Ruth (Price) Silva
PORTSMOUTH - Ruth (Price) Silva, 90, widow of Joseph P. Silva, of 34 Salter St., died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the Langdon Place of Dover.
Born March 6, 1910, in Wildwood, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Bessie (Harvey) Price.
She was a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston, Class of 1931.
She taught piano and voice for more than 50 years in Portsmouth, played piano for the Kennet School of Dancing and for many years was the soloist at the Unitarian-Universalist Church (South Church) in Portsmouth as well as many other churches. She was a member of the Portsmouth Baha'i Community.
Survivors include three sons, Alden Marshall of Hudson, Barry Marshall of Lexington, Mass., and Bruce Marshall of Greenland and Hobe Sound, Fla.; three grandsons, Craig Marshall of Whitethorn, Calif., Timothy Marshall of Hudson, and Lee Marshall of Hudson; a great-grandson, Benjamin Marshall of Hudson; a sister, Patricia Balcom of Coronado, Calif.; a brother, James A. Price of Englewood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Linwood A. Jackson
ROCHESTER - Linwood A. Jackson, 77, of 209 Milton Road, No. 64, passed away Sunday, Feb 25, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Gardiner, Maine, Feb. 6, 1924, he was the son of Ralph S. and Cora (Williams) Jackson Reardon.
He attended Gardiner schools graduating in 1941. After working for Hormel in Maine, he joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and was discharged in 1945. He then entered Ricker Jr. College from 1946 to 1947 and then Boston University from 1948 to 1952, graduating with a B.S. in business.
He joined the Air Force after graduating from B.U. He was a pilot at Pease with the 100th Bomb Wing flying B-47s, served two tours in Vietnam and was stationed at many bases in the states and overseas in Europe and Asia. He retired on July 1, 1974 and settled in Portsmouth. He moved to Rochester in 1999. He was a lifelong member of the Gardiner Elks Lodge No. 1293.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Glenn Miles; three grandchildren, Lisa, Adam, and Brett Miles of Houlton, Maine; and his loving friend of 17 years, Barbara Stevens of Rochester.
He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth of Gardiner; two sons, Robert in February 1999, and Bruce in March 2000.
JACKSON - Linwood A. Jackson, 77, of 209 Milton Road, No. 64, Rochester, died Feb. 25, 2000. At his request their will be no calling hours. His body was donated to the Dartmouth Medical School, Department of Anatomy, Hanover, NH 03755-3832. Donations may be made in his name to the school or a charity of your choice.
Belle Basford Slater
KITTERY, Maine - Belle Basford Slater, 95, formerly of Kittery Point, died March 2, 2001 in a West Paris health care facility.
Born in Kittery, she was the daughter of Asher B. and Eva Dame Damon and attended Kittery schools.
She was a homemaker all her life and was a member of the Saint Marks Methodist Church in Kittery, and was a lifelong resident of Kittery Point. Her enjoyment was entertaining her neighbors.
She is survived by two brothers, Charles D. Cutter of Rochester, and Robert Cutter of Northboro, Mass. She was predeceased by husband, Richard Slater, who died in 1959.
SLATER - Belle Basford Slater, 95, formerly of Kittery Point, died March 2, 2001. A graveside service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot this spring. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham, Maine.

Edward H. Higgins Jr.
YORK, Maine - Edward H. Higgins Jr., 58, of U.S. Route 1, loving husband and friend of Annette Fazio, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Chelsea, Mass., May 19, 1942, son of Edward H. and Lena (Gaunelli) Higgins. He received a master's degree in finance.
He worked in the defense industry as an aeronautical engineer and later as director of programs at L-3 Communications, headquartered in New York City, and traveled extensively with the company.
He was predeceased by his mother.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Fazio of York; his father and stepmother, Edward H. and Viola Higgins Sr. of Billerica, Mass.; and his stepfather, John T. Cahill of Saugus, Mass. He was the loving father of Jennifer Higgins of Oregon, Juliann Higgins Jensen of Oregon, Jonathan E. Higgins of Arizona, Alan E. Higgins of Pennsylvania and Gina R. Higgins of Pennsylvania; the stepfather of Sergio Armani of Pennsylvania, and Brian and Lisa Bair of York, Maine; grandfather to Steven Santillan of Arizona and Alexander Bair of York; brother of Mary F. Ravanesi of Everett, Mass., and Helene J. Cahill of Florida.
HIGGINS - Edward H. Higgins Jr., of York, Maine, husband of Annette Fazio, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in Boston. Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Christopher Church, York Street, in York. Patricia Wholey Harris
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Patricia Wholey Harris, 74, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at her home.
She was a native of Portsmouth and a resident of Huntsville for the past 9½ years. She retired from her job in the admissions office at Long Beach City College in 1991.
Survivors include three sons, Mike Harris of Birmingham, Ala., Steve Harris of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Dennis Harris of Huntsville; one daughter-in-law, Jan Harris; one sister, Terri Smith of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and one brother, John Wholey of Portsmouth.
HARRIS - Patricia Wholey Harris, 74, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at her home in Huntsville, Ala. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Laughlin's Funeral Home in Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice Family Care in Huntsville or to the American Cancer Society.
Peter D. Jennings
RYE - Peter D. Jennings, 61, of 601 Brackett Road, beloved husband and adored father, died on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the York Hospital after a courageous three-year battle against cancer.
Raised in Rye, he was born in Brattleboro, Vt., on March 19, 1939, the son of the late Granville D. "Jim" and Roberta "Bobby" (Kelly) Jennings. He was a 1958 graduate of Portsmouth High School and attended Newman Prep School in Boston.
He served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard as an electronics technician and saw 13 months of isolated duty in Adak, Alaska. He was the president and founder of Power Sound of New England, a 31-year-old business specializing in church sound systems. He was a ham radio operator for many years. He enjoyed travel and spent his winters with his wife in Don Pedro Island, Fla. They recently completed a cross-country road trip to San Francisco, the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Ariz., and Las Vegas. He loved sailing in his dream boat in the waters off Maine, and puttering in the flower garden every summer with his wife and daughter. He was a former member of the Portsmouth Country Club, the Portsmouth Yacht Club and the Down East Yacht Club in Bath, Maine.
Family members include his loving wife of 40 years, Gloria F. (Epperson) Jennings of Rye; a son, Troy D. Jennings and his wife, Jennifer, of Kittery; four daughters, Kelly K. Jennings of Kittery, Maine, Kim J. Whaley of Exeter, Kristy Leigh Jennings and Kerry Kathleen Jennings, both of Bel Air, Calif.; five grandchildren, Alex, Hayden, Joshua, Ethan and Blake; a brother, Granville E. "Ned" Jennings of Bangor, Maine; a sister, Rhoda Herrick of Mechanic Falls, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

J. Vernon Lyon
GREENLAND - J. Vernon Lyon, 83, of 279 Bayside Road, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at his home.
He was born Nov. 13, 1917, in Walpole, Mass., son of the late Herbert D. and Grace E. (Heath) Lyon.
He was a graduate of Canaan High School and the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor's degree in engineering. He lived for many years in Rye, moving to Greenland in January of 2000.
He was an electrical/nuclear engineer, working for Westinghouse for many years. He was the head engineer for the Nautilus, working on the reactor and electrical generation, and was honored as a Fellow Engineer for being well respected in the engineering field.
He enjoyed finish carpentry and was an artist.
Family members include his wife of 57 years, Ada M. (Prosser) Lyon of Greenland; three daughters, Sherill A. MacDormand of New Durham, Marilyn M. Wanyo of North Hampton, and Kathryn L. Mullholand of Greenland; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard Lyon of Chelsea, Mass., and Herbert E. Lyon of Nashua; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother and two sisters.
LYON - J. Vernon Lyon, of 279 Bayside Road, Greenland, died March 3, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the United Church of Christ, Atlantic Avenue, North Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 until the hour of the service on Wednesday. Terrence Rock McGarghan
ROCHESTER - Terrence ("Terry") Rock McGarghan, 61, of 17 Knight Court, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Born Aug. 14, 1939, in Burlington, Vt., he was the son of the late Dwight and Mercedes (Rock) McGarghan.
He had lived in Rochester since 1962.
He owned and operated the DJ company Musical Memories. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was a very active member of the Rochester community: Rochester Citizen of the Year; Rochester Opera House fund-raiser and auctioneer; Rochester Centennial chairman; Lilac Family Fun Festival; member of St. Mary's Church; St. Mary's Thanksgiving Raffle and Penny Sale; Rochester Jaycees, DSA Winner; life member of the Rochester Jaycees; Granite Statesman, highest award of the N.H. Jaycees; U.S. Jr. Ambassador, highest award of the U.S. Jaycees; Senator Award, highest award of the World Jaycees; member of Rochester Elks; Show of Shows I & II, performed as Ed Sullivan and The Blues Brothers; Knights of Columbus; Rochester Heritage Trust; Kiwanis member; Toastmasters; Emcee; President of the Club Victoire; Co-chairman of the Rochester MDA Telethon; narrator of the Rochester Christmas Parade; member of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce; founding board member of the Safe Halloween Program; director of the Rochester Alternative Baseball Program; Frisbee Hospital fund-raiser for the "Frisbee Follies"; Allain's Jewelry Softball Team; Arthur's Market Softball Team; Rochester City Councilor, Ward 5; mayoral candidate for Rochester; Channel 12 New England Cablevision host; Santa Claus for charitable events; March of Dimes Telethon; veteran of the U.S. Air Force, 1957-1965; WWNH: DJ, election coverage, sports commentator; past city director, Rochester Recreation Department; Rochester Courier reporter; Campus Copy business owner; realtor; Exeter Country Club golf pro during its centennial year celebration; DJ and Justice of the Peace.
Members of his family include his sons, Gary McGarghan of Rochester and Ryan McGarghan of West Palm, Fla.; his daughters, Karen McGarghan of Rochester and Paula Peter of Australia; his grandchildren, Danny and Even Drouin of Rochester; his sisters, Patricia Armstrong of Dallas, Tex., Candy Koenman of Berlin, Vt., and Kimberly McGarghan of Virginia.
He also leaves many friends.
McGARGHAN - Terrence ("Terry") Rock McGarghan, 61, of 17 Knight Court, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the new St. Mary's Church, Lowell Street, Rochester, with the Rev. Francis Kelso as celebrant. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Church of the Redeemer, Wakefield Street, Rochester. Any photos you may have of Terry may be brought to the service and will be put on a memory board. Burial will be in the spring in the Holy Rosary Cemetery. John H. Matthews
BURLINGAME, Calif. - Captain John H. Matthews died on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in Burlingame. Born on Sept. 13, 1920, in Portsmouth, Capt. Matthews attended Admiral Billard Academy and Vermont Academy.
He was a 1942 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He served in World War II with the U.S. Navy until April 1946. He had a 36-year career with Hoyt Shepston Inc., Custom House Brokers and Freight Forwarders, retiring as president of the firm in 1982.
His affiliations included director of the San Francisco Customs Brokers Association, the Merchant Marine Exchange, the Merchants Exchange Club and the U.S. Merchant Marine Alumni Association. He enjoyed his retirement years traveling, gardening and volunteering with Volunteers in Money Management (VIMM) for 14 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Beatrice Kroeze Matthews; a daughter, Pamela L. M. Kantz (husband David) of Coloma, Calif.; his grandchildren, Bryce P. Kantz and Evan S. Kantz; a sister, Louise M. Smith (husband Stanley) of Mystic, Conn.; two nephews; and three nieces.
MATTHEWS - John H. Matthews, of Burlingame, Calif., died Feb. 27, 2001, in Burlingame. Memorial services will be held at noon on Saturday, March 10, at Crosby & Gray, 2 Park Road, Burlingame. Donations may be made to the Center for Independence of the Disabled Inc. (VIMM), 875 O'Neill Ave., Belmont, CA 94002. Burial of his ashes will be in Portsmouth.
Leslie N. Locke
PORTSMOUTH - Leslie N. Locke, 82, widower of Shirley (McKenny) Locke, of 195 Washington St., died Monday, March 5, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born in York, Maine, on Feb. 2, 1919, the son of Mabel Priscilla Locke and William Alvin Snow.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was formerly employed as a welder and machinist at Simplex Wire and Cable.
Survivors include six sons, Leslie H. Locke of Portsmouth, Richard H. Locke of Portsmouth, Gerald A. Locke of Portsmouth, Raymond L. Locke of Rhode Island, Robert F. Locke of Kittery, Maine, and Timothy E. Locke of Portsmouth; four daughters, Patricia Desjardins of Portsmouth, Shirley Rollins of Rochester, Kathy Coombs of Cambridge, Maine, and Susan Goddard of New Durham; one sister, Arlene Birt of Portsmouth; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three sons, William Locke, Gary Locke and Thomas Locke.
LOCKE - Leslie N. Locke, 82, of 195 Washington St., Portsmouth, died March 5, 2001. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours at the Chapel will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Trudy Gould
PORTSMOUTH - Trudy Gould, 87, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at her home at 226 Park St.
Born June 6, 1913, in Nuremberg, Germany, she immigrated to the United States in 1938 and moved to Portsmouth in 1943. For many years she operated The Puritan Clothing Store with her husband, R. Walter Gould, first on Market Street, and then on Market Square.
Survivors include a son, William A. Gould, of Portsmouth; and a granddaughter, Rebekah Gould, of Boston.
GOULD - Trudy Gould, 87, of Portsmouth, died on Monday, March 5, 2001. There will be a reception for friends and family from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, at 226 Park St. in Portsmouth. Memorial donations may be made to The Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.
Norman A. Archambault
ROCHESTER - Norman A. Archambault, 86, of 50 Seasons Lane, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by his children.
He was born in Rochester on Feb. 22, 1915, the son of George and Rose (Perreault) Archambault and lived all of his life in Rochester. He was the widow of Claire (Bernier) Archambault, to whom he was married for 49 years. She died in 1994.
He was a graduate of Rochester High School in the class of 1935, and at the age of 29 he purchased commercial property on North Main Street in Rochester and subsequently established the Archambault Furniture Co., Inc., serving the tri-city community for 22 years. He was a communicant of the Holy Rosary Church in Rochester and was also a member of the Rotary Club, Toastmasters International and the Rochester Country Club. Upon retirement, he and his wife wintered in Florida for many years, enjoying the ocean, golf and ballroom dancing. In later years, he enjoyed domestic and international travel and also became a member of the Rochester Lodge of Elks, where he became an avid billiards player.
He is survived by his five children: Bonnie Barnes of Little Rock, Ark., Gayle Archambault of Waltham, Mass., Dr. Richard Archambault of Weston, Mass., Elaine Penchansky of Manchester, and Janet Archambault of Rollinsford; as well as 11 grandchildren: Michael, Keith, Christopher, Michael, Michelle, Eric, Nicole, Eric, Ryan, Sarah-Danielle and Mariah.
ARCHAMBAULT - Norman A. Archambault, 86, of Rochester, died Monday, March 5, 2001. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at Holy Rosary Church in Rochester, with burial in the spring in Holy Rosary Cemetery, also in Rochester. Arrangements are under the direction of the H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester, N.H.
