Robert D. Sawyer
EXETER - Robert D. Sawyer, 49, of 20 Coach Road, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, after a lingering battle with multiple sclerosis.
A native of Winchester, he was the son of Edna (Finethy) Sawyer of Exeter, with whom he resided, and the late Malcolm Sawyer.
He attended schools in Woburn, Lexington and Bedford, Mass.
He was employed at Bentley College in Waltham before moving to New Hampshire 15 years ago.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two brothers, John P. Sawyer of Rye, and William H. Sawyer of Stuart, Fla.; five nephews; and one niece.
Peter E. Simone
BRENTWOOD - Peter Ernest Simone, 59, died unexpectedly Friday, April 7, 2000, in Naples, Fla., where he was visiting family.
Born Sept. 28, 1940, in New York, he was the son of Michael and Agnes Simone. He was raised in Newton, N.H., and moved to Exeter in the late 1960s.
He was a successful businessman, most recently as the owner of The Car Phone Store in Portsmouth. He also operated Pioneer Form Services and dabbled in buying and selling real estate.
He was a past member of the Exeter Rotary Club, and former president of the Exeter Little League.
He loved to travel, had a passion for Corvettes, and enjoyed carpentry.
A devoted father and grandfather, survivors include his son, Michael Simone of Stratham; his daughter, Christine Simone-Crowell of Newmarket; and a grandson, Brandon. He is also survived by his two brothers, Roger Simone of Chicago, and Roland Simone of Naples, Fla.; as well as his longtime companion, Bobbie Hoffman of Exeter.
Ralph 'Bud' Fowler
SOUTH BERWICK - Ralph "Bud" Fowler, 70, of 68 Vine St. died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H., after a period of failing health.
Born Oct. 19, 1929, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of Ralph and Florence (Schroeder) Fowler. He was educated in Medford schools, Fischer Junior College, Mass. Military Junior College, and graduated from Suffolk University.
He served in the Navy and Army as a second lieutenant and had also served with the National Guard.
He was a member of the Cape Neddick-York American Legion.
He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, where he was also a Eucharistic minister and a CCD instructor.
He was a partner in Nor'east Advertising and operated Fountain Industries.
He was the husband of Marilyn (Morrissey) Fowler of South Berwick for 45 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Bethany Fowler of Williamsburg, Va., Jane Pasi and her husband, Anthony, of Exeter, Tara LeBlanc and her husband, David, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Johanna Fowler of Ogunquit; four grandchildren, Chloe and Jack Pasi, and Sadie and Sophia LeBlanc; and a sister, Nancy Jacobson of Crossville, Tenn.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Betsey Fowler, who died in 1958.
Dorothy Ware
UNION, N.J. - Dorothy (O'Shea) Ware, 91, of Union, N.J., died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Saint Elizabeth's Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth, N.J.
A resident of Union for more than 60 years, she was a retired school teacher for the Union Board of Education for more than 35 years before her retirement.
She was a member of the New Jersey Education Association and The Diamond Circle Club (after teaching 25 years). She graduated from Montclair State University, attended Seton Hall University, and received her master's degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.
She was the wife of the late Wallace Ware.
She was the sister of Helene Furlong, aunt of Dorothy and George Ring, Charles and Brenda Furlong, and Douglas and Maureen Furlong. She is also survived by five great-nieces and nephews.
Cornelius F. Hobbs Sr.
BRADENTON, Fla. - Cornelius F. Hobbs Sr., 73, of 570 57th Ave. West Lot 95, Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Manatee Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 4, 1926, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Carlos and Catherine (Walsh) Hobbs. He resided in Portsmouth for most of his life before moving to Bradenton in 1992.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in Portsmouth.
He was employed as a Portsmouth, N.H., police officer and retired as a general contractor.
He was a bail commissioner and justice of the peace in Portsmouth. He also served several terms in the New Hampshire Legislature.
An avid cribbage player, he also enjoyed fishing and cooking.
He was the husband of Edna (Howe) Hobbs.
In addition to his wife, survivors include eight children, Dennis Hobbs of Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, Cornelius Hobbs Jr. of Rochester, N.H., Timothy Hobbs of York, Stephen Hobbs of Greenland, Thomas Hobbs of Madison, N.H., Patricia Tuley of Dover, N.H., Carlene Helfenstein of Bradenton, Fla., and Sheila Hobbs of South Berwick; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Peter Hobbs of Portsmouth; four sisters, Mary Lebranche of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, Helen Kinch of Portsmouth, Sandra Osborne of East Kingston, and Shirley MacDonald of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Smith, and a brother, Carlos Hobbs.
Irene F. Carini
KITTERY - Irene F. Carini, 91, of Idlewood Lane, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Homestead Nursing Home, Kittery.
Born in Haverhill, Mass., on May 21, 1908, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Parino) Forte, and attended schools in Haverhill.
She was a homemaker.
She was the wife of the late Primo James Carini.
She is survived by a son, James Carini of Portsmouth; a daughter, Rose C. Wallace-Miller of Kittery; a sister, Angelina Gulezia of Haverhill; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers John Forte, Anthony Forte and Nilo Forte; and a sister, Anne Rizzotti.
Myra J. Blaisdell
YORK - Myra J. Blaisdell, 90, of 71 Beech Ridge Road, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at her residence.
Born on Nov. 23, 1909, in Cossayuna, N.Y., in her home, she was the daughter of Arthur and Joseph (Coon) Johnson.
She met her husband, Theodore J. Blaisdell when he was teaching in Arglye, N.Y. and they were married on Dec. 23, 1931.
She had resided in Arglye for 11 years, moving to York in 1940 with her husband and two small children to take care of her mother-in-law Anna Barrell Blaisdell.
She was always very supportive of the community organizations along with the church affairs. She was an active member of the First Parish Church since 1940. She was a member of the Missionary Club, the Women's League, Sunday School Committee, a Sunday school teacher, the Supper Club and was always making items and volunteering to raise funds for the First Parish Church. She was very active in the Eastern Star in New York and Maine. She also supported the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, DeMolay and York's historical events.
For a few summers, she worked at the York Historical Society's Old Gaol as a guide and participated in the re-enactment of Father Moody's Sunday church service at the First Parish Church. She welcomed new teachers into the York school system by helping them adjust to their new surroundings and finding a church for them to associate with.
She was the wife of the late Theodore J. Blaisdell, who died in 1996.
Survivors include two sons, George A. Blaisdell of York, and H. Paul Blaisdell of Towson, Md.; one daughter, Sandra J. Brown of Freeport; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Blaisdell Terry of Springville, Mo., and Kenneth Blaisdell of June Lake, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Marion Johnson of Cossayuna, N.Y.
Ruth N. Gonye
DOVER - Ruth Napier Gonye, 79, of 231 Dover Point Road, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1920, in Andover, Mass., she was the daughter of Floyd and Hattie (Knight) Napier.
She was a Dover resident for over 30 years and was a 1943 graduate of Lowell State College. Her professional career in education spanned 45 years, first as a music teacher in Derry and Somersworth, and later as an elementary school teacher in North Berwick and Portsmouth. She taught from 1958 until her retirement in 1988 at Brackett Elementary School, Pease Air Force Base. She was a member of First Parish Congregational Church in Dover.
She was the wife of the late Richard Gonye, who died in 1988.
Survivors include a son, Stephen Gonye of Cape Neddick; three daughters, Mrs. Katherine Hughes of Mascoutah, Ill., Ms. Susan Gonye of Mashpee, Mass., and Mrs. Sarah Shaheen of Newport, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Margaret Cinotto of Jacksonville, Fla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, David Gonye, in 1989; and her stepson, Richard Gonye Jr., in 1974.
Esther F. Celestino
LARCHMONT, N.Y. - Esther F. Celestino, formerly of York, died Dec. 30, 1999, at the United Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester, N.Y.
Born Nov. 3, 1918, in Rochester, she was the daughter of Herbert and Mildred (Wentworth) Hanson. She was a 1936 graduate of Traip Academy.
Prior to her marriage, she lived in York and had worked as a secretary for Dennett's Candy Store in Portsmouth. After the war, she came to New York where she met and married Gus Celestino.
She worked for over 40 years for the Westchester Jewish Center where she was fondly remembered by generations of students and families.
She traveled to Maine annually for the Traip Academy reunion and to visit the beaches of Maine. As a beach enthusiast, she was a well-known visitor at Harbor Island in Mamaroneck, N.Y. She was also an avid bowler and had participated in many local and national tournaments. She will also be remembered for her dedication to the Mamaroneck Women's Club.
She is was the wife of Gus Celestino.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Perry and his wife, Linda Celestino, of Sydney, Australia, and James and his wife, Susan Celestino, of Mamaroneck; two sisters, Mrs. William (Dorothy) Varrell and Mrs. James (Geraldine) Waddell, both of York Harbor; a brother, Herbert and his wife Nita Hanson Jr. of Zephyrhills, Fla.; five grandchildren, Blake, Jack and Sam Celestino of Australia, and Amanda and Christopher Celestino of Mamaroneck; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held in January in St. John's Lutheran Church in Mamaroneck. Interment will be at a later date in the Wentworth Family Cemetery in Lebanon, Maine.
Virginia E. Smith
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Virginia Eunice Smith, 85, of Jacksonville, N.C., died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville.
Born Sept. 3, 1914, in Brockton, Mass., she was the daughter of James and Eunice Leonard Leighton.
Survivors include two sons, C. Raymond Ladd Jr., of Vero Beach Fla., and Richard Ladd Sr. of Jacksonville, N.C.; two sisters, Janice Wilson of Hampden, Mass., and Sible Mead of Portsmouth; a brother, James Leighton of Randolph, Mass.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, C. Raymond Ladd III.
