Mrs. Amelia Gallant
PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Mrs. Amelia (Wilkie) Gallant, 80, of Portsmouth, formerly of Framingham and Needham, Mass., were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel on Tuesday, with services at the Rye Congregational Church in Rye. The Rev. E. Dennis Marasco, officiated. The opening prayer was given by Val Wilkie. Scripture readings were given by Donna Wilkie, Jim Burke, Carolyn Vinica and Sally Watts. Bob Watts gave the eulogy. Jan Stover was organist.
In attendance were members of the church and representatives from the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.
Burial will be in Eastman Cemetery, Sunapee, at the convenience of the family.
Elizabeth MacDonald
YORK, Maine - Elizabeth MacDonald, of 2 Victoria Court, formerly of Hobe Sound and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at York Hospital.
She was born Aug. 20, 1912, in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Louisa (Rawlings) Kupper. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Columbia University.
She was the senior bacteriologist for the county of Westchester, N.Y., retiring after 20 years in the early 1970s. For many years she and her husband, Ian, would winter in Hobe Sound while living in Westchester during the summer.
She moved to York from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ian Munroe MacDonald, who died in August 1998.
Survivors include her daughter, Meredith, and her husband, Howard Collins Jr., of Rye Beach, N.H.; two grandchildren, Kasey and Courtney Collins, of Jackson Hole, Wyo.
MacDONALD - Elizabeth MacDonald, of 2 Victoria Court, York, Maine, died Nov. 12, 2000, at York Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. George's Episcopal Church, York Street, York Harbor, Maine. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Timothy J. Driscoll
PORTSMOUTH - Timothy J. Driscoll, 41, died unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, of a stroke. He was proud of his Irish heritage and was born on St. Patrick's Day in 1959. He had been employed for the past 19 years as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He traveled extensively in his trade and worked on subMarines in Scotland, Connecticut and Washington state. He was devoted to his family and had 16 nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his identical twin brother, Thomas P. Driscoll, of Portsmouth; his father, Paul J. Driscoll, M.D., of Hernando, Fla.; and five other siblings, Paul F. Driscoll of Portland, Maine, Mary Driscoll Peyser of Portsmouth, Patrick J. Driscoll of Mission Viejo, Calif., Martha D. Kelley of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Meghan J. Hart, of Dover. His mother, Elaine M. Driscoll, late of Portsmouth, died Nov. 18, 1999.
DRISCOLL - Timothy J. Driscoll, 41, of Portsmouth, passed away Nov. 13, 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Summer Street, Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Grace Marion Badger
KITTERY - Grace Marion Badger, 76, a 46-year resident of Kittery, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Fall River, Mass., she was a daughter of William A. and Gladys M. Wilson Simmons.
She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Edward F. Badger.
She was a strong supporter of the Senior Citizens, VFW of Portsmouth, and the Visiting Nurses Association.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include two sons, Edward F. Badger, and his wife, Sheila, of Middleton, N.H., and Thomas A. Badger, and his wife, Roberta, of Somersworth; three daughters, Beverly A. Weeden, and her husband, Robert, of North Berwick, Ruth E. Bowen, and her husband, Donald, of Eliot, Patricia J. Badger, of Eliot; one step-daughter, Katherine R. Tinkham, and her husband, Charles, of Falmouth, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley M. Velozo, and her husband, Donald, of Camp Hill, Penn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Henry C. Reed
HAMPTON - Henry C. Reed, 98, of 815 Lafayette Road, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.
He was born in Worcester, Mass., Sept. 20, 1902, the son of the late Frank and Mary (Auger) Reed.
He attended Worcester schools and entered the U.S. Army at an early age.
He was a veteran of World War II and retired in 1947 as a lieutenant colonel after 23 years of active service. During World War II, he was head of the Quartermaster Corps at the former Fort Banks in Winthrop, Mass., and Fort Devens in Ayer, Mass.
After retiring from active duty, he continued in a civil service capacity for several years decommissioning forts including Fort Dearborn at Odiorne Point, Fort Constitution in New Castle and Fort Foster in Kittery, Maine. He retired in 1958 with 30 years of government service.
He moved to Rye in 1947 from Massachusetts and resided there until moving to Hampton in 1978.
In retirement he returned to school to study small engine repairs, fixing lawn movers and outboard motors for neighbors and friends. He also managed Philbrick's Store in Rye and for a few summers rented fishing boats at Rye Harbor.
From 1990 to 1994, Mr. Reed resided with his daughter, Barbara, and her husband, Richard Blinn, in Hampton Falls and then became a resident at the Inn of Hampton for five years. He was a life member of the Retired Officers' Association and a great follower of the Boston Red Sox and Bruins teams.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Nora (Barker) Reed, who died in 1991, and by six siblings.
Family members include three daughters, retired U.S. Air Force Major Constance Reed, Roberta Reed and Barbara R. Blinn, owner of the Inn of Hampton and Conference Center, all of Hampton; four grandchildren, John L. Dennehy, of Weston, Mass, Jill D. Preston, of Hampton, Robin A. Remick Wille, Esq., of New York, N.Y., and Peter W. Reed, of Hampton; and four great-grandchildren, Jack and Elizabeth Dennehy and Robert and Lindsey Preston.
REED - Henry C. Reed, 98, of 815 Lafayette Road, Hampton, died Nov. 13, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private interment will be in the Central Cemetery, Rye. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. Marian L. (Ballou) Carlton
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Marian L. (Ballou) Carlton, 95, of 928 South St., were held from Buckminster Chapel, Sunday, with a memorial service at the Greenland Congregational Community Church. The Rev. Douglas F. Carter, pastor, officiated. Scripture lesson was read by Beth Rolston. Words of remembrance were given by Marilyn Burnside. Organist was Ida Morang. Soloist was Steve Halloran.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, at the convenience of the family.
James F. Cronin
KITTERY - James F. Cronin, 87, of 21 Manson Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born on Sept. 25, 1913, in Chelsea, Mass., he was the son of Patrick and Florence Cronin. He attended St. Rose Grammar School in Chelsea and was a 1931 graduate of Chelsea High School. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was employed as a plumber for the city of Chelsea from 1946 to 1972.
He had formerly resided in Chelsea and Medford, Mass., and Stratham, before moving to Kittery two years ago.
He had spent his summers at Camp Eaton in York Beach since 1947. He enjoyed playing the banjo, campfires, York Beach and walking his dog on the beach.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Cronin.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Helena (Kelly) Cronin, of Kittery; two daughters, Marie Aimo, of Eliot, and Helena "Lee" Bryant, of South Berwick; three grandchildren, Emily Rose, Adam and Andrew Bryant; three brothers, Francis Cronin and Robert Cronin, both of Saugus, Mass., and Joseph "Bud" Cronin, of Chelsea; two sisters, Mary Nolan, of Saugus, and Patricia "Babe" Brown, of Revere, Mass.
CRONIN - James F. Cronin, 87, of 21 Manson Ave., Kittery, died Nov. 12, 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6:30 tot 8:30 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will be in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery.
William N. Genimatas
PORTSMOUTH - William N. Genimatas, 88, husband of Grace (Ravaglia), of 2 Monroe St., died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born May 2, 1912, in Koutifari, Greece, he crossed the Atlantic with his mother from his native Greece at the age of two. He attended Portsmouth schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School.
A successful Portsmouth businessman, Genimatas had been the owner of the Bowl-O-Rama and the Bowl-O-Rama Plaza since 1956. Active in civic affairs, he was a lifetime member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, a past director of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, a corporator of the Piscataqua Savings Bank, a board member of the Portsmouth Rehabilitation Center, and president of the YMCA for two years and director for 23 years. In 1940, he served as a page in the New Hampshire State Legislature. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Navy League. His Masonic affiliations included St. Andrew Lodge No. 5, York Rites and Shriner. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Pythias and a 28-year member of the Elks. He was also active in educational affairs and was a trustee of White Pines College in Chester, N.H.
In his professional career, he was past president of the N.H. Candlepin Bowling Association and a director of the World Council of Bowling. Among other business pursuits, he was the former owner of Argosy Travel as well as The Scoreboard with his two long-time partners, Anast Marinos and Dr. Henry Robbins.
He was instrumental in forming the Sons of Pericles in Portsmouth and served as its first president. A member of the Portsmouth Order of Ahepa for 68 years, he held every office in the chapter, including president. He was elevated to the District Lodge and became the District Governor. He helped found the Concord, N.H., chapter and activated the Bangor, Maine, and Keene, N.H., chapters. He chaired the first tri-district Ahepa convention, bringing Governor Sherman Adams as its honored guest.
He was active in promoting Greek culture and worked his entire life for the growth of the Greek community here in Portsmouth. He successfully led a drive to combat discrimination against ownership of property by minority groups at Hampton Beach, N.H., and was toastmaster at a fund-raising dinner for aid to Cyprus, bringing the Ambassador to the United Nations, Christian Palamar, as guest speaker. He also helped organize the American-Hellenic Council of N.H., which was comprised of business and professional men of Greek ancestry.
He was especially proud of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Community here in Portsmouth. He was a long-time member of the church council and served as council president for five years. He devoted his energies to the construction of the new church on Andrew Jarvis Drive and spent countless hours acting as liaison between architect, contractors and suppliers. He was co-chairman of the Greek Orthodox Church consecration and became one of the church's four godfathers at that time. He was also a charter member of the Hellenic Cultural Society, formed to promote the Greek culture, and led several trips to Greece.
Besides his wife of 55 years, survivors include four children, Carol and Craig Miller, of Henderson, Nev., Kathleen and Michael Van Cantfort, of Hampton, Deborah and Stephen Walker, of Greenland, and Nicholas and Dale Genimatas, of Greenland; one brother, James and Beverly Genimatas, of Portsmouth; one sister, Tassie Dominick, of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
GENIMATAS - William N. Genimatas, 88, of 2 Monroe St., Portsmouth, died Nov. 13, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Andrew Jarvis Drive. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Samuel H. Coes
HAMPTON - Samuel H. Coes, 77, of 24 Briar Road, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at his home.
He was a graduate of South Kent School in Connecticut and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. He worked at Norton Co. in Worcester as a research engineer for 42 years. He held 12 patents with Norton Co., including one for life-saving bulletproof armor. He was also a retired lieutenant commander, U.S. Navy Reserves.
He and his family lived in Northboro, Mass., for 38 years and moved to Hampton upon his retirement in 1988.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Nancy E. (Smith) Coes of Hampton; four sons, Samuel H. Coes Jr. of Hampton, Jeffery Coes of Paxton, Mass., Richard A. Coes of Webster, Mass., and Steven H. Coes of Newfields; one sister, Ann Mollenauer of Mechanicsville, Va.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
COES - Samuel H. Coes, 77, of 24 Briar Road, Hampton, died Nov. 11, 2000. Funeral services will be private. Amelia (Wilkie) Gallant
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Amelia (Wilkie) Gallant, 80, widow of Walter B. Gallant Jr., formerly of Framingham and Needham, Mass., died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home.
She was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Summit, N.J., the daughter of Valleau and Amelia (Parry) Wilkie.
She attended the Kent Place School in Summit and graduated from Columbia-Presbyterian School of Nursing in New York City.
She had worked as a registered nurse at the Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, Mass.
She was a member of the Rye Congregational Church in Rye, and was a volunteer and member of the board of directors of the Seacoast Hospice.
She is survived by two daughters, Sally Watts and her husband, Bob, of Wayland, Mass., and Barbara Shaw of Merritt Island, Fla.; one son, Jim Burke and his wife, Jill, of Killingworth, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Valleau Wilkie of Fort Worth, Texas; and six nieces and nephews.
