Brook Minarik

DOVER - The number of truly "creative" people we meet in our lives are few and far between. We would all agree, however, that Brooke Minarik, a former piano teacher of Dover, was one of them.

Family, and friends alike, mourn the passing of Brooke on June 1, from a 1 1/2-year struggle with the debilitating disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease). She was 53 years old and stayed in remarkably good spirits and attitude until the very end. She was surrounded with most of her family during her last days - her husband, Charles Millette; her daughter, Zulieka Varnum; and her stepson, Nicholas Millette. Alex Millette, her other stepson, is stationed in Germany and was unable to return. She is also survived by her mother, Else Holmelund Minarik. She died peacefully at their summer home in Canada.

Brooke's flair for life was evident in everything she accomplished. She studied piano both in New York and at the University of New Hampshire. She published "Play & Sing - It's Christmas" (Macmillan Publishing Co.) in 1980. As a piano teacher for 25 years, she touched many lives with her talent, kindness, and good humor.

In the past eight years, she and her husband Charles had a retail shoe store, Footnotes, in Portsmouth. The store grew and thrived as a result of her artistic talents and endless energy.

As one friend wrote, Brooke was filled "with (a) gentle, playful, and exquisitely interesting mind and spirit." Friends and family alike will always remember that spirit and deeply miss her presence.

A remembrance will be held Sunday, July 30, at 118 Locust St. in Dover, 742-0321.
