Donald G. O'Brien
NORTH HAMPTON - Donald G. O'Brien, founder and president of D.G. O'Brien Inc. of Seabrook, died of cancer on July 15, 2000, at his home in North Hampton. He was 78 years old.
Born July 14, 1922, in Portland, he graduated from Portsmouth High School and served as an electrician's apprentice at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at the start of World War II. He later joined the Army Air Corps, earned a commission as a second lieutenant and served as a B-24 navigator and instructor.
After the war, he attended the University of New Hampshire, where he graduated in 1949 magna cum laude with a degree in electrical engineering. He went on to attend MIT, where he received a master's of science degree in electrical engineering in 1951 while working in the Dynamics and Control Laboratory there. He was also a 1981 graduate of the Owners, Presidents, and Managers Executive Education Program at Harvard Business School.
Following his graduation from MIT, Mr. O'Brien served as senior vice president of engineering for Midwestern Instruments in Tulsa, Okla. In 1957, he returned to Massachusetts and founded his first business, American Measurement and Control, which produced high-performance servo-control valves. In 1962, he founded D.G. O'Brien Inc. in Framingham, Mass. Now located in Seabrook, D.G. O'Brien is an internationally known manufacturer of specialty servo-control devices as well as electrical and optical connectors for use in harsh environments. Products developed and produced by his company have landed on the moon, are found in the fuel controls in thousands of jet engines, have enabled scientists and oil drillers to work safely on the ocean floor, helped discover the Titanic, and have aided in the safe journey of submariners into the depths of the oceans.
Always one to encourage and participate in the advancement of technology in his company, he was the holder of numerous patents and a respected author and speaker in his industry. In 1989 he was presented the Compass Award by the Marine Technology Society for his distinguished service to the ocean community.
He believed strongly in two systems, the free enterprise system and the system of public higher education. He was one of the founding directors of the UNH Foundation, an organization dedicated to creating an endowment to fund education at UNH. As volunteer chairman of the UNH Campaign for Distinction in the Seacoast, Mr. O'Brien wrote:
"Our free enterprise system has created the greatest economic and social system the world has ever seen. Under this system, each of us is free to plan, to grow and to achieve as individuals. This is the greatest truth we must pass on to the new graduates (of UNH) when they join our organizations. Granted they will challenge us. They will ask tough questions. They will force us to find new ways to enunciate our beliefs and to prove the truth of what we have come to accept as faith. We will come to see, however, that some of them are extremely able - in fact better than we are or ever were! These few will be our successors. They will continue to make our system work long after we have run the race. This is the natural process of renewal - as necessary in a viable business as in life itself."
His affection for UNH is evidenced by his service to the university. He served two terms as a president of the Alumni Association and eight years as an alumni-elected trustee of the University System, where he served two years as chairman of the board of trustees. In 1973 he was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. In recognition of his service, he was also awarded the Alumni Meritorious Service Award in 1992. He was also a regular supporter of the Wildcat Winner's Circle and the annual UNH Alumni Golf Tournament.
Mr. O'Brien committed a significant amount of his energy and time to service in organizations he believed in and enjoyed. While living in Wayland, Mass., he served as chairman of the board of trustees of Framingham Union Hospital for seven years, as president of the South Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, as president of Framingham Family Counseling and Guidance Center, as a director of American Association of Industrial Management, and as a director of Shawmut Bank. In 1974 he was honored with the Distinguished Citizenship Award by the Algonquin Council of Boy Scouts of America. A member of Rotary since 1969, he was a charter member of the Seabrook-Hampton Falls Rotary Club and was recently recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Mr. O'Brien was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach, where he served as president for three terms. During his tenure, he spearheaded the purchase of the club by its members in 1984.
He was also an avid fisherman and hunter, and was a member, past president and director of the Blue Mountain Forest Association in Newport, N.H. He had been a winter resident of Jupiter, Fla., since 1980.
