Merton E. Spinney

OGUNQUIT - Merton E. Spinney, 76, of 31 Highland Ave., died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at York Hospital after a lengthy period of illness.

Born May 21, 1924, in Kittery Point, he was the son of Alice Spinney and was a graduate of Traip Academy.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He had been a foreman rigger at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of York and Ogunquit.

He was an avid golfer and member of the Cliff Country Club and was a member of Ocean Lodge No. 142 A.F. & A.M. of Wells.

He was the husband of the late Gloria K. (Yorke) Spinney, who died in 1983.

Survivors include two sons, David A. Spinney of The Woodlands, Texas, and Peter E. Spinney of Wells; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Kathleen G.) Radivonyk of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Bruce (Aldine N.) Burbank of Ogunquit; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SPINNEY - Merton E.Spinney, 76, of Highland Avenue, Ogunquit, died Oct. 19, 2000, in York. Funeral is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment in First Parish Cemetery, with graveside services by Ocean Lodge No. 142. There will be no visiting hours. The family requests that memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of York, PO Box 426, York, ME 03909, or to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Paul R. McAdams

HILLSBORO - Paul R. McAdams, 81, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at the Concord Hospital.

He was the son of Paul G. and Mary E. (Cashion) McAdams and a lifelong resident of Hillsboro. A Navy veteran of World War II, he retired as a master woodworker from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1972.

He was a member of VFW Post No. 8268, Bennington, and Smith Memorial Congregational Church, Hillsboro.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judith W. (Coffin) McAdams of Hillsboro; a son, Michael W. McAdams, of Stuart, Fla.; a daughter, Kathleen L. Dining, Dallas, Georgia; a brother, Merle C. McAdams, of Hillsboro; a sister, Betty E. Hunt, of Portsmouth; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

McADAMS - Paul R. McAdams, 81, of Hillsboro, N.H., died Oct. 18, 2000. Calling hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home, 32 School St., Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home. The Rev. Beth Ernest, interim pastor of Smith Memorial Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Ave. Cemetery, Hillsboro. A military service will be held at the grave by VFW Post 8268, of Bennington, N.H. Donations may be made in his name to the Hillsboro Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 350, Hillsboro, NH 03244.

Dorothy W. Hopper

ELIOT - A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, for Dorothy W. Hopper, 69, of 22 Sergeant Lane in Eliot, who died on Oct. 15, 2000, at her home. The service was held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, with the Rev. Stan Rockafellow of the Eliot Baptist Church officiating. Pall bearers were her nephews, Robert Hooper and Terry Hooper, as well as her great-nephews, T. J. Hooper, Heath Hooper and Jason Hooper. Burial followed in the Hooper family lot at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Seana Marie Barnes

MOBILE, Ala. - Seana Marie Barnes, 31, of 300 Bayshore Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the University of Alabama Medical Center.

Born June 29, 1969, in Portsmouth, N.H., she had also resided in South Bend, Ind., Rockingham, N.C., Aiken, S.C. and Weaver, Ala.

She was a student in the Sign Language Interpreter Training Program at Bishop State Community College in Mobile. After graduation from South Aiken High School in 1988, she attended Aiken Technical College and volunteered at the Mental Health Association of Aiken County, Aiken Regional Medical Center and Pepper Hill Nursing Center.

She was the daughter of Jerry and Elizabeth M. Barnes of North Augusta. Other survivors include a sister, Jessica Lynn Barnes Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; her paternal grandmother, Hazel Baker Barnes, of Bethel, Ohio; and many friends and relatives in Maine, New Hampshire, Florida, Ohio and Indiana.

BARNES - Seana Marie Barnes, 31, of Mobile, Ala., and a native of Portsmouth, died Oct. 10, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Belvedere United Methodist Church, 202 Rhomboid Place, Belvedere, S.C. with Dr. Arvin F. Trotter Sr., of Bishop State Community College, officiating. Memorials may be made to The Sign Language Interpreter Training Program, to the attention of Dr. Yvonne Kennedy, president, Bishop State Community College, 351 North Broad St., Mobile, Ala. 36603, or Molly's Militia, c/o Elaine van der Linden, 501 Laurel Lake Drive, Belvedere, S.C. 29860.

Lt. Col. Ulysse A. Comeau

POQUOSON, Va. - Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Ulysse A. Comeau, 77, died at his residence on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000.

Born in New Bedford, Mass., on July 11, 1923, he was the son of the late Laurent H. Comeau and Leda Henley Comeau. He served in the Air Force for 32 years as a navigator on B-52s, flying missions in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a highly-decorated officer with such distinguished medals and awards as the Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, among others. He was also a member of the Retired Officer's Association and the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gertrude Dubois Comeau; seven daughters, Jacqueline Coyne and her husband, Walter, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Carol Nesbit of Newport News; Michele Valliere and her husband, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Robert Valliere of Poquoson, Suzanne Seeberger and her husband, James, of Baltimore, Md., Paulette LeValley and her husband, Daniel, of Andover, Kan.; Yvonne Woodcock and her husband, David, of Lyndonville, Vt.; and Corinne Kartaszewicz and her husband, Robert, of East Lebanon, Maine; a son, Air Force Maj. Ronald Comeau, and his wife, Kelly, of Woodbridge; a brother, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Paul Comeau Ph.D., of Las Cruces, N.M.; 26 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

COMEAU - Ulysse A. Comeau, 77, of Poquoson, Va., died Oct. 9, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Langley Air Force Base Chapel. The family will receive friends from 8 to 9 a.m. on Thursday at Claytor Rollins Funeral home and at other times at the residence, 22 L Bells Cove in Poquoson. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 8:45 a.m. Friday at Fort Myers Chapel in Arlington, Va., with burial following in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors accorded at the gravesite. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground Blvd., Newport News, Va. 23606. The Claytor Rollins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Herschel B. Burt

EXETER - Herschel B. Burt, 73, of 93 Linden St., died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at his home.

Born July 8, 1927 in Waltham, Mass., he was the son of the late Edwin B. and Violet V. (Groves) Burt.

He was raised in Waltham and attended schools there. He lived in Exeter for many years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

He was a member and trustee of Exeter United Methodist Church, a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and a trustee of the Willard House Clock Museum of Grafton, Mass. He was the owner and developer of Deep Meadow Estates and Deep Meadow Valley in Exeter.

He was the husband of Thelma M. (Ketchen) Burt for 47 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas B. Burt and Steven H. Burt, both of Exeter; two daughters, Holly L. Colcord of Exeter and Judy V. Colella of North Hampton; 19 grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Liebried of Brentwood; two nephews, Edwin Burt of Epping and Gerald Burt of Newmarket; several nieces and nephews.

BURT - Herschel B. Burt, 73, of 93 Linden St., Exeter, died Oct. 15, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Exeter United Methodist Church, 307 Epping Road. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Private burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Exeter United Methodist Church Building Fund, 307 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Constance I. Claveau

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Constance I. Claveau, of Waterview Drive, formerly of New Port Richey, Fla., Nashua and Hudson, N.H., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence.

Born in Boston, Mass., in 1919, she was the widow of Eugene Claveau, and the daughter of the late Frederick and Bertha Roberts. She and her husband were self-employed for many years as the manufacturer of stuffed animals, formerly operating the House of Claveau in Merrimack, N.H.

Survivors include one son, Warren Brown, of New Port Richey, Fla.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jeanne and Russell Marcoux of Smithfield, Judith Claveau of Portsmouth, N.H., and Janis and Patrick Sheldon of Brookline, N.H.; three brothers, Robert A. Roberts of Wenham, Mass., Minor G. Roberts of Miami, Fla., and Martin B. Roberts of New Port Richey, Fla.; two sisters, Marguerite Zanni of Vancouver, Wash., and Mercedes Cook of Peabody, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Julie Doty and Jonathan Marcoux of Nashua, Jason Marcoux of Tokyo, Japan, Danielle Levesque of Burlington, Vt., Dominique Levesque of Austin, Texas, Christopher Levesque of Dover, N.H., and Timothy and Peter Sheldon of Brookline, N.H.; several nieces and nephews.

CLAVEAU - Constance I. Claveau, of Waterview Drive, Smithfield, R.I., formerly of New Port Richey, Fla., Nashua and Hudson, N.H., died Oct. 13, 2000. A memorial service will take place Oct. 21 at noon at Immaculate Conception Church, 216 East Dunstable Road, Nashua, N.H. with private burial services at Edgewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Breast Care Center at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, 200 High Service Ave., North Providence, R.I. 02904.

Anna (Pierce) Dollard

BRENTWOOD - Anna (Pierce) Dollard, 96, of 117 North Road, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood. She resided in Rye, until 1972 and was formerly of Newmarket.

She was born in Natick, Mass., on Sept. 10, 1904, the daughter of the late Frank N. and Annie (Knowles) Pierce. She was formerly a domestic worker throughout the Seacoast area and was a lifelong member of Pomona Grange No. 260 of Hampton.

Survivors include one son, John P. Dollard Sr. and his wife, Betty Jane, of Northwood; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

DOLLARD - Anna (Pierce) Dollard, 96, of 117 North Road, Brentwood, formerly of Rye and Newmarket, died Oct. 16, 2000. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Central Cemetery, Rye. Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by J.Verne Wood Funeral Home.

William J. Lachance

WELLS, Maine - William J. Lachance, 80, of Thompson Street, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, in York Hospital.

He was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Hanover, N.H., son of Archie and Ellen Mary Rainey Lachance.

He graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn in 1937. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1938 to 1945 and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. After retiring from the Navy, he was a housing manager at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Naval Housing, retiring in 1978.

He was a very patriotic man who loved his country and his family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Berwick and a member of the Cumberland Lodge AF & AM in New Gloucester.

He was the husband of Arvilla F. Humphrey Lachance for 52 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Joseph J. LaChance of Lyman; a daughter, Daisy Parker of Seattle, Wash.; and one granddaughter, Samantha LaChance of Lyman.

LACHANCE - In York, on Oct. 16, 2000, William Lachance of Wells died. Memorial service at a later date. Friends who wish may contribute to First Baptist Church Growth Fund, P.O. Box 729, North Berwick, ME 03906.

Kent Sandford

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Kent Sandford, 86, of Ross Road, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 22, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Raymond B. and Hester (Kent) Sandford. After graduating from high school, he went to Ohio University for two years.

He served in the Army as a medical laboratory technician in Paris, France, during World War II.

He was a commercial artist for magazine advertising for many years while living in Port Washington, N.Y., until moving to York in 1970 to help care for his aging parents.

Until a few months ago, he and his sister had been residents of Stuart, Fla.

He was predeceased by his wife, Adria (Bradley) Sandford, who died in 1965.

Survivors include his sister, Katharine Stiles of Kennebunk, and his nephew, Robert Stiles, and his wife, Judy, of Kittery.

Daniel K. Connors

HAMPTON - Daniel K. Connors, 77, of 2 Hutchinson Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital.

Born Jan. 28, 1923, in Newport, N.H., he was the son of the late Daniel and Bernice (Kendall) Connors. He lived in Lancaster and was a graduate of Lancaster High School, moving to Hampton in 1967.

He was a lineman and installer for the New England Telephone Co. for 34 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, the VFW of Lancaster, and the American Legion Post No. 35 of Hampton; and was a member of the Exeter Sportsman's Club.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

He was the husband of Marguerite J. "Pete" (Ramsey) Connors of Hampton for 53 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Michael R. Connors and his wife, Kathy, of Hampton Falls, Brian C. Connors and his wife, Vicki, of Nottingham, and Daniel G. Connors and his wife, Tricia, of Conway; five grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

CONNORS - Daniel K. Connors of 2 Hutchinson Drive, Hampton, died Oct. 14, 2000. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. The family requests no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Dorothy W. Hooper

ELIOT - Dorothy W. Hooper, 69, of 22 Sargent Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at her home.

Born on Feb. 28, 1931, in York, she was a daughter of George and Jane Bracy Hooper and attended local schools.

She was well known, serving local folks for many years at the soda fountain in the former McDaniels corner store in Eliot; after that, she worked at Bradlees department store in Newington. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting many articles of clothing for her family.

A lifelong resident of the Seacoast, she is survived by her nephews and their families, Robert and Beverly Hooper of Eliot, Terry and Carmilla Hooper of Kittery, and Paul Hooper of Eliot; a sister-in-law, Carrie Hooper of Eliot; and grandnieces and grandnephews Bobbie Jo Buja, Candy Bonham, T.J. Hooper, Heath Hooper and Jason Hooper.

HOOPER - Dorothy W., 69, of 22 Sargent Lane in Eliot, died Oct. 15, 2000, at her home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the York Visiting Nurses Association, 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909.

Pearl Louise Little

KITTERY, Maine - Pearl Louise Little, 87, of Manson Avenue, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at York Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., a daughter of Ollie and Mary Sulloway Mitrook, and she attended Portsmouth schools. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arville B. Little, in 1973.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary L. Little and Pearl B. Little, both of Kittery; three sisters, Marie Jones, Ethel Dozier and Alice Tuveson, all of Portsmouth; one brother, Anthony Mitrook of Chicopee, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

LITTLE - Pearl Louise Little, 87, of Manson Avenue, Kittery, died Oct. 14, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Monday) at Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Theodore N. Smith officiating. Committal prayers will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot.

Dale P. Macomber

ELIOT - A memorial service for Dale P. Macomber, 45, of State Road, Eliot, who died Oct. 3, 2000, in Sanford, was held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in the United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot, with the Rev. Ronald F. Messer officiating.

Words of remembrance were read from a writing by Dale's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Macomber, and words of love were spoken by Dale's very close friend Cheryl Brigham.

The congregation was led in song accompanied by Mrs. Messer on the organ. A time of sharing was held in the church hall following the service. Burial was private in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
