Dr. Richard E. Barron
BRADENTON, Fla. - Dr. Richard E. Barron, 75, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at his home in Bradenton.
He was born on April 1, 1925, in Brookline, Mass., son of Dr. Maurice E. and Ethel (Makowsky) Barron.
He attended Moses Brown in Providence, R.I., from 1938 to 1943, when he went to serve with the U.S. Air Force until 1946. After his military service, he attended Brown University and Tufts Medical School in Boston, graduating in 1953. He served his surgical residency and research at Central Maine Medical Center and Albany Medical School. From 1958 to 1959 he did surgical service at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Togus, Maine.
In 1959 he started in the private practice of surgery and general practice in Winthrop, Maine, retiring in 1994. After semi-retirement, he took several assignments doing locum tenens in the Western states.
While in private practice in Winthrop, he served as president of the Kennebec Medical Society Legislative Committee of the Medical Association; was a member of the Masonic Lodge from 1960 until he died; was a medical examiner for the state of Maine for many years; was a Federal Aviation Administration examiner for many years; and was a school and summer camp physician.
His hobbies included sailing, working with stained glass, building model ships, traveling and cooking.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Jane (Downton) Barron; a daughter, Roberta Kaye; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Joan.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Barron of Bradenton; a son, Dean Edward Barron of Vancouver, B.C.; two daughters, Cathy Jane Feller and her husband, Stephen, of Dayton, Maine; Jennifer Lee Hunt and her husband, Jon, of St. Albans, Maine; a stepson, Thomas Frank Blackett of Boston; a stepdaughter, Deborah Ruth O'Brien and her husband, Dave, of Kittery, Maine; and 10 beautiful and dear grandchildren.
BARRON - Dr. Richard E. Barron, 75, of Bradenton, Fla., died Feb. 19, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on March 3, 2001, at the Faith United Church of Christ in Bradenton. Mrs. Bernice (Brake) Wade
KITTERY, Maine - Mrs. Bernice (Brake) Wade, 80, of Kittery, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.
She was born Sept. 8, 1920, in Northfield, N.H., the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Abigail (Nudd) Brake. She attended local schools in New Hampshire.
She married Joseph Wade in November 1938 in Tilton, N.H. They later moved to the Kittery area where they worked and raised a family for many years. She was predeceased by her husband in 1971.
She worked at the former Data General Co. in Portsmouth, N.H., as an assembler, retiring in 1986.
She is survived by three daughters, Bonny Fernald and Beatrice Hunter, both of Kittery, and Barbara Davies of Tilton; one son, James Wade of Bath; a sister, Doris Catalino of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Joseph Fernald, who died in 1996; a son, Joseph R. Wade in 1999; two sisters; and two brothers.
WADE - Mrs. Bernice (Brake) Wade, 80, of Kittery, Maine, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, following a long illness, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Real Nadeau, pastor of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Kittery, will conduct services. A graveside committal service and burial will follow at Cavalry Cemetery in Portsmouth. Visiting hours will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the "Resident Activity Fund" in care of Hannah Rothemel, Homestead Nursing Home, 459 U.S. Route 1, Kittery, ME 03904.
Dorothy M. Gray
LANCASTER - Dorothy M. Gray, 93, died on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Weeks Memorial Hospital.
Born in Derry, she was the daughter of the late John Colby Davis Jr. and Janet Isabel (Slater) Davis. A graduate of Pinkerton academy and Plymouth state College, she taught school in New Hampshire and retired from the Kittery (Maine) School Department after serving as a school principal and teacher for many years.
She had lived in Dedham, Mass., Portsmouth, and Kittery Point, Maine, for many years before moving to Lancaster in 1998.
She had attended Audubon camping and study facilities in Maine, being honored by the Kittery Public Schools for her interest in nature and bringing it to her classroom. She was an avid and knowledgeable bird watcher; an artist, working in oils and creative stitchery; and in her retirement continued her studies at the University of New Hampshire and traveled in this country and abroad.
Wife of the late Forrest E. Gray, she leaves a daughter, Dorothy-Ann MacInnes and her husband, B. Scott MacInnes, of Dedham; four grandchildren, John S. Ingram of Scituate, Mass.; Deborah A. (Ingram) Dimmitt of Lancaster; Elizabeth A. (Ingram) Bishop of Hopedale, Mass.; and Christopher F. Colhard of Dedham; seven great-grandchildren; and four nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Edward L. Davis of Natick, Mass.; and a sister, Edyth M. Beauchamp of Rockville, Md.
GRAY - Dorothy M. (Davis) Gray, 93, of Lancaster, N.H., died Feb. 23, 2001. Funeral service at 12 noon on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, preceded by a visiting hour from 11 a.m. to noon. Friends invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Maine Audubon Society. Irja Blodgett
KITTERY, Maine - Irja Blodgett, 83, of Old Dennett Road, died Feb. 21, 2001, at York Hospital.
Born in Owen, Wis., on Feb. 16, 1918, she was a daughter of Victor and Selma (Kalio) Mattila. She had resided in the area for four years near her daughter and grandchildren, previously living in Somerville, N.J. She was a faithful member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Raritan, N.J., enjoying her close friends and church family.
She was an avid reader and truly enjoyed her family and spending time with them.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Broido of Kittery and her former husband, Steven Broido, of New Castle, N.H.; a son, Terry Blodgett and his wife, Pat Hill, of North Plainfield, N.J., and former wife, Shelie Blodgett of Plainfield, N.J.; a brother, Toive Mattila of California; three sisters, Lilly Wilson of Wisconsin, Elsie Schultz of Owen, Wis., and Ina Garces of San Francisco, Calif.; five grandchildren, Chelsea, Elysa and Stephanie Broido of Kittery, T.J. Blodgett of Long Island, N. Y., and Todd Blodgett of Norfolk, Va.
BLODGETT - Irja Blodgett, 83, of Old Dennett Road, Kittery, Maine, died Feb. 21, 2001, at York Hospital. Arrangements will be private. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine.
Viola D. Perham
ARUNDEL, Maine - Viola D. Perham, 83, formerly of Old Limerick Road, Arundel, Maine, died Feb. 25, 2001, at Pine Point Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Scarborough.
She was born in Eliot, Maine, November 6, 1918, a daughter of Charles D. and Georgia Tobey Tetherly.
She attended the Eliot and Kittery school systems. She graduated from Traip Academy in Kittery. She worked in the dietitian department at Portsmouth Hospital before her marriage in 1956. She was mostly a homemaker and mother and did extensive volunteer work in both Saco and Arundel. She was an Avon lady as a hobby in the Arundel area. She had been a resident of Arundel for over 30 years, having moved from Saco.
She was very active in civic affairs in both Arundel and Saco. She attended the First Parish United Church of Christ, Saco, PTA of Arundel. She did volunteer work in many areas and was a member of the Mother's Club and also was a Denmother. She was a charter member of the Volunteer Auxiliary Women's Fire Department of Arundel.
She is survived by her husband, Alexander Perham of Arundel; one son, Jeffrey Perham of Arundel; two daughters, Zoe Ann Garrett of Arundel and Deborah Jo Lizotte of Biddeford; two sisters, Alice Mayhew of Eliot and Rosalin Davis of Kittery; and four grandchildren.
She is predeceased by one brother, Herbert Tetherly.
PERHAM - Viola D. Perham, 83, formerly of Arundel, Maine, died February 25, 2001, at Pine Point Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Scarborough, Maine. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco, Maine, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco. The Rev. Peter Mercer will officiate. Margaret O. Johnson
EXETER - Margaret O. Johnson, 90, of 17 Hampton Road, and St. Petersburg, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.
Born in Danvers, Mass., on Dec. 15, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Daniel J. and Sarah E. (Walsh) Johnson.
She worked for 47 years as an operator for the former New England Telephone Company and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She lived in Salem, Mass., for many years before moving to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1970. She had summered in Hampton since 1957 and returned in 1996 to live in Exeter.
Family members include two sisters, Elizabeth Weinhold, of Exeter, and Sally Wholley, of Brentwood, and many nieces and nephews.
JOHNSON - Margaret O. Johnson of Exeter died Feb. 26, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery in Hampton.
Mary Ruth (Driscoll) Brown
PORTSMOUTH - Mary Ruth (Driscoll) Brown, 75, of 287 Peverly Hill Road, died Feb. 24, 2001, at Beverly Health Care in Greenville, N.C. She was born Oct. 2, 1925, the daughter of James and Alice (Chamberlain) Driscoll. She was the wife of the late Walter Brown. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Vachon, and her husband, John, of North Carolina; a son, Douglas Brown, of Portsmouth; a sister, Marguerite Bylo, of Newburyport, Mass.; and a brother, James Driscoll, and his wife, Dorothea, of Hampton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
BROWN - Mary Ruth (Driscoll) Brown, of 287 Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth, died Feb. 24, 2001. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Laura M. Picardy
DOVER - Laura M. (Milbury) Picardy, 84, formerly of Danvers, Mass., died Saturday evening, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Charles F. Picardy.
Born in Nova Scotia on Sept. 5, 1917, daughter of the late G. Douglas and Lillian (Stepp) Milbury, she was raised and educated in New Brunswick, Canada. She had been a resident of Danvers for more than 50 years prior to her moving to New Hampshire last year.
She had been employed at Salem Hospital, where she did Medicare and inpatient billing, for more than 35 years prior to her retirement and had volunteered at the hospital well after her retirement.
She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Danvers and also an active member and treasurer of the U.S. Power Squadron, Beverly Chapter, for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra J. Tucker, of South Berwick, Maine, and a brother, Nathan Milbury, and his wife, Doris, of Rye.
PICARDY - Laura M. (Milbury) Picardy, 84, of Dover, died Feb. 24, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the First Baptist Church, Water Street, Danvers, Mass. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers, Mass.
Charles Emery Smith
CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Charles Emery Smith, 59, of Whippoorwill Ridge Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at York Hospital after a long illness.
Born Dec. 13, 1941, in Laconia, N.H., he was the son of Richard Emery and Ida (Dodge) Smith and grew up in Manchester, N.H.
He attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., where he was president of the senior class. He graduated from UNH in 1965 with a degree in hotel administration.
He was district manager in the Education Food Service Division of Sodexho Marriott (previously Saga Food Service), where he was employed for more than 35 years, having started his career as a college student working for Saga Food Service at UNH.
As a child he attended Camp Belknap on Lake Winnipesaukee. He was an antique auto and boat enthusiast, spending the summers at Lake Winnipesaukee.
He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church in York and a longtime member of the Arundel Yacht Club in Kennebunkport, where he was previously a member of its board.
He was predeceased by his parents and by a young son, Douglas Emery Smith, who died in 1971.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Carlena "Lee" (Lutton) Smith of Cape Neddick; a son, Joseph Charles Smith of Cape Neddick; four daughters, Carlena Ida Smith of Cape Neddick, Lisa Vespa of Kittery, and twins Amy Smith of Kennebunk and Stephanie Smith of Portland; and three grandchildren.
SMITH - Charles Emery Smith, 59, of Cape Neddick, Maine, died Feb. 28, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York, Maine. Private interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester. Ralph Phylmore Webber Jr.
ELIOT, Maine - Ralph Phylmore Webber Jr., 71, died upon arrival at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born May 22, 1929, in Albion, he was the son of the late Ralph P. and Forstina (Barton) Webber Sr. He attended local schools.
Later in life he moved to Newcastle, N.H., and then in 1943 moved and settled in Eliot. He was a self-employed carpenter for many years and retired in 1991.
He enjoyed raising animals on his land in Eliot and spent his leisure time fishing and hunting. His outstanding qualities were kindness and mercy, which made him very dear to many.
Those keeping him in loving memory are his wife, the former Beverly Cookson, whom he married in 1952, in Albion; his three daughters, Jocelyn Donavan of York Beach, Flora Duffy of Eliot, and Corina Peckham of Nokomis, Fla.; his two sons, Ralph Webber III, of Fairfield and Karl Webber of Eliot; seven beloved grandchildren; two sisters, Orrilla Danforth and Lorina Martins, both of Florida; and two brothers, Fred and Donald Webber, also both of Florida.
He was predeceased by two sisters.
WEBBER - Ralph Phylmore Webber Jr., 71, of Eliot, Maine, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional hospital. A service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall, 14 Dennett Road in Kittery, Maine. Jehovah's Witness minister Ron Suave will conduct services. Visitation hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road in Kittery.
Dorothy M. Gray
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Dorothy M. (Davis) Gray, of Lancaster, were held on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with the Rev. William T. Richards Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in Newington Cemetery.
Robert Douglas Chandler
SOMERSWORTH - Robert Douglas Chandler, 61, of 79A Franklin St., died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.
Born Jan. 7, 1940, in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of Carl T. and Marion (Cook) Chandler. When he was young his family moved to Wells, Maine, where he attended school and graduated from Wells High School, Class of 1959. After school he moved to Kittery, where he settled until his retirement.
He is lovingly remembered as a man who always had a smile for those he came in contact with and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He had been employed as a mover by Red Ball Movers, and many other local moving companies until his retirement.
He is survived by his children: a son, James Chandler of Kittery, Maine, and a daughter, Tina Brown of Somersworth; three grandchildren, Cassandra Lyn Brown, Colby Chandler Brown and Jameson Ray Johnston Chandler; his former wives, Kathie Howard of Kittery and Karen Buehne of South Berwick, Maine; and a close family friend whom he loved like a sister, Wilma Rideout of Kittery.
He was predeceased by a son, Douglas Chandler, in 1987.
CHANDLER - Robert Douglas Chandler, 61, of 79A Franklin St., Somersworth, died Feb. 27, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine.
