be held in the First United Methodist Church of Portsmouth, Miller Avenue, at a later date. Margaret T. Hanscom
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Margaret T. (Thompson) Hanscom, 95, of 928 South St., were held Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Millie Lamson was soloist. In attendance were members of the church.
Burial will be in the spring in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland.
Bearers were Richard Davis, John Hanscom, Wanda Hanscom, Nancy Hanscom, Thomas Davis Jr. and Maurice Hanscom.
Peter D. Jennings
HAMPTON - The funeral for Peter D. Jennings, 61, of Rye, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted at the Rye Congregational Church. The Rev. John A. Solie, pastor, and the Rev. Fred Cheney officiated. Donna Lewallen was organist. Words of remembrance were offered by family and friends.
Burial followed in the Central Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Cheney. The U.S. flag was presented to Mr. Jennings' widow, Gloria (Epperson) Jennings.
Janet E. Larson
LEE - Janet E. Larson, 43, of Lee, died March 6, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, after a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.
She was a 1976 graduate of Oyster River High School. She went to the University of New Hampshire and received her B.A. in chemistry and B.S. in animal science in 1981, M.Ed in science education in 1992, and A.A.S. applied animal science from the Thompson School in 1996. She was a lab instructor at the Thompson School, a science and biology teacher at Newmarket High School and Northwood Middle School from 1993-2000.
She spent eight years in the U.S. Army as an NBC and ordnance officer, and had tours in Korea, Germany and Operation Desert Storm.
She was very active in the raising and training of working border collies with the establishment of Caora Con Kennels in 1968. She won a Dog World Award of Canine Distinction in 1973 with her first dog. In 1976 she was selected as the New Hampshire state delegate to the national 4-H conference in Chicago for all her outstanding wins with her dog, and sheep dog demonstrations at state fairs.
Her correspondence on the breed with people all over the world led her to start and edit "Border Collie News" from 1976 to 1994. During college, she increased her research on the border collie so extensively, she wrote "The Versatile Border Collie" 1985 (Alpine Press). That book won her the Dog Writers Association of America Book of the Year, 1986. She completely expanded and revised her book in 1999. "The Versatile Border Collie" (second edition) has been considered the "last word" by people in the border collie, and dog world alike.
Her farm has been the destination for people worldwide for Sheep Dog Trials, Herding Clinics and private lessons.
She is survived by her parents, David and Lois Larson of Durham; her brother, Bruce and his wife, Kathy; sister, Lisa; brother, Douglas; and nephews, Ben and Sam.
LARSON - Janet E. Larson, 43, of Lee, died March 6, 2001. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society or Durham Ambulance Corps.
