Herbert L. Whitehouse
ORLANDO, Fla. - Herbert L. Whitehouse, 81, of Rivers Pointe Drive, Orlando, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, of respiratory failure.
He was born in Portsmouth, N.H.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he moved to central Florida in 1971. He worked as a salesman. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 270, both in Port Orange.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor E. Whitehouse of Orlando; a son, Charles T. Whitehouse of Stanford, Conn.; two daughters, Susan J. Monaham of Tampa, and Sally A. Egli of Orlando; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Margaret A. Reilly
HAMPTON - The funeral for Margaret A. Reilly, 70, of 753 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, was held Wednesday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.
Altar servers were Bernard Auguin, Francis Ryan and Robert Langlois. Julia M. Reilly, daughter of Mrs. Reilly, placed the pall over the casket and recited poems that were written by her mother. Sister Mary Joan Walsh offered the readings. Amy and Brittany Lessard presented the gifts to the altar. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Ham. Pallbearers were Julia M. Reilly, Kevin Ness, Bryce Bunner, Edward Wakeen, Joshua Dickey and Gerard Lavallee.
Tyler Michael Eaton
SEABROOK - Largely attended services for Tyler Michael Eaton, infant son of Amy E. Wasson and Chris M. Eaton, were held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hampton, officiated. Burial followed in the Wildwood Cemetery, Seabrook, with committal services by the Rev. Moore.
Pallbearers were Austin Eaton, Keith Eaton, Herbert Randall Jr., Jeremy Wasson and John Wasson.
Marjorie V. Lord
HAMPTON - The funeral for Marjorie V. Lord, 71, formerly of 78 Dearborn Ave., was held Tuesday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in the Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass., with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Knowlton.
Marian F. Ham
RYE - Marian F. Ham, 66, of 60 Garland Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at her home.
She was born in Portsmouth on Jan. 7, 1935, the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Evelyn Olivia (Farrell) Ham.
She was a very loving and caring person who enjoyed gardening, working with animals and helping people.
Survivors include her children, Mark W. Bateman of Epping, Bruce C. Bateman of Dover, and Robin H. Heim and her husband, David R., of Exeter; a granddaughter, Heather Heim of Exeter; a sister, Hazel H. Hughes of Rye; a brother, Ronald S. Coker of Rochester; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin, William Mallory of Portsmouth.
A brother, James Ham, predeceased her.
HAM - Marian F. Ham, 66, of 60 Garland Road, Rye, died Jan. 17, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Flowers will be accepted.
Libby Fisher Ginsburg
PORTSMOUTH - Libby Fisher Ginsburg, a resident of the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, died Jan. 18, 2001, after a brief illness. She was 92.
Mrs. Ginsburg moved to the Edgewood Centre in 1993 from Stamford, Conn., where she had resided since 1964. She earned a master's degree in library science from Columbia University in 1965, at the age of 57, and served at the Stamford Public Library for more than two decades.
Failing health caused Mrs. Ginsburg to move from Connecticut to Portsmouth in order to be near her son, Philip E. Ginsburg, of Durham. Mr. Ginsburg, a writer, is the former director of the N.H. Humanities Council and a former faculty member of the University of New Hampshire.
Mrs. Ginsburg, the daughter of Jennie and Samuel Fisher of San Francisco, was a resident of Scarsdale, N.Y., before moving to Connecticut. She was the wife of Aaron Ginsburg, a principal of Aaron Ashley Inc., a well-known publisher of fine art reproductions. Mr. Ginsburg died in 1977.
Mrs. Ginsburg is survived by her son, of Durham; her sister, Sandy Buzen, of Great Neck, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Adam of Middlebury, Vt., Matthew of Boston, and Sonia of Durham; and one great grandchild, Eden Rose Ginsburg, of Middlebury, who was born in October 2000.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road (Route 4), in Lee, with the Rabbi Lev Ba'esh of Temple Israel of Dover officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at the Durham Cemetery.
Katherine A. MacLeod
HAMPTON - Katherine A. MacLeod, 86, of 777 Lafayette Road, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at her residence at the Partridge House.
Born in Inverness, (Cape Breton) Nova Scotia, Canada, March 7, 1914, she was the youngest daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Gillis) MacDougall.
Her deceased sisters and brothers include Mary Ann, Mary Sarah, Colin, Angus and Alexander. She had on living stepsister, Ann MacDougall of Nova Scotia.
She immigrated to Boston in 1930 and married John MacLeod in 1933. They were married for 51 years, having lived in Dorchester, Natick and Newton, Mass. They moved to New Hampshire in 1974 after John retired from the Boston Globe. He passed away in 1984.
The couple had seven children. Surviving sons and daughters include John A. MacLeod of Apple Valley, Minn., William C. MacLeod of Naperville, Ill., Miriam Winston of Boston, Margaret Henry of Minagra, Nicaragua, Mary Helen Corcoran of Hampton, and Bonnie Jean MacLeod of Lonetree, Colo. A daughter, Sheila, died shortly after birth in 1942.
Also surviving are 17 loving grandchildren, Tracie, Jeanette, John, Michael, David, Theodore, Alex, Jennifer, Angus, Teryl Lee, William, Christopher, Katherine, Ellen, Molly, Heather and Jason; 20 great-grandchildren; and very close nephews and nieces including Tom Chamberlain of Saugus, Mass., Alexander and Hugh MacDougall of Nova Scotia; Yvonne King of Derry, Sandra Harquail of New Brunswick, and Colina LeBlanc of Nova Scotia.
She was predeceased by two fine sons-in-law, Maynard Winston of Boston, and Paul Corcoran of Hampton.
She was considered a consultant in family studies with an honorary degree from the University of Cape Breton at Inverness, Nova Scotia. She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, neighbor and caring friend to all.
MacLEOD - Katherine A. MacLeod, of 777 Lafayette Road, Hampton, died Jan. 18, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Elizabeth Ann Joyce
PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth Ann Joyce, 80, of 140 Court St., passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Lakewood, N.Y., Feb. 8, 1920, she was the daughter of Walter and Paola (Peters) Hayward. She was a pediatric registered nurse. During World War II she worked with the Red Cross drawing blood for blood banks in Boston.
A resident of Portsmouth for the past 12 years, she volunteered with the Red Cross at the local blood banks.
The widow of William Gregory Joyce II, who died in 1983, she is survived by a daughter, Deborah Ann Norberg of Boston; two sons, William G. Joyce III of Melbourne, Fla., and Mark S. Joyce of Portsmouth; and seven grandchildren.
JOYCE - Elizabeth Ann Joyce, 80, of 140 Court St., Portsmouth, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Lakewood, N.Y. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.
Roland H. Keenan
STORRS, Conn. - Roland H. Keenan, 81, of Storrs, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the Windham Hospital in Willimantic.
Born in Melvin Village, May 12, 1919, he was the son of Henry and Amy (Merifield) Keenan and had been a resident of Connecticut for more than 40 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps. He was a member for more than 25 years of the Carpenter's Local Union No. 30, affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. He was a life member of the VFW in Willimantic.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anita (Jutras) Keenan; a daughter, Shirley Beyor and her husband Rick of Tolland; a son, Thomas Keenan and his wife Sherry of Mystic and Florida; four grandchildren, Stacey Beyor, Christopher Beyor, Tami Keenan and Kristina Keenan; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian Pollini of Wolfeboro, N.H.
KEENAN - Roland H. Keenan, 81, of Storrs, Conn., formerly of Portsmouth, died Jan. 17, 2001. A funeral service will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth on Monday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours are Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. Burial in the Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth.
James Frederic Piper Sr.
CHARLESTOWN, N.H. - James Frederic Piper Sr., 88, of Judland Heights, died at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001.
Born in Marblehead, Mass., Oct. 5, 1912, at the top of the "Old Alley Steps," he was the son of Mark and Annie (Stafford) Piper.
He was a graduate of the Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood, N.H., and attended the Essex Agriculture School in Massachusetts. He worked for the state of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, retiring in 1974.
He lived most of his life in New Hampshire and for the past several years in North Charlestown. He attended the North Charlestown Methodist Church, enjoyed crossword puzzles, small woodworking projects and especially attending his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting events.
He married Evelyn T. Piper, who survives him, on Oct. 9, 1971. He is also survived by three children, James Piper Jr., of Rye, Elizabeth Gaskell of Portsmouth, and Patricia Graves of Springfield, Vt.; five stepchildren, Patricia Robinson of Bellows Falls, Vt.; Augusta Manzanera of Boca Raton, Fla.; Barbara Clemens of Concord, N.H.; Larry Martin of Concord, N.C.; and Sharon Fish of Westmoreland, N.H.; 29 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by Phyllis W. Piper, the mother of his children; a brother, Stafford Piper; a sister, Gladys P. Blaney and a grandson, Benjamin Piper.
PIPER - James Frederic Piper Sr., 88, of Judland Heights, Charlestown, N.H., died Jan. 16, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. There will be no calling hours and burial will be held in the spring in the Northwood Ridge Cemetery, Northwood, N.H. Teresa E. Dawley
RYE - Teresa E. Dawley, 81, of 141 Wallis Road, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at Webster at Rye Nursing Home after a period of failing health.
Born in Portsmouth, Feb. 24, 1919, she was the adoptive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Burkhardt and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth and Rye.
She was a member of St. Theresa Church, the Rye Over 55 Club, and the Third Friday Club. She enjoyed working as a baby sitter for many families in the Seacoast.
The widow of Frank L. Dawley, she is survived by two sons, David A. Dawley and his wife, Joan, of Rye, and Richard A. Dawley and his wife, Nancy, of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Christian and David Dawley of Rye and Joseph Dawley and Christa Montague of Texas. She was predeceased by an infant daughter Brenda Dawley.
Mary Ann Lucas
PORTSMOUTH - Mary Ann Lucas, 57, of 10 Decatur Road, passed away Thursday, Jan 18, 2001, after a long illness.
Born in Sharon Hill, Penn., July 22, 1943, she was the daughter of Harry and Mary (Brooks) Reed. She had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 20 years.
She was a member of St. James Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary McGee of Brentwood; three sons, Michael Lucas of Portsmouth, Steven Lucas of Richardson, Texas, and David Lucas of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Tony McGee, Heather McGee, Tyler McGee and Emily Lucas; two sisters, Patricia DiCostanzo of Holmes, Penn., and Barbara Caprice of Ocala, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
LUCAS - Mary Ann Lucas, 57, of 10 Decatur Road, died Jan. 18, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at St. James Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Mrs. Constance Marie (Colpitts) Smith
PEABODY, Mass. - Funeral service for Mrs. Constance Marie (Colpitts) Smith, 58, of 41 H. Shore Drive, was held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with services at the Advent Christian Church, Portsmouth. Rev. Russell Carle, Pastor, Rev. Willie Baston, Rev. Glenn Rice, and Rev. Warren Conary, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Michael Smith. Organist was Priscilla Marshall. Vocalist was Rev. and Mrs. Jean Squire. Pianist was Sandee Conary.
In attendance were members of the church. Bearers were Mark Tappan, Doug Tappan, Eric Hannaford, Philip Marshall, Peter Marshall, and Paul Andrews. Burial will be in the Maple Lane Cemetery Stratham, in the spring.
Mrs. Shirley Marlene (Brewster) Browning
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Marlene (Brewster) Browning, 57 of 245 Middle St., were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with memorial services at the Rye Congregational Church. Rev. John Solie, Pastor, Rye Congregational Church, and Rev. Dennis Marasco, associate Pastor, Bethany Church of Greenland, officiated. Organist was Jan Stover.
In attendance were members of the Rye Congregational Church, and former associates from Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Burial will be in the Forest Glade Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H., in the spring.
Francis Carey
HAMPTON - Francis E. Carey, 87, of 322 Winnacunnet Road, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.
He was born in Norton, Vt., on May 21, 1913, the son of the late Charles L. and Cora (Bennett) Carey.
He graduated from Canaan (Vt.) High School and Concord Business College, after which he attended the University of New Hampshire while employed full time in the athletic department.
He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1936 until his retirement in 1968 as supervisory administrative officer of the planning department. He was a member of the Naval Civilian Administrators Association.
After his retirement from the shipyard, he was employed by Tobey & Merrill Insurance Co. and also worked for several years as a supervisor for the N.H. Dept. of Transportation at the Hampton toll station.
Active in Freemasonry, he was a 50-year veteran and past master of Star in the East Lodge No. 59 F&AM Exeter, and was a dual charter member of St. James Lodge No. 102 F&AM Hampton. In 1970 and 1971 he served as district deputy grand master of the 1st Masonic district of the Grand Lodge of N.H.
He was the recipient of the Major General John Sullivan meritorious service medal and was past president and longtime director of the Exeter Masonic Association.
He also served as presiding officer of Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Portsmouth-Dover, and was made an honorary member of the Supreme Council 33rd degree at Boston in 1969.
He was a member of the N.H. Consistory Valley of Nashua, the East Gate Club of Seabrook and the Seacoast Bridge Club at the Seabrook Community Center.
He was the husband for 55 years of the late Helen (Gill) Carey, who died in 1992, and was predeceased by a son, Dr. Peter W. Carey, in 1990.
Family members include a niece, Geraldine Cross of Canaan, Vt., and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
CAREY - Francis E. Carey of 322 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, died Jan. 20, 2001. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
