James T. Fontaine
NORTH BERWICK, Maine - James T. Fontaine, 48, of 29 Turkey St., died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, after a long illness.
Born on Jan. 24, 1953, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Armand W. and Nena (Mullin) Fontaine and was a graduate of York High School.
He had worked in the maintenance department at Wheelabrator Corporation in Hampton for many years.
He had formerly resided with his grandparents, James "Vern" and Virginia Mullin, in York Harbor. He enjoyed going to local flea markets.
Survivors include his father, Armand W. Fontaine of Exeter; his mother, Nena Conley of Somersworth; and one brother, Eric Fontaine of Exeter.

Joseph J. Connors
EPPING - Joseph J. Connors, 61, of St. Laurent St., died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Bethel, Maine.
Born on July 3, 1939, in Freeport, Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late William and Katherine (DeGroff) Connors. He moved to Epping after serving in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1961. He coached Little League baseball in Epping for many years and also contributed to the construction of the original high school baseball field and the field at the Mary Folsom Blair Park in Epping.
He worked in the shipping and receiving department at United Machine & Tool Design Company Inc., in Fremont, for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Anne (Janelle) Connors of Epping; two sons, Michael Connors of Fremont, and Daniel Connors of Hampton; one daughter, Julie Callahan of Plainville, Conn.; and one grandchild.
CONNORS - Joseph J. Connors, 61, died on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. Wayne VanGundy will officiate the service. Kathleen D. Healey
STRATHAM - The funeral for Kathleen D. Healey, 94, of 28 Stratham Green, was held Monday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home in Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church. The Rev. Marc B. Drouin, pastor, was the celebrant. Denise Kelly was the organist, and Jennifer Gaines was the soloist. Acolytes were Joseph Latour, Al Markey and Ted Klemarzyck. The readings were by Cathy McCarthy and Tom Fitzgerald. The gifts were presented to the altar by Kate McCarthy and Liam Pillsbury. Words of remembrance were offered by Tom Fitzgerald. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.
Arnold L. Thompson
YORK, Maine - Arnold L. Thompson, 68, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, following a long illness, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Born Sept. 22, 1932, in Rockland, Maine, he was the son of the late Ralph Irving Thompson and is survived by his mother, Milian V. (Beal) Thompson, of Kittery Point.
He was a long-time self-employed lobster fisherman and had lived for the past 25 years in York. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1950 to 1953. He loved to read and was a devout supporter of the York Library. He loved his family and friends and was known by all as a generous and caring individual.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia Ann Fisk, whom he married in 1953, and was predeceased by his second wife, Patricia Ann Gallagher, whom he married in 1971.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his two sons, Evan Thompson of York and Steven Thompson of South Berwick; his stepdaughter, Vicki Poremba of Nottingham; his two stepsons, Martin Evans of Portland, Maine, and Keith Evans of Nottingham; one brother, John Thompson of Scarborough, Maine; and his cherished and loved 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
THOMPSON - Arnold Thompson, 68, of York, Maine, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, in Kittery, Maine. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Kittery Point, will officiate. Donations may be made to the York Public Library, 172 York St., York, ME 03909.
Roger Pollard Ramsdell
KITTERY, Maine - Roger Pollard Ramsdell, 79, of Palmer Avenue, the husband of Lessie Ann (Pemberton) Ramsdell, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Harbor Home, after a long illness.
Born in York, Maine, July 2, 1929, he was the son of Clarence and Maude (Duprey) Ramsdell and graduated from York High School. In his teen-age years, he was a logger.
He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army for 20 years, serving in both the Vietnam War and the Korean Conflict. From 1971 to 1977 he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pneumatic tool operator.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, working around the house and especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion in York and the V.F.W. in Portsmouth.
He was predeceased by two sons, Kenneth M. Ramsdell, who died in 1987, and Roger D. Ramsdell, who died in 1979, and by two brothers, Clarence Jr. and Kenneth George Ramsdell.
Survivors include his wife, Lessie Ann (Pemberton) Ramsdell of Kittery; two sons, Larry Riley of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Steven P. Ramsdell of South Berwick; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth (Julia) Ramsdell of Eliot; a first cousin, Richard Ramsdell of Cape Neddick, with whom he grew up; four grandchildren, Cory Dean Ramsdell, Ann Marie Ramsdell, Brandon Ramsdell and Jessica Ramsdell; four stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
RAMSDELL - Roger P. Ramsdell of Palmer Avenue, Kittery, Maine, died Feb. 5, 2001, at the Harbor Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Marita Legg
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Marita (Grant) Legg, 81, of 346 Pleasant St., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.
Born in Presque Isle, Maine, on Sept. 30, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Essie (Tosier) Grant.
She received her nursing degree from the University of Maine and served as a nurse in the United States Army during World War II.
She was formerly employed by the Pediatric Association in Quincy, Mass.
She was a member of All Souls Unitarian-Universalist Church in Braintree, Mass. She was a volunteer for the Braintree, Mass., public school system and the South Shore Campfire Girls Association and was the camp nurse for many summers at the Becket YMCA Camp in Becket, Mass.
Survivors include three sons, Dexter Legg of Portsmouth, N.H., Grant Legg of Ridgewood, Mass., and Martin Legg of Wilmington, Mass.; five grandchildren; one brother, Everett Grant of England; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Legg, and her daughter, Sharon King.
LEGG - Mrs. Marita (Grant) Legg, 81, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, died on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. No visiting hours. Hazel M. Assad
HAMPTON - Hazel M. Assad, 73, of 777 Lafayette Road, formerly of Kensington, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the Partridge House.
Born in Portsmouth, Oct. 25, 1927, she was the daughter of the late George and Nancy (Augustine) Tebbetts.
She attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.
She worked for the CBS Hytron Co. in Newburyport and for the Bailey Corp. in Seabrook.
She lived in Kensington for 26 years and prior to this in Seabrook, before making her home at the Partridge House since last February.
She was the wife of James P. Assad for 51 years.
In addition to her husband, family members include, three sons, Peter J. Assad of Ft. Myers, Fla.; David A. Assad of Salisbury, Mass.; Gary M. Assad of Raymond; two daughters, Karen E. Coles of Olympia, Wash.; Nancy D. Rossborough of Cornish Flat; seven grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one sister, Margaret Tebbets of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
ASSAD - Hazel M. Assad, 73, of 777 Lafayette Road, Hampton, formerly of Kensington, died Feb. 6, 2001. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Clarence G. Grindall
EXETER - Clarence G. Grindall, 84, of Sherwood Forest, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a long illness.
Born July 17, 1916, in Brooksville, Maine, he was the son of the late Richard and Mattie (Cain) Grindall.
He had resided in Exeter for the past 10 years. He had lived in Ashland, Mass., for eight years, and was a longtime resident of Weymouth, Mass.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a former member of an American Legion Post in Massachusetts.
For most of his working life, he was a self-employed plumber in the Boston area.
He was a member of the Portsmouth Seventh-day Adventist Church and a member of a Masonic Lodge in Massachusetts. In his spare time he enjoyed listening to semi-classical music.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Marilyn M. (Corey) Grindall of Exeter; one son, Bruce Grindall of Weymouth, Mass.; one daughter, Karen Taufman of South Egremont, Mass.; three stepchildren, Velisa Matheny of Burlington, Vt.; Paul Johnson of South Attleboro, Mass.; and Marsha Brodeur of Raynham, Mass.; two grandchildren, Joshua Taufman of Brighton, Mass.; and Jonathan Taufman of South Egremont, Mass; and several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
GRINDALL - Clarence G. Grindall, 84, of Sherwood Forest, Exeter, died Feb. 7, 200l. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Portsmouth Seventh-day Adventist Church, 861 Middle Road, Portsmouth. Pastor Rick Kunz will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. The Brewitt Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Sophie Lukas
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Sophie (Geranis) Lukas, 87, of 928 South St., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Tuesday, with services at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth. Father Angelo Pappas, Presbyter, was celebrant. Reader was Paul Muryn. Ushers were G. Spiro Mouflouse and Andy Bosen.
In attendance were members of the church; representatives from the Philoptochos Society and Daughters of Penelope, Aglaia Chapter No. 144.
Also in attendance were representatives from the Governor's Executive Council.
Bearers were Kevin Parker, Jeff Polizzo, Chuck Madison, Joe D. Goulis, Ron Coakley, Tim Policronis and G. Spiro Mouflouse.
Burial will be in the Greek Cemetery, Somersworth, in the spring.
Wake services were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Monday evening by Father Pappas.
Vinson E. Taggersell
RYE - Vinson E. "Vin" Taggersell, 74, widower of Rolean E. (Keil) Taggersell, of 171 Locke Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at his home.
He was born in Bronx, N.Y., on July 13, 1926, the son of the late Eldon and Florence (O'Hara) Taggersell.
He was a graduate of Tenafly High School in Tenafly, N.J. He attended Carnegie Tech in New Jersey, Fairleigh Dickenson and Columbia University.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater.
He worked locally for many years at McFarland Ford.
He derived great satisfaction through his volunteerism at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital and established many new friendships. Throughout his life, he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially the 48 years of marriage to his wife, Rolean. He was much loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was also an avid train collector and a builder of model trains.
Survivors include a daughter, Vilean Taggersell and her husband, Robert, of Portland, Maine; three sons, Lance Taggersell of Exeter; Scott Taggersell and his wife, Kathleen, of Kennebunk, Maine, and Brandt Taggersell of Rye; six grandchildren, Kai Taggersell, Cara Taggersell, Sean Taggersell, Lili Taggersell, Renata Levine and Caleb Levine; a brother, Carl Taggersell of Sparta, N.J.; a nephew; and his dog Ginger.
TAGGERSELL - Vinson E. "Vin" Taggersell, 74, of 171 Locke Road, Rye, died Feb. 7, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801, to benefit the Portsmouth Regional Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Services.
Roland J. Langlois
HAMPTON - The funeral for Roland J. Langlois, formerly of Bernard Drive, Rye, who died Feb. 2, 2001, was held on Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was the celebrant.
Marjorie Scully was organist and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. Salvatore DiVincenzo was acolyte. John J. Willis offered the readings. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Lavigne.
Catherine Barden
KITTERY POINT, Maine - A funeral was held on Jan. 30, 2001, for Catherine Barden 49, of Short Farm Road, who died suddenly at her home on Jan. 27, 2001.
Some of her favorite readings were chosen by her family, including readings from Shel Silverstein. The Rev. Jill Vogt officiated and many kind words were spoken by some of her close friends. Donations in her memory may be made to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.
Mr. Andrew J. Conway
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Andrew J. "Andy" Conway of 3205 Lafayette Road were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, Thursday, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at St. James Church, Portsmouth. Father Gary Lord was celebrant. A reading was given by Tom Conway. Lector was Thomas Ahearn. Altar servers were Richard Ward, Jane Milette and Theresa Hickey. Jean Goss was organist and vocalist was Janet Green.
Gifts were presented by Barbara Jean Conway and Jean Conway. Eucharist ministers were Donna Hayes and Rose Condolon. Words of remembrance were given by Donna Hayes from a letter written by Patricia Haywood Nutt.
In attendance were members of the church and representatives from the Knights of Columbus.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Lord.
An honor guard was formed at the cemetery by representatives from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard including 1N1 Audrey Langley and PH3 Tim Reynolds.
The American flag that draped the casket was folded by 1N1 Audrey Langley and PH3 Tim Reynolds and presented to Mr. Conway's widow, Priscilla J. (MacDonald) Conway.
Bearers were Ryan Haywood, Eric Mitchell and Tim Bond.
