Mary Jane Sullivan

NORTH HAMPTON - Mary Jane Sullivan, 68, of North Hampton, formerly of Cumberland, R.I., died unexpectedly at Exeter Hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000.

She was the wife of Charles J. Sullivan. They would have celebrated 44 years of marriage on Sept. 29.

Born Oct. 2, 1931, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Dr. John and Jane (Kellogg) Coyne.

She was a graduate of Brookline High School, Class of 1949, and Fisher Junior College in Boston. She was a longtime communicant of St. Mary's Church in North Attleboro, Mass.

She lived in Cumberland for 37 years, moving recently to North Hampton, with her daughter, before she and her husband were to make their residence in their new home in Newmarket.

In addition to her husband, family members include one son, Charles T. Sullivan and his wife, Elizabeth, of North Attleboro; three daughters, Jane S. Allison and her husband, Dwight, of North Hampton, Carol S. McDougle and her husband, Andrew, of Hopedale, Mass., and Kathleen S. Lamarre and her husband, Ronald, of North Grafton, Mass.; one brother, Dr. John A. Coyne of Wellesley; five grandchildren, Dwight L. Allison IV, Matthew C. Allison, Kyle P. McDougle, Kelsi M. McDougle and Michael D. Doble; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Peter Coyne.

SULLIVAN - Mary Jane Sullivan, 68, of North Hampton, died Sept. 19, 2000. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests there be no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation Inc., 1751 York Ave., New York, NY 10128.

Leon J. Gambetta

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Leon J. Gambetta, 58, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 18, 2000.

Born July 23, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he chose to make New England his home for the past 30 years.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force; worked many years for the phone company, both in New York and locally; and was a dedicated employee of the U.S. Postal Service for the past 25 years. He was actively involved with the American Postal Workers Union as a union steward.

He was an avid golfer and a collector of antiques.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Jeannine (Gambetta) Lewis of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Christine Elaine Gambetta of Dover; his longtime friend and companion, Colleen Shepard; his father, O. George Gambetta of New Port Richey, Fla.; and a brother, David Gambetta of Littleton, Colo.

GAMBETTA - Leon J. Gambetta, 58, of South Berwick, Maine, died Sept. 18, 2000. Because of his love of nature, a memorial service will be held outside at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Fort Foster in Kittery Point for his family and friends to share in the celebration of his life. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, N.H.

Robert E. Sliney Sr.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Robert E. Sliney Sr., 83, of Framingham, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, after a long illness, at Metro West Medical Center in Framingham.

Born Jan. 31, 1917, in Pepperell, Mass., he was the son of the late William and Julia (Gainey) Sliney.

He was a graduate of Pepperell High School, where he was president of his senior class, a graduate of St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass., and Boston College, Class of 1941.

While at Boston College he was a member of the varsity baseball team for four years, earning his varsity letter. He maintained his relationship with Boston College as a member of the Alumni Association, the President's Circle, and the Varsity Club. He was also an active fund-raiser for the school.

He was a member of the St. Bridget's Church Holy Name Society and the United Way.

A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, with service in the Pacific Theatre. He was employed for 36 years as a business office manager with the New England Telephone and Telegraph, retiring in 1982.

He was the husband of Theresa M. (Hickey) Sliney for 44 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Susan Ohrenberger and her husband, Henry, of Framingham, Deborah Schreck and her husband, Craig, of Little Boar's Head, N.H., and Donna Marie Cox and her husband, Brian, of Medfield, Mass.; two sons, Robert E. Sliney Jr. and his wife, Molly, of Medfield, and Thomas M. Sliney of Hartford, Conn.; one sister, Mary MacMaster of Lowell, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

SLINEY - Robert E. Sliney Sr., 83, of Framingham, Mass., died Sept. 19, 2000. His funeral will take place at 9:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the Eugene J. McCarthy and Sons Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St., Framingham, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bridget's Church, Route 9, Framingham Center. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Lowell. Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home. Donations may be made in his memory to the Fourth Floor Hospice Room, Metro West Medical Center, 115 Lincoln St., Framingham, MA 01702.

Raymond Elliot Tobey

KITTERY - Raymond Elliot Tobey, 94, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born Dec. 26, 1905, in Kittery Point, he was the son of the late Hiram and Adah (Bray) Tobey. He attended Traip Academy in Kittery and then attended the University of Maine, where he graduated with the Class of 1927. He went on to obtain his master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

He moved from Kittery Point and worked for Westinghouse in Springfield, Mass., and in 1951 moved to Evansville, Ind., to work for Seeger Corp., which later became part of Whirlpool Corp. While at Whirlpool, he helped design and manufacture the frost-free refrigerator. He held approximately 25 patents for various refrigeration and air-conditioning products. In 1970 he retired and moved to Rye.

He wrote several articles for the Boston and Maine historical societies, of which he was a member. He was very interested in the history of Kittery and Kittery Point, and spoke numerous times at the Kittery Historical Society. He was also a member of the East Side Lions Club, Evansville, Ind. He was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. He was a talented poet whose poems were the highlight of his fellow employees' retirement parties.

He was the husband of the former Mabel Garton, who now resides in Indiana, for 67 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Eldon and Cathy Tobey, of East Longmeadow, Mass.; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and John Dittmer, of Fillmore, Ind.; three beloved grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Wendell Tobey, who died in 1990.

TOBEY - Funeral services for Mr. Raymond Tobey, who died Sunday at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Baptist Cemetery, Kittery Point. There will be no visitation hours, and at the family's request, instead of flowers, please send contributions to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Timothy T. Moore

SOUTH PORTLAND - Timothy T. Moore, 43, of Florence Street, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at his residence.

Born in Portland, he was the son of Peter J. and Florence (King) Moore Sr. He attended Portland schools and Portland High School.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by a daughter, Katrina Welch of South Portland; a son, Timothy T. Moore Jr. of Kittery; and three brothers, Peter Jr. of Indian Township, Maine, and David and Bruce, both of Westbrook, Maine.

MOORE - Timothy T. Moore, 43, of South Portland, died Sept. 18, 2000. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral at the Conroy-Tully South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. Burial will be private.

Douglas Haywood Sheffield

WILMER, Alabama - Douglas Haywood Sheffield of Wilmer, Alabama, a retired Navy man, died on Sept. 1, 2000. He died after the vehicle he was driving struck the rear end of a tractor-trailer that was stopped at a traffic light. No further information about the accident is available at this time.

Sheffield, a 30-year Navy veteran, served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the Navy in 1969. His last duty station was the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he was assigned to the Navy Shipyard tugboats. He retired from the Navy as a chief boatswain's mate.

He was a member of the Shriners ABBA Temple, Pentalpha Lodge No. 804, VFW Post 3550, and American Legion Post No. 153.

He was the husband of Carole.

In addition to his wife, survivors include twin sons Raymond H. Jacobsen of Beverly, Mass., and Ronald H. Jacobsen of Newmarket, N.H.; daughter Ismadale McDonald of Texas; two brothers Harold and Donald Sheffield of Ala.; four sisters, Patsy Stewart and Helen Shutz of Ala., Jean Harvey of Fla., Carol Jean Hunter of Texas; brother and sister-in-law Herman and Betty Greene of Kittery, Me.; five grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Priscilla Hamilton Hindes

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Priscilla (Paul) Hamilton Hindes, 79, of 3860 Dobie Road, were held Tuesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth.

Graham Alvord officiated.

Words of remembrance were given my Mrs. Hindes' son-in-law, Dr. John Jerome.

Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, with committal services by Mr. Alvord.

Martha Buckley

DOVER - Martha Buckley, 79, of Waldron Towers, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born Dec. 6, 1920, in Dover, she was the daughter of Stephen P. and Theodora (Polychronopoulos) Kretsepis and resided in Dover all her life.

For 40 years, she and her husband owned and operated Buck's Cafe on School Street in Dover. Following this, she was employed by the State of New Hampshire's Division of Human Services where she worked for 10 years.

She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation.

She was the wife of the late John P. Buckley. He died in 1952.

Members of her family include her son, Jack Buckley, and his wife, Sharon, of Dover; two grandchildren, Jennifer McCarthy and Katie Buckley, both of Dover; two sisters, Effie Pappas of Dover and Sophia Fowler of Ipswich, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Peter Kretsepis.

BUCKLEY - Martha Buckley, 79, of Waldron Towers, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation with Rev. Dean Panagos, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in the Annunciation Cemetery. The Trisagoin Service will be conducted by Fr. Panagos at 7:15 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to make memorials in her memory to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation Library, 93 Locust St., Dover, NH, 03820, or to the Dover Public Library, 73 Locust St., Dover, NH 03820.

David Neil Carroll

HEBRON, Conn. - David Neil Carroll, 60, of West Street, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 at Hartford Hospital.

Born April 29, 1940, in Meriden, Conn., he was the son of the late Donald and Pauline (Labonte) Carroll.

He attended Meriden High School, and graduated from Babson College with a degree in business.

He was employed by the Hartford Insurance Group for 17 years where he worked in the Policyholder Service Department.

He was a communicant of the Church of the Holy Family in Hebron, and a member of the Wooster Lodge No. 10 AF&AM in Colchester since 1979.

He volunteered his time to work with the AHM Youth Services , the Hebron Senior Center and also at the polling booths during local elections.

He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Sullivan) Carroll. Mrs. Carroll survives him.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by two sisters, Valerie Blume of Westerly, R.I. and Joan Correll of Hampton, N.H., six nieces and nephews, one great niece and two great nephews.

Daryl T. Record

MARGATE, Fla. - Daryl T. Record, 52, of Margate, Fla., died Sept. 16, 2000 at his home.

Born June 8, 1948, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Robert G. and Louise (Gidcumb) Record Sr. He grew up in Portsmouth and attended Great Bay School in Newington.

He is survived by his two brothers, Robert G. Record Jr. of Gulfport, Miss. and David Record of Margate, Fla.; one sister, Katherine Marshall; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

RECORD - Daryl T. Record, 52, of Margate, Fla., died Sept. 16, 2000. There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21, at Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry, NH. The Peabody Funeral Homes, 15 Birch St., Derry, is in charge of the arrangements.

Priscilla Hamilton Hindes

OKEMOS, Mich. - Priscilla (Paul) Hamilton Hindes, 79, widow of Howard H. Hindes, of 3860 Dobie Road, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Ingham County Medical Care Facility in Okemos.

Born Dec. 17, 1920, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Haven T. and Eloise (Whittier) Paul. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1938, and Wheelock College in Boston, Class of 1941.

She was a teacher at Lafayette School in Portsmouth, and had been president of the parent-teacher association at the New Franklin School in Portsmouth.

In the 1950s, she became one of the first women in New Hampshire to have her own radio talk show, "Coffee Time with Priscilla," which aired on WHEB. She had been a fashion commentator for various organizations in the Seacoast.

She owned and operated Coastal TV in Portsmouth and Dover. She also owned and operated Priscilla's Frocks and Fancies, and Priscilla's Patio, both formerly of Portsmouth.

She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include one daughter, Dr. Jaye Hamilton and her husband, Dr. John Jerome, of Bath, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Anna Dematatis of Austin, Texas, John Paul Jerome, and Benjamin Travis Jerome, both of Bath.

She was predeceased by her son, Paul "Topper" Whittier Hamilton, and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth "Penny" (Mace) Hamilton.

HINDES - Mrs. Priscilla (Paul) Hindes, 79, of Dobie Road, Okemos, Mich., died Sept. 15, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours 6-8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Flowers will be accepted. Donations in her memory may be made to the Ingham County Medical Care Facility, 3860 Dobie Road, Okemos, MI 48864. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
