Joy F. Watson
HAMPTON - Joy F. Watson, 46, of 1 Barbour Road, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at her home following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born in Exeter, May 27, 1953, she was the daughter of Frank and Janet (Randall) Fitzgerald of Hampton.
She was a 1971 graduate of Winnacunnet High School and attended New Hampshire College.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Thomas J. Bridge, CPA and for the past 10 years was self employed as a bookkeeper.
She was a member and the mission treasurer of the First Baptist Church of Hampton Falls. She was a volunteer at the Portsmouth Christian Academy in Dover and was a lifelong resident of Hampton.
She was the wife of Anthony J. Watson of Hampton for 20 years.
In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include two sons, Dan McInnis of Denver and Tyler Watson of Hampton; one brother, Paul Fitzgerald of Hampton Falls; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Helen M. Livingston
EXETER - Helen M. Livingston, 90, of 10 Patricia Ave., died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a long illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1909, in Lynn, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Julius and Mary (Stanifzewska) Shanosky.
She grew up in Lynn, Mass., was a former resident of Haverhill, Mass., Plaistow, Atkinson, and had resided in Exeter for the past 23 years until her death.
She was a graduate of the Burdette College in Lynn, Mass., where she received a degree in business.
She was employed for 20 years at the Haverhill Public Library, working mainly as assistant librarian.
She did a lot of volunteer work in Plaistow with the elderly, a program called Vista Volunteers.
She, along with her husband, ran a senior citizens program at Holy Angels Church in Plaistow. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church of Exeter.
In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano.
She was the wife of William Livingston of Exeter for 66 years.
Other surviving family members include a daughter, Joanne Kenyon of Waterboro; two grandsons, Michael Livingston of Wells, and Robert Livingston of Epsom; one great grandson, Samuel Livingston of Wells, one sister, Gladys Erchart of Peabody, Mass.; one brother, Edward Shanosky of Lynn, Mass., several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one son, Robert Livingston, who died in 1999.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. Burial will be at the Atkinson Cemetery in the spring.
Jean Huston
PORTSMOUTH - Jean Waldron Huston, 92, our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend was called home by the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2000, in San Antonio, Texas.
Born Nov. 5, 1907, in Kittery Point, she was the daughter of Fred and Margaret Waldron. "Jean" as she was known by all her friends, was a resident of Foyes Lane, Kittery Point, until the death of her husband, Ray I. Huston. In 1974, she moved to San Antonio to live with her son and daughter-in-law.
She was a 1925 graduate of Robert Traip Academy. She was employed in the grocery business in Portsmouth for many years.
Her sense of humor and her ability to "never meet a stranger" endeared her to all. A lover of animals, she made a home for many strays.
Survivors include her son, Frederick J. Kane and daughter-in-law, Sybil; grandson, Marty R. Kane; great granddaughter, Gina M. Kane, all of San Antonio; stepdaughters, Mildred Grady of Greenland, and Ruth Donat of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Alex and John Waldron.
Services will be held at Chapel Hill Methodist Church in San Antonio at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Mary J. Amoruso
RALEIGH, N.C. - Mary Josephine Amoruso, 94, formerly of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, in Raleigh, after a long period of failing health.
Born in Portsmouth on Sept. 18, 1905, she was the daughter of Timothy and Mary Meehan. She was a resident here for 83 years before moving to Raleigh.
She was retired from the Internal Revenue Service in Portsmouth and was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
She was the widow of Joseph M. Amoruso.
Survivors include two sons, John J. Amoruso of Houston and Paul Amoruso of Needham, Mass.; one daughter, Donna M. Moffett of Raleigh; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Donald J. Amoruso.
Carl T. Wurzbacher
MOODY, Maine - Carl Theodore Wurzbacher, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center in North Berwick.
Born Dec. 21, 1911, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of Carl John and Minnie (Hoppe) Wurzbacher. He was a graduate of the Wentworth Institute in Boston.
He was a mail supervisor on the Boston-to-Bangor train route and the mobile highway post office until his retirement in 1971. He had spent many years in Lantana, Fla., with summers in Ogunquit, before moving back to Moody and Wells.
He was a member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and an elder member of the Faith Presbyterian Church of Palm Springs, Fla. He was a member of many Bible study groups in Florida.
He was an avid coin and stamp collector. He enjoyed collecting and reading maps. He also enjoyed reading, bowling and playing shuffleboard.
He was the husband of Dorothy Jean (Douglas) Wurzbacher.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Carl T. Wurzbacher Jr. of Hartsville, S.C.; a stepson, Arthur Wright of Rochester, N.H.; a daughter, Karen Zerlaut of Carlsbad, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Jean L. Ladderbush of Ogunquit, Maine; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Campbell, who died in 1991.
John S. Lernatowitz
STRATHAM - John S. Lernatowitz, 83, of Stratham, and formerly of Keene, N.H., died Saturday evening, Feb. 26, 2000, in Exeter after a period of failing health.
Born April 30, 1916, in Yonkers, N.Y., he was the son of William L. and Mary (Podilak) Lernatowitz. He grew up in Northfield, Mass., attending Northfield schools and Northfield Mount Herman Academy.
As a teen-ager, he worked for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. (A&P stores) of New Hampshire and Vermont, learning the trade of meat cutter.
In the early 1940s, he became a skilled machinist and was the proprietor of John's IGA of Keene for 15 years, during which time he developed a fine reputation for quality meats and provisions. After the sale of his store, he worked in the wholesale grocery business.
He then became foreman and salesman for the Melanson Roofing Co. of Keene for 15 years, and was widely known for his courteous and dependable business practices.
In 1940, he married Olga (Waida) of Springfield, Vt. She died in 1960.
Mr. Lernatowitz loved nature and animals. He enjoyed and was generous with his time and love to his immediate and extended family and friends.
He attended St. Bernard Church and St. Margaret Mary Church, both of Keene, and St. Michael's Church in Exeter.
He was a life member of the Keene Lodge of Elks No. 927.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce K. Frasier and her husband, Francis, of Stratham; five grandchildren, John W. Frasier and his wife, Katherine, of Concord, N.H, Heather L. Chabot and her husband, Christopher, of Campton, N.H., Christopher T. Frasier of Rye, Hilary G. Hayes and her husband, Stephen, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Courtney M. Frasier of Barrington, N.H.; three great-grandchildren, Delaney J. Chabot, Andrew F. Chabot and Anna Frasier; three sisters, Pauline Pelech of Scarborough, Maine, Stella Melnick of Manchester, Conn., Anne Matuszewski of Hinsdale, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. A daughter, Cynthia G. Lernatowitz, died in infancy; one sister, Tessie Wilt of Maryland; and his devoted late friend, Anastasia Smith of Keene.
Richard T. Ellis
ELIOT - Richard Thomas Ellis, infant son of Timothy M. and Jennifer L. (Wirick) Ellis, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, shortly after birth at York Hospital Birthing Center.
He is survived by his loving parents, Timothy and Jennifer Ellis of Eliot; great-grandmother Marlyne McCoy of Rochester; grandparents Richard and Mary Ellis of Eliot, and Steven and Joanne Lewis of Rochester; aunts and uncles, Debra and Denis Whyte of Eliot, Paul and Wanda Ellis of Eliot, Brian Ellis of Kittery, and Rebecca and Rob Marshall of Rochester.
Riddick `Fred' L. Fralick
NORTH HAMPTON - Riddick "Fred" L. Fralick, 80, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the Sunbridge Nursing Home in Exeter after a period of failing health.
Born Sept. 8, 1919, in Orangeburg, S.C., he was the son of the late Hampie and Maude (Bloom) Fralick. A University of New Hampshire graduate, he had resided in North Hampton since 1963.
From 1950 to '60, he was a member of the Navy.
He had been employed as a field engineer for Vitro Corp. in Portsmouth.
He was the husband of Elinor "Louise" (Williams) Fralick of North Hampton for 47 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Richard Fralick of Greenland, William Fralick of Deerfield, N.H., and David Fralick of Stratham; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Talmadge Fralick and Hampie Fralick Jr., both of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Margaret Corbett and Jolee Williams, both of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours.
Private services will be held at a later date.
Dr. Philip H. White Jr.
STRAFFORD - Dr. Philip Haven White Jr., 67, of Strafford, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.
Born in Portsmouth, on June 4, 1932, and raised in the South End of Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Philip Haven Sr. and Edna Keene (Smith) White.
He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1950 and a graduate of BJ Palmer College.
He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and in the Air Force during Vietnam.
He was a self-employed chiropractor in Portsmouth and had retired from the New Hampshire Air National Guard.
He was a member of Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion in Portsmouth; a member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth; a member of National Rifle Association (NRA); an avid ATV rider; and loved to travel.
He was a direct descendent of the Smith and White families that came to America on the Mayflower.
He was the husband of Pat (Parker) White for 41 1/2 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Philip White of Strafford, William "Bubba" White and his wife, Donna, of Strafford, Donald White of Haverhill, and Glenn Thurlow of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; grandsons, Cody and William White of Strafford; several other grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Rex White, in 1976.
Helen D. Devereux
PORTSMOUTH - Helen Duncan Devereux, 93, of Honolulu, Hawaii, died Jan. 19, 2000, in Honolulu.
Born Feb. 17, 1906, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Arthur Bailey and Harriet Hawley Duncan. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School in 1924 and Lasell College in 1926. She was a staff writer for the Portsmouth Herald from 1939 to 1941. She began her civil service career in 1941 for the Industrial Relations for the War Department and in 1944 she transferred to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii where she spent her career until she retired in 1965.
Her love for travel took her all over the globe and she remained an active traveler until her passing.
She was married for 33 years to Leroy Devereux who died in 1985.
She is survived by two nieces, Mary Louise Callas of Palo Alto, Calif., and Harriet Foltinek of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada; and three nephews, Arthur Paisley of Portland, Albert Paisley of Topsham, and Peter Paisley of Eliot.
She was predeceased by her three sisters, Georgianna Conant, Pricilla Holmes, and Harriet Paisley.
Memorial services were held Feb. 3, 2000, at Central Union Church in Honolulu. Interment will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring.
