Josephine Eads Winslow
PORTSMOUTH - Josephine "Jo" Eads (McHenry) Winslow, 93, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.
Born Oct. 1, 1906, in Waltham, Mass., the daughter of John McHenry and Florence (Tarr) Sedgwick, she was raised in Rockport, Mass.
Her father had a drug store in Rockport when she was a small girl, and she spent many years at the McHenry summer home on Pleasant Street.
She was the granddaughter of the late George J. Tarr, for whom the Rockport School was named.
She attended Kendall Hall in Beverly, Mass., and later attended art school in Boston.
She had the first triplets born on Cape Ann: James, Jean and June Lane. A year earlier, she gave birth to Charles L. Lane Jr.
She taught dancing at the Murry Hall in Rockport in the 1930s and 1940s.
Her surviving children are Charles L. Lane Jr., of Rockport, Jean Lane Hyland of Rockport and James Eads Lane of Florida.
She was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Sylvia Brown
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Sylvia (Levine) Brown, 78, of 1001 Colony Point Circle, Pembroke Pines, Fla., were held Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with services held at Temple Israel, Portsmouth. Rabbi David Mark officiated. Words of remembrance were given by her son, Jeffrey Brown and daughter-in-law, Rachel Brown.
In attendance were members of Temple Israel; Hadassah; Women's American ORT; B'nai Brith; and Sisterhood of the temple.
Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.
Bearers were Stephen Gray, Izzy Bratter, Max Salden, Ron Garshaq, Ben Silver, Al Silver and Lonnie Brown.
Edward J. Sherman
NEWMARKET - Mr. Edward J. Sherman, 56, of 251 Ash Swamp Road, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, surrounded by his family at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born Sept. 4, 1943, in Philadelphia, to the late James Sherman and Grace (McDonough) McCurry.
He was the husband of Anne T. (Morse) McCurry for 37 years.
Mr. Sherman worked for the post office for many years and leaves many good friends there.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and was loved and respected by his family.
He is survived by his wife Anne; six children, Edward, Jon, Andrea, and Joseph McCurry of Newmarket, and Robert and Christopher McCurry of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Edward, Justin, Josh, Ryan, Allie and Joey; a sister, Linda Easton of Warrington, Pa.; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews who though the world of him.
Mr. Sherman was predeceased by two sons, Edward James McCurry Jr. and Michael Joseph McCurry, whom he now joins in God's care. He will be forever loved and missed.
SHERMAN - Mr. Edward J. Sherman, 56, of 251 Ash Swamp Road, Newmarket, died Aug. 19, 2000. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
Merton H. Spurr
ELIOT - Merton H. Spurr, 85, longtime resident of Old Road, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in Yarmouth, Maine, following a brief period of illness.
Born July 21, 1915, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, he was the son of Vernon and Edna Hardwick Spurr. He attended Boothbay schools and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School, Class of 1934.
He learned the machinist trade at Saco Lowell Shop in Biddeford, Maine. He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1972 with 20 years of service in his trade.
During World War II, he enlisted with the Army, where he served as a T-4 in the 19th Infantry Service Co.
He was past commander of Eliot Memorial Post No. 188, American Legion; lifelong member of Seaside Masonic Lodge No. 144 AF&AM, in Boothbay Harbor; and a member of the Piscatauqus Order of the Eastern Star No. 90, in Kittery.
He was a member and deacon of the Eliot Congregational Church.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
He was predeceased by his wife, F. Elizabeth Foss Spurr, in 1998.
Survivors include one daughter, Sara E. Hetzel of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; two sisters, Elizabeth Hayes of California, and Eleanor Forbes of Rockland, Maine; three grandchildren, Lisa Perry of Maryland, Teresa Mitchell of Berwick, Maine, and Lee Perry of Augusta, Maine; five great-grandchildren, Ashley-Marie Perry, Alexander Johnson, Aaron Johnson and Danylee Mitchell, all of Berwick, and Jamie Perry of New Gloucester, Maine.
SPURR - Merton H. Spurr, 85, longtime resident of Old Road, Eliot, Maine, died Aug. 19, 2000. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, with the Rev. David Avery officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Visiting Nurse Service, 15 Industrial Park Road, Saco, ME 04072-1851. Arrangements are by Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.
Bertha Young McPheter
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha (Meadors) Young McPheter, 90, of 19A Pearl St., were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. Lt. Scott Flanders of the Salvation Army officiated.
In attendance were members of the Seacoast Community Church, Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6 Auxiliary, Emerson Hovey Post 168, VFW Women's Auxiliary, Pounds of Clowns, Bethel Keenagers and the Aglow Singalong that performs at Edgewood Centre once a month.
Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Barrington, with committal services by Lt. Flanders.
Family members were bearers.
American Legion Auxiliary services were held Friday at the chapel by Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6, including Shirley Williams, president; Betty Sanford, chaplain; Sheila Brooks, first vice president; Brenda Walton, sergeant of arms; Shirley Cadvert, Department 1 vice president; Ella Studrance, past department president; Karyl Horn, treasurer; June Daley, past department president; Gloria Barnes, Debbie Perkins and Sheila VanAlstyne.
Also assisting in services were Color Guard members Patty Peters, Patty Bellivie, Earl Peters, Paul Hollingsworth, Tony Lozada, Earl Pettiford and Eliott Antequerra.
Patricia M. Ezzell
PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Patricia M. (Linchey) Ezzell, 59, of 1142 South Rolla St., Rolla, Mo., were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Pastor Gary Wilkins officiated.
Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth.
Honorary bearers were Steve Lantz, Tim Lantz, Richard Brooks, Gerald DeVault, Jim Linchey, Ray Green, Kevin Linchey and Kenneth Linchey.
Melvin Guy Armstrong Jr.
KENSINGTON - Melvin Guy Armstrong Jr., 75, of 23 North Road, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at his home, following a brief illness.
Born Oct. 21, 1926, in Exeter, he was the son of Melvin G. Armstrong Sr., and Ruth B. McKenna Armstrong.
He graduated from Exeter High School and entered the Navy during World War II.
He was a retired cabinet maker.
He was a member of the Kensington Congregational Church, the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post No. 105, and served several years as the town forest fire warden.
He was the husband of June (Glass) Armstrong for 50 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons and their wives, Melvin G. Armstrong III and Susan of Kensington, and Seth H. Armstrong and Denise of Littleton, N.H.; two daughters, Kathrine and her husband, Frank Nadeau, of Hinsdale, Mass., and Laurie J. Armstrong of Kensington; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Bickford of Kensington, and Margaret Neville of Rye; and nieces and nephews.
ARMSTRONG - Melvin Guy Armstrong Jr., of 23 North Road, died Aug. 19, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, from the Kensington Congregational Church. Burial will follow in The Village Cemetery, Kensington. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. The Kensington Legion will hold services at 6 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home. HERSEY - William J. "Wink" Hersey, 79, of 1761 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, died Aug. 18, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Route One South, Portsmouth. Ann M. Desotelle
FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Ann M. Desotelle, 88, died Aug. 4, 2000, at Indian River Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Born April 23, 1912, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Hannah Sweeney.
She was retired from General Electric Co. in Somersworth.
She was the wife of the late Walter J. Desotelle Sr., who died in 1971.
Survivors include three sons, Walter J. Desotelle Jr. and his wife, Judy, of North Hampton, Paul Desotelle of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Philip Desotelle and his wife, Diane, of Belmont, N.Y.; one daughter, Barbara Weston of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Michael Weston, Mark Desotelle, Susan Winters, Jeffrey Desotelle, Lisa Desotelle and Patrick Desotelle; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Julia Buckley and her husband, Robert, of New Castle; and two nieces, Sheryl and Christine Weston of New Castle.
DESOTELLE - Ann M. Desotelle, 88, of Fort Pierce, Fla., died Aug. 4, 2000. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in her memory to Portsmouth Home Health (Visiting Nurse Association), 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Indian River Cremations Inc., Vero Beach, Fla., provided cremation services.
Bradley P. Pridham
YORK BEACH - Bradley P. Pridham, 67, of Ridge Road, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at York Hospital.
Born Nov. 19, 1932, in Portsmouth, he was the son of William H. and Eleanor (Moore) Pridham and attended Portsmouth High School.
He served in the Navy on the USS Monrovia during the Korean Conflict.
He had been employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 29 years, retiring as a pipe insulator in Shop 07.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 168 of Portsmouth, the American Legion Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 and the Portsmouth Elks Lodge No. 97.
He was predeceased by a brother, William H. Pridham Jr., who died in 1957.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille (Dion) Pridham of York Beach; one daughter, Deborah A. Pridham of Milton, Mass.; a grandson, Michael Pridham of Portland; two stepsons, Michael E. Morin of Poland, Maine, and Thomas R. Morin of Marietta, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Arline Rovnak of York Harbor and Tina L. Desmarais of Mooretown, Vt.; six step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and aunts and cousins.
PRIDHAM - Bradley P. Pridham, 67, of Ridge Road, York Beach, died Aug. 17, 2000. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Family flowers only. William J. Hersey
PORTSMOUTH - William J. "Wink" Hersey, 79, of 1761 Lafayette Road, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a period of failing health.
Born Oct. 12, 1920, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Arthur and Anna (Bailey) Hersey. He grew up in the Puddle Dock neighborhood.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1948 as a corpsman in the North Atlantic and South Pacific and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He was employed as an electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1969. He also worked for the NH-ME Bridge Authority from 1977 to 1987. He was a call fireman for the city of Portsmouth during the '50s and '60s.
A member of St. James Church, he was one of the original ushers there. He was president of the N.H. Chapter of the Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni, member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 4, the USS Kidd Association, and the former Holy Name Society.
An avid outdoorsman, he was also a member of the National Rifle Association and was actively involved in youth sports, especially following his grandchildren's activities. Wink was a regular at Geno's Coffee Shop and enjoyed spending time there, even though he was a Democrat.
He was the husband of the late Mary Elizabeth (Seavey) Hersey who died in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Hersey of Portsmouth; two sons, Lloyd Hersey and his wife, Jacqueline, of Stratham, and Shawn Hersey and his wife, Sandra, of Dover; six grandchildren, Jessica, Shaine, Joshua, Ryan, Sarah and Jeremy; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Justin, in 1985; a sister, Mabel; and six brothers, Jack, Reginald, Donald, Arthur, Francis and Norman Hersey.

Doris Kohn
PORTSMOUTH - Doris (Leech) Kohn, 75, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 6, 1924, in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Paul Nicholas and Esther Olive (Birch) Leech.
She received her bachelor's in political science from the University of New Hampshire.
She was the wife of the late Paul L. Kohn.
Survivors include six children, Kathleen Kohn Schaap of Green Oaks, Ill., John Tyler Kohn of Durham, Jeffrey Lee Kohn of Columbus, Ohio, Peter Carey Kohn of New Milford, Conn., Andrew Craig Kohn of Danbury, Conn., and Thomas Charles Kohn of Fremont, N.H.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, Paul Nicholas Leech Jr. of Northbrook, Ill.
