Sarah Jeannette Sterry
PORTSMOUTH - Sarah Jeannette Sterry, 93, of 108 Meadow Road, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at her home.
Born Nov. 10, 1907, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Arthur and Suzy (Littlefield) Randall and was a lifelong resident of the city.
She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church.
The widow of John Frank Sterry, she is survived by three sons, Arthur Sterry and his wife, Pauline, of Coral Springs, Fla.; Paul Sterry and his wife, Charmaine, of Kenmore, N.Y.; and Frank B. Sterry of Portsmouth; two daughters, Mary Weaver and her husband, Phillip, of Shawnee, Kan.; and Pauline Centrella and her husband, Frank, of Somerville, Mass.; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, William Sterry; a brother, Judson Randall; a sister, Arlene Randall; and a half-brother, Jack Beesley.
STERRY - Sarah J. Sterry, 93, of 108 Meadow Road, Portsmouth, died Dec. 28, 2000. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine Church. Melvinea Colby
NORTH HAMPTON - Mrs. Melvinea (Webb) Colby, 85, of 140 Mill Road, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare.
She was born July 5, 1915, in Summer Shade, Ky., the daughter of the late William and Amanda Elizabeth (Crabtree) Webb. She was a resident of Greenland from 1980 to 1995 and of North Hampton from 1995 to 1999.
She was formerly employed at the Odd Fellows Home in Concord.
She was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church and the Women's Alliance of the church; lifetime member of the Greenland Historical Society; member of Pomona Grange No. 1, Oceanside Grange, and the State Grange.
She was the wife of the late Robert Wilson Colby, who died in 1957.
Survivors include five children, Elizabeth Fletcher of Warner, Robert Colby of Raymond, Richard Colby of Gorham, Maine, Esther Hinz of Concord, and Edward Colby of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Amon Webb of LaPorte, Ind., and Lyle Webb of Newfields; one sister, June Glover of Fremont; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and longtime friend Arthur Todd of North Hampton.
She was predeceased by her daughter Linda Colby Shibles in 1980.
COLBY - Mrs. Melvinea (Webb) Colby, 85, of 140 Mill Road, North Hampton, died Dec. 29, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Greenland Community Congregational Church, 2 Post Road, Greenland. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Florence A. Coughlin
PORTSMOUTH - Florence A. Coughlin, 98, of 263 Rockland St., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Langdon Place of Dover.
Born Oct. 4, 1902, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Hopkins) Coughlin and was a lifelong resident of the city.
She was employed for many years at the former W.T. Grant Department Store and the L.V. Regan Moving Co.
She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
In her retirement, she was tireless volunteer, receiving an award of Volunteer of the Year from Gov. John Sununu in 1986. She volunteered at the Portsmouth Children's Museum for 16 years and was just announced as the first recipient of the Florence Coughlin Outstanding Service Award.
Active with the RSVP, she helped for thousands of hours at the Portsmouth Senior Center, Portsmouth Probation Department, Community Council of Senior Citizens, Seacoast Council on Tourism, Odiorne Point Nature Center, Chamber of Commerce, Portsmouth Community Foundation, N.H. Legal Assistance, Area Homemaker-Health Aide, New Franklin School, Portsmouth Visiting Nurses, Salvation Army, School for Lifelong Learning, AARP, Meals on Wheels, and Bingo for Rotary.
She is survived by her sister, Alice Coughlin of Portsmouth; nieces Kathleen Kennedy, Jeanne Haley, Louise Caverly, Ann Rutledge and Mary Ann Lambros; nephew Timothy Francois; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Patrick, James and John Coughlin; and four sisters, Ellen Hogan, Mary Rutledge, Dorothy Jacobs and Catherine Kennedy.
COUGHLIN - Florence A. Coughlin, 98, of 263 Rockland St., Portsmouth, died Dec. 28, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Evelyn H. Clark
HAMPTON - , 76, of Hampton died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center after a long illness.
She was born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Methuen, Mass., the daughter of Eva and Frank Duemling. She was a graduate of Searles High School and the widow of Matthew T. Clark, who passed away in 1958.
She worked for the A&P supermarkets for 22 years, retiring in 1987. She was a 50-year member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton, and a member of the Congregational Church Women's Guild, the Hampton Garden Club and the Hampton Senior Citizens Club.
She also volunteered at the Seacoast Health Center and enjoyed helping others. She will be remembered for her many acts of kindness in the community.
Members of her family include one daughter, Carol A. Blain and her husband, Stephen, of Barrington; one son, Matthew W. Clark of Hampton; a sister, Betty A. Albis and her husband, Leonard, of Salem; four grandchildren, Jonathan Blain of Barrington, Christopher Blain of Johnson City, N.Y., and Leslie and Matthew Clark of Hampton; and a niece and nephew.
CLARK - Evelyn H. Clark, 76, of Hampton, died Dec. 31, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the First Congregational Church in Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Hampton.
Nancy Jane Goss
KITTERY, Maine - Nancy Jane Goss, 94, formerly of 5 Rice Ave., died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, after a period of failing health.
Born on April 1, 1906, in Nobleboro, she was the daughter of Samuel and Margaret Hall Goss and attended local schools. She furthered her education at Gorham Normal School, later teaching math for the Bath school system.
She was married in August 1931 to her husband of more than 30 years, John F. Coombs, and settled in Kittery in 1935. She and her husband raised their family in Kittery.
She was married to John Goss in 1970.
She was active in a number of community programs. She was a sewing leader for the Maine State Extension, teaching many young women how to sew; a past regent of the DAR; and held a number of offices in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Association.
As a member of the Second Christian Congregational Church of Kittery, she was a Sunday school teacher.
Remembered as a wonderful mother of her generation, she could see, cook and make many of the items used daily around the house and truly enjoyed it.
She was predeceased by her husband John F. Coombs in 1963; and her husband John Goss.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan and Kenneth McNabb of Kittery, and Jane Packard of Eliot; two grandsons; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Avis Keene, and her brother, Ansel Creamer.
GOSS - Nancy J. Goss, 94, formerly of 5 Rice Ave., Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 30, 2000. A private service will be held at Orchard Grove Cemetery in the spring. Services are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.
Irene R. Seger
PORTSMOUTH - Irene R. (Vachon) Seger, 76, wife of Lawrence S. Seger, of 20 Islington St., died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born on May 4, 1924, in Somersworth, the daughter of the late George and Florida Vachon.
Besides her husband, survivors include a brother, Val Vachon of Rochester; three sisters, Leah Grady of Somersworth, Pauline Bergeron of Ashland, and Patricia Corbin of Concord; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son.
Annie B. Adams
KITTERY POINT, Maine - Annie B. (Spinney) Adams, 94, a lifelong resident of Kittery Point, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.
She was born Nov. 5, 1906, in Kittery Point, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William and Fannie (Brooks) Spinney. She grew up in the Kittery Point area and attended local schools.
In 1925 she married Edward P. Adams Sr. and remained in the Kittery Point area. He predeceased her in December 1986.
She and her late husband owned and operated several camps in the Oquossoc area, which they rented out to hunters, fishermen and vacationers. They enjoyed staying at their own Camp Eden in Oquossoc.
In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting mittens, making hundreds of them each year and donating them to area churches to be given to the needy at the holidays. she also loved to cook and bake.
Survivors include a son, Edward P. Adams Jr. and his wife, Joline, of Kittery Point; two sisters, Ellen Jane Witham of Kittery Point, and Lottie Bush of Pittsfield; two beloved grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Spinney.
ADAMS— Annie B. (Spinney) Adams of Kittery Point, Maine, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, with the Rev. Duane Kellogg, pastor of the First Christian Church of Kittery Point, officiating. There will be no visitation hours and a graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in First Parish Cemetery, York, Maine.
Norma Hutchinson Gifford
DURHAM - Norma Hutchinson Gifford, 89, of Durham, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
The daughter of the late Edward and Lillian Bray Hutchinson, she was born on Little Deer Isle, Maine. She graduated from Rockland (Maine) High School and Burdett College in Lynn, Mass.
Before retirement she was an executive secretary at the University of New Hampshire. She was married to the late John R. Gifford, former principal of the Pembroke (Mass.) High School and a teacher and counselor at Portsmouth High School. They lived for more than 35 years on their beloved farm in Stratham before moving to Durham.
She is survived by her three children, Dale G. Scott of Wareham, Mass.; Dianne G. Monahan of New Durham; and John H. Gifford of Annapolis, Md.; and their spouses, Robert D. Scott, Daniel H. Monahan and Paula P. Gifford; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with whom she was very close and dearly loved.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2001, in the chapel of the Community Church of Durham, Main Street. James D. Hamilton
HAMPTON - James D. Hamilton, 66, of 15 Hackett Lane, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born April 20, 1934, in Morgan City, La., the son of the late Joseph DeVance and Nellie (Sessions) Hamilton.
He was employed for more than 30 years in circulation management at several newspapers across the country, most notably the Baltimore Sun. He served in the U.S. Army Security Agency at Ft. Devens, Mass., from 1956 to 1959.
He was a member of the Faith Community Church and St. James Lodge No. 102 F&AM; served on both the Hampton and Hudson budget committees; was a past president of the former Hampton Kiwanis Club; was a former member of the Hampton Lions Club; and, at one time, was a volunteer firefighter in Hudson.
He was the husband for 43 years of Florence R. (Vickery) Hamilton, whom he met while stationed at Ft Devens.
In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, Donald E. Hamilton and his wife, Linda, of Springvale, Maine; and Brian K. Hamilton and his wife, Janet, of Berwick, Maine; three daughters, Erin K. Hutchings of Kittery, Maine; Vicki L. Johns and her husband, Dee, and Kerri E. Hilton, all of Hampton; nine grandchildren, Eric, Kym, Chris, Mathew, Jonathan, Jennifer, Andrea, Crystal and David; one brother, Thomas D. Hamilton and his wife, Lena, of Morgan City, La.; one sister, Elizabeth Thompson of Gretna, La.; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Bruce Hutchings, and brother-in-law, Cameron Thompson.
HAMILTON - James D. Hamilton, 66, of 15 Hackett Lane, Hampton, died Dec. 30, 2000. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Masonic service at 6:45 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Albert H. Jones Sr.
MADBURY - Albert H. Jones Sr., 83, formerly of Hayes Road, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Riverside Rest Home, Dover, where he had resided for the past three years.
Born Feb. 26, 1917, in Durham, he was the son of Henry and Eulie (Danforth) Jones. Raised in Durham, he lived in Madbury from 1979 to 1996.
During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps.
He was a construction foreman and was last employed with Midway Excavating in South Hampton.
He was the husband of the late Florence (Burrows) Jones, who died in 1993.
Survivors include three sons, Albert Jones Jr. of Huntsville, Ala., Richard Jones of Murphy, N.C., and Gregory Jones of Stratham; two daughters, Sharon Coughlin of Center Barnstead, and Sheila Fernald of Madbury; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
JONES - Albert H. Jones Sr., 83, formerly of Hayes Road, Madbury, died Dec. 31, 2000. A visiting hour will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, followed by a 2 p.m. funeral service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in the Durham Cemetery. Family flowers only.
