Thomas A. Collins

HAMPTON - The funeral of Thomas A. Collins, 72, of Hampton was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was the celebrant. Salvator DiVincenzo was acolyte. The pall was placed over the casket by Mrs. Rosemary T. (Dobson) Collins, widow of Collins and their five children, Anne Hodsdon, David Collins, Chris Collins, Ellen Galvin, and Thomas Collins. Marjorie Scully was organist and Mary Louise Arcidi was cantor and soloist. The readings were offered by David Collins and Sean Collins, grandchildren of Collins. Patricia Corcoran offered the Prayer of the Faithful. Tara Galvin, Erin Galvin and Morganne Hodsdon, also grandchildren of Collins presented the gifts of the altar. Maureen Manglia offered the eulogy. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, Rye, with the committal service conducted by Rev. Lavigne. Paul G. Higgins and Walter Corcoran assisted as pallbearers.

Carlton Brillard

YORK - Carlton Brillard, 71, of 17-D Crest Park died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at his home.

Born Feb. 10, 1928, in Waterville, Maine, he was the son of Roland and Ethel (Morin) Brillard. He was raised in Unity, Maine, and attended Unity schools.

He served in the Air Force for 24 years, retiring in 1970. He had served during World War II and the Korean War. He later was employed for 12 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the receiving and supply department in Building 240, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and cooking.

He is survived by his wife, Rosa A. (Danieli) Brillard of York.

Other survivors include a son, Michael D. Brillard and his wife, Lynne of Hampton; three brothers, Roland Brillard Jr., of Wyoming, David Brillard of Brunswick, Maine, and Arthur Brillard of Unity; and two grandchildren.

Adelle S. Snay

RYE - Adelle S. Snay, 88, formerly of Hampton, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in Webster at Rye Health & Retirement.

Born Sept. 1, 1911, in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Nejim and Katherine (Hyder) Freije. She was a 1929 graduate of Methuen (Mass.) High School. She has resided in Hampton since 1960 since moving from Manchester.

She and her husband, Albert H. Snay, who died in 1993, owned and operated the Seascape Motel at Hampton Beach from 1960-1981. She also owned the Vanity's Case, a woman's clothing store, during the 1960s and 1970s.

Survivors include a brother, Fred Freije of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Nellie O'Donnell and Edna Kawash, both of Lawrence; and several nieces and nephews.

Gary A. Risden

PORTSMOUTH - A largely attended funeral service for Gary A. Risden, 49, of 117 Blue Heron Drive, were held on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by the Rev. Msgr. Lawrence Burns. Lector was David Palumbo.

The eucharistic gifts were presented by his sisters, Sherry Poisson and Angela Risden.

The eulogy was given by his son, Adam C. Risden, and his cousin, William Marcello.

Committal services were held at Calvary Cemetery with Msgr. Burns conducting.

Pall bearers were Joseph Nigrelli, William Marcello, Judd Marcello, Vincent D'Nunzzio, Robert Geraci, and Richard McCombie.

Julia Pirini

DOVER - Julia Pirini, 72, of 2 Hamilton St., died at her home Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, after a lengthy period of illness.

Born on May 16, 1927, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Biagio and Candina Donin, she was a resident there before moving to Dover 14 years ago.

She was the wife of the late Leto Pirini who died in 1994.

She is survived by a daughter, Olly Upshaw of Dover; two sons, Steve Pirini of Barrington, and Dennis Pirini of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Matthew Upshaw, Pamela Upshaw and Jen Wakefield; a brother, Nello Donini of Rochester; and many nieces and nephews.

Hazel M. Lary

EXETER - Hazel M. Lary, 91, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Seacoast Health Care Center in Hampton. She had resided there for the past year following a stroke. She formerly resided at Hayes Trailer Park, Exeter, for 40 years.

Born May 5, 1908, in Rye Beach, she was the daughter of Harry Abbott and Gertrude Peek White. She was a graduate of Traip Academy.

She was employed at the Exeter Handkerchief Company for 30 years and was a volunteer for the Retired Senior Program and the Rockingham Nutrition Program of Exeter.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Exeter, the founder and first president of the Darning Needle Club of Rye, past president of Pocahontas No. 32 of Exeter and a 74-year member of the Piscataqua Chapter No. 90 O.E.S. of Kittery.

She was the wife of the late George Lary, who died in 1956.

He is survived by a sister, Alice W. Kent and her husband, Roy E. of Rollinsford; a niece, Sharon White; a grand niece, Jennifer Hood; and a great-grand nephew, Austin L. Hood of Titusville, Fla.; several cousins and close friends, Su-Ann Cartier of Candia and Kevin Williams of Exeter.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Harry Abbott and George Linwood White.

Patricia Gardella

SEABROOK - Mrs. Patricia (Haumann) Gardella, 67, of 6 Manchester St., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

Born March 17, 1932, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine (McGrath) Haumann. She was raised in Providence R.I. and attended Saint Patrick's Elementary School and was a 1949 graduate from Saint Patrick's High School.

A resident of Swampscott, Mass. from 1964 until 1987, she was a former member of Saint John the Evangelist Parish where she was active with the Couples Club and as a member of several fund-raising committees for the church and local schools.

A resident of Seabrook Beach for the past 13 years, she was a member of the Seabrook Women's Club. She was well known for the many afghans that she knitted for family and friends and also enjoyed reading, cooking, crafts, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was the wife of Robert A. Gardella for 42 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Robert C. Gardella and his wife Carolyn of Westwood, MA.; four daughters, Linda W. Samia and her husband Gary of Sanford, Jodi Serasis and her husband, Steve, of Norwalk, Conn., Sandra A. Gardella-Cherry and her husband, Chris Cherry, of Stafford, Va., and Maryelaine Gardella of Seabrook Beach; two sisters, Joan Lake and MaryLou Buonfiglio, both of Cranston, R.I.; eight grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert E. Frost

YORK - Robert E. "Jack" Frost, 71, of 17 Old Chase Pond Road, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born on April 8, 1928, in York, the son of Roderick U. and Florence M. (Rideout) Frost.

He served in the Marine Corps after helping to build of the Maine Turnpike. He operated the Gulf Station at York Corner for several years before going to Simplex Wire Cable Company of Newington, retiring in 1991 after 37 years.

He enjoyed working on cars, hunting and fishing. For 25 years, he was involved in car racing in Dover, Sanford and Beech Ridge Speedway.

He was a three-time master and life member of St. Aspinquid Lodge No. 198, a member of the Scottish Rites - Valley of Portland, Kora Shrine and a director in the York County Shrine. He was a past and worthy patron of Fadette Chapter No. 166 Order of Eastern Star of York and worthy patron of Peabody Mt. Washington Chapter No. 35, O.E.S. of Tilton. He was a DeMolay advisor and Rainbow Dad.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carole (Bennett) Frost of York.

Other survivors include a son, Robert J. Frost and his wife, Diana of York; one daughter, Mrs. Dale (Gail) Hilbourne of York; a brother, Walter "Tiny" Frost and his wife Maxine of Cape Neddick; and five grandchildren, and Jason, Adam Hilbourne, Lanta, Amanda and Joshua Bice.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Frost, who died in 1980.

George V. Lombard

YORK - George Vernon Lombard, 88, died Dec. 29, 1999, at York Hospital.

Born Jan. 26, 1911, in Casco, Maine, he was the son of Fred Clinton and Louise Chute Lombard. He graduated high school in Maine.

He was retired from Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, Conn.

He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening.

He was the husband of Melba A. Spaulding Lombard.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, James B. Lombard of Barkhamsted, Conn., and Fred Lombard of Avon, Conn.; two daughters, Gail L. Coffey of Eliot; and Deborah L. Spenser of Herndon, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Sydney A. Bush

OGUNQUIT - Sydney A. Bush, 91, of 17 Juniper Lane, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born April 6, 1908, in New York City, he was the son of Abraham and Rebecca Nelson Bush. He was a resident of Ogunquit and York, and previously resided in Yardley, Pa.

He owned and operated Sydney A. Bush & Co., a New York City firm designing and manufacturing women's garments.

He was the husband of the late Kathryn B. (Cohn) Bush, who died in 1998. They were married in 1933.

Survivors include a son, Barry Bush and his wife, Flora, of Kittery; a brother, Harold Bush of Riverdale, N.Y.; a sister, Dorothy Katz of Delray Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Bryan and Erik Bush, both of Kittery; and a great-granddaughter, Brianna Kathryn Moulton.

Kimberly S. Morse

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Kimberly Sue "Kimmie" Morse, 32, of 5 Garibaldi St., died suddenly of Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at her residence.

Born Jan. 24, 1967, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Edward R. and Ruth (Tobey) Morse. She was a 1985 graduate of York High School. She was currently an aesthetician student at Warwick Academy of Beauty Culture in Warwick, R.I. She had resided in Rhode Island for the past three years.

She had attended the York Street Baptist Church in York, and enjoyed traveling.

In addition to her mother, she was survived by two sisters, Cathy J. Ash of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Sandra L. Estes of York; a brother, Carl E. Morse of York; several nephews, nieces and a great-nephew. She was the Big Sister of Heather Marquis of York.

She was predeceased by her father on Aug. 23, 1999.

Arthur Hopley

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Arthur Henry Percival Hopley, 87, of 1365 South St., were held Saturday from Buckminster Chapel, with services at North Congregational Church in Market Square.

The Rev. Reva Karstens, interim pastor, officiated. Psalms were read by grandson, Michael Parr, and granddaughter, Karen B. Parr. Words of remembrance were given by his son, Richard A. Hopley. Wendall Purrington was soloist and organist was Richard Gremlitz.

In attendance were members of the church; representatives from St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; Portsmouth Rotary; Warwick Club; National Association of Postmasters; and the Portsmouth Country Club.

The American flag was presented to his widow, Dorothy (Foster) Hopley.

Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, at a later date.

Richard J. Owens

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Richard J. Owens, 63, of 269 Main St., Eliot, were held Saturday at Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. John Filler, pastor of the Newington Congregational Church, officiated.

Words of remembrance were given by Charles Gasper and Allan Dame. Masonic services were given by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM, including Wor. Master Donald L. Stevens; Senior Deacon Peter Paisley; Secretary Glen Gordon, PM; Calvin C. Wilder, PM; Francis N. Bridge, PM; A. Kenneth Day, PM; and Ensley Tibbetts, PM.

In attendance were representatives from St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, and the Sunrise Grill.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Kimberly S. Morse
