Gail E. Irish
LEWISTON, Maine - Gail E. Irish, 60, of Mechanic Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at d'Youville Pavillion.
Born in Portsmouth on Sept. 9, 1940, she was the daughter of Arthur E. and Phyllis Fuller Irish Jr.
She graduated from Traip Academy in 1958 and Gorham State Teachers College in 1962. She taught school in Auburn, Maine and Mechanic Falls, Maine, worked for the United Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, in Auburn, and AT&T, in Portland and Cranston, R.I. Most recently she worked for the Department of Human Services in Lewiston.
She was a member of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, photography, traveling, genealogy and local folklore and will be remembered for her caring heart and for helping others. She was kept comfortable in her last days with the care she received at St. Mary's and d'Youville Pavillion.
Survivors include three sons, Eric and Steven Miner, both of Auburn, and David Miner of Mechanic Falls; a daughter, Amy Miner, of Auburn; her mother, Phyllis Irish, of Portsmouth; a brother, David, of Norway, Maine; her aunt, Eva Hannan; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
IRISH - Gail E. Irish, 60, of Mechanic Falls, Maine, died Oct. 28, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 26 West Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls, with interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home, 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the American Red Cross, United Valley Chapter, Auburn, Maine; Make A Wish Foundation, 87 Elm St., Camden, Maine; or the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Evelyn Locke
RYE - Evelyn Locke, 93, of 70 Central Road, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
A lifelong resident of Rye, she was born here Aug. 8, 1907, the daughter of the late Charles D. and Mabel (Remick) Locke. She attended Rye schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.
She worked as a cook for several area families for many years.
She was a member of the Locke Family Association. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed hooking rugs and other crafts and was a long-time supporter of the National Wildlife Federation.
Family members include several nieces and nephews.
LOCKE - Evelyn Locke, 93, of 70 Central Road, Rye, died Oct. 27, 2000. Private graveside services were held Monday in the Central Cemetery. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hampton, officiated. Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home - Crematory, of Hampton.
Victoria Paras Mayhew
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Victoria Paras Mayhew, 76, of North Saint Andrews Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach.
She was born in Portsmouth and moved to Ormond Beach in 1993 from Silver Spring, Md. She worked as a physician's assistant before her retirement. She attended Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach. She was a member of the Halifax Yacht Club in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Survivors include her husband of seven years, Robert; a son, Michael Gregory Barlous, of Rockville, Md.; two daughters, Pamela Barlous Kelly, of Brookeville, Md., and Nicolet Barlous Taylor, of Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Nicholas Paras, of Hampton; two sisters, Amelia Brown, of Rye, and Aspasia Ellis, of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
MAYHEW - Victoria Paras Mayhew, 76, of North Saint Andrews Drive, Ormond Beach, Fla., died Oct. 29, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Volusia Memorial Funeral Chapel, 548 N. Nova Road, Ormond Beach, Fla. Father Richard Grasso will officiate.
Catherine Paula "Polly" O'Donnell
LOWELL, Mass. - Catherine Paula "Polly" O'Donnell, a member of a well known Lowell and Rye Beach family, died Monday morning at Lowell General Hospital after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born in Lowell, Aug. 25, 1949, the daughter of the late James F. and the late Mary Catherine (Casey) O'Donnell and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.
She attended the Academy of Notre Dame in Tyngsboro and was a member of the Lowell High School class of 1967. She graduated from Marymount College in Arlington, Va.
She was the director of contracting for Franciscan Children's Hospital in Boston. Prior to that, she was director of managed care contracting for Puritan Insurance in Brighton. Previously, she was a flight attendant for Pan American World and Delta Airlines and a model for the Ford Modeling Agency in New York City.
An extensive traveler, she visited six continents and over 25 countries. She enjoyed reading, tennis and socializing with friends. She was also a member of the Junior League of Boston and held memberships in the Catholic College Club of Lowell, The Guild of the Infant Savior and Vesper Country Club.
She is survived by two sisters, M. Patricia Crane, and her husband, John W. Crane, of Lowell, and Margaret J. Lawlor, and her husband, Probate Judge James J. Lawlor; a brother, James F O'Donnell Jr., and his wife, Patricia S. (Sheils) O'Donnell, of Lowell; four nieces, Catherine L. Crane, of New York City, M. Patricia Lawlor, of Washington, D.C., Kathryn Casey Lawlor, of New York City, and Margaret "Meg" O'Donnell, of Lowell; three nephews, John W. "Chip" Crane Jr., and his wife, Grace Cribbin, of Charleston, South Carolina, Stephen J. Crane, of Washington, D.C., and James F. O'Donnell III, of Lowell; two aunts, Mrs. Brendan D. (Mary Josephine) Leahey, of Pompano, Florida, and Mrs. Thomas J. (Ann) O'Donnell, of Lowell; and several cousins.
In addition, she is survived by many dear and loyal friends, who were a constant source of support in her life and, in particular, during her illness.
O'DONNELL - Catherine Paula "Polly" O'Donnell of Lowell, Mass., and Rye Beach died Oct. 30, 2000, at Lowell General Hospital. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, at the O'Donnell Funeral Home, 276 Pawtucket St., Lowell, Mass. Philip J. Soris
PORTSMOUTH - Philip J. Soris, 76, of 14 Sheffield Road, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, in Athens, Greece, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was vacationing in Italy and Greece with his wife of 52 years, Kiki Bratiotis Soris.
Born March 8, 1924, in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of the late John and Stravroula (Mellios) Soris. He was a longtime resident of Portsmouth.
During World War II he served in the Army with the Headquarters Company 29th Infantry Regiment.
Along with his wife, he owned and operated the Blue Goose Restaurant on Congress Street in Portsmouth from 1948 to 1956.
In 1956 he went to work at Pease Air Force Base and soon became the assistant chief of supply. He was named Civilian of the Year in 1972. In 1983, he was awarded a Medal of Commendation by the assistant secretary of the Air Force for his work pioneering a revolutionary approach in the use of computers to support the mission of the Strategic Air Command.
He was a member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and a past president of the St. Nicholas Church Council. One of his proudest achievements during his tenure as council president was his leadership in fund-raising activities that enabled the Greek Orthodox community of Portsmouth to retire the mortgage on its newly built church.
He retired from civil service in 1984. During his retirement he served on the board of the Service Credit Union, in addition to continuing his involvement with the Greek church. He was an accomplished gardener who loved sharing his expertise. He took great pleasure in giving his flowers and plants to friends and family.
He was predeceased by his sister, Calliope Cocotas.
He leaves his wife, Kiki (Bratiotis) Soris; two daughters, Johanna Soris of Somerville, Mass., and BarBara Soris of Epping; a brother, Christopher Soris of Portsmouth; two sisters, Georgia Stavropoulos and Louise Andrews, both of Waltham, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bertha E. Coffey
YORK, Maine - Bertha E. Coffey, wife of Gerald F. Coffey, died unexpectedly at home on Oct. 25, 2000.
Born April 24, 1922, in South Thomaston, she was a daughter of William and Ida (Laurilla) Anderson. As a young child she moved with her family to Warren. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Warren High School.
She married Gerald and raised their five children in the Allston-Brighton, Mass., area. She was employed in the nursing field at the Hannaman Hospital in Brighton and at the Stillman Infirmary at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
Gerald and Bertha retired to York. She volunteered throughout her life to various organizations, most recently with the York Food Pantry.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Walter, Robert, David and James; and by three sisters, Pauline Jordan, Esther Brown and Martha Clark.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Gerald Coffey of York.; two sons, Gerald J. Coffey Jr. and his wife, Gail, of Pepperell, Mass.; William D. Coffey and his wife, Elizabeth, of Douglas, Mass.; three daughters, Elaine A. Booth and her husband, Gifford, of Cape Neddick, Kathleen E. Zinn and her husband, Kenneth, of Ipswich, Mass., and Janis M. Cloutier and her husband, Germain, of York; 11 grandchildren, Jennie, Chris, Brian, Alex, Lauren, Germain, Daniel, Michael, Tyler, Julie-Ellen and Nicholas; two sisters, Muriel Anderson and Hilda Williamson, both of Rockland; two sisters-in-law, Katherine Dunphy of York and Patricia Anderson of Douglas; and many nieces and nephews.
COFFEY - Bertha E. Coffey of York, Maine, and formerly of Allston-Brighton, Mass., died Oct. 25, 2000, in York. A memorial Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Stephen Alden Bennett
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Stephen Alden Bennett, a newspaperman for 40 years in New York, New Hampshire, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts and Oklahoma, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at his home in Alexandria. He had lymphoma.
Bennett, 62, was managing editor of the Post Star in Glens Falls, N.Y., for 10 years ending in 1998.
"You could always count on him standing by his credibility and integrity," Post Star publisher James Marshall said in a report in the newspaper Tuesday. "He was a champion of freedom of the press."
Bennett was founding publisher of Publick Occurrences in Newmarket, N.H., the Seacoast weekly newspaper credited with helping to defeat legislation to build an oil refinery off the state's small coastline. The legislation was backed by the late shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis.
He published the weekly Irregular in North Conway, N.H., covered New Hampshire for the Boston Globe, was managing editor of the Carroll County Times in Westminster, Md., and was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, where he was assigned to the space, education and crime beats.
"His reporting on Baltimore's prison system resulted in wholesale changes and the removal of the warden of the city's prison," said Mike Rhea, a former Sun colleague and an editor at Reuters in Washington.
In Boston, he was an editor of Trial Magazine, the national legal magazine of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. In Oklahoma, he was a reporter for the Daily Oklahoman in Oklahoma City and an editor for the Ponca City News.
Bennett was born in Fairfax, Okla., and was a 1961 graduate of Oklahoma State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Shaunna McDuffee Bennett, and three children, Patrick Alden Bennett of Charlotte, N.C., Meredith Wheeler Bennett and Rachel Darden Bennett, both of New York City; a brother, John L. Bennett of Annandale; and two sisters, Marjorie Capps and Ruth Ann Bennett, both of Oklahoma City.

Cora M. Livingstone
NORWAY, Maine - Cora M. Livingstone, 91, formerly of Kittery, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.
Born May 4, 1909, in Lewiston, she was the daughter of Philip and Louisa (Fortin) Liberty of North Yarmouth.
Mrs. Livingstone, the former wife of Henry Vernon Blais, deceased, of Gray, she was one of the original families of the Gray Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1940.
She remarried in 1965 to Irving R. Livingstone of the Portsmouth, N.H. Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
She is survived by her husband, Irving; a son, Ronald H. Blais of Gray; three brothers, Van Liberty of New Gloucester, Conrad Liberty of Auburn and Roland Liberty of North Yarmouth; one sister, Mrs. Delina McCarry of Biddeford; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three sisters.
There will be no visiting hours, but a memorial service will be held at a later date at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Norway, Maine.

William Howard Goodwin Jr.
NAPA, Calif. - William Howard Goodwin Jr. passed away on Oct. 24, 2000, in Napa.
Born March 31, 1942, in Kittery, Maine he was the son of Elizabeth and William Goodwin Sr.
He was reared and educated in Portsmouth, N.H., where he also met and married Ramona Arlene Getchell.
In 1967 he transferred from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, where he retired in 1996 as a mechanical engineer. After retirement, he became an instructor in the computer lab at Napa College.
He is survived by his wife, Ramona of Napa; daughters, Pamila Greb and Jennifer Willeford of Pahrump, Nev.; sisters, Regina Conner of Greenland, N.H., Maryanne Shephard of Clinton, Mass., and Elizabeth Ball of Somerville, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Katherina Aschettino.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, under the auspices of the Napa Valley Masonic Lodge No. 93 F. & A.M.
