Patricia I. Rodriguez
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Patricia Iris Colman (Kyle) Rodriguez, 72, wife of Luz Rodriguez Jr., of 229 Willard Ave., died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Stranraer, Scotland, on November 24, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Gregory and Georgina (Miller) Kyle. She attended local schools in Stranraer.
She served in the British Army and had worked in the housekeeping department at Pease Air Force Base.
Besides her husband survivors include three daughters, Carol Ann Kyle Rodriguez, Georgina Kyle Rodriguez-LaPage, and Sandra Miller Rodriguez all of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Nicole Kyle Nickerson, Christian Tennyson LaPage, and Wyatt Branford LaPage all of Portsmouth; four siblings, James Kyle, William Kyle, George Kyle, and May Eddington all of Scotland.
She was predeceased by five siblings, Georgina Moore, Agnes Scobie, Gregory Kyle, John Kyle, and David Kyle.
Henry E. Kurtenbach
ELIOT _ Henry Eric Kurtenbach, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, after a two-year battle with cancer.
There will be no formal service. Thank you to all our friends and family members who sent their blessings throughout the past two years. Words cannot express our appreciation.
Wendell Dowd
KITTERY POINT - Wendell Dowd, 59, of Gerrish Island, wife of John Dowd, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at York Hospital.
Born in Mineola, N.Y., she was a daughter of Laurence and Dorothy (Cray) Harter.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point.
In addition to her husband, survivors include by two sons, Maj. John Dowd and his wife Donna, of Hanau, Germany, and Thomas Dowd of Kittery Point; six daughters, Christa Winslow and her husband, David, of Binghamton, N.Y., Jennifer Gallo and her husband, Philip, of Watermill, N.Y., Wendy Young and her husband Douglas, Clearwater, Fla., Meghan Silva and her husband, Luis, of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Jessica Dowd of Kittery Point, and Abigail Dowd, Kittery Point; 24 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Benjamin, in 1989.
Edna Dearborn
BANGOR - Edna Dearborn, 91, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at a Bangor health-care center.
Born in Bangor July 22, 1908, she was the daughter of Carl N. and Alice B. Dearborn.
She attended Bangor schools and graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1926, and Farmington Normal School, Class of 1928.
She taught in the South Brooks Rural School and at Stockton Springs in 1929 and 1930. After that, she was employed as head of the book department at Freese's Department Store for several years. She then attended Gorham Normal School and received her degree in 1942. She taught second grade for two years in Rye, N.H., then moved to Portsmouth and taught second grade for 28 years, retiring in 1973, when she returned to Bangor.
While in New Hampshire, she was very active in the Portsmouth Methodist Church as a choir member, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Women's Society. After she returned to Bangor, she sang in several church and community choruses, including St. John's Episcopal and Bangor First Methodist. She was also very active in several women's clubs and church groups, having served as president of the Norumbega Club, Penobscot Retired Teachers Club, Bethany Circle of King's Daughters, and president of the State King's Daughters; as well as being a member of the Bangor Women's Club and the NcX. Her church affiliations included Piburn Circle and United Methodist Women. She was a life member of Tuscan Chapter No. 148 OES of Bangor and held several offices.
Surviving are a nephew, Alan C. Wright of Mansfield, Conn.; brother-in-law, Frank H. Wright of South Portland; two grandnieces, Dr. Kathryn Wright of Raleigh, N.C., and Marlena Apostolatos of Greece.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Brookings-Smith, with the Rev. Dr. Randall Chretien, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex St., Bangor 04401. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Steven N. Champagne
NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Steven N. Champagne, 56, of 44 South Road, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home in Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Saint Theresa Church in Rye Beach.
The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was celebrant. Salvatore DiVincenzo was acolyte. Judith Kish was organist and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. The pall was placed on the casket by Michael Champagne, Joseph Champagne, Cathe Gobron, Julie Bolduc, Valerie Hill and Pauline St. Amand. The readings and Prayer of the Faithful were offered by Michael Champagne, Wendy Champagne and Michelle Champagne. The gifts were presented to the altar by Pauline St. Amand and Joseph Champagne. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with committal prayers offered by Father Lavigne. Bearers were Jimmy Dee, Kevin Sheehan, John Hart and James Hart.
Dorothy M. Harrington
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy M. (Pitman) Harrington, 88, of 713 Sagamore Ave., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with services at the North Congregational Memorial Chapel.
The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by son, Charles M. Harrington, and Rev. Shippee. Helen Weeks was the organist.
In attendance were members of the church; The North Church Women; and representatives from Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star.
Burial was in the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, with committal services by Rev. Shippee.
Bearers were Bob Fennerty, Gregg Varrell, Scott Harrington and Brian Poor.
Order of Eastern Star services were held at Buckminster Chapel on Wednesday evening by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 including Worthy Matron, Cathy Brown; Worthy Patron, Craig Grown, Master of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM; Martha, Priscilla E. Poor; Adah, Edith L. Lovering, PM; Chaplain, Martha Petruzzi, PM; Ruth, Elizabeth Eckhart; Ester, Anne Goodwin; and Electa, Phylis Lufkin.
Dr. Alexander W. Magocsi
YORK - Dr. Alexander W. Magocsi, 83, of 51 Seabury Road, York, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at his home, after a long period of illness.
Born June 14, 1916 in New York City, he was the son of Stephen and Anna (Gross) Magocsi. He attended local PS 122 and graduated in 1933 from Bryant High School. He furthered his education graduating with a BA from Columbia College in 1937 and from Long Island College of Medicine in 1941. He served his residency at Long Island College Hospital and was a Fellow in Anesthesiology.
Dr. Magocsi was married to his beloved wife, Helen Kirchgraber, on July 5, 1941. Soon after, he was called to active duty serving his country in the Army. Overseas he was assigned to the 63rd Tank Destroyer Battalion and 2nd Ranger Battalion.
After returning from the war, he settled in York and became one of only two local physicians at the time. He was instrumental in the progress of York Hospital. He was fondly remembered by friends, "As York Hospital" and gave his all to keep it going.
He was also a founder and a board member of The York Volunteer Ambulance Association. He served his community as the school physician for many years and was a member of the York School Board. His service was far-reaching as a member of Rotary International, in the York Club, a strong supporter of Save our Children Foundation and Habitat for Humanity. He was also a charter member of American Museum for Indians. He also served as a member of York County Medical Society and a medical examiner for the State of Maine.
He was also a regular contributor to the York Weekly as the author of "A Biased View," a column regularly enjoyed by all. He was a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club. He will be remembered as York's family physician for more than 50 years, a loving husband, father and friend.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Magocsi, of York; sons Alexander Magocsi Jr. and his wife Roswitha, of York; Robert M. Magocsi and wife Laura, of Moody, Maine; daughters Marianne Pei and husband T'ing of New York; and Joanne Hepp and husband Paul, of Ohio; grandchildren Marc Hepp of York, Alyssa Pei of California, Boris Magocsi of Berlin, Germany; Stephen Pei of New York, Laura Hepp of Ohio and Jotham Magocsi of Moody, Maine.
He was predeceased by a son, Stephen F. Magocsi, in 1977.
Margaret Birkl
HAMPTON - The funeral for Margaret Birkl, 94, of 61 Mill Road, Hampton, was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Richard Wegman, pastor of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Alton, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Walter Jalbert was soloist.
Acolytes were George Brown, Edward Wakeen and Thomas Gillick.
The readings were offered by Sister Doris Ouellette, C.S.C. and Sister Theresa Malouin, C.S.C. Cremation followed in the Phoenix Crematory. The Rite of Committal was conducted Wednesday in the High Street Cemetery by the Rev. George E. Ham, pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.
Marion L. Dodds
BARRINGTON - Marion L. Dodds, 83, of Route 9, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at the Pond View in Barrington.
Born Dec. 3, 1916, in Waltham, Mass., she was the daughter of Francis and Marion (Hunger) Lyden.
She had lived in Barrington since August of 1999, moving from Exeter.
She was the former owner and operator of the Auburn Street Greenhouse in Exeter.
She enjoyed raising African violets as well as knitting for her family and friends.
She was the wife of the late John A. Dodds. He died in 1997.
Surviving members of the family include: two daughters: Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) Drew and Mrs. David (Laurie) Jacobs, both of Milton; two sons, David D. and his wife Marlys Joos of Coronado, Calif., and Victor J. and his wife Annie Joos of Milton; one sister, Eleanor Morrison of Naples, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and, several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons: Peter D. Joos in 1990 who was living in Phoenix at the time and Dennis L. Joos in 1997 who was living in Colebrook at the time.
Sandra R. Philbrick
KINGSTON - Sandra R. Philbrick, 58, of 27 Church St., the founder and owner of the Pond View Restaurant on Route 125, Kingston, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at her home.
A resident of the town for most of the last 25 years, she was born in Cambridge, Mass., and raised in North Hampton.
She attended Portsmouth High School and the nurse's training program at Essex Agricultural and Technical School in Hawthorne, Mass. She worked first as a registered nurse in the operating rooms at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Lawrence General Hospital and Exeter Hospital. She also worked in several nursing homes in the Newburyport area.
She opened the Pond View Restaurant in 1975 on Route 125 in Kingston and expanded the business several times over the years.
She enjoyed shopping for antiques, which she displayed in several of the rooms at the restaurant. The restaurant is still owned and operated by her daughters and family.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda (Ireland) Millett and her husband John Millett, and Christine (Ireland) Barnum and Larry Barnum, all of Kingston; a brother, Herbert A. Philbrick Jr. of Claremont; four sisters, Constance Smith of Prince Edward Island, Dale Clark of Shelter Island, N.Y., Brenda Vigneault of Claremont and Lesley Draper of Hampton; a longtime friend and companion, Robert Cronin of Newburyport; five grandchildren; one aunt; one uncle; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Wai Kam Yung
YUNG - Wai Kam Yung of Dover, beloved wife of Joe Ngin Yung, devoted mother of Webster Yung of Portsmouth and Chester, Lesley and Kimberly Yung, all of Dover, died Monday, March 6, 2000.
A Buddhist ceremony will be held at noon Friday in the Wing Lok Chapel at Wing Fook Funeral Home, 13 Gerard Street, Boston, with the procession leaving from the funeral home at 1 p.m. Visiting hours are from 6-9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston.
Edwin M. Lord
RYE - Edwin Moor Lord, M.D., 81, of 327 South Road, Rye, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a lengthy period of illness.
Born May 21, 1918, in Waterville, Maine, he was the son of Dr. Maurice Edwin and Mary L. (Moor) Lord.
He was raised in Skowhegan, Maine, and attended the University of Maine at Orono, receiving a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1940, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
He received his degree in medicine from Tufts Medical School in Boston in 1943. An internship was done at Newton Hospital in Newton, Mass., completed in October of 1944.
He was a veteran of World War II and served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps from October 1944 to December 1946, and also served in Korea. He received the Army Commendation Ribbon for Meritorious Achievement upon his discharge.
His residencies in medicine were done at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, R.I., and at Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston, Maine, from 1946 to 1948. For a few years, he practiced medicine in Skowhegan, and was a founding father of the Redington-Fairview General Hospital in that town.
In 1963, he received his diploma in anesthesiology from Maine Medical Center in Portland, and became a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists. He worked briefly in Rumford, Maine, and Franklin, N.H. before joining the medical staff at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. During his tenure at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, he served as chief of anesthesia and was instrumental in the expansion of that department.
He enjoyed his profession and was a favorite among his peers and all hospital employees. He was a member of the Strafford Medical Society and the New Hampshire Medical Association. During his life, he enjoyed playing the piano and dabbled with artwork. His favorite pastimes in later years were reading, visiting with family and friends and playing poker. His gentleness and humor will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly A. (Nokes) Lord of Rye.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Toby Lord of South Portland, and Robert Lord of Skowhegan; a daughter, Stephanie Lord of Skowhegan; a brother, Robert Lord and his wife, Annie, of Collinsville, Conn.; an aunt, Evelyn Jackson of Waterville; two cousins, Marjorie Jackson of Waterville, and Virginia Moor Loynds and her husband, Raymond, of Cumberland, R.I.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Alison, and a sister, Polly Devereaux.
Dorothy M. Harrington
PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy M. (Pitman) Harrington, 88, widow of Marshall P. Harrington, of 713 Sagamore Ave., died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.
She was a member of the North Congregational Church, and a member of the North Church Women.
She was a life member of Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star; a former member of the Parents Music Club; the Portsmouth High School Band Boosters; and had been active with the Boy Scouts of America, and the Girl Scouts of America.
She is survived by a son, Charles M. Harrington, of Enfield, N.H.; a daughter, Susan G. Diehl, of Portsmouth; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four nephews, and a sister, Elsie Prescott, of Greenfield, Mass.
