Ernest A. Simpson Jr.
HAMPTON - Ernest A. Simpson Jr., 86, of 20 Taylor St., died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Seacoast Health Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 12, 1915, the son of the late Ernest A. and Elizabeth (Betts) Simpson. Mr. Simpson graduated from Hightstown High School, Hightstown, N.J., and from Duke University in Durham, N.C., in 1938.
He was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army with the 9th Armored Division as a first Lieutenant and was the recipient of the Bronze Star.
He worked as a sales representative in the auto parts industry for Curtis Industries in Ohio.
Mr. Simpson was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hampton.
He was the husband of Jules "Judy" (Boykin) Simpson for 34 years.
In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Ernest A. Simpson III, of Haverhill, Mass.; three daughters, Barbara Simpson Verns of Rochester, N.Y., Susan L. Rambeau of Winter Springs, Fla., and Martha E. McEntee of New York City, N.Y.; five grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and three nieces.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie (Craig) Simpson, and a brother, Stuart H. Simpson, who died in 1989.
SIMPSON - Ernest A. Simpson Jr., 86, of 20 Taylor Road, Hampton, died Jan. 22, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. Katherine A. MacLeod
HAMPTON - The funeral for Katherine A. MacLeod, 86, of 777 Lafayette Road, Hampton, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.
The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Catherine Harake and Angus MacLeod offered the readings. Richard and Tracie Sullivan presented the gifts at the altar. William C. MacLeod offered words of remembrance. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Fr. Ham. Pallbearers were Jason Cordon, Thomas Chamberlain, Angus MacLeod and Alex Winston. Scottish laments were offered at the cemetery by bagpiper Donald Matheson.
Clarence J. "Joe" Young
PORTSMOUTH - Clarence J. "Joe" Young, 65, widower of Theresa D. (Haynes) Young, of 117 Holly Lane, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at his home.
He was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Aug. 30, 1935, the son of the late Bertha and Richard Young.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1962, as a communications specialist with the rank of sergeant.
He worked for the City of Portsmouth from 1965 in the Water Department as a meter reader; he lso as employed in the Sewer Department at the waste water treatment plant, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of 1386 AFSME. He was a retired member of the Portsmouth Call Fire Department, with more than 17 years of service, retiring as a captain.
He was a former member HHB 31197 FA, serving as radio teletype section chief; a former member of the New Castle Fire Department; a member of the Frank E. Booma Post 6 American Legion; and a former member of Portsmouth Auxiliary Police from 1965-1973.
He was active in Boy Scouts of America for many years with Troop 275, and a member of Mic-O-Say BSA.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas D. Young and wife Judy of Palmyra, Pa., Joseph H. Young and fiancee Sue of Holly Hill, Fla., and Robert M. Young of Portsmouth; one daughter, Melissa A. Scott and husband John Scott of Orange City, Fla.; four grandchildren, Kassandra L. Young and Todd M. Young both of Portsmouth, Krista A. (Young) Scott, and Nicholas J. Chesley, both of Orange City, Fla.
YOUNG - Clarence J. "Joe" Young, 65, of 117 Holly Lane, Portsmouth, died Jan. 22, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Thomas C. "Tom" Gouin
PORTSMOUTH - Thomas C. "Tom" Gouin, 48, husband of Kim A. (McDonald) Gouin of 157 Richards Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at his home. He was born in Northbridge, Mass., on April 6, 1952, the son of Bertha R. (Girouard) Gouin of North Uxbridge, Mass., and the late Louis A. Gouin.
He was employed for 23 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist foreman in Shop 31.
He was an active member and past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 97 in Portsmouth; a volunteer for Pro Portsmouth for many years; and was active with the Instructional Baseball League for the Portsmouth Recreation Department.
Tom was a fun-loving person who enjoyed life, camping and hiking.
Besides his wife of 25 years and his mother, of North Uxbridge, Mass., survivors include, a son Seth T. Gouin of Portsmouth; two daughters, Amanda K. Gouin of Boston, Mass., and Joshelyn M. Gouin of Portsmouth; two sisters, Judith Curran of North Kinsgstown, R.I., and Linda Maslanka of Warwick, R.I.; three brothers, Robert D. Gouin of Forest, Va., Jack J.A. Gouin of East Calais, Vt., and Kevin W. Gouin of Hollywood, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
A brother, Paul Gouin, predeceased him in 1996.

Eleanor Sexton Rogers
RYE - Eleanor Sexton Rogers, 80, of Rye, died peacefully Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, following a series of heart failures after a stroke she suffered in spring of 1999.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of Lawrence and Emma (Mantz) Donahue.
She joined the WACs in 1942 and worked as a telegraph operator in air traffic control in Fort Knox, Ky., where she met and married Lt. John F. Sexton, also serving in the Army Air Corps. Together they lived in various parts of the United States and abroad, France and Okinawa. They had five children.
Widowed at 36, she purchased the summer home of her sister-in-law and moved to Rye, where she raised five children. A single mother, she supported the family by working at home for organizations such as Harris Polls, doing political surveys, and selling Avon and the World Book. Active in the Democratic Women's Club, she was also an avid seamstress and had pleasure in making quilts as well as dresses for her daughters.
A child of the Depression, she took great pride in returning to school as an adult to complete her high school diploma in her 50s. She is a graduate of Portsmouth High School.
She married Alfred Rogers in 1982, who passed away in October 1998.
Survivors include her five children: Cindy Sexton Lewis and husband, John, of Durham, Eleanor Sexton of Durham, John Sexton and his wife, Jackie, of Rye, Elaine Sexton of New York, and William Sexton of Rye; five grandchildren, Michael, David and Madeline Sexton Lewis, Anne Sexton and Jennifer Sexton; and her "adopted" daughter, Maureen Baldwin.

Robert S. Roberge
GREENLAND - Robert S. Roberge, 64, the husband of Barbara (Reed) Roberge of 304 Post Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at his home.
Born in Saco, Maine, on Feb. 8, 1936, he was the son of the late Ernest and Josephine (Krajewski) Roberge.
He was a graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine, Class of 1953. He served in the United States Army Reserves.
He was formerly employed as a manager for Diamond National Building Material Co., as a sales representative for Bostitch - division of Textron, and prior to his retirement was employed as a toll collector for the New Hampshire Turnpike Authority.
Besides his wife of more than 40 years, survivors include his siblings, Pauline Weiss of Center Harbor, N.H.; Ernest Roberge Jr. of North Waterboro, Maine; and Mary Lou Connolly of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, Francis Roberge, predeceased him.
ROBERGE - Robert S. Roberge, 64, of 304 Post Road, Greenland, died Jan. 23, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Church, 9 Lincoln St., Exeter. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with wake services at 6 p.m. Family flowers only. Charlotte P. Carmel
FARMINGTON - Funeral services for Charlotte P. Carmel, 76, of 71 North Main St., were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Wednesday. The Rev. Will Saunders, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church), officiated.
In attendance were representatives from the First Newmarket Colonial Militia Company.
Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, Maine, in the spring.
Nathaniel Coleman
KITTERY - Funeral services for Nathaniel Coleman, who died Jan. 22, 2001, were held Wednesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery. The retired rector George Allen, formerly of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, officiated.
Members of both the Masonic Naval Lodge No. 184 and St. John's Lodge No. 1 of Portsmouth, along with the Royal Arch Chapter No. 73 of Kittery, conducted a combined Masonic service at the funeral home. Those participating were: Worshipful Master: George McLean; Chaplain: Alfred Hope; Marshal: Robert A. Spinney; Tyler: George Seward; Worshipful Grand Organist: John Moulton; along with Masonic Brothers Mark Sousa and Walter Wheeler, all representing the Kittery Naval Lodge No. 184.
Also, Past Master: Donald Stevens; Past Master: Harold Crossman; and Past Master: Calvin Wilder, representing the St. John's Lodge No. 1 of Portsmouth. Donald P. Coates, past master of St. John's Lodge No. 51 of South Berwick and representative of the Royal Arch Chapter No. 73 of Kittery, also participated in the service. Staff Sgt. Lee Jackson of the U.S. Army Recruiting Station presented the American flag to Mr. Coleman's wife, Dorothy. A small reception for friends and family followed at Warren's Restaurant in Kittery.
A spring burial will occur in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery.

Donna Esmay Lord
NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. - Donna Esmay Lord, 84, of New Hartford, N.Y. died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001.
She was born June 4, 1916, in Ilion, the daughter of the late Wallace and Isabelle Steber Esmay. She graduated from the Utica Free Academy in 1934 and worked as a stenographer for the Utica Duxbak Corp.
In 1938, she married Clarence J. Cackett and together they owned and operated the Souter & Cackett Insurance Agency in New Hartford until his death in 1971.
On April 26, 1974, she married Lewis K. Lord, and in retirement they enjoyed traveling throughout the country as well as South America and Greece. She also enjoyed volunteering for the American Heart Association, Multiple Sclerosis Association, and for the English as a Second Language program.
She was a member of the Calvary Church in Utica.
Besides her husband Lew, survivors include two sisters, Evelyn E. Tudhope of Waterville and Grace E. Page of Albany; two sisters-in-law, Erma Lord Orcutt of South Glens-Falls and Teresa Cackett; a brother-in-law, Francis Holland; her children, James and Brenda Cackett of Batavia, Robert and Judy Cackett of Guayacil, Ecuador, Thomas Cackett of Washington, D.C., and Philip E. Cackett of Ocala, Fla.; two stepchildren and their spouses, Thomas and Susan Lord Tyksinski of Golden, Colo., and Stephen and Cheri Mace Lord of Portsmouth, N.H.; and grandchildren, Jackie, Rebecca, Robert, Kasandra, Christopher and Marika Cackett, and Justin and Jarrod Lord.
Patricia R. Morgan
HAMPTON - Patricia R. Morgan, 78, formerly of Tuttle Avenue, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Webster at Rye Health and Retirement.
Born in Cambridge, Mass., March 17, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Harriet (Wilde) Reynolds.
She was a graduate of Emmanuel College in Boston and worked as a real estate agent in Andover, Mass., and for the Dunfey family in Hampton.
She resided in Andover, Mass., from 1955 to 1970 and was a longtime summer resident of Hampton, moving here in 1970. After moving to Hampton she spent her winters in St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands until 1998.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and was a charter member of the Abenaqui Country Club, Rye Beach.
She was the wife of the late Robert L. Morgan, who died in 1993, and was predeceased by a brother, Joseph, and a sister, Mary.
Family members include three sons, Robert L. "Duffy" Morgan Jr. and his wife, Patsy, of Hampton, C. Gary Morgan of New York, N.Y., and Jeffrey J. Morgan and his wife, Lynn, of South Norwalk, Conn.; five grandchildren, Robert, Kristin, Ryan, Benton and Clark; two brothers, Hugh Reynolds of New Jersey and Robert Reynolds of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
MORGAN - Patricia R. Morgan, 78, formerly of Tuttle Avenue, Hampton, died Jan. 23, 2001.
