Shirley C. Woods
ROCHESTER, N.H. - Shirley C. Woods, 73, of 92 Riverview Drive died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at her home, following a brief illness.
Born May 16, 1927, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Mary R. (MacDonald) Caldwell. She had resided in this area most of her life and had worked at Clarostat in Dover, and was a CNA at the nursing home in Brentwood.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Northwood, N.H., and the Grange of Rochester. She enjoyed gardening and handicrafts.
She was the wife of the late William Woods, who died in 1979.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Upton of Rochester, and Doreen Carr of Hampton; four grandchildren, Kellie Melanson of Rochester, Thomas Upton of Dover, and Sarah and Diana Carr, both of Hampton; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Upton of Dover, and Colbie Melanson of Rochester; and two longtime friends, Eileen Caron and Anita Clement.
WOODS - Shirley C. Woods, 73, of 92 Riverview Drive, Rochester, N.H., died Sept. 15, 2000. Family and friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today (Monday), at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in the chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. David Pearson officiating. Burial will be in Nottingham Cemetery, Nottingham, N.H.
Florence T. Camden
KITTERY - Florence T. Camden, 89, formerly of George Street, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Harbor Home in York Harbor.
Born April 24, 1911, in Enfield, Conn., she was the daughter of Edward and Georgiane Deslaurier Obrien and attended local schools.
For more than 62 years she was a resident of Kittery, where she and her husband, Alphie Camden, made their home and raised their family. She was well-known as the owner of the former Wallingford Spa, a local restaurant where she and her family worked. Her enjoyment of people either at the restaurant or at bingo, was only surpassed by her love of her family. Her son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a constant source of enjoyment and love.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1996.
Survivors include her son, Donald Camden and his wife, Jo, of Eliot; grandchildren, Donald Camden Jr. of Kittery, Jack Camden of Kittery, Diane Dicredico of Eliot, Sandra Patrick of Wells and Gail Richardson of South Berwick; a brother, William Obrien of Kittery; and a sister, Irene Vilakis of Portsmouth.
CAMDEN - Florence T. Camden, 89, formerly of George Street, Kittery, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Harbor Home, York Harbor. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at St. Raphael Church in Kittery, with burial to follow in Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot. Friends and family may call 6-8 p.m. Monday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/US Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Virginia Spofford
HAMPTON - Funeral services for Virginia (Swain) Spofford, 76, of 7 Dearborn Ave., were held Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with memorial services held at the Rye Congregational Church. The Rev. Dennis Marasco officiated. Poems were read by Mrs. Spofford's daughter, Wendy W. Greenleaf, and Carla Bickford. Sylvia Moulton was the organist.
In attendance were members of the church and representatives from Seacoast Area Widowed Persons (AARP).
Burial was in the Central Cemetery in Rye, with Committal services by the Rev. Marasco.
HINDES - Mrs. Priscilla (Paul) Hindes, 79, of Dobie Road, Okemos, Mich., died Sept. 15, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours 6-8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Flowers will be accepted. Donations in her memory may be made to the Ingham County Medical Care Facility, 3860 Dobie Road, Okemos, MI 48864. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
Priscilla Y. Murphy
HAMPTON - The funeral for Priscilla Y. Murphy, 71, of 29 Fairfield Drive, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were held in the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor, officiated. Anne Young was organist.
Words of remembrance were offered by her children and grandchildren. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore.
Pallbearers were Stuart M. Spooner, Stuart Spooner, William Toll, Douglas Murphy, Leon Chapman and Michael Clouthier.
Kennard Miller Palfrey Jr.
SEAL ROCK, Ore. - Funeral services for Capt. Kennard Miller Palfrey Jr., U.S. Coast Guard, retired, 66, of 860 NW Estate Drive, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with memorial services at the North Church Chapel, Portsmouth. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor, officiated.
Masonic services were given by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth including W.M., Craig Brown; Mar., Thomas G. LaBerge, P.M.; chaplain, Nelson Hersey, P.M.; Sec. Donald Ladd, P.N.; Tyler, Knute Lundgren, P.M.; Russell Brightman and Larry Kent.
Also assisting in services were members of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, including Dante Caminati, Ken Young and Ralph Woodman.
Granddaughter Melissa Newman read "Crossing the Bar." Bagpiper was Douglas Cals. Malcolm Austin was the organist.
In attendance were members of the church, St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM, and former classmates from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1951.
An honor guard was formed by a detachment from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Reliance of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, including Ensign Aaron P. Wallace, Seaman Timothy L. Hollenback, Seaman Clifford R. Jeyngs, Seaman Andrew A. Talbot and Seaman Jadon J. Sprague.
The American flag was presented to Capt. Palfrey's widow, Jean (Burr) Palfrey, by Ensign Aaron P. Wallace.
There will be a ceremonial burial at sea under the direction of the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Reliance.
Louise I. Gobbi Parker
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Louise I. Gobbi Parker, 75, formerly of South Street, were held Thursday at St. John's Church. Officiant was the Rev. Timothy T. Rich, with the Rev. Gordon Allen preaching. Organist was Diane Colby Dean. Family reflections were given by David D. Gobbi and Stephen R. Parker. Pallbearers were Robert J. Gobbi, David D. Gobbi, Stephen R. Parker, Jason B. Parker, William L. Pilcher Jr., Donald Savage and James G. Noucas Jr. Her remains will be laid to rest with her late mother, Jessie Armitage, in Harmony Grove Cemetery, overlooking Little Harbour.
Frank A. Bennett
LEBANON, Maine - Funeral services for Frank A. Bennett, who died Sept. 11, 2000, at his home, were held Friday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the Eliot Congregational Church, officiated. Military honors were provided by the Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 6 Cmdr. Joseph Shaw. Mr. Bennett's grandson, U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Robert Bennett, presented the American flag to his widow, Virginia Louise Fernald Bond Bennett. The funeral was attended by many relatives and friends.
Thomas N. Neiman
GEORGIA, Vt. - Thomas N. Neiman, 55, died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, because of an inflammation of the endocartim, a section of the heart, in St. Albans, Vt.
Born Dec. 25, 1944, in New York City, he was the son of Myril and Marion Neiman. He was a graduate of St. Michael's College, Class of 1966.
During the Vietnam War, he flew for the Air Force as a tanker pilot.
On April 1, 1967, he married Dina Hackett in Craftsbury, Vt. They have resided in Georgia, Vt., since 1972.
He practiced patent law.
In November 1998, he won his first election to the Vermont House of Representatives, and he had just begun preparations for re-election to his second term.
In addition to his wife, Dina, survivors include his children, Lara Bouchard and her husband, Mike, of Winooski, Vt., and Josh Neiman of George, Vt.; his parents, Myril and Marion (Murphy) Neiman of Winchester, N.H.; his brothers, Paul Neiman and his wife, Lucy, of Rye, N.H., and Gerald Neiman and his wife, Kathleen, of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; his sister-in-law, Jeann Hackett of Hardwick, Vt.; his brother-in-law, Ron Hackett and his wife, Celia, of South Hero, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Neiman.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Ascension Catholic Church in Georgia, Vt., on Sept. 13, 2000. He is buried at the Georgia Plains Cemetery.
Jack T. Woodworth
HAMPTON - Jack T. Woodworth, of 4 Campbell Drive, formerly of Andover, Mass., died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the Seacoast Health Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1924 in Methuen, Mass., he was the son of the late Claude Preston and Gladys (Thornton) Woodworth.
He graduated in 1943 from Hebron Academy in Maine, where he excelled as a basketball and baseball star. In 1950, he graduated from the University of Maine. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and participated in the invasion of Normandy. He was the recipient of four battle stars.
He worked at his family business, Woodworth Motors in Andover, and later for Standard Oil. After his retirement he worked at Rye Harbor and Odiorne Point State Park where he was never without a bag of lollipops for the children.
He served on the board of directors of the United Fund and the Red Cross. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and he was a former president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Andover, where he was named "Outstanding Young Man of the Community." He was an avid sports fan, and especially fond of the Boston Celtics.
He loved to cook and was a natural at it - rarely consulting a cookbook. His specialty was vichyssoise, Caesar salad and Delmonico potatoes. Anything he prepared not only tasted wonderful but was also beautifully presented. He delighted in surprising his grandchildren with presents.
He was the husband of Geraldine (Gullion) Woodworth.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Paula Chapman of Moultonboro, Jane Woodworth of Mass; one son, Thornton Mark Woodworth of North Andover, Mass.; three stepdaughters, Paula Courchene of Portsmouth, Sandra Acox and Brenda Keatley, both of Hampton; two stepsons, Bryant Keatley of Woburn, Mass., and Robert Keatley of Somerville, Mass.; and 14 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Webster Woodworth.
WOODWORTH - Jack T. Woodworth of 4 Campbell Drive, Hampton, died Sept. 13, 2000. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from noon until the hour of the service at the funeral home on Sunday. Private interment will be in the West Parish Cemetery, Andover, Mass. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Estelle R. Brooks
SOUTH BERWICK - Estelle R. Brooks, 88, of Berwick Estates, 79 Portland St., died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
Born Dec. 24, 1911, in Eliot, she was the daughter of Walter W. and Lizzie (Earl) Rowe and was a 1930 graduate of York High School. For more than 70 years, she had resided in York Beach.
She was a longtime member of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach and had been very active in the Ladies Aid at church. She was also a member of the York Senior Center.
She was the wife of the late Harold E. Brooks Sr., who died in 1970.
Survivors include one son, Harold Brooks Jr. of York Beach; one daughter, Marilyn Brooks Ely of York Beach; one stepdaughter, Hazel Brooks Thompson of Smyrna Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Brooks Boyd, who died in 1961, and a grandson, Troy J. Ely, who died in 1985.
BROOKS - Estelle R., 88, of Berwick Estates, South Berwick, formerly of York Beach, widow of Harold E. Brooks Sr., died Sept. 13, 2000, in Dover, N.H. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Union Congregational Church, Church Street, York Beach. The Rev. Ann Shaw will officiate. Burial will be in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Virginia Spofford
HAMPTON - Virginia (Swain) Spofford, 76, of 7 Dearborn Ave., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born in Concord, N.H., on July 26, 1924, the daughter of the late Leo R. and Clara (Mellon) Swain.
She was a graduate of Concord High School in Concord, N.H. and the Wellesley Hospital Pediatric Nursing Program in Wellesley, Mass. Before her retirement in 1985, she was employed for the State of N.H. Department of Revenue.
She was a long time resident of Dunbarton, N.H. and a former member of the Dunbarton Congregational Church. She attended the Bethany Church in Rye; she was an Outreach Volunteer for the Seacoast Widowed Persons Service (AARP) and was a parental mentor for Families First of Portsmouth.
She was the wife of the late Warren H. Spofford.
Survivors include two daughters, Wendy W. Greenleaf of Boothbay, Maine and Deborah S. Sanders of Barrington, N.H.; a granddaughter, Jennifer A. Johns of Newfields, N.H.; three sisters, Peggy Dyment of Concord; Barbara Zanes and Sally Dame, both of Laconia; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Clayton Swain and a sister, June Rollins.
Cecelia Mallock Tanner
SEABROOK BEACH - Cecelia Mallock Tanner, 88, of Seabrook Beach, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000.
She was born Aug. 15, 1912, the daughter of the late G. Russell and Hazel P. (Fowler) Littlefield.
Raised in Newburyport, she was a graduate of Newburyport High School and spent her summers at Seabrook Beach. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Singer Sewing Company, for CBS Hytron, and the Chase Shawmut Company, all in Newburyport. In 1948, she founded the local landmark Ceal's Clam Stand on Route 1A at Seabrook Beach, which she owned and operated for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Tanner was a member of the Newburyport Senior Citizens Club, Tide Mill Chapter No. 67 O.E.S. of Hampton, and was a member of the Navy Wives' Club of Okinawa, Japan. She enjoyed traveling, line dancing, her garden of roses and her favorite cat Rige.
She was the wife of the late Russell V. Mallock and George D. Tanner.
Family members include two daughters, Florence L. Henderson of Seabrook, Louise Selvidge and her husband Gene of Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four brothers, George, Robert, Donald and Walter Littlefield and by a son-in-law, Carold Henderson.
Joseph F. Marconi
PORTSMOUTH - A funeral for Joseph F. Marconi of 28 New Castle Ave. was held Friday, Sept. 8 from the Farrell Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church.
In attendance were family and many friends.
The Rev. Edward J. Kelly and the Rev. Thomas Savage were the celebrants. Marion Arnoldy was the organist. Mary Leonard was soloist. Gospel readings were read by sister-in-law Evelyn E. Marconi and granddaughter Cindy Marconi. Daughter Nancy Marconi Lemos gave a eulogy.
His daughters and grandson, Nancy Marconi Lemos, Annetta Marconi and Ryan Joseph Marconi placed the pall and crucifix on the casket.
His daughters, Mary Ann Marconi Routhier and Shirley-Jo Marconi presented the gifts to the altar.
Burial was at the Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth with committal services conducted by the Rev. Kelly and Rev. Savage.
Pallbearers were grandsons Aaron Joseph Marconi, Jason Joseph Lemos, Jared Joseph Lemos, son-in-law Butch Routhier, and nephews Geno Marconi and Vincent Marconi.
