Arnold C. Spinney
MANCHESTER - Arnold C. Spinney, 99, of 465 Medford St., formerly of Eliot, widower of Mildred L. (Moulton) Spinney, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at his grandsons residence in Manchester.
Born Feb. 22, 1900, in Eliot, he was the son of Albert L. and Sadie (Staples) Spinney and attended local schools.
He worked for 25 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1949. He then worked locally as a painter for many years.
He was a member of the Eliot Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, playing cards, watching boxing on television as well as the Red Sox.
He is survived by seven grandchildren, Arnold R. Dow of Raymond, Janice (Dow) Brown of Amesbury, Mass., Andrea (Dow) Rogers of Seabrook, Douglass Dow of Epping, Dennis Dow of Manchester, Denise (Dow) Spaulding of Byfield, Mass., William R. Dow Jr. of Byfield, Mass.; 19 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; a nephew, Frederick Shapleigh Jr. of Eliot; a niece, Julia Spinney Dufore of Kittery; and his son-in-law, William Dow Sr. of Epping.
Besides his wife, who died in 1993, he was predeceased by two daughters, Margaret Spinney, who died in 1924, and Marion L. Spinney Dow, who died in 1981. He was also predeceased by a grandson, Kenneth Dow in 1997.
David W. Hanscom
LARGO, Fla. - David W. Hanscom, 69, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000.
He was born in Portsmouth where he resided until he moved to Florida in 1980.
He was a veteran of the Army and worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was also a member of the Portsmouth chapter of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of St. Catherine's Sienna Church.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Hanscom, of 50 years.
Other survivors include two daughters, Roxane Aldhizer of Clearwater, Fla., and Jodie M. Hanscom of Dover; two sons, Chris W. Hanscom of Seminole, Fla., and Rick Hanscom of Plantsville, Conn.; a sister, Shirley Finn of Virginia; and two brothers, Lincoln Hanscom of Wakefield, and Robert Hanscom of Englewood, Fla.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lincoln and Adeline (Wilson) Hanscom, a brother, Maurice Hanscom, and a grandson, Keith Hanscom.
Samuel Rottenberg
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Samuel Rottenberg, of Portsmouth, were held Sunday from Buckminster Chapel, with services at Temple Israel. Rabbi David Mark, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Harold Moldoff and Bert Freedman.
The American flag was presented to Mr. Rottenberg's widow, Mrs. Mary (Abrams) Rottenberg.
In attendance were members of Temple Israel; the Temple board of directors; members of B'nai B'rith; the Hadassah; the Brotherhood of the Temple; and the Sisterhood of the Temple.
Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.
Pallbearers were Scott Meenes, Jeffery Meenes, Deborah Rottenberg, Harold Moldoff and Dr. Ira Schwartz.
Helen Brackett
GREENLAND - Helen Arlene Haigh Brackett died in the presence of her family at the Edgewood Center on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000. She had been at the Edgewood Center for two weeks following two years of loving in-home care by her devoted husband, John.
Born July 27, 1916, in Bowdoinham, Maine, she was the daughter of William C. Haigh and Mina Kessler Haigh. She was one of seven children: Alice Haigh Bartlett, William Haigh, Edward Haigh, Louise Haigh Viveritto, Henry Haigh and Albert Haigh.
Helen moved to Greenland as a child and attended Greenland Central School and was a 1932 graduate of Portsmouth High School, where she excelled academically and graduated with honors at age 16.
She married John R. Brackett of Greenland in 1940 and lived at Brackett's Point on Great Bay, Greenland, all of her adult life. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, raising six wonderful children and 17 grandchildren.
Her activities centered around her family, faith and community. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, deaconess of the Greenland Community Congregational Church as well as the financial secretary. She was also active in the Ladies Club of Greenland.
In addition to her husband of 59 years, survivors include her children and their spouses: Marcia and Charles Horne of Orinda, Calif., Mary and Mel Read of Yarmouth, Maine, John and Joanne Brackett of Greenland, Thomas and Alison Brackett of Greenland, Anthony and Millie Brackett of Greenland, and Stephanie and Chris Horne of Boulder, Colo.; and a brother, Albert, of Reading, Mass.
She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Monica Horne and Amelia Rose Brackett.
Samuel Rottenberg
PORTSMOUTH - Samuel Rottenberg, 85, of 64 Hillcrest Drive, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Chelsea, Mass., in 1914, he was the son late Isaac and Sarah (Verman) Rottenberg. He attended Chelsea schools and Harvard Business School.
He owned a meat market in Chelsea before enlisting in the Army in 1941. After returning from the service, he owned and operated Crystal Oil in Portsmouth for 25 years. He was a longtime member of Temple Israel in Portsmouth.
He was the beloved husband of Mary (Abrams) for 57 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Meenes and her husband, Ronald, of Framingham, Mass.; a son, Harry Rottenberg and his wife, Deborah, of Rochester; six grandchildren, Scott and Jeffrey Meenes, Nicole and Jay Gendron, and Kyle and David Rottenberg; two brothers, Paul Savsovitz of Saugus, Mass., and Jack Rottenberg of Everett, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by Bessie Elfman Miller.
Lena V. Devine
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Lena Vera Devine, 90, of Portsmouth, were held Saturday at Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. The Rev. Gordon Allen officiated.
Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring.
Louis T. Bruno
PORTSMOUTH - Louis Thomas Bruno, 83, of Portsmouth, formerly of Salem, N.H., died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at the SunBridge Nursing Home in Portsmouth.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., he was a lifelong Salem, N.H., resident, moving to Portsmouth two years ago.
He was the owner and operator of Hart Sales, formerly of Methuen, Mass.
A World War II veteran, he served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 8546 in Salem.
He was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Church in Salem, N.H.
He was the husband of the late Doris I. (Hadley) Bruno.
Survivors include a son, Samuel Bruno and his wife, Paula, of Portsmouth; two daughters, Nancy J. Dumont and her husband, Richard, of Southampton, Mass., and Barbara J. Faucher and her husband, Robert, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Marshall Brighenti
LEE, Mass. - Marshall Brighenti, 87, of Laurel Street, Lee, Mass., and formerly of Goose Pond in Tyringham, Mass., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at the Laurel Lake Rehabilitation Center in Lee.
Born Feb. 8, 1912, in Poughquag, N.Y., he was the son of Henry and Josephine Vedelli Brighenti. He came to Lee in 1922 and was educated in Lee schools.
He worked at the former Maceri's Lumber Yard, and later at Brandt's Lumber Yard and the Dresser Hull Lumber Co., all in Lee. He also worked at Western Wire in Lee and Westfield and then at Lee Lime, retiring in 1974.
He was a member of the Berkshire Hills Council No. 314 of the Knights of Columbus of Lee and a member of the Bishop Conaty Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a charter member of the Lee Kiwanis, a former member of the Pittsfield Eagles and the Lee Sons of Italy G. Marconi Lodge No. 1620. He was a current member of the Italian Fraternal Society. He was also an avid fisherman.
On June 17, 1933, he married the late Adelina M. Cadenelli. She died in 1981.
Survivors include two sons, James Brighenti of Portsmouth, N.H., and William Brighenti of Tyringham, Mass.; two daughters, Mrs. Norma Tolkey of Lee, Mass., and Mrs. Rena Gleason of Worcester, Mass.; two brothers, James Brighenti of Wingdale, N.Y., and Phillip Brighenti of Lee, Mass.; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Sousa of Lee, Mass., and Mrs. Vera Petersoli of Lee, Mass.; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He is the loving grandfather of Maureen, Barbara, Kelly, Jane, James Jr., Debra, Cynthia, Peter, Steven, Michael, Andrew, Charles, Joseph, Kevin, Keith and Kris.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Augustino and William Brighenti and John Tonlino.
Beatrice M. Taylor
BERWICK, Maine - Beatrice M. (Hutchins) Taylor, 85, of Knox Lane, answered the heavenly call of God and entered into the loving arms of her savior, Jesus Christ, from the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, after a brief period of illness.
Born April 21, 1914, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Charles J. and Sadie (Walsh) Hutchins.
She worked in retail and retired in 1977 from K-Mart Corp. After her retirement, she moved back to Berwick.
For more than 80 years, she was an active member of the Salvation Army in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She spent many years lovingly working with the children of her church, the Salvation Army, as Sunbeam leader and Sunday School teacher. She also served as Home League secretary in Quincy, Mass. She served as League of Mercy secretary of New Hampshire Salvation Army and frequently visited hospitals and nursing homes.
She was the wife of the late Philip A. Taylor, who died in 1972.
Survivors include four loving children, Charles E. Taylor of Berwick, Kathleen A. Bevan of Troy, N.Y., Marietta J. Uttley of Liverpool, N.Y., and David A. Taylor of Quincy, Mass.; their spouses, Kenneth Bevan, Jerry Uttley and Marilyn Taylor; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Philip G. Taylor in 1997; two brothers, Charles J. Hutchins and George Hutchins; and a sister, Emily Troutman.
David A. Delfino
GREENLAND - Mr. David Angelo Delfino, 72, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 17, 1927, in Concord, N.H., he was the son of Angelo Delfino of Ofina, Italy, and Catherine (Kelly) Delfino of Lexington, Mass. He attended schools in West Concord, Mass., and Lexington, Mass.
Mr. Delfino served in the U.S. Air Force with the rank of staff sergeant in both the European and Orient tours.
In 1973, he formed his own successful business, David A. Delfino Plumbing, Heating and Wiring.
He was a volunteer firefighter and police officer for the town of Greenland, N.H., as well as a respected and outspoken voice in the Greenland town meetings, where he will be remembered as "Mr. Sludge."
He was the beloved husband to his devoted wife of 40 years, Lucille (Moody) Delfino.
He will be greatly missed by his four daughters, Gloria and her husband Tom Eisenman of Santa Rosa, Calif., Alice and her husband Damon Frampton of Winterhaven, Fla., Angeline Huffman, widow of Faywin Huffman, of Newport, N.C., and Brenda Delfino of Exeter, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Chase Jr., B. Gregory Newton II, Alicia Myers, Tabbatha Green, Tiffani Williams, James Williams II, and his constant companion and youngest grandchild, Amanda Gagne; as well as four great-grandchildren; his sister, Clara Gatley of Woburn, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Delfino was predeceased by his sister, Frances Comati, and brother, William Delfino.
Roger L. Papineau
ELIOT - Roger Louis Papineau, 67, of Eliot, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at his home after a long battle with cancer.
Born Sept. 17, 1932, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Armond Joseph and Doris Edna (Daniel) Papineau, he graduated from Kenmore High School in Kenmore, N.Y. in 1950.
After serving two years in the Navy, he attended Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, N.Y. and graduated in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
He raised a family in Merrimack then resided in Amherst before moving to Eliot in 1996. He designed and installed solar home and pool-heating systems at his private business, Solar Energy Company. He also worked for Sanders Associates in New Hampshire as a microwave engineer from 1962 until his retirement in 1986.
He was a charter member of the Merrimack Ambulance Rescue Service (1967 - 1971), and volunteered for New Hampshire Public Television for four years. He also volunteered for the Merrimack River Watershed Council leading canoe trips, and received its Volunteer of the Year award in 1994 for his water quality monitoring efforts on the Souhegan River.
He enjoyed river and white-water canoeing, taking his 15-foot Runabout out on the ocean and in the rivers and inlets of the Maine and New Hampshire coastlines. His creative works included: singing funny songs and choral compositions, several original needlepoints, sign making and woodworking, stone masonry, stained glass, an adventure article published in Points East Magazine (June 1999), and fixing everything that he thought needed fixing.
He attended South Church in Portsmouth (Unitarian Universalist), led a Men's group, an Enneagram group, and recently taught the course "Conscious Aging." He felt strongly about truth, tolerance of all people, living a meaningful life and experiencing it fully.
He is survived by two brothers, Daniel Papineau of Bremerton, Wash., and Marc Papineau of Eden Prairie, Minn.; two daughters, Lynn Ann of Pelham, and Diane Marie of Groton, Mass.; a son, James Joseph Papineau; and a grandson James Robert of Amherst,; his fiancee Mary Ann Simmons of Tilton,; his former wife Mary Ann (Rehill) Papineau of Merrimack; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
