Reta May (Welch) Weare

TAMWORTH - Reta May (Welch) Weare, 74, of Tamworth Road, died December 4, 2000, peacefully at home surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Tamworth on July 24, 1926, daughter of the late Russell and Hester (Clark) Welch, she was a lifelong resident of Tamworth.
Predeceased by her husband, Donald E. Weare in 1988, she leaves two sons, Thomas Weare of Tamworth and Michael Weare of Tamworth; three daughters, Judith Kayser of Tamworth, Susan Hayford of Tamworth and Margaret Merrithew of Tamworth; a brother, Frederic Welch of North Fort Meyers, Fla.; four sisters, Margaret Brueckner of Floral Park, Fla., Florence Fortier of Chocorua, Helen Dicey of Chocorua, Beatrice Kondrup of Rochester; 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7 at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home on Route 16 in West Ossipee.
Burial will be in Wonalancet Cemetery in Wonalancet.
The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home of West Ossipee is in charge of arrangements.

Douglas E. Melzard Sr

FREEDOM - Douglas E. Melzard Sr., 88, of West Bay Road, died Dec. 1, 2000, at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee after a period of failing health.
He was born Feb. 26, 1912, in Lynn, Mass., the son of the late Charles E. and Harriet (Quimby) Melzard.
He had lived in Swampscott, Mass., where he graduated from the Swampscott High School in 1930. Later in 1935, he graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering. After graduation, he began working for Lever Bros. in the food and flavor lab in Boston and later worked for Arthur D. Little, during which time he moved to Georgetown, Mass. In 1969, he moved to Freedom, while he worked for Bickmore Products of Hudson, Mass., until his retirement in 1980.
While living in Swampscott, he became a member of the First Congregational Church of Swampscott and in 1971 he became a member of the First Christian Church of Freedom, where he joined the men's club and enjoyed being active in the youth fellowship.
Mr. Melzard enjoyed fishing, water skiing with the children and climbing mountains in New Hampshire. During his earlier years in Massachusetts, he enjoyed tending his lobster pots and selling his lobsters. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox as well as Swampscott High School football. Mr. Melzard also had a special love for his dogs throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lillian E. (Jordan) Melzard of Freedom and Ossipee; his three daughters, Ruth E. Stewart of Georgetown, Mass., Lois F. Day of Castleton, Vt., and Dorothy Ann Melzard of Chester; a son, Douglas E. Melzard Jr. of Mashpee, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Frost of North Conway. He was also predeceased by a brother, Roland Quimby Melzard.
Memorial service will be Sunday, Dec. 17, at the First Christian Church in Freedom. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, N.H. 03894, or the Alzheimer's Association, 919 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 100, Chicago, Ill. 60611-1676.
Lord Funeral Home, Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Buzzell

FRYEBURG, Maine - Donald Buzzell, 80, of Fryeburg, died November 29, 2000, in Maryville, Tenn.
Donald was born in Fryeburg at the family farm where he lived for almost all his life. He was a loved member of the community, and was especially remembered for his role in the organization of the Fryeburg Fair. For over 50 years, he managed the cattle barns and was a trustee of the fair. He was instrumental in the establishment of the calf scramble and the 4H baby beef program. Don was involved in the Oxford County and Maine Farm Bureau, and was a former selectman of Fryeburg.
Don served as a member of the Fryeburg Academy Alumni Board. He was instrumental in the establishment of the North Fryeburg Fire Department and served on the Fryeburg Cemetery Association. He was a 32nd degree mason. Don loved gardening, even after decades of farming, and was an avid fisherman.
Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jo Buzzell of Fryeburg and his daughter, Brenda Hitchcock and grandsons, David and Brian of Maryville, Tenn.; a brother, Ed of Fryeburg and a sister, Mary Pattberg of Bayonet Point, Fla. Many nieces and nephews will miss Don as well.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North Fryeburg Fire Department or the Fryeburg Rescue Squad. A memorial service will be held later this summer.

Frances (Moore) Chapman

CHOCORUA - Frances (Moore) Chapman of Chocorua died Saturday, November 25, 2000, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, two months short of her 94th birthday.
Born January 29, 1907, Franny, the daughter of Frederick and Charlotte (Young) Moore, was born and brought up in Norway, Maine. She married Alexander Hamilton Chapman of Springfield, Mass. in 1925. After living several years in Oklahoma, Alec, a petroleum engineer with Standard Oil, was assigned to Bucharest, Romania, where the Chapmans lived for eight years before being transferred to London, England. During this time they traveled extensively throughout Europe and the near east. They lived there into the war years, being forced to return to America in 1941. Once back in this country, the Chapmans lived in Washington, DC, New York City and for two years, in Portland, Maine, where Alec oversaw the construction of the pipeline from Maine to Montreal.
In 1935, the Chapmans bought land in Chocorua and built a cabin on Page Hill where they spent their holidays. Over the years, Alec made several additions to the original structure, resulting in a striking contemporary residence with a breathtaking view. In 1970, they purchased land in the village next to the Nickerson-Linder House, where they built their retirement home.
A "woman for all seasons," Franny was an avid reader, master gardener, superb cook and poetess. A nature lover, she was a preservationist and lover of animals, especially German shepherds. While in Europe, she visited Fortunate Fields in Switzerland, resulting in breeding and training seeing-eye dogs. While living in Chocorua, she continued this affiliation through Morris Frank in Morristown, N.J. She was a member of the Poetry Society of New England and published a well-received book of poetry in 1966 entitled "Time for Tea".
Franny is survived by a cousin, Marion Smith of Norway, Maine, and numerous nieces and nephews
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private. Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, is in charge of arrangements.

James Clark Heath

WEST PARIS, Maine - James Clark Heath, 43, of West Paris, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 29, 2000. He was born in Lewiston on January 4, 1957, the son of Clayton E. and Helen Tamlander Heath.
He graduated from Oxford Hills High School and Central Maine Technical College on a scholarship from Maine Machine Products. He had been employed with Maine Machine Products for the past 20 years. He enjoyed fishing.
He married Melissa Salls on November 8, 1992. He is survived by his parents, his wife of West Paris; two daughters, Christiana and Sarah, both of West Paris; three sisters, Diana Nadeau of Greenwood, Lauri Roode of Intervale and Melinda Seames of South Paris.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to Gallilee House, 50 Paris Street, Norway, Maine 04268.

Elizabeth A. "Betty" Anderson

ALBANY - Elizabeth A. "Betty" Anderson, 68, of Albany, died Nov. 26, 2000, at her home following a long illness.
Born in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Halvor and Bertha (Kristensen) Arntzen, she lived in South Weymouth, Mass., for many years prior to moving to Albany in 1990.
She had been a pre-school teacher at the Old South Union Church in South Weymouth, Mass., for many years.
The family includes her husband, Richard G. Andersen, of Albany; two sons, Eric B. Andersen, of Pepperell, Mass., and Scott K. Andersen, of Mansfield, Mass.; a daughter, Leslie L. Andersen, of Albany; and a grandson, Alec Andersen, of Pepperell, Mass.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. in the Old South Union Church in South Weymouth, Mass., with the Rev. Terry Martinson, pastor, officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care Services of Northern Carroll County, P.O. Box 432, North Conway, NH 03860.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.

Hans Kurtis "Kurt" Dietterle

BARRINGTON - Hans Kurtis "Kurt" Dietterle, 20, of Mayflower Drive in Barrington, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Wakefield.
Born Oct. 23, 1980, in Dover, Kurt was the only child of Paul H. and Laura Lynn (Oakes) Dietterle Jr.
A ski instructor, he was employed at the Grand Summit Hotel in North Conway and previously at Attitash Bear Peak in Bartlett and Gunstock ski area.
Kurt's greatest passion was skiing. He said he especially enjoyed teaching the middle age group, kids ages 9 to 13, who knew how to ski already, because he could help them master the sport even more.
He was an avid sportsman who loved the outdoors and looked forward to traveling, especially out West, to ski. He was an explorer, looking upon every new day and every new experience with passion.
Kurt had become a passionate reader, always discussing his latest book. He loved his life and the direction it was moving.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, T.J. Robinson; his maternal grandmother, Mary Evelyn Oakes of Barrington; his half-sister, Dusty A. M. Dietterle of Dover; his half-brother, Paul H. "Buzz" Dietterle and his wife Celeste of Newmarket; two step-brothers, David and Timothy Robinson of Barrington; two uncles, Mark Oakes and his wife Heather of Hampton, and Steve Oakes and his wife Dottie of Manchester; four nephews, Paul IV, Bruce, Karl, and Erich Dietterle of Newmarket; and cousins Andrea and Tara Oakes of Manchester. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Everett Oakes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, with Rev. Fritz J. Cerullo, O.S.A. as celebrant. A gathering of friends and family will follow in the parish hall.
A torchlight memorial service and celebration of his life will be held through the heartfelt generosity of Attitash Bear Peak at Ptarmigan's Lounge at the base lodge on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 3:30 p.m.
Those who wish may donate to a trust being established by his parents to provide free use of helmets for skiers at Attitash Bear Peak.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue, Dover.
