Helen F. Colliander
HAMPTON - Helen F. Colliander, 77, of 7 Colby St., died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare.
Born June 10, 1923, in Winchester, Mass., she was the daughter of the late John D. and Anna F. (Burke) Swymer.
She was a graduate of Winchester High School with the Class of 1940.
She worked for a short time as a secretary for the principal at Winchester High School, for John Hancock Insurance Co. and later for H.P. Hood Co. in Charlestown, Mass.
A longtime resident of Winchester, she moved to Hampton in 1975 coming from Whitesboro, N.Y., and before that lived in Holderness, N.H.
She was a daily communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and a member of the Catholic Women's Club. She was also a former member of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library and belonged to a local ladies bridge group for more than 20 years. In addition, she performed volunteer services at Exeter Hospital and various church groups.
She was the wife of Ralph T. Colliander for 56 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, John D. Colliander of Hampton Falls; three daughters, Linda J. Webb of Portsmouth, Gail F. Mears of Gilford and Janet M. Martel of South Berwick; 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Swymer and Frederick Swymer, both of Woburn, Mass.; one sister, Judith Duke of Salem, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
COLLIANDER - Helen F. Colliander, 77, of Colby St., Hampton, died Oct. 8, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Nathan Thomas Decker
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Nathan Thomas Decker, of 20 Brown St., died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, following a brief illness.
Born February 15, 1916 in Hardin, Lebanon, he was the son of the late William and Emmiline Alexander Decker. He attended Wilkes-Barre schools.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of master sergeant and receiving the bronze star.
He was self-employed as a scrap and metal dealer throughout the Wyoming Valley.
He was a member of the VFW Post 132 and the St. Anthony / St. George Maronite Church, where he was a communicant, usher, and active in services of St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus.
He was the husband of Emma Decker, with whom he would have celebrated 54 years of marriage on Nov. 28 of this year.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Dr. Thomas N. Decker and his wife, Vicki Anderson Decker, of Portsmouth, and the Rev. Father William T. Decker, pastor of St. Sharbel Church in Portland, Ore.; a grandson, Nathan T. Decker, and a granddaughter, Christen L. Decker, both of Portsmouth; one brother, William Decker, of Wilkes-Barre; four sisters, Theresa Decker, Louise Chmura, and Anna John, all of Wilkes-Barre, and Katherine Gould of Mountain Top, Pa.
He was predeceased by a brother, George Decker; and two sisters, Mary Mislak and Cecila Wire.
DECKER - Nathan T. Decker of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., died Oct. 9, 2000. The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday from the Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service Corp., 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702. A Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony's Maronite Church. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township, Pa. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Margaret Haskell
KITTERY - Funeral services for Margaret Haskell, 86, who died Oct. 5, 2000, in York Hospital, were held Monday at the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor, officiated. A grandson, Rich Buzzell, of Kittery, eulogized his grandmother.
A graveside committal service and burial followed in North Waterboro Cemetery, Waterboro, Maine. The Rev. Martindale recited committal prayers. Bearers were Gene Haskell, of Grand Forks, N.D.; Neil Haskell, of Portland, Maine; Dana Haskell, of Norfolk, Va.; Rich Buzzell, of Kittery; Elaine Giles of Chocura, N.H.; and Tammy Jones, of Kittery - all grandchildren of the late Mrs. Haskell.
The Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery was in charge of arrangements.
Darrell D. Wilkerson
NEWPORT, N.C. - Darrell D. Wilkerson, 73, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000 at Carteret General Hospital.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years of military service. He was also a veteran of the Korean conflict and served in Vietnam. He was a member of VFW Post 8986 in Beaufort, N.C., and was a member of the DAV.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Carol Wilkerson of Plattsburg, N.Y., and Glenda Wilkerson of Fresno, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Anita Bailiff of Wilmington, N.C.; one stepson, Ricky L. Cox of Newport; a sister, Virginia Natara of Nevada; three grandchildren, Nick Walker and Jessica Walker of Plattsburg, and Heather Patnode, husband Tom and son Jared of Queensbury, N.Y.
WILKERSON - Darrell D. Wilkerson, 73, of Newport, N.C., died Oct. 7, 2000. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in North Carolina with the Rev. Wayne Best officiating. Arrangements by Munden Funeral Home and Crematory in Morehead City, N.C.
Martin E. Koski
PORTSMOUTH - Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Martin E. Koski of 91 Lafayette Road, and Iron, Minn., died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 6, 1918, in Eveleth, Minn., he was the son of Hilja (Kylanen) Koski and Matt Koski. He is survived by his wife of 55 years and by five children, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by a son, Karl (Lennie) Koski, and by his only sibling, George M. Koski.
Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1967, he settled his family in Portsmouth and worked part time as a real estate agent and also for the Internal Revenue Service in Andover, Mass.
KOSKI - Martin E. Koski, 82, of 91 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, N.H., and Iron, Minn., died Oct. 6, 2000. A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the Little Harbor Chapel on Little Harbor Road (which has no heat, so bundle up). Family flowers only. Richard "Arax" Manougian
PORTSMOUTH - Richard "Arax" Manougian, 78, of 58 Coakley Road, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at his home.
Born May 21, 1922, in Portland, he was the son of Horan and Angel (Stepanian) Manougian and had been a resident of Portsmouth for many years. He was a graduate of Portland High School, Class of 1940. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He remained in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring as a chief petty officer.
He was employed at the Pic 'n Pay supermarket in Portsmouth for more than 40 years.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the American Legion, St. Andrew Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite Valley of Nashua. An avid golfer and bowler, he participated in the Retired Senior Military Leagues.
He was the husband of Shirley (Beaulier) Manougian
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Shelly Lynne Manougian and Tina Manougian, both of Portsmouth; two sons, Richard John Manougian of Rochester, and Dennis Vacca of Hampton; four grandchildren, Olivia Manougian, Jonathan Vacca, Joel Vacca and Mariah Vacca; one brother, Souran "Babe" Manougian, of Portsmouth; one sister, Dorothy Stearns of Portland; four nieces and four nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Sybil Martin, and a brother, Haron "Caesar" Manougian.
MANOUGIAN - Richard "Arax" Manougian, 78, of 58 Coakley Road, Portsmouth, died Oct. 7, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours are 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Raymond Adams
KITTERY - Funeral services for Raymond Adams, 80, of Kittery, were held Friday evening at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home. A friend of the family, Nancy Hayward Milani, eulogized Mr. Adams, and his daughter, Rozeanne Buzzell, recited prayers. Other friends and family members were invited to share memories and reflect on his life.
Members of the motorcycle clubs that he belonged to were also present. A special letter of sympathy was sent to the family by U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen, and it was read at the funeral.
A graveside committal service and burial took place on Saturday in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot. Prayers and words of remembrance were recited by Chris Adams Butch, a cousin of Mrs. Adams. A naval military contingent from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard provided honors and presented the American flag to Mr. Adams' widow.
Francis H. Earthrowl Jr.
NEWTON, Mass. - Francis H. Earthrowl Jr., M.D., died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at the Newton Wellesley Hospital in Newton. Born in Springfield, Mass., he was a longtime resident of Newton, Mass. and Hampton, N.H.
A veteran of World War II and Korea, both the U.S. Navy and Mash Unit of Korea, he was a surgeon for the Newton Wellesley Hospital, the Glover Memorial Hospital of Needham, Mass., and the Framingham Union Hospital of Framingham, Mass., for more than 40 years. His specialties were general surgery/subspecialties; abdominal and hand surgery; and emergency medicine.
A 1948 graduate of Tufts University, he was a member of the American College of Surgeons; A.M.A.; the MA Medical Society; Charles River District Medical Society; a founding member of the American Trauma Society; the American Board of Emergency Medicine; the American Board of Surgery; the American Society for Surgery of the Hand; the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons; the American Cancer Society; fellow of the Boston Surgical Society; the American College of Emergency Physicians; past member of Brae Burn Country Club; and past member of the Charlesgate Yacht Club.
He was the husband of Ruth M. (Sawyer) Earthrowl for 50 years; the father of Anne E. McDonough and her husband, Joseph, of Needham; Francis H. Earthrowl III and his wife, Lory, of Lempster, N.H.; Pamela D. Kazes and her husband, Mark, of Bradford, Mass.; Jonathan R. Earthrowl of Salem, N.Y.; Elizabeth C. Carlson and her husband, Richard, of Weare; Richard P. Earthrowl of Cambridge, Mass.; and Frederick C. Earthrowl of Newton; three sisters, Elenor Lathum of Worcester, Mass., Mary-lou Lewis of Honolulu, and Kathleen Earthrowl of Kingwood, Texas; 11 grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.
EARTHROWL - Francis H. Earthrowl Jr., M.D., of Newton, Mass., died Oct. 5, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave., Needham, Mass. Visiting hours from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Burial at the Newton Cemetery in Newton.
Helen G. Kauffman
KITTERY - Helen G. Kauffman, 87, of Haley Road, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at York Hospital.
Born Dec. 8, 1912, in York, she was the daughter of Clarence and Lucy (Haley) Grant. She attended local schools and graduated from R.W. Traip Academy, Class of 1930. She went on to attend Gray School of Business.
She and her late husband Frank R. Kauffman were married in 1938. She was a lifelong resident of Kittery, raising her beloved family there. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery, where she also played the piano for many years at Sunday services.
She was a member of the Piscataqua Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Republican Women's Association and the Piscataqua Kennel Club. She enjoyed her volunteer time at the Kittery Naval Museum and her time spent playing the piano at sing-alongs at the Homestead in Kittery.
She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Joy and Bill Pierce of Kittery Point, and Deidre and Dennis Hanson of Albin, Wyo.; grandchildren, Jonas Grant Hanson, Erica Joy Hanson, Emily Jane Hanson, Robert William Pierce, Cynthia Ann Pierce, AdaLynn Pierce and Diane Marie Pierce; a sister, Oraville Piche of York; and her brother, George Grant, of Los Angeles.
KAUFFMAN - Helen G. Kauffman, 87, of Haley Road, Kittery, died Friday, Oct. 6, at York Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery, with a time of fellowship and remembrance to follow in the church hall. Charles Henry Barney
LEWISBURG, Penn. - Charles "Hank" Henry Barney, 82, of 193 Smoketown Road, where he had lived with his daughter and son-in-law the past three months, formerly of Ocean Road, Portsmouth, died at 8:58 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2000.
Born Nov. 13, 1917, in Holyoke, Mass., the second of five children, he was the son of Charles E. and Amy (Elwell) Barney. He met Ann O'Mara of Worcester, Mass., whom he married in 1945. She preceded him in death in 1996 after 51 years of marriage.
He graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a bachelor of science degree in education.
A lieutenant junior grade in the Navy, he captained a PT boat in the South Pacific during World War II. He had previously served as a basic-training instructor in Newport, R.I.
A life-long educator, he earned a master's degree in education and served as a teacher, coach and director of athletics for the Farmington High School, Farmington, Conn. He moved from teaching to a career in sales, becoming first a sales representative for the Curtis School Plan, and then regional manager for Quality School Plan Inc., a division of Readers Digest Inc. He never lost his commitment to education, serving as a member of the board of education in Pascack Valley Regional School District, Bergen County, N.J. He retired in 1983 when he and his wife moved to Portsmouth.
He was an Eagle Scout and athlete as a youth. He is lovingly remembered for his appreciation of sports, his skill at cribbage, his knowledge of the back roads of New England, his fondness for lobster, his remarkable perseverance and his boundless commitment to his family.
A family man in the truest sense, he is survived by three children, one son and daughter-in-law, Jack R. and Bobbie J. of Edgewater, N.J.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carole A. and Frank A. Swenson of West Bath, Maine, and Susan B. and John H. Mathias of Lewisburg; six grandchildren, Scott C. Swenson of Castleton, N.Y., Bryan T. Swenson of Groton, Mass., Mark R. Swenson of West Bath, Kathryn A. Mathias of Seattle, Margaret J. Mathias of San Francisco, and Dana E. Kroman-Barney of Bennington, Vt.
He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.

Eunice K. O'Brien
HAMPTON - The funeral for Eunice K. O'Brien, 92, of 1752 Ocean Boulevard, Rye, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church. The Rev. Maurice D. Lavigne, pastor, was the celebrant. Marjorie Scully was organist and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. Philipp and Matthias Imboden, her grandsons, offered the readings. The Responsorial Psalm and the Prayer of the Faithful were offered by Sara and Priscilla Imboden, her granddaughters. The gifts were presented to the altar by Norah and George Predaris and words of remembrance were offered by her daughter, Kathryn Imboden. Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover, Mass., with the Rite of Committal conducted by the Rev. Joseph Farrell of Merrimack College. Pallbearers were Nicolas Imboden, Matthias Imboden, Philipp Imboden, Jack O'Brien and Robert O'Brien.
Paul C. Hodson
CAPE NEDDICK - Paul C. Hodson, 58, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, after a serious illness.
Born in Stoneham, Mass., he was son of the late Marie Kinsley of Maine and the late James Hodson of Massachusetts. He attended Stoneham High School and served in the Air Force.
Employed by Pan Am at the time of his death, he previously worked as a carpet layer and a pipefitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 14 years. He was also a professional truck driver, private pilot and a licensed scuba diver.
He was the brother to Arthur Joseph White of Pennsylvania, Richard Hodson of Florida, and the late Barbara Harris and the late Lillian Lindhal; brother-in-law to Richard Harris of Pennsylvania; father to Paul D. Hodson of New Hampshire and Pauline Mott of Maine; and grandfather to Jennifer and David Mott of Maine, and Alana and Kira Hodson of New Hampshire.
The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.
Roger A. Lavigne
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Roger A. Lavigne, 81, of 28 Island Ave., Kittery, were held Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Edward Kelley. Lector was Eileen Foley. In attendance were representatives of Northeast Federal Credit Union. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with the Rev. Kelley conducting the Committal. The American flag was presented to his widow Jeannette (Pouliot) Lavigne. Pallbearers were Larry Reardon, Jack Sullivan, Kirk Miller, Jack O'Connell, Bob Fiandaca and Tom Leary. Portsmouth Lodge of Elks conducted services Monday evening at the Farrell Funeral Home.
John L. Whenal
HAMPTON - The funeral for John L. Whenal, 72, of 36 Mill Road, North Hampton, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Dr. Elizabeth J. Walton, former pastor of the Rand Memorial Church in Seabrook, officiated. Sylvia Moulton was organist. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Walton. Full military honors were accorded by a detachment of personnel from the N.H. National Guard from Pease International Tradeport. The American flag was presented to his widow, Shirley A. (Marston) Whenal. Bagpiper Donald Matheson offered Scottish laments.
