Caroline Alice (Nelson) Potter
EFFINGHAM - Caroline Alice (Nelson) Potter, wife of the late Harold T. Potter of Effingham, passed away at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, on Oct. 2, 2000, after a brief illness.
She was born July 14, 1911, the daughter of the late Harry Nelson and Avilla (Templeton) Nelson. She attended Effingham Grammar School starting at age 4, then went on to high school at the Parsonsfield Seminary in Parsonsfield, Maine. She completed her education at Plymouth Normal School, graduating in 1930. Subsequently, she taught all eight grades and all subjects in a one-room school in the mountain district of Effingham.
In later life, she worked at the Dix Shoe Company in East Rochester and at Frankson's Furniture Company in West Ossipee.
She was a charter member of the Effingham Historical Society, a charter member and past president of the Effingham Women's Club and chair of the Effingham Republican Committee. She also was active in the grange and held various town offices.
Caroline had a deep interest in the history of the town of Effingham and its people, and was always willing to help those who needed an extra hand.
She is survived by her sons, Eric and Paul Potter, both of Effingham; her daughter, Mary Andrews of Concord; a grandson, Roger Potter of Shelburne Falls, Maine, and a granddaughter, Amy Potter of Concord.
A committal service was held on Oct. 4 at the family cemetery on Town House Road in Effingham.
Donations in her memory may be made to either the Effingham Rescue Squad or the Effingham Preservation Society.

Carolyn Lewis Browne
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Carolyn Lewis Browne died on Oct. 3, 2000, after a short illness.
She was born in Flushing, N.Y., on May 31, 1916. She attended the public schools and received a bachelor of science degree in sociology from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., in 1937.
In 1939 she married William H. Browne and move to Peoria, Ill. In 1942, the couple moved to Columbus, Ohio, where Carol served as deacon and elder in the Boulevard Presbyterian Church. In 1982, they moved to Jackson, and in 2000 to the Canterbury Woods Retirement Community in Williamsville, N.Y.
While in Jackson, Carol was active in the Jackson Community Church, the Gibson Center for Senior Services and the Memorial Hospital. In 1991, she and her husband were received a Distinguished Service Award from the Kiwanis Club of Mount Washington Valley, and in 1996 they were presented with the Joseph D. Vaughn Award by the New Hampshire State Committee on Aging. These recognitions followed many years of volunteer work.
Carol is survived by her husband; her sons, William H. Browne Jr., and James L. Browne; her daughter, Margaret L. Page; and eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Jackson Community Church, with the Rev. Pojen Lee, assisted by Rev. Thomas Kilbourn, Carol's nephew, officiating. Interment will take place in Litchfield, Con., with Rev. Kilbourn officiating.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the memorial fund of the Jackson Community Church.
Eleanor May Beebe
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Eleanor May Beebe, 91, of Middletown, R.I., and formerly of Newport, R.I., died Oct. 2, 2000, at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport.
She was the wife of the late Chester W. Beebe Sr.
Born in Newport, R.I., on May 4, 1909, she was the daughter of John Rodda and Elizabeth (Palmer) Rodda.
Mrs. Beebe was a lifetime member of Trinity Church and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was a house mother at Vernon Court.
She was a summer resident of Fryeburg, Maine.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly J. Lawton, of South Bellingham, Mass.; three sons, John C. Beebe III, retired chief of Newport Police Department, of Newport, Robert Beebe, retired from Newport Fire Department, of Middletown, and Thomas Beebe, of Middletown; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Chester 'Peter' Beebe Jr.
Funeral will be held Thursday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. from the Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.

Matthew J. Mattingly
CENTER OSSIPEE - Matthew J. Mattingly, age 24, of Center Ossipee, formerly of Brockton, Mass., died suddenly on September 29, 2000.
Mattingly was born in Louisville, Ky. and was raised in Florida. He had lived in Brockton, Mass. for many years before moving to New Hampshire last year. He was employed as a healthcare provider at the Lakeview Neural Behavior Center in Effingham Falls.
He was the beloved husband of Mindy L. (LeBlanc) Mattingly; father of Nathaniel S. and Alexander J. Mattingly; son of Wilbur L. Mattingly Jr. of Kentucky and Helen M. (Bertholf) Roberts and her husband, Lonnie W. Roberts of Dunedin, Fla.; grandson of Helen M. Bertholf of Clearwater, Fla.; son-in-law of Marjorie E. and Joseph A. LeBlanc, both of Weymouth, Mass.; brother of Sarah Lee Mattingly of Brockton and Mark E. Mattingly of Dunedin, Fla. Also survived by his best friend, Jeff Ortiz of New Hampshire.
A funeral prayer service will be held in the McDonald Funeral Home in East Weymouth, Mass., corner of Charles and Middle Streets (at Central Square) on Thursday, October 5, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
Erich S. Koop
LOVELL - Erich S. Koop, 86, of Old Waterford Road in Lovell, Maine,, died on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Bridgton Hospital.
He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., the son of Henry and Anna Heitmann Koop.
He graduated from Amityville High School and also from Bowling Green University. He was a World War II Army veteran, and spent the war in a U.S. prison camp as an interrupter.
He started his work career with Colgate-Larsen Co., then went to JCPenny Co. He later worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years.
He was a past master of Amityville Lodge of Masons, and a member of the Kiwanis. He moved to Maine in 1969, and was predeceased by a son, Robert, in 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Inez Gorsuch Koop of Lovell, and one brother, Andrew Koop, also of Lovell.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family; burial will be in 4 Cemetery in Lovell.
Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
Esther C. Levy
CONWAY - Esther C. Levy, 81, of North Conway, N.H. died September 28, 2000 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine after a long illness. She was born in Westbrook, Maine, the duaghter of James and Emma Kinmond.
Her interests included golf, gardening, volunteer work, cooking, and she especially loved being with friends and family in the mountains surrounding her beloved North Conway.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, William Levy of North Conway, N.H.; two sons, Ronald Collins of Melbourne, Fla. and Dr. Michael Collins Sr., ofArlington, Va.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy LaChance of Scarborough, Maine.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 3 at 11 a.m. in the First Church of Christ Congregational in North Conway with the Reverend William P. Gardner officiating. Visiting hours will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. Donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, N.H. 03301.
Joseph Roland Paradis
CONWAY - Joseph Roland Paradis, 71, of North Conway, died September 28, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a brief illness. Born in Nashua, the son of Joseph and Alice (Prudhomme) Paradis, he has been a resident of North Conway for the past 15 years.
Mr. Paradis was a US Army veteran of the Korean War.
He had been the custodian at Carroll County Mental Health in Conway, for the past 15 years.
Mr. Paradis has no known relatives.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway with the Reverend James Livingston officiating. Burial will be held in the North Conway Cemetery.
Harold C. Robinson
CONWAY - Harold C. Robinson, 79, of Conway, died Sept. 26, 2000, at the SunBridge Rehabilitation Center in North Conway after a long illness.
Born in Tamworth, the son of Chester and Grace (Moody) Robinson, he lived in Maine for 13 years and in Vermont for 10 years before moving back to Conway in 1999.
While Robinson was in high school, he played the trumpet with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Robinson had worked for the Maine Central Railroad of 33 years, and retired as an engineer in 1987. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
His surviving family includes two daughters, Andrea R. Brown of Chatham and Stacey R. Cope of Wimberley, Texas; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three sisters, Bertha Eastwick and Beverly Damon, both of Tamworth, and Marjorie Wade of Conway; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three children, Michael F. Robinson in 1965, Kirsten Rajaniemi in 1988 and Steven J. Robinson in 1995.
Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
Charles Edward Lander
BRIDGTON, Maine - Charles Edward Lander, 78, of West Bridgton, Maine, died unexpectedly at this home on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000.
He was born in South Portland, the son of John and Edith Willey Lander. His family lived in several Maine towns. He graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield.
He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in China, Burma and India. He lived in Massachusetts for many years and worked for the Educator Biscuit Company and also for the city of Lowell in the maintenance department. After the death of his first wife, Alice, he married Reta Manchester, and moved to Maine in 1976. He was a member of the Bridgton Congregational Church and the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association.
He is survived by his wife of West Bridgton; two stepsons, Donald Carrigg of Cameron, W. Va., and Gerald Carrigg of Hampton; two stepdaughters, Patricia Dailey of Lowell, Mass., and Jacqueline Roe of Holland, Mass.; one brother, Alton Lander of Brunswick, Ga.; and two sisters, Beverly Cunningham of Burton, Mich., and Gwendolyn Foley of Westbrook.
A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Denmark, Maine, with the Rev. Richard Bennett officiating.
