Ann E. Johnson
HAMPTON - The funeral for Ann E. Johnson, 83, of Hampton was held Monday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were held at Christ Church, Episcopal in Exeter. The Rev. John E. Denson Jr., rector, officiated. Sarah Brink was the organist. Private burial was held in the Exeter Cemetery.
Herbert L. Tetherly
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Herbert L. Tetherly, 85, of 15 Union St. were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Monday, Sept. 25, in Portsmouth, with graveside services held at Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth. The American Flag was presented to his goddaughter, Nancy Hanscom. He is survived by two sisters, Viola Perham and Alice Mayhew.
Rober Pugh
SOUTH DENNIS, Mass. - The Rev. Robert E. Pugh, 71, of Tuckoosa Road, died Saturday evening, Sept. 23, 2000, at his home.
Born May 23, 1929, in Ixonia, Wis., he was the son of the late Edward J. and Ruby (Davies) Pugh. He was a graduate of Watertown High School, Watertown, Wis., in the Class of 1946. He graduated from Northland College in Ashland, Wis., in 1958. In 1962 he graduated from Bangor Theological Seminary in Bangor, Maine.
He served as student pastor of churches in Princeton, Grand Lake Stream and Waite-Tallmadge, Maine. He served as pastor of churches in East Millinocket and Kittery Point, Maine.
He was the minister of the Union Evangelical Church, United Church of Christ (UCC), in Hopedale, Mass., for 21 years, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he was a resident of Powder Springs, Ga., for three years before moving to South Dennis, Mass., in 1995.
He was a member of the Nollesemic Lodge of Masons A.F.&A.M. of Millinocket, Maine. In retirement, he was a member of the First Congregational Church (UCC) of Chatham (Mass.) and also a member of the choir. He was a member of the Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ of Portland, Maine.
He was the former chaplain of the Hopedale Fire Department, and throughout his life he maintained an avid interest in his Welsh heritage.
He served as a quartermaster 2nd class in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He was the husband of Cynthia (Dunham) Pugh. He and his wife celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary July 10, 2000.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Rand E. Pugh of Harwich, Mass.; two daughters, Mary M. Rosenbach of South Dennis, and the Rev. Rwth S. Ashton of Wilmington, Mass.; one brother, Donald W. Pugh of Horicon, Wis.; and three nephews and their families.
PUGH - The Rev. Robert E. Pugh, 71, died Sept. 23, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the First Congregational Church (UCC) of Chatham, with the Rev. Dr. David Erickson, minister, officiating. Interment at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Ave., Portland, Maine. Harold James Ham
PORTSMOUTH - Harold James Ham, 69, of 20 Islington St., died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 10, 1930, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Harold J. and Helen L. (Shannon) Ham. He was a graduate of St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School, Class of 1948.
For many years, he was employed at Alkon's China Shop and Restaurant Supplies, and at the former First National Bank in Portsmouth.
He was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
He was the husband of Helen (Spear) Ham.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother, Charles W. Ham and his wife, Mariette, of Rye; a stepson, William Leblanc and his wife, Barbara, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; a stepdaughter, Fern Legere and her husband, Serge, of Tee Lake, Quebec, Canada; three stepgrandchildren; three nieces; and several cousins.
HAM - Harold J. Ham, 69, of 20 Islington St., Portsmouth, died Sept. 21, 2000. Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Mary Jane Sullivan
HAMPTON - The funeral for Mary Jane Sullivan, 68, of North Hampton, formerly of Cumberland, R.I., was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was the organist, and Patricia Mackensen was the soloist.
Acolytes were Edward Wakeen, Robert Grissemeer and Larry Murphy. The pall was placed on the casket by her children, Jane S. Allison, Carol S. McDougle, Kathleen S. Lamarre and Charles T. Sullivan. The readings were offered by Carolyn Coyne.
Burial followed in Center Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Ham. Pallbearers were David Marsland, John Rinaldi, David Bartley, Jay Riley, Joseph Abbis and Jack Coyne.
Among those in attendance was a large delegation from Sacred Heart School.
Hazel R. Margeson
SOUTH BERWICK - Hazel R. Margeson, 96, of Pleasant Street, formerly of York and Ogunquit, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at the Greenwood Center in Sanford after a lengthy period of illness.
Born Oct. 25, 1903, in Northwood, N.H., she was the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Wilcox) Pender. She moved to Maine at the age of 8.
She had worked at the Crotty Brothers Restaurant at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 20 years.
She was a former Wells Grange member; a former member of the order of the Eastern Star in Wells; a past great Pocahontas of the Agamenticus Council in Wells; and a great past Pocahontas of the State Council.
She was an avid quilter and was a member of the Cocheco Quilters of Dover, N.H.
She was predeceased by both her husbands, Goodale Dixon, who died in 1941, and Harry Margeson, who died in 1974.
Survivors include two sons, Arthur G. Dixon of Cape Neddick and George G. Dixon of Ogunquit; five daughters, Doris H. Goerner of Newfields, N.H., Myrtle M. Legendre of Bedford, N.H., Bessie I. Naimey of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Louise F. Ford of South Berwick, and Patience A. Dixon of North Berwick; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Maude Hilton, who died in 1985.
MARGESON - Hazel R. Margeson, 96, of Pleasant Street, South Berwick, formerly of York and Ogunquit, died Thursday at the Greenwood Center in Sanford. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Union Congregational Church of York Beach, Church Street. Interment in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Herbert L. Tetherly
PORTSMOUTH - Herbert L. Tetherly, 85, of 15 Union St., died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.
Born Oct. 28, 1914, in Kittery, he was the son of the late Charles D. and Georgia M. (Langley) Tetherly. He attended Kittery schools.
Before his retirement, he was employed for the B&M Railroad and then worked for the National Gypsum Co.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He was a member of Emerson Hovey Post No. 168, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Portsmouth.
He was the husband of the late Violet J. (Fitzgerald) Tetherly.
Survivors include seven godchildren and their families; two lifelong friends, Arthur and Betty Hanscom of Portsmouth; and one sister, Rosalind Davis of Kittery.
TETHERLY - Mr. Herbert L. Tetherly, 85, of 15 Union St., Portsmouth, N.H., died Sept. 22, 2000. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Harmony Grove Cemetery, South Street, Portsmouth. Leon J. Gambetta
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Leon J. Gambetta, 58, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 18, 2000.
Born July 23, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he chose to make New England his home for the past 30 years.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force; worked many years for the phone company, both in New York and locally; and was a dedicated employee of the U.S. Postal Service for the past 25 years. He was actively involved with the American Postal Workers Union as a union steward.
He was an avid golfer and a collector of antiques.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Jeannine (Gambetta) Lewis of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Christine Elaine Gambetta of Dover; his longtime friend and companion, Colleen Shepard; his father, O. George Gambetta of New Port Richey, Fla.; and a brother, David Gambetta of Littleton, Colo.
GAMBETTA - Leon J. Gambetta, 58, of South Berwick, Maine, died Sept. 18, 2000. Because of his love of nature, a memorial service will be held outside at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Fort Foster in Kittery Point for his family and friends to share in the celebration of his life. Robert J. Fitzgerald
PORTSMOUTH - Maj. Robert J. Fitzgerald, USAF, Ret., 76, of 13 Van Buren Ave. and Pawtuckaway Lake, Nottingham, died at his home Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, following a bout with pancreatic cancer.
Born Feb. 20, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Joseph and Agnes (McGreal) Fitzgerald.
Bob served his country during World War II, retiring in 1963, after 21 years of service. He went on to work at Simplex Wire and Cable Co., retiring after 18 years there.
The Fitzgerald family spent many summers at Pawtuckaway Lake, during which time Bob served as president of the Pawtuckaway Lake Shores Association and attended St. Joseph's Church in Epping. He was a member of St. James Church, the Retired Officers Association, The Military Blues, and the Daedalions Granite State Flight No. 53.
He was the husband of Adelle 'Del' (Cooley) Fitzgerald for 56 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Glen J. Fitzgerald of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Gayle Markham and her husband, Peter, of Dover; four grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Trevor and Courtney Fitzgerald, all of Columbus; and many nieces and nephews.

Ann E. Johnson
HAMPTON - Ann E. Johnson, 83, of 2 Presidential Circle, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at her home.
Born Aug. 15, 1917, in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Herman G. and Delia (Kurtz) Schultz.
She was raised in Exeter and was a graduate of the former Robinson Female Seminary. She worked as a hairdresser, owning and operating the former Ann's Beauty Shop on Winnacunnet Road for many years, retiring in 1974.
She was the wife of the late Arthur C. Johnson who died in 1974.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol A. Houle and her husband, Edward, of Portsmouth; one brother, Glen Schultz of Groton, Vt.; four grandsons, Harry Rebels, Paul Rebels, Michael Stenstream and Daniel Stenstream; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert H. Stenstream, who died in 1985.
JOHNSON - Ann E. Johnson of 2 Presidential Circle, Hampton, died Sept. 21, 2000. Douglas Haywood Sheffield
WILMER, Alabama - Douglas Haywood Sheffield of Wilmer, Alabama, a retired Navy man, died on Sept. 1, 2000. He died after the vehicle he was driving struck the rear end of a tractor-trailer that was stopped at a traffic light. No further information about the accident is available at this time.
Sheffield, a 30-year Navy veteran, served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the Navy in 1969. His last duty station was the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he was assigned to the Navy Shipyard tugboats. He retired from the Navy as a chief boatswain's mate.
He was a member of the Shriners ABBA Temple, Pentalpha Lodge No. 804, VFW Post 3550, and American Legion Post No. 153.
He was the husband of Carole.
In addition to his wife, survivors include twin sons Raymond H. Jacobsen of Beverly, Mass., and Ronald H. Jacobsen of Newmarket, N.H.; daughter Ismadale McDonald of Texas; two brothers Harold and Donald Sheffield of Ala.; four sisters, Patsy Stewart and Helen Shutz of Ala., Jean Harvey of Fla., Carol Jean Hunter of Texas; brother and sister-in-law Herman and Betty Greene of Kittery, Me.; five grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Priscilla Hamilton Hindes
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Priscilla (Paul) Hamilton Hindes, 79, of 3860 Dobie Road, were held Tuesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth.
Graham Alvord officiated.
Words of remembrance were given my Mrs. Hindes' son-in-law, Dr. John Jerome.
Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, with committal services by Mr. Alvord.
John P. Langton
SAN ANTONIO - John P. Langton, 75, of San Antonio, formerly of Kittery, died Sept. 9, 2000.
Born in Kittery, he was the son of Joseph and Eleanor Langton, and a graduate of Traip Academy in 1943.
He was a past worshipful master of Kelly Lodge 1131 in San Antonio.
He was the husband of Theodate (Black) Langton.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a granddaughter, Andrea Cave; a grandson, Sean Langton; a great-grandson, Steven; a brother, Joseph Langton; sisters Charlotte Lynch and Lillian Walsh; and several nieces and nephews.
