John George Soteros
PORTSMOUTH - John George Soteros, 83, the husband of Mildred S. (Pappas) Soteros of 928 South St., died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
Born on April 2, 1917, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late George and Katheryne I. (Roylos) Soteros.
He owned and operated John's Neighborhood Store. He also worked for Hannaford Brothers and prior to his retirement in 1980 was employed for the N.H. State Liquor Commission.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, where he served as secretary and was a member of the Church Council. He was also a member of A.H.E.P.A.
As one of Portsmouth's greatest generations, his love of family, church, community, work and friendship was his life.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Nicholas J. Soteros and his fiancée, Beverly Rider, of Wells, Maine; and George J. Soteros and his wife, Rowena, of Port Washington, Long Island, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Catherine Soteros of Port Washington, Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Toula Goutas of South Yarmouth, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Two sisters, Mary Theophilos and Christine Soteros, predeceased him.
Beverly J. Brown
SEABROOK - Beverly J. Brown, 62, of 113 Cimarron Drive, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born on July 13, 1938, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of the late Douglas and Conchetta (DiJulia) Munroe, and resided in Seabrook for nearly 40 years.
she worked several years as a stitcher for the former Barr & Bloomfield Shoe Co.
In 1992, she was predeceased by her son, Mark D. Brown, and her brother, Douglas C. "Sonny" Munroe.
Family members include her son Douglas L. Brown Jr. of Rochester; three daughters, Catherine L. Brown and Rhonda L. Brown, both of Exeter, and Whonda D. Wolterbeek of Hampton; two grandchildren; three brothers, Donald Munroe of Tucson, Ariz., Richard Munroe of Newton, and Robert Munroe of Rochester; a sister, Claire Smith of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.
BROWN - Beverly J. Brown, 62, of 113 Cimarron Drive, Seabrook, died Jan. 12, 2001. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service. Following cremation, interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. Marjorie V. Lord
HAMPTON - Marjorie V. Lord, 71, formerly of 78 Dearborn Ave., died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.
Born Dec. 4, 1929, in Amesbury, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Leeland and Margaret (Dearborn) Lord. She attended Amesbury schools until the family moved to Hampton, and she was a graduate of Hampton Academy. She later attended the Lynn, Mass., branch of Burdett College.
She worked as a bookkeeper for School Administrative Unit 21 in Hampton for 16 years and also at the Rockingham County Nursing Home for 14 years.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church and its Women's Guild. She was also a volunteer at the Rockingham Nursing Home.
Family members include several cousins.
LORD - Marjorie V. Lord, 71, formerly of 78 Dearborn Ave., Hampton, died Jan. 12, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass. Lucille B. Anderson
ROCHESTER - Lucille B. Anderson, 79, died on Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at home, surrounded by her family, after a 25-year battle with cancer.
Born on Dec. 24, 1921, in Lynn, Mass., she was the daughter of Arthur J. and Gladys (Chateauneuf) Bourque. She grew up in Lynn, attending St. Jean's School. She graduated from St. Anne's Academy in Marlboro, Mass., attended Emmanuel College and earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Spring Hill College in Spring Hill, Ala., in 1944. She later earned her masters of education degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1985.
She was an English teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, teaching at the school for 24 years. After her retirement in 1994, she served on the St. Thomas Aquinas High School Advisory Board. In 1998, the St. Thomas Aquinas faculty established annual scholarships in her name. From the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, she was a scorer of advanced placement English exams in Princeton, N.J. She was active in St. Mary's parish in Rochester for 46 years.
Survivors include her husband of almost 58 years, Jo Anderson; three sons, Jo Anderson Jr., of Chicago, William Anderson, of Meredith, and David Anderson, of Boston, Mass.; four daughters, Marcia Werner, of Wayland, Mass., Mary Beth Goldblatt, of Fort Montgomery, N.Y., Paula Glynn, of Dover, and Karen Anderson of Boston, Mass.; a brother, Arthur J. Bourque Jr., of Lynnfield, Mass., and his five children, Arthur III, Denis, Elizabeth, Anne and Barbara; two stepbrothers, Tom LeBlanc, of New Brunswick, Canada, and Francis LeBlanc, of Marion, Mass.; a stepsister, Charline Urista, of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Lorraine and Josh Anderson, of Chicago, Jennifer and Brad Anderson, of Meredith, Matthew and Amy Werner, of Wayland, Mass., Alison Goldblatt, of Fort Montgomery, N.Y., and James, Christopher, Meghan and Peter Glynn, of Dover; and several step- and great nieces and nephews.
ANDERSON - Lucille B. Anderson, 79, of Rochester, died on Jan. 12, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Edgerley's Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at St. Mary's Church, 38 Charles St., in Rochester. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Thomas Aquinas High School, 197 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820.
Elizabeth Hunt Ellis
EXETER - Elizabeth Hunt Ellis, 84, of Langdon Place, formerly of North Hampton, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.
She was born in Glendive, Mont., on May 26, 1916, the daughter of the late Ralph L. and Sarah (McCullough) Hunt.
She was a graduate of Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, with the class of 1933, and of Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, in 1937; she did graduate work at the University of Maine and Boston University.
She was active for many years in the field of education. She taught English and history in the schools of Maine and in the American School at Wheelus Air Force Base in Libya, North Africa, before retiring in 1969 from 12 years of teaching at Hampton Academy Jr. High School.
She was active in the Seacoast Teachers' Association, The Winnacunnet Scholarship Grant Fund and served on various committees at the Exeter Country Club, where she was a playing member in the ACBL Bridge Club.
She moved to Exeter in 1998 from Hampton, where she had lived for 30 years.
She was the wife of the late Carl C. Ellis, who died in 1997.
Family members include two daughters, Susan Halliday Smith, of North Hampton, and Sally H. Halvorsen, of Bethlehem; and three grandchildren, Christopher Smith, of Atlanta, Ga., Jennifer Brooks, of Denver, Colo., and Ralph "Jeff" Brooks, of Manchester.
ELLIS - Elizabeth H. Ellis, of Langdon Place, Exeter, formerly of North Hampton, died on Jan. 11, 2001. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2001. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Margaret A. Reilly
HAMPTON - Margaret A. Reilly, 70, of 753 Ocean Blvd., died Sunday, January 14, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare.
She was born in New York on Oct. 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (O'Donnell) McDermott.
She was raised in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston and was a 1960 graduate of Regis College in Weston, Mass., receiving her bachelor's degree in psychology and education. She did her graduate work at The Botolph School, Boston, Mass., where she received her elementary school art degree.
She was a novitiate at the Framingham, Mass., Sisters of St. Joseph and for 18 years as an educator, and assigned as Sister Kathleen Mary, she served the Diocese of Boston. As a Sister of St. Joseph's Educational Community in Boston, she taught grades 2-8 at St. John's and St. James schools in Swampscott, Our Lady School in Chelsea, St. Matthew's School, Boston, and the Kennedy Public School in Brockton.
She later served as the assistant principal as well as a teacher for grades 4-8 at Sacred Heart School in Hampton from 1981 to 1991.
She has resided in Hampton since 1973 and most recently was co-owner with her daughter, Julia M. Reilly, of Mary Margaret Greenhouses in North Hampton.
She was an active communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish and was a member of many religious organizations.
She was the wife of the late Richard M. Reilly, who died in 1985, with whom she worked as a consultant for Rand McNally and Co. in the educational division.
In addition to her daughter, of Hampton, family members include one sister, Kathleen Beatty, of Natick, Mass., and many nieces and nephews.
REILLY - Margaret A. Reilly, of 753 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, died Jan. 14, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
Elizabeth M. Dowaliby
DOVER - Elizabeth M. Dowaliby, 86, of 493 Tolend Road, passed away on Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, after a period of failing health.
Born in Drew Plantation, Maine, on March 9, 1914, she was the daughter of Alvra and Rachael (Hewey) Butters.
She lived with her loving husband, George, at 52 Belknap St., Dover, until his death on Jan. 5, 1995.
The most important thing in her whole life was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She lived by, and taught her children to live by the "Golden Rule." She would do anything for anybody and was loved by all that were fortunate to have known her.
Besides her caring for many children throughout the years, she had been employed at Textron Davidson Interiors for 14 years.
She resided at Riverside Rest Home during her final years where she received excellent loving care and attention from the staff of Unit 1A.
Survivors include four sons, Clifford Young of Wagontown, Pa.; Robert L. Dowaliby, Warren F. Dowaliby, and George E. Dowaliby, all of Dover, N.H.; two daughters, Gay A. Bayer of San Jose, Calif.; and Donna M. Hayes of Strafford, N.H.; one brother, Robert Butters of Lincoln, Maine; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
DOWALIBY - Elizabeth M. Dowaliby, 86, of 493 Tolend Road, Dover, passed away on Jan. 15, 2001. Friends may call at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Church, Central Avenue, Dover. Burial will be in the family lot in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 North Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill. 60611-1676, Attn: Donation Department for Research.
John George Soteros
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for John George Soteros, 83, of 928 South St., were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with services at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth. Presbyter Angelo Pappas was celebrant. Cantor was Jim Maheras and readings were given by James Geminatas.
In attendance were members of the church; representatives from A.H.E.P.A. and the Church Council.
Bearers were Nicholas Soteros, George Soteros, James Geminatis, G. Spiro Mouflouze, James Lilakos and Peter Coussoule.
Burial will be in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth in the spring.
Wake services were held Monday evening at the J.Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel by Fr. Angelo Pappas.
A.H.E.P.A. services were also held Monday evening by Bill Naumes, John Petroulis, Ron Currier, Christos Perakis, John Panteleos, Nick Minichello, Thanasis Tournas, Michael Geanoulis and Kostas Marevelis.
Florence A. Coughlin
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Florence A. Coughlin, 98, of 263 Rockland St., Portsmouth, were held Jan. 2, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Edward Kelley. Lector was Eileen Foley, who also read the poem "Good Night and Good Morning." Organist was Marion Arnoldy.
In attendance was a large delegation from the Portsmouth Housing Authority, Senior Center, and RSVP. The Knights of Columbus Auxiliary formed an honor guard at the church. Amy McIntyre of the Children's Museum, made a presentation of the First Annual Florence Coughlin Outstanding Service Award. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery with Father Kelley conducting the committal prayers.
Leonie H. Park
YORK, Maine - Leonie H. "Lonnie" Park, 76, of 90 Scotland Bridge Road, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at her residence, after a long illness.
Born on May 26, 1924, in Brookline, Mass., she was the daughter of Henry Jr. and Minnie (Cooley) Heuer. She was a 1942 graduate of Needham, Mass. High School and a 1944 graduate of Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., receiving a degree in merchandising and creative writing.
She had been the executive secretary of fund-raising and public relations at the Columbus, Ohio Zoological Park Association, from 1971 to 1976.
She had formerly resided in Rochester, N.Y. before moving to York in 1988.
She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and was an avid gardener.
Survivors include her husband, Jim Park, of York; two daughters, Debora L. Dietz of Lawrence, Kan.; and Lynne D. Palmiere of Pittsford, N.Y.; two stepsons, Christopher W. Park of New York and Kenneth W. Park of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Betty L. Boutilier of Stratham; and six grandchildren.
PARK - Leonie H. "Lonnie" Park, 76, of 90 Scotland Bridge Road, York, Maine, died Jan. 15, 2001. Private services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.
Albert Gorman
DOVER - Albert "Al" Gorman, 74, of Winston Avenue, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at his home, surrounded by his family. He bravely fought cancer for over two years. Born in Sanford, Maine, on Jan. 3, 1927, he was the son of Michael and Mathilda (Tanguay) Gorman.
He was a veteran of 20 years in the United States Army. He served in Germany after World War II and received the German Occupation Medal. While in Korea, he received the Korean Service Medal with three battle stars. In Vietnam, he received the Vietnam Service Medal with three campaign stars, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Presidential Unit Commendation Citation and the Bronze Star. He retired in 1970. In 1979, he graduated from Nathaniel Hawthorn College in Antrim, with a bachelor of arts degree.
After retiring, he worked at Simplex in North Berwick, and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a woodworker in the supply department. After retiring from the Navy yard, he worked at the New Hampshire State Liquor Store at the traffic circle in Portsmouth.
He was a communicant of St. Charles Church in Dover. He was an avid reader, and loved to bowl. He bowled in many leagues in Newmarket and Dover. A great source of pride for him was his family.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jo-Ann (Vir) Gorman; three daughters, Kathleen and her husband, Paul Bennett, of Brentwood, N.H.; Karen and her husband, Brian Stewart, of Rochester, N.H.; and Dr. Kimberly and her husband, Dr. Paul Coolidge, of St. Louis, Mo.; two granddaughters, Ciara and Tianna Stewart, whom he loved very much; a brother, James Gorman and his wife, Virginia, of Somersworth, N.H.; two sisters, Gladys and her husband, John Touchette, of Sanford, Maine; and Gertrude Tumblin of Lebanon, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. He loved his cats, Sabrina, Kippi and Kobie, who will miss him very much.
He will be sadly and lovingly remembered and missed by his family.
GORMAN - Albert "Al" Gorman, 74, of Winston Avenue, Dover, died Jan. 12, 2001. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Charles Church, Central Avenue, Dover. Full military honors will be accorded at the church. Burial will be at a later date in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Sanford, Maine.
