Donald Larnard

AMESBURY, Mass. - Donald "Red" Larnard, 68, formerly of Lonvale Lane, passed away Saturday evening, March 4, 2000, at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.

Born March 23, 1931, in Amesbury, he was the son of the late Frederick and Bessie (Roche) Larnard. He was the husband of the late Josephine (Cavalieri) Larnard, who passed away in 1998.

A lifelong resident of Amesbury, he was a graduate of Amesbury High School, the class of 1948. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the Air Force. He had been employed for many years as a quality control manager at Berkshire Manufacturing in Newburyport. He was a member of the Amesbury VFW and the Polish Club.

He was the husband of the late Josephine (Cavalieri) Larnard, who died in 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Donald Larnard Jr. of Hampton Falls; and Richard and Raymond Larnard, both of Amesbury; three daughters, Nancy Lavoie and Linda Larnard, both of Amesbury, and Joanna Lucas of North Reading, Mass; two brothers, Robert Larnard of Florida and Frederick Larnard of Newburyport; four grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley Lavoie and Jonathan and Jeffrey Larnard.

Helene D. Grimes

PORTSMOUTH - Helene D. "Doris" (Maloney) Grimes, 86, the widow of Edward H. Grimes of Portsmouth, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a short illness.

Born Sept. 8, 1913, in Dover, she was one of 14 children of Michael J. and Elizabeth (Sutherland) Maloney. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Dover.

She was employed as an executive secretary at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and for the Social Security Administration, retiring July 20, 1970.

She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth and Senior Citizens of Portsmouth.

Survivors include her brother, Joseph L. Maloney and his wife, Angie, of Dover; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dorothy M. Tuttle

LEE - Dorothy M. Tuttle, 79, of Wednesday Hill Road, Lee, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover, after a brief period of illness.

Born Jan. 19, 1921, in Bridgeport, Conn., she was the daughter of Herbert W. and Hazel (Mueller) Meyer. She had lived in Lee since 1984.

Raised in Dover, she was a graduate of Dover High School. In 1943, she received her bachelor's degree in biology from the University of New Hampshire, and in 1947 her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, N.Y. In 1973, she received her master's degree in public health from the University of Texas School of Health, Houston, and then joined the faculty there.

She taught microbiology for many years at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C.

She loved woodcarving, and for several years, traveled to Concord every Wednesday for lessons. She also enjoyed gardening and reading.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Robert L. Tuttle of Lee.

Other survivors include a sister, Arlene Vartko of York; and a brother, Herbert Meyer of Kittery.

Katherine M. Webster

WEBSTER - Katherine M. Webster, formerly of Hampton Falls and Kensington, died Friday, March 3, 2000. Services will be held at the First Congregational Church, Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, at 1 p.m. Saturday. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the East Sebago Library, East Sebago, ME 04029, or Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

William E. Foss

EXETER - William E. Foss, 83, of Exeter, died at his home Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000.

He was native of Burlington, Vt., and a graduate of Burlington High School. He was the son of John and Lydia Foss.

He served in the Army during World War II, and continued service in the Army Reserve following active duty, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Burlington for more than 30 years.

Upon retirement, he relocated to Hampton and then to Exeter.

He was the husband of Barbara Taylor Foss.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Edwin J. Foss of Crawfordsville, Ind.; two daughters, Phyllis Dubie Schindo of Burlington and Bluffton, S.C., and Shirley Polworth of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Ruth Medlar Smith of Burlington; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned.

Claire H. Dill

ISLAND POND, Vt. - Claire Hebard Dill, 75, of 92 Derby St., Island Pond, Vt., beloved wife of Attorney Richard E. Dill, attorney at law, died suddenly Saturday, March 4, 2000, in Newport.

Born March 23, 1924, in Ashfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Emory Blodgett and Maude (Gilderdale) Hebard. On June 6, 1953, she married Richard Eden Dill, who survives her.

She received an associate's degree in teaching at Castleton Teachers College and later received a nursing degree at the Springfield Teaching Hospital in Springfield, Mass., where she was a registered nurse and retired from there in 1952. She was also a part-time nurse for various hospitals from 1952 to 1970, and she also assisted her husband, Richard, at his law firm as a part-time secretary from 1970 to 1999.

She held memberships with Graffort Club of Professional Woman's Organization in Portsmouth, United Church of Christ in North Hampton, 4-H Club in Rockingham County, and volunteered for the American Red Cross. She enjoyed working on the family genealogy, sewing, knitting, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Richard E. Dill, she is survived by her children, Charlton R. Dill and his wife, Lisa, of Lee; Lauren C. Dill of Littleton, N.H., Melinda J. Birch and her husband, Scott, of Derby, Vt.; and by her grandchildren, Alden, Carl, Mark Dill, Andrew and Jared Birch; a brother, Roswell Hebard of South Royalton, Vt.; two sisters, Alice Lively of Greenfield, Mass.; and Janet Blankenship of Denver; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her infant son, Norman McConnell Dill.

Wendell P. Clare Jr.

EXETER - Wendell Phillips Clare Jr., 79, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, after a brief period of illness.

Born Jan. 26, 1921, in Greenland, he was the son of Wendell P. and Ruth (Lord) Clare Sr.

He was a 1939 graduate of Portsmouth High School and was a cum laude graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he was a member of the Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.

He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving for five years.

He was a member of the board of directors, vice president of finance, secretary and treasurer of Nichols, Inc., of Exeter, Nichols Southeast Inc., and Granja Nichols de Cuba, S.A., and was a trustee of the Nichols Foundation.

He was a member of North Congregational Church of Portsmouth, where he served as chairman of the Board of Wardens, the Building Committee, and the Building Fund, and was a member of the board of trustees.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Masonic Lodge, Portsmouth; a member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club; a director of the Portsmouth Rehabilitation Center; and a director of the Smaller Business Association of New England. He served on the national board of field advisers for the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C.

He was a former member of Central Congregational Church in Providence, R.I., where he served as a member of the Board of Deacons and was chairman of the Prudential Committee and Buildings and Grounds Committee. While residing in Rhode Island, he served as financial vice president and as a member of the board of directors of an oil consortium based in Providence, retiring in 1986. He was also a governor of Rhode Island Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marion Hodgdon Clare of Exeter.

Other survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Lee-lee and John Schlegel of Virginia, and Wendy and Morton Kirsch of California; a son and his wife, Wendell P. "Bud" Clare III and Penny Robbins of Lee; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Steven N. Champagne

NORTH HAMPTON - Steven N. Champagne, 56, of 44 South Road, North Hampton, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at his home.

Born in Concord, N.H. on April 3, 1943, he was the son of Yvonne (Simard) Champagne of Portsmouth, and the late Norman J. Champagne. Raised in Portsmouth, he had resided in North Hampton for the past 15 years.

He worked from 1988 until recently as a product and manufacturing engineer for the automotive parts division of the Textron Corporation in Farmington. He had previously worked a year for Kingston Warren in Newfields and nine years for the Bailey Corporation in Seabrook.

He was a 1961 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed NASCAR racing and team sports.

In addition to his mother, family members include his companion of 15 years, Pauline St. Armand of North Hampton; two sons, Michael Champagne and Joseph Champagne, both of Dover; two daughters, Cathe Gobron of Lee, and Julie Bolduc of Hudson, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Valerie Hill of North Hampton; five grandchildren; and several aunts and uncles.

Robert W. Pierce Sr.

PORTSMOUTH - Robert W. Pierce Sr., 55, of Madison Street, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at his residence following a lengthy period of illness.

Born in Kittery, he was the son of William E. and Evelyn M. Junkins Pierce. He attended Kittery schools.

He worked in the Highway Department for Kittery for eight years. He later drove tractor-trailers for Leaseway Transportation of Portsmouth, where he was employed for 25 years. He most recently worked for Allard's Moving Co. in Newington.

He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two sons, Robert W. Pierce Jr. of Portsmouth, and Allen D. Pierce of Kittery; five sisters, Carolyn Leavitt of Kittery, Beverly Webster of Kittery, Brenda Lawrence of Kittery, Marilyn Collins of Kittery Point, and Donna Johnson of York; two grandchildren, Alexia N. Pierce of Greensboro, N.C., and Brent A. Labreck of Dover; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Beckert.

Neil R. Bachelder

YORK BEACH - Neil R. Bachelder, 72, of 86 Broadway, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, after a brief period of illness.

Born Sept. 28, 1927, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of Charles C. and Madeline (Leavitt) Bachelder. He was a 1945 graduate of Medford Trade School. He served in the Navy in World War II.

He had been a tool engineer at Hewlett Packard in Andover, Mass., for 48 years.

He had resided in Wakefield, Mass., for 34 years and had summered in York Beach before moving there full time in 1995.

He enjoyed working in his yard and gardening, and was a volunteer at the Yorks Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was the husband of Jeanne (Hayes) Bachelder for 51 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Kevin Bachelder of South Berwick, and James R. Bachelder of Tacoma, Wash.; three daughters, Karen A. Bachelder of Wakefield, Mass., Donna M. Bachelder of Palmyra, N.Y., and Susan St. Martin of Medford, Ore.; a brother, Donald Schultz of Hagerman, Idaho; a sister, Sally Habeeb of Malden, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Katherine M. Webster

EAST SEBAGO LAKE, Maine - Katherine M. Webster, 87, of Webster Way, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

Born Dec. 1, 1912, in Hampton Falls, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Georgia (Connor) Cram.

She was a graduate of Hampton Academy and the School of Fine Arts in Boston.

She worked in admitting at Exeter Hospital and later as a secretary at the Prescott Insurance Agency in Exeter.

She resided in Hampton Falls until moving to Kensington in 1942, where she resided until moving to East Sebago in 1983.

She was a member of the Sebago Center Community Church, a volunteer at the East Sebago Library, and a former trustee of the Kensington Library. She enjoyed gardening and reading.

She was the wife of the late Cleveland A. Webster, who died in 1996.

Survivors include five nieces, two nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, many great-great-nieces and nephews, and a stepdaughter.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Cram, and a sister, Lucy Blodgett.
