Ruth M. Garland
AUGUSTA, Maine - Ruth M. Garland, 83, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
Born Jan. 3, 1917, in Vassalboro, Maine, she was the daughter of Marion (Small) Miller and Ralph E. Miller.
She attended Portsmouth High School and graduated from Ershine Academy in Vassalboro, Maine.
As a child, she traveled South with her family in a Model T Ford. Ruth had schooling along the way and attended classes with "Spanky" from "Our Gang."
She played the organ and sang in the choir on occasion, at the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth.
She worked at Togus V.A. Hospital in Augusta as a dietary aid, retiring after 30 years.
She enjoyed fishing with her husband, George Garland, who passed away in 1977, and loved feeding wildlife in her back yard.
She also had a love for reading and writing poetry.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Miller of Augusta; two daughters, Mary Ellen Sprague Brochu of Kittery and Louise Weymouth of Maine; five grandchildren, Laurie Revak of Kittery, Tammie Fryman of Greenland, N.H., David Young of Dover, and Amy and Norma Weymouth of Maine; and four great-grandchildren.
GARLAND - Ruth M. Garland, 83, of Augusta, Maine, died Oct. 7, 2000. Committal services will be held Friday, Oct. 20, at the Father LeClair Memorial Chapel in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, Maine.
Helen G. Kauffman
KITTERY - A memorial service for Helen G. Kauffman, 87, of Haley Road in Kittery, who died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, was held Monday, Oct. 9 at the St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery with the Rev. Pat Bristow-Carrico officiating.
In attendance were her loving family, close friends and associates from her service organizations, as well as members of her close church family. A special reading was offered by Hannah Rothermel, a close friend and activities director of the Homestead in Kittery. The congregation was led in some of Helen's favorite music by organist Jennifer Brown.
Following the service there was a luncheon in the church hall offered by the church, where all could share in the wonderful memories of Helen's life.
Mary N. Kendall
EXETER - Mary N. Kendall, formerly of Rochester and living at RiverWoods at Exeter since 1994, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Oct. 22, 1912, in York Harbor, Maine, she was the daughter of Carroll and Marion Neal. She attended Rochester High School and graduated from Wheelock College in Boston.
She was active in the Frisbie Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served as president. She was a volunteer for Seacoast Hospice for many years and served as chairman of Kendall Insurance Inc. She belonged to the York Harbor Reading Room.
Mary was a teacher before returning to Rochester in 1932 to marry Kennett R. Kendall, who died in 1979.
She is survived by her two sons, Kennett R. Kendall Jr. of Durham and Robert N. Kendall of York; her daughter, Lee K. Moore of Laguna Hills, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. John B. Neal of Chula Vista, Calif.; nieces and nephews.
As one of the original residents of RiverWoods, Mary was very active in welcoming new residents and in other activities at RiverWoods.
KENDALL - Mary N. Kendall, of Rochester and Exeter, died Oct. 7, 2000. At Mrs. Kendall's request, memorial services will be held at St. Peter's by the Sea in Cape Neddick, when it opens in the spring of 2001. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice in Exeter.
Leona G. Ferrin
YORK - Leona G. Ferrin, 88, of 46 Woodside Meadow Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at her residence.
Born on July 10, 1912, in York, she was the daughter of Ernest C. and Eva (Lantz) Ferrin. She was a 1929 graduate of York High School and attended MacIntosh Business College.
She was a longtime employee of Mrs. John L. Emerson of York, except for a period of military service during World War II, serving in the Wespac WACS in the South Pacific.
Following the death of Mrs. Emerson, she was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the Planning and Estimating Department until her retirement in 1977.
She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Russell (Edith) Woodward, with whom she resided. She is also survived by several nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
FERRIN - Leona G. Ferrin, 88, of 46 Woodside Meadow Road, York, died Oct. 11, 2000. Graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford, N.H. Roger E. Shorey
YORK - Roger E. Shorey, 76, of Frost Hill Road, York, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare after a long illness.
Born Aug. 18, 1924, in Portland, Maine, he was a son of Clifton and Virginia (Emerson) Shorey. He lived in South Berwick and Dover before finally settling on the Old Rogers Farm in York.
A graduate of Dover High School, he served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1949. He served in the Southwest Pacific for two and a half years and attained the rank of sergeant.
He has been well known for his ready wit and jovial nature. He was a charter member of the York Militia and also a captain. He has been much in demand as an entertaining speaker on Colonial topics for school children and adults alike. He was a life member of the South Berwick Rod and Gun Club. He became an expert on evaluating guns and was noted for building flintlocks and cannons and also collecting and repairing many types of rifles and handguns.
He was a faithful worker at Moore Business Forms for 35 years as a machinist and prototype maker. He looked forward to many hunting trips with his friends to Rangeley, Maine. He also went lobstering with Dan Donnell for several summers.
Roger loved the outdoors, animals and mostly his family, especially his loving wife of 53 years, Lillian Rising Shorey. He always supported his children and is survived by his son, John Shorey of New York City; his daughters, Kathleen and David Avery of Eliot, Sharon Gerald of Eliot, Susan O'Brien of Michigan and Christine Shorey of Durham; his sister, Jeanne Adams of Derry; two brothers, Kenneth Shorey of Rollinsford and Elwin Shorey of Virginia; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Carole Robinson Gosselin and a niece, Lisa Shorey Saurman.
SHOREY - Roger E., 76, of Frost Hill Road, York, died Oct. 9, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare after a long illness. A memorial service will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the First Congregational Church on State Road in Eliot. Family flowers only. Margaret Whittemore
ELIOT - Margaret (Laycock) Whittemore, 83, of Eliot, passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the York Hospital.
Born July 20, 1917, in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Jane (Lanigan) Laycock. She attended local schools and then moved to Newton, Mass. In 1952, she moved to Eliot and has lived in this area ever since.
She was a devoted wife and mother who took a great deal of pride and love in her home and family. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and cooking.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Elwood Whittemore, of Eliot, whom she married in October of 1935 in Salem, N.H.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Patricia) Shapleigh, of Eliot, and Ann Marie Tamburri, of Swift Water, Pa., plus her beloved five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother, Edward Laycock, and two sisters, Gertrude Ammon and Ann Laycock.
WHITTEMORE - Margaret (Laycock) Whittemore, of Eliot, passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at York Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. The Reverend Father Real Nadeau, of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Kittery, will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Cemetery in Eliot. Visitation hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday evening. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.
Nancy H. Newick
NEWINGTON - Memorial services for Nancy H. (Buswell) Newick, 76, of 34 Fabyan Point Road, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with graveside services at the Newington Cemetery, Newington, N.H. The Rev. John Filler, pastor of the Newington Congregational Town Church, officiated.
In attendance were representatives from the town of Newington.
Evelyn Grace Holden Phillips
COLEBROOK, N.H. - Evelyn Grace Holden Phillips, 86, passed away on Friday, Oct. 6, 2000.
Born Nov. 27, 1910, in Colebrook, she had lived in Stewartstown and Colebrook all her life.
She was married to the late Bert Phillips for 53 years, and together they farmed for many years.
After they left the family farm, Evelyn lived her dream when she became a licensed nursing assistant in 1970. She worked at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook, where she was affectionately known as "Ma Phillips" and was loved by all who knew her care and compassion.
She leaves nine sons, Richard, of Grafton, Vt., Roy, of Nashua, N.H., Harold, of Hancock, N.H., Stewart, of Whitefield, N.H., John, of Exeter, N.H., Carl, of Fitchburg, Mass., Wayne, of North Stratford, Stubby, of Lancaster, N.H., and Michael, of Colebrook, N.H.; eight daughters, Grace Phillips Cross, of Sanford, Maine, Carlene Phillips LaBranche, of Milton, N.H., Samantha Phillips, of Manchester, N.H., Dory Phillips Goyette, of Portsmouth, N.H., Dorothy Anne Phillips, of Derry, N.H., Sue Phillips Normand, of Rochester, N.H., Donna Phillips Chaloux, of Rochester, N.H., and Nancy Phillips, of Colebrook, N.H.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Barbara P. Cass and Ellen Phillips. She leaves 51 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly and was loved in return.
She was a loving wife and a dear, sweet mom and grandmother, and was loving and compassionate to everyone she knew.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was noted for her raisin pies.
John J. Rousseau
DOVER - John J. Rousseau died on Sept. 19, 2000.
Born on Feb. 8, 1943, in Lawrence, Mass., he attended Lawrence High School and Merrimack College.
He retired in 1993 after selling his computer sales business, Diversified Micro Services in Manchester. He was a successful entrepreneur, who bought and sold four businesses throughout his lifetime, in New Hampshire and Florida.
During his life, he enjoyed many hobbies, including golfing, hunting, deep sea fishing, and dancing. He especially loved spending time with his family throughout the years at Salisbury Beach. Over the years, he was a frequent golfer at the Hickory Hills Country Club in Methuen, Mass., and the Andover Country Club. He was also a proud member of the National Rifle Association.
He died from complications of congestive heart failure. He also suffered from type II diabetes, Crohn's disease, clinical depression and ankylosing spondylitis.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Robin Rousseau, of Durham, Kristine Bellerose, of Auburn, N.H., Brian Rousseau, of Hopkinton, N.H., and Eric Rousseau, of Derry; his grandchildren, Hannah Bellerose and Alexander Bellerose; and his brother, Paul Rousseau of Orlando, Fla.
He was married for 31 years and was subsequently divorced from Jeanne Pauline Champagne Scott in 1995, whom he loved dearly until his death.
ROUSSEAU - John J. Rousseau, of Dover, died Sept. 19, 2000. Family and friends are encouraged to make a donation in his memory to the Strafford Guidance Center, 130 Central Ave., Dover, NH, 03820, instead of sending flowers. Mr. Rousseau will be buried at the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Lawrence, Mass.
Albert Daniel Frisbee
HAMPTON - Albert Daniel Frisbee, 70, husband of Carol Lee (Dennis) Frisbee, of 41 Vanderpool Drive, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital.
Born April 17, 1930, in Portland, Maine, he was the son of the late Byron Frisbee and Eloise (Trottier) Frisbee Badger.
He was a graduate of Traip Academy, Kittery, class of 1947, and the Burdett Accounting School in Boston.
For 32 years he was a Pepperidge Farm distributor in the area.
He was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, the Propeller Club of Portsmouth, and the Portsmouth Yacht Club.
Besides his wife, survivors include six children, Helaine Frisbee Buskin and her husband, Richard, of Brownfield, Maine, John Byron Frisbee, of Kittery Point, Carla Frisbee Morin and her husband, Thomas, of Laconia, N.H., Sheryl Mercer, of Rye, Sandra Brien, of North Hampton, and Walter Coffen, of San Jose, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Todd Fenoff, of North Haverhill, N.H., Tiffany Mercer, of Salisbury, Mass., Rachel and Robert Morin, of Laconia, Jennie Buskin, of Brownfield, Kristina Coffen, of Rye, Nicole and Alana Brien, of North Hampton, and Sarah and Brian Coffen, of San Jose, Calif.
FRISBEE - Mr. Albert Daniel Frisbee, 70, of 41 Vanderpool Drive, Hampton, died Oct. 9, 2000. Richard J. Conway
CHELMSFORD, Mass. - Richard J. Conway, 41, of Chelmsford, Mass., and Rye Beach, N.H., died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born in Lowell, Mass., on Dec. 21, 1958, the son of Richard and Beverly (Bissonnette) Conway of Westford, Mass., and Rye Beach. He was a graduate of Chelmsford High School with the class of 1977; he also attended Mt. Wachusett College.
He was employed over the years at Wang Labs in Lowell, and with his father at Conway Chevrolet-Buick-Geo Inc. auto dealers in Pepperell, Mass. At the time of his death he worked with the Harbor Homes in Nashua, N.H.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford, Mass.
He enjoyed his time at Rye Beach with his parents, and hiking in the White Mountains with his friends.
Besides his mother and father, he is survived by a sister and her husband, Laurie and Kenneth Tarpey; and a brother and his partner, Michael Conway and J. Paul Lobkovich; and his niece and nephew, Caroline and Conor Tarpey, all of McLean, Va. He is also survived by his grandparents, Henry and Jeannie (Borodawka) Bissonnette, of Nashua, N.H.; aunts and uncles, Robert and his friend Bonnie Hale Bissonnette, of Fairfax, Vt.; Richard Bissonnette and his wife, Sandra Garrigan, of Sandown, N.H., and John and Mary Lou (Burns) Conway, of Yorktown, Va.
CONWAY - Richard J. Conway, 41, of Chelmsford, Mass., and Rye Beach, N.H., died Oct. 9, 2000. Funeral will be Friday at 8 a.m. from the Dolan Funeral Home, 106 Middlesex St., Chelmsford, with a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Chelmsford. Albert A. Bovyn Jr.
PORTSMOUTH - Albert A. Bovyn Jr., 85, widower of Beatrice (Hildebrant) Bovyn, of 226 Marcy St., died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Langdon Place of Dover.
Born Aug. 1, 1915, in New Bedford, Mass., he was the son of the late Albert A. Sr. and Germaine (Senave) Bovyn.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army.
He was formerly employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist, retiring in 1971 after 30 years.
He was a member of North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; Harmony Lodge No. 8 of Newton, N.J.; Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion; AARP; and Mature Outlook.
Survivors include two sons, Albert A. Bovyn III, of Manchester, N.H., and Thomas J. Bovyn, of Dover, N.H.; four grandchildren, Veronica Hirl, of Plymouth, Mass., Laura Bovyn, of Salisbury, Mass., Cheryl Dennis, of Goffstown, N.H., and Brian Bovyn of Goffstown, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
BOVYN - Mr. Albert A. Bovyn Jr., 85, of 226 Marcy St., Portsmouth, died Oct. 10, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. COLLIANDER - Helen F. Colliander, 77, of Colby St., Hampton, died Oct. 8, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.
