John R. Stein
RYE - John R. Stein, 71, of Adams Trailer Place, died Sunday, Jan 9, 2000, at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center in Dover, N.H.
Born Dec. 15, 1928, in Thomaston, Maine, he was the son of Siguid and Signe (Anderson) Stein of Thomaston. He was a graduate of Thomaston High School.
He was an Air Force veteran, having served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was also stationed in Germany for six years and retired after 21 years of service. He then worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until his retirement in 1989.
In addition to his mother, survivors include a son, Richard Stein and his wife, Joan, of Rochester, N.H.; a granddaughter, Paula Marie Hughes of Rochester, N.H.; two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Natasha Hughes of Rochester, N.H.; two brothers, Stanley Stein of Warren, Maine, and Walter Stein of Thomaston, Maine; his former wife, Katherine Lewis Docker of Rochester, N.H.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private funeral services will be held at the Finnish Congregational Church, Thomaston, Maine, with burial in Anderson Cemetery, Thomaston, in the spring.
Dorothy Belliveau
BELLIVEAU - Dorothy J. "Dottie," of 15 Belmont Ave., died Jan. 7 in York Beach. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment in First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital Oncology Center, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.
Ralph K. Bauer
NORTH HAMPTON - Ralph K. Bauer, 70, of 136 Post Road, died at his home Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, after a period of failing health.
Born Jan. 28, 1929, in Randolph, Ohio, he was the son of Joseph and Florence (Cunningham) Bauer. He was a resident of North Hampton for the past 39 years. He served in the Air Force and was then employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. After more than 40 years of service to his country he retired from quality control.
He was a member of the United Churh of Christ.
He was the husband of Hazel (Veach) Bauer for 42 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Robert Bauer of Exeter; three daughters Cheryl Sostak of Exeter, Catherine Arnold of Wells, and Sandra Corbett of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Marjorie J. Mitchell
EAST KINGSTON - Marjorie J. Mitchell, 70, of Stagecoach Road, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 27, 1929, in Kensington, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Grace (Wilbur) Jordan. She had resided in East Kingston since 1988.
She was employed by AT&T in North Andover, Mass., before retiring in January 1995.
Her interests included music and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Mitchell of East Kingston; a son, Robert Mitchell of South Carolina; eight grandchildren; two brothers; and a sister.
Carlotta (Charlotte) D. (Dondero) Bailey
OXON HILL, Md. - Carlotta (Charlotte) D. (Dondero) Bailey, 75, of Oxon Hill and formerly of Portsmouth, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000.
Born Nov. 2, 1924, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Charles Anthony Dondero and Mary Ellen Carey.
She served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
She retired from the federal government, where she worked as a records maintenance officer.
She was the wife of Ernest M. Bailey.
In addition to her husband, survivors include four children, Mary Ellen Bailey, John C. Bailey, Robert A. Bailey and Marcy A. Bailey; two sisters, Eileen Foley of Portsmouth, and Jacqueline Michener; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Eileen Marie Bailey.
Romeo I. DeRoy
PORTSMOUTH - Romeo I. DeRoy, 83, of 18 Osprey Drive, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 14, 1916, in South Berwick, he was the son of Adolph and Attela (Labissoniere) DeRoy. He had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1951.
He retired from Shop 11 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with 36 years of service.
He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church.
He was the husband of Yvonne (Boucher) DeRoy for 49 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Michele Grondahl of Portsmouth and Holly A. DeRoy of Dover; two sons, Joe A. DeRoy of Wells and Dana R. DeRoy of Somersworth; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Anne L. Clark
KITTERY POINT - Anne Lawrence Clark, of Pepperell Road, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Sentry Hill in York.
Born Jan. 14, 1908, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of Eugene and Margaret (Patterson) Lawrence.
She was a past matron of the Eastern Star (Piscataqua Chapter) and a member of the First Congregational Church in Kittery Point.
She was an operator with New England Telephone for 30 years.
She was the wife of the late Lt. Sherman Clark of Maine State Police.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Paine of Kittery Point and her son, Albert Martin of York. Also surviving are four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Helen G. Hilgenhurst
EXETER - Helen G. Hilgenhurst, 95, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation, where she had been a resident since 1994.
Born Oct. 6, 1904, in Paterson, N.J., she was the daughter of the late George and Susan (Miller) Hughes. For many years, she resided in Hawthorne, N.J. She then moved to Arlington, Mass., and later to Langdon Place in Exeter in 1988.
She was the wife of the late Charles Gordon Hilgenhurst.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Arleen A. Hilgenhurst of Haverhill, Mass.; three grandchildren, Charles Grafford of Hingham, Mass., Loren Hilgenhurst Stevens of Atkinson, N.H., and Sgt. 1st Class John K. Hilgenhurst, U.S. Army, Germany; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Charles G. Hilgenhurst.
Edgar L. Fournier
PORTSMOUTH - Edgar L. Fournier, 73, of 27 Holiday Drive, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a sudden illness.
Born March 16, 1926, in Nashua, N.H., he was the son of Amedee and Eulalie (Mizo) Fournier. He had resided in Portsmouth most of his life.
For more than 40 years, he was employed as a machinist with Chadwick and Trefethen until his retirement 11 years ago.
He was a member of St. James Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Lorraine Fistola and her husband, Augustine, of Hyde Park, Mass., and Yolande Doherty and her husband, Vincent, of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Gloria Vinciguerra, and her husband, John.
Frederick T. Riley
HAMPTON - The funeral for Frederick T. Riley, 63, of 4 Noel Street, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham was principal celebrant and the Rev. Daniel Sinibaldi and the Rev. Francis McGann were concelebrants. Nelson K. Ward was organist. Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Acolytes were Pete Casavant, George Brown and Paul Sullivan. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Ham and the Rev. Sinibaldi. Pallbearers were Dan Ripley, Paul Riley, John Pitman, Shawn Pitman, and Andrew Zuidema.
Dorothy J. Belliveau
YORK BEACH - Dorothy J. "Dottie" Belliveau, 58, of 15 Belmont Ave., died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at her home after a lengthy period of illness.
Born May 8, 1941, in Boston, she was the daughter of William E. Sr. and Kathleen (Kemmitt) Mahoney. She was a 1959 graduate of St. Rose High School in Chelsea, Mass.
From 1979-1999, she was the administrative assistant to the town manager of York.
She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church in York.
She enjoyed traveling and walking, and also knitting, sewing, quilting, crocheting and cooking.
She was the wife of Andrew J. Belliveau of York Beach.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Dawn M. Belliveau of Portland and Michelle L. Belliveau of York; her father and stepmother, William E. Sr. and Dorothy Mahoney of York Beach; two brothers, William E. Mahoney Jr. of York and Ronald Mahoney of Beverly, Mass.; and one sister, Kathleen Gatto of Tucson, Ariz.
She was predeceased by her mother, Kathleen L. Mahoney, who died in 1975.
Richard E. Pickford
DUBLIN, N.H. - Richard E. Pickford Sr., 57, of Valley Road, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, N.H., after a sudden illness.
Born April 17, 1943, in Peterborough, he was the son of the late William F. and Charlotte (Cutter) Pickford. He was a 1961 graduate of the former Peterborough High School. He had been a resident of Dublin for the past five years and previously lived in Jaffrey.
He had trained as an auto body repairman at Mercier's Garage in Peterborough. He later worked for Hayes Motor Sales in Jaffrey where he further learned his craft. In 1967, he started Kustom Valley Auto Body in his father's garage on Valley Road in Dublin. He later moved the business to Jaffrey, where he continued to operate until 1985. He then purchased the former Arista Chevrolet building in Peterborough where he continued the auto body repair business along with Pickford Jeep and Eagle. He sold this business in 1989. He then became a licensed real estate broker and established Pickford Realty in Dublin. He and his wife currently owened and operated Kids Club ChildCare Center in Jaffrey.
He was a former member and past president of the Jaffrey Lions Club. He was a former member of the Peterborough Lions and was a member of the Monadnock Rotary. He was a charter member of the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce, a former Cub Master of the Jaffrey Cub Scout pack.
He was a racing enthusiast and a former owner and driver of a NASCAR modified race car.
He enjoyed and supported youth baseball and basketball. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Keene Country Club. He was a member of the Contoocook Valley Board of Realtors.
He was the husband of Renee (Letorneau) Pickford for 19 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Pamela LaFleur of Peterborough and Linda M. Rautio of Temple; two sons, Richard E. Pickford II of Portsmouth and William C. Pickford of Dublin; seven grandchildren; an aunt; an uncle; and several cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, William C. Pickford.
Helen Podbielski
ERIE, Pa. - Helen Kondzielski Podbielski, 82, a resident of Western Reserve Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Saint Vincent Health Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1917, in Oil City, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary Schor Kondzielski.
She worked as a waitress for the Sportsmen's Athletic Club in Millcreek Township and also for General Electric Co. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the Polish Falcons Club.
She enjoyed gardening.
She was the wife of the late Edward Podbielski, who died in 1984.
Survivors include four daughters, Edwina Grolemund of Lake Worth, Fla., Mrs. Albert (Sylvia) Stewart of Portsmouth, N.H., Dorothy Wiharski of Erie, Pa., and Geraldine Strain of Cambridge Springs, Pa.; two sisters, Lottie Balahosky of Youngstown, Ohio, and Marie Butterfield of Pensacola, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Frances Hallus, Josephine Condy and Wanda Karasinsky; and two brothers, John Grabowski and Thaddius Kondzielski.
A funeral Mass was held in Erie on Dec. 30, 1999, and was co-celebrated by her two grandsons, the Rev. John Santor and the Rev. Thaddius Kondzielski.
