Margaret Birkl
HAMPTON - Margaret Birkl, 94, of 61 Mill Road, formerly of Winnacunnet Road, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation for Exeter.
Born Feb. 24, 1906, in Dietersdorf, Germany, she was the daughter of the late John and Theresa (Lang) Mathes.
She immigrated to the United States in 1922 and resided in Queens County and later Nassau County in New York before moving to Hampton in 1975.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and was a member of the Hampton Senior Citizens.
She was the wife of the late Urban Birkl, who died in 1977.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret "Mickey" Wardle and her husband, Arthur, of Hampton; five grandchildren; and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Bernard Birkl; and a grandson, James Wardle.
Anna G. Hodgdon
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Grace (Randall) Hodgdon, 91, of 188 Jones Ave., were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Mr. Graham Alvord officiated.
In attendance were members of the North Congregational Church, Portsmouth.
Burial will be in the Newington Cemetery, Newington, in the spring.
Barbara S. Couture
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara S. (Fogg) Couture, 78, of 51 Bunker Lane, Madbury, were held Saturday at the Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. David S. McCarthy, pastor of the Advent Christian Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Sheila Miller, Pamela Pillar, and Jason Bennington. Janet Green was soloist. Jean Goss was organist.
Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Laconia, N.H., in the spring.
Luke C. McLaughlin
KITTERY - Luke C. McLaughlin, 98, of Cutts Road, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at York Hospital.
Born Aug. 15, 1901, in Stratford, Ontario, he was the son of Luke J. and Cynthia Walters McLaughlin. In 1929, he married Florence Wright McLaughlin in Parry Sound, Ontario.
He was a lifetime employee of the Canadian National Railways, starting as a call boy in Depot Harbor, Ontario, in 1916, at the age of 15. He retired as a Hostler-Fireman at the age of 65 in Island Pond, Vt.
Upon the death of his wife in 1981, he moved to Kittery to live with his son, Kenneth.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth L. McLaughlin of Kittery; a daughter, Mavis Fortin of East Bethel, Vt.; two granddaughters, Beth Karlen of East Bethel, Vt. and Kandice Culver of West Lebanon, N.H.; and four great-grandchildren.
Philip B. Mitchell
NEWMARKET - Philip B. Mitchell, 88, of Bald Hill Road, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his home in Newmarket, after a three-month period of illness.
Born March 27, 1911, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Robert D. and Winifred (Burley) Mitchell. He had lived in Newmarket for 78 years. He attended Boston University.
He was a production manager at Kingston-Warren Corp., in Newfields, where he worked for 22 years and from where he retired in 1981. He had previously been employed as a supervisor at Pioneer Mfg. Co. in Newmarket.
He was active with the Boy Scouts of America and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
He was a member of Rising Star Lodge No. 47 F&AM in Newmarket.
An active member of the Newmarket Community Church, he was a former moderator and deacon. For many years, he has visited patients at hospitals and nursing homes.
He was the husband of Helen (Simpson) Mitchell.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Philip Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Newmarket, Robert D. Mitchell and his wife, Valerie, of Newmarket, and Alan S. Mitchell and his wife, Melissa, of Derry; two daughters, Susan Noseworthy and her husband, Gary, of Newmarket, and Judith Mitchell of Newmarket; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Dorna M. Eddy of Duxbury, Ma; two nieces and two nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Bloom.
Gerald T. Woods
HAMPTON - Gerald T. Woods, 74, of Dunvegan Woods, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at his home, after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Mary (Corliss) Woods.
Born Feb. 17, 1926, he was a native of Hartford, Conn., and the son of the late Fred and Florence (Doyle) Woods.
He was a member of the Hartford Fire Department for 18 years. He was well known as a real estate agent and later in the selling of heating and air-conditioning systems. At the time of his retirement in 1992, he was the sales representative for Daniels Oil Co. in Portland, Conn.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, being one of the original crew members of the USS Missouri. He served on "The Mighty Mo" from the time of her commissioning in 1944 until 1946. He would witness the signing of the Japanese surrender on the Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945.
He was a charter member of the USS Missouri Association, a member of the Hampton American Legion Post No. 35 and a member of the Seacoast Art Association. Many of his paintings were often on display in the Exeter-Hampton area.
Besides his wife of 30 years, he is survived by two sons, James Woods of Wallingford, Conn., and Richard Woods of West Hartford, Conn.; two daughters, Nancy Kunak of West Hartford, and Janet Bourbeau of Andover, Conn.; one brother, Donald Woods of Old Lyme, Conn.; and six grandchildren.
He was brother of the late James Woods, killed in World War II, and his late twin brother, Jerome Woods.
Barbara J. Colman
DOVER - Barbara Jean Colman, 43, of Dover, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2000, in Dover.
Born May 1, 1956, in Abington, Pa., she was the daughter of Joseph F. and Jean (Auch) Shaw.
She was a resident of the Dover area since 1985.
She owned and operated "Barb's Tasteful Helps." Her interests were cooking and entertaining.
She was active in church affairs; loved the outdoors, skiing, biking and hiking.
She was also a teacher's aid in the Newmarket schools.
Survivors include her mother of Orr's Island, Maine; a brother, David Shaw of New Hope, Pa.; a sister, Carol Shaw of Hope, Maine; a niece and a nephew.
Harry L. Carville
YORK - Harry Linwood Carville, 95, of 124 Old Post Road, York, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at York Hospital.
Born July 5, 1904, in Lisbon, Maine, he was the son of Harry and Elizabeth (Hoyle) Carville. He lived in Lisbon from 1904 to 1927, where he attended school.
From 1926 to 1939 he worked as a machinist for the Andrews Machine Shop in Auburn. In 1939, he moved his family to York and was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until 1946. At this time he went to work for Blaisdell Chevrolet in York, where he became a highly respected mechanic. In 1950, he returned to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and became an estimator and planner for the construction of subMarines. He was recognized several times during his career for his development of innovative engineering procedures that have become standard in submarine production.
He welcomed retirement in 1966, when at last he could devote time to maintaining his beloved garden from which he proudly shared its remarkable bounty and his gardening expertise with friends and family alike. His other interests included woodworking, hunting and fishing.
He was a 50-year member of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge No. 198 of York.
He was predeceased by Katherine (McGorman), his wife of 65 years, in 1992; three brothers, Willard, Clarence and Lester Carville; and one sister, Gertrude Pillsbury.
He is survived by a son, Linwood Carville and his wife, Jean, of Orono, Maine; one daughter, Eleanor Todd of Cape Neddick; six sisters, Eva Pillsbury and Florence Brewer, both of Lisbon Falls, Ruth Berry of Litchfield, Maine, Dorothy Walker of Sabattus, Maine, Geneva Hartford and Edna Foote, both of Lewiston, Maine; and one brother, Albert Carville of Lisbon.
He was a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren, Douglas Carville and his wife, Karen, and their children, Christopher and Brian of Augusta, Maine; Deborah Welton and her husband, Richard, of Boston; Glenn and Peggy Todd and their children, Aaron, Shannon and Colby, of York; Melinda Gallagher and her husband, David, and their children, Stephanie and Michael of York. He was also a devoted neighbor to his good friends Glen and Linda Masella and their children, T.J. and Andy.
Blanche M. Plouffe
KENSINGTON - Blanche M. Plouffe, 84, of Haverhill Road died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare after a period of failing health.
Born March 23, 1915, in Haverhill, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Delia (Bernard) Gallant. She had lived in Kensington until 1994.
She worked several years in the cafeteria at Phillips Exeter Academy. She was a former shoe-worker in Haverhill and Exeter shoe factories, in addition to PEA. Her hobbies were sewing and cooking for her family. She had resided at Exeter Healthcare since 1994.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne (Theresa) Raymond of Exeter; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hector J. Plouffe, who died Jan. 4, 1977, and a son, Philip Plouffe, who died Feb. 14, 2000.
Edith E. LeBoeuf
ATHOLVILLE, New Brunswick, Canada - Edith Elizabeth (Jobin) LeBoeuf, 71, died Feb. 26, 2000, at Campbellton Regional Hospital in Campbellton, New Brunswick.
Born June 25, 1928, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of Arthur A. Jobin and Edith Rivette.
She left Manchester in 1960 with her husband, Clarence Owen, moving to Chester, N.H. She also lived in Portsmouth, working for the Portsmouth Police Auxiliary. After marrying John LeBoeuf in 1970, they moved to Nashville, Tenn., for 12 years and then retired to Canada 17 years ago.
She was a member of the choir at Saint Ann's Church in Restigouche, Quebec, and a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary Branch No. 19 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
In addition to her husband, John LeBoeuf, of Atholville, she is survived by one daughter, Brenda (Owen) Hathaway of Chester; a granddaughter, Cathie Stanley of Derry; a grandson, James Hathaway, of Chester; one sister, Eleanor Harden of Hooksett, N.H.; nine brothers, Peter, Charles, Albert, Perley and William Jobin of Manchester, Paul Jobin of Chicago, Ill., Edward Jobin of Glidden, Wis., Robert Jobin of Mesa, Ariz., and Henry Jobin of Glendale, Ariz.; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Hannon of Manchester, and a brother, Arthur Jobin of Hazlet, N.J.
Helen M. Livingston
EXETER - Funeral services for Helen M. Livingston were held Monday from the Brewitt Funeral Home in Exeter, with pastor Marc B. Drouin saying prayers. A Mass of Christian burial followed at St. Michael's Church, with the Rev. John Mazzei officiating. He was assisted by Joseph Latour doing readings, and Thaddeus E. Klemarczyk and Glenn Russell.
Organist was Chris Vallone and a special tribute was read by Pat Parnell of the Pastoral Council.
Bearers were all grandchildren of Mrs. Livingston: Robert, Michael, and Deborah Livingston and Ronald Kenyon. Burial will be held in the spring at the Atkinson Cemetery in Atkinson.
Linda M. Condon
EXETER - Linda M. (McDonald) Condon, 47, of 7 Cogger St., Hampton, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital. She was the wife of the late Theodore Joseph Condon.
Born in Beverly, Mass., May 1, 1952, she was the daughter of Mary (Smullen) McDonald of Hampton, and the late John "Scotty" McDonald who died Dec. 8, 1997.
She had worked as a nurse's aid at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass., for many years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Travis Condon of Greenland, and Casey Elliott of Hampton; one sister, Karen McDonald of Hampton; two grandchildren, Kayla and Tyler Condon both of Greenland; one niece, Tasha Kastanko, and a nephew, Justin Kastanko, both of Hampton; and her dear companion of 17 years, Spencer Jones of Hampton.
Doris E. Shupe
DOVER - Doris E. Shupe, 71, of 36 Old Rochester Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her residence after a period of failing health.
Born in Dover on July 8, 1928, she was the daughter of Melvin R. and Winnie L. (Abbott) Bennett.
Self-employed, she owned and operated Doris Ceramics Studio at her residence for the past 26 years, she also worked for the Dover High School school lunch program for 13 years.
She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Dover.
She was the wife of the late Vernon Kenneth Shupe. He died in 1990.
Survivors include one son, Lawrence Bennett of Nashua; two stepdaughters, Judith Ellis and family of Greenland, and Carolyn Feehley and family of Portsmouth; one sister, Evelyn Tibbets of Dover.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Ellis and Elizabeth Ellis, and a son, Stephen P. Shupe who died in 1974.
Barbara S. Couture
MADBURY - Barbara S. (Fogg) Couture, 78, of 51 Bunker Lane, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her home.
Born in New Hampton, on Nov. 27, 1921, she was the daughter of Herman H. and Sybil (Mudgett) Fogg.
She was a 1940 graduate of Laconia High School and had attended the Advent Christian Church in Portsmouth/
She was the wife of the late Henry Couture Sr.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheila Bennington of Madbury; one son, Henry Couture Jr., of Berwick; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine McKenna of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.
Richard T. Ellis
Richard T. Ellis, the infant son of Timothy M. and Jennifer L. (Wirick) Ellis, died Feb. 25, 2000. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Advent Christian Church of Eliot, 86 Pleasant St., South Eliot. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.
