Mildred Simonsen
FARMINGTON - Mildred D. Simonsen, 81, of Sycamore Blvd. in Farmington, died peacefully at home early Tuesday, June 8, 2004.
Born May 28, 1923, in Arkansas, she was the daughter of Claude and Lelia Mae (Sims) Boney. Raised in Bonita, La., she had resided in Alden, N.Y., for many years and resided in Farmington since 1989.
A homemaker and mother, she was a member of the Milton Assembly of God Church, also a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a former volunteer at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
The widow of Earl R. Simonsen, who died in 1993, she is survived by one son, James C. and his wife, Carol Pettis, of Farmington; one daughter, Pat Kachelmeyer of Lockport, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Scott and his wife, Amy Pettis, of Farmington, Debbie and her husband, Danny Hughes, of Townawanda, N.Y.; also three great-grandchildren, Shannon Pettis, Alyssa and Jordan Hughes; two brothers, Dennis Boney and Gene Boney, both of North Carolina, also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St., Farmington, N.H. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 11, 2004, at the Milton Assembly of God Church on Route 125 in Milton, N.H. at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Alfred Weeden, Jr., pastor, officiating. Marie Surette
LARGO, Fla. - Marie Florence Surette, 67, a resident of Largo, Fla., formerly of Berwick, Maine, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Douglass-Wentworth Hospital in Dover while visiting her family in Maine and New Hampshire.
She was born in Lynn, Mass., on Nov. 11, 1936, the daughter of Severen J. and Florence M. (LePier) Plourde and graduated from Lynn Schools. She lived in Lynnfield, Mass., until 1977, when she moved to Berwick. She lived there until 1995 and then moved to Largo.
She was a restaurant owner for several years and also was a homemaker for many years.
She enjoyed bingo, going to flea markets and was an avid lover of auctions.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard J. Surette and her son, Wayne R. Surette.
She is survived by her four sons, Glenn R Surette of Dover, N.H., Todd M. Surette of Largo, Keven L. Surette of Rochester, N.H. and Kyle P. Surette of Berwick, Maine; and nine grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Robert and Jack Plourde, both of Lynn, Mass., Harry and Don Plourde, both of Peabody, Mass.; sisters, Hellan Mann of Wilminton, Mass., Joyce Gasper of Burlington, Mass., Irene Plourde of Lynn, Mass., and Jean Obenauer of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Per Mrs. Surette’s request, there will be no funeral services. Burial will be in Purtian Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody, Mass.

Sarah Jeannette Sterry
PORTSMOUTH - Sarah Jeannette Sterry, 93, of 108 Meadow Road, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at her home.
Born Nov. 10, 1907, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Arthur and Suzy (Littlefield) Randall and was a lifelong resident of the city.
She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church.
The widow of John Frank Sterry, she is survived by three sons, Arthur Sterry and his wife, Pauline, of Coral Springs, Fla.; Paul Sterry and his wife, Charmaine, of Kenmore, N.Y.; and Frank B. Sterry of Portsmouth; two daughters, Mary Weaver and her husband, Phillip, of Shawnee, Kan.; and Pauline Centrella and her husband, Frank, of Somerville, Mass.; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, William Sterry; a brother, Judson Randall; a sister, Arlene Randall; and a half-brother, Jack Beesley.
STERRY - Sarah J. Sterry, 93, of 108 Meadow Road, Portsmouth, died Dec. 28, 2000. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine Church. Melvinea Colby
NORTH HAMPTON - Mrs. Melvinea (Webb) Colby, 85, of 140 Mill Road, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare.
She was born July 5, 1915, in Summer Shade, Ky., the daughter of the late William and Amanda Elizabeth (Crabtree) Webb. She was a resident of Greenland from 1980 to 1995 and of North Hampton from 1995 to 1999.
She was formerly employed at the Odd Fellows Home in Concord.
She was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church and the Women's Alliance of the church; lifetime member of the Greenland Historical Society; member of Pomona Grange No. 1, Oceanside Grange, and the State Grange.
She was the wife of the late Robert Wilson Colby, who died in 1957.
Survivors include five children, Elizabeth Fletcher of Warner, Robert Colby of Raymond, Richard Colby of Gorham, Maine, Esther Hinz of Concord, and Edward Colby of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Amon Webb of LaPorte, Ind., and Lyle Webb of Newfields; one sister, June Glover of Fremont; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and longtime friend Arthur Todd of North Hampton.
She was predeceased by her daughter Linda Colby Shibles in 1980.
COLBY - Mrs. Melvinea (Webb) Colby, 85, of 140 Mill Road, North Hampton, died Dec. 29, 2000. Florence A. Coughlin
PORTSMOUTH - Florence A. Coughlin, 98, of 263 Rockland St., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Langdon Place of Dover.
Born Oct. 4, 1902, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Hopkins) Coughlin and was a lifelong resident of the city.
She was employed for many years at the former W.T. Grant Department Store and the L.V. Regan Moving Co.
She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
In her retirement, she was tireless volunteer, receiving an award of Volunteer of the Year from Gov. John Sununu in 1986. She volunteered at the Portsmouth Children's Museum for 16 years and was just announced as the first recipient of the Florence Coughlin Outstanding Service Award.
Active with the RSVP, she helped for thousands of hours at the Portsmouth Senior Center, Portsmouth Probation Department, Community Council of Senior Citizens, Seacoast Council on Tourism, Odiorne Point Nature Center, Chamber of Commerce, Portsmouth Community Foundation, N.H. Legal Assistance, Area Homemaker-Health Aide, New Franklin School, Portsmouth Visiting Nurses, Salvation Army, School for Lifelong Learning, AARP, Meals on Wheels, and Bingo for Rotary.
She is survived by her sister, Alice Coughlin of Portsmouth; nieces Kathleen Kennedy, Jeanne Haley, Louise Caverly, Ann Rutledge and Mary Ann Lambros; nephew Timothy Francois; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Patrick, James and John Coughlin; and four sisters, Ellen Hogan, Mary Rutledge, Dorothy Jacobs and Catherine Kennedy.
COUGHLIN - Florence A. Coughlin, 98, of 263 Rockland St., Portsmouth, died Dec. 28, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. J. Norman Oswell Jr.
KITTERY, Maine - A private family funeral service for J. Norman Oswell Jr., 80, who died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, was held on Thursday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home. The Rev. Patricia Bristow-Carrico, pastor of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery, officiated.
The American flag was presented to Mr. Oswell's wife, Carolyn (Thompson) Oswell, by Staff Sgt. Lee M. Jackson of the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Portsmouth. A graveside committal service and burial followed in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Pallbearers were Glen Estes, Henry Miller, Jay Oswell and Wayne Barker.
A public memorial service was held on Thursday afternoon at St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
Robert Shirley Kinch
GIBSONTON, Fla. - Robert Shirley Kinch, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000 in Gibsonton.
Born Aug. 16, 1928, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Almira and Lawrence Kinch.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Beverly Kinch of Gibsonton; daughters Debra Tosi of Cocoa and Linda Bunker of Dover, N.H.; stepdaughters Donna Burham and Gloria McDougall, both of Florida; stepson Gary Muder of New Hampshire; sister Mary Sims of North Carolina; brothers Ralph Kinch and James Dunton, both of Portsmouth, N.H.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by brothers Vincent Kinch, Guy Kinch and Howard Dunton; sisters Almira La Montagne, Florence Adams, Hazel Dunton and Constance Kinch.
Sgt. Rex Billbrough
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Master Sgt. Rex Billbrough, USMC (Ret.), 80, of 320 Ocean Road, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Friday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by grandchildren Beth O'Keefe and Jason Dupuis.
In attendance were representatives from the Seacoast Memorial Post No. 8942, VFW of Rye.
Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring.
Charles K. Nutter
EXETER - Charles K. Nutter, 84, of 13 Prentiss Way, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his home.
He was born Aug. 16, 1916, in Haverhill, Mass., the son of the late Harry and Ruth (Kaulbach) Nutter.
He lived in Haverhill for many years, moving to Ocala, Fla., in 1985. He moved to Exeter in 1996.
He worked for the Haverhill National Bank for many years and for the New Hampshire Sweepstakes Commission in the director's office.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Armitage) Nutter.
Family members include two sons, Richard F. Nutter of Exeter and Charles K. Nutter Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Newburyport, Mass.; one daughter, Maryann Pottle and her husband, Charles E., of Exeter; four grandchildren; and a close family friend, Debbie Pettengill of Exeter.
NUTTER - Charles K. Nutter of 13 Prentiss Way, Exeter, died, Dec. 29, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. Alfred V. Cashman
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Alfred V. Cashman, age 74, of High Knoll Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Norwich, Conn., the son of Maj. William and Lily (Mitchell) Cashman, who were both officers of the Salvation Army. He graduated from Portsmouth (N.H.) High School, then attended classes at the University of Virginia.
At the age of 16, he had an after-school job as letter carrier in Portsmouth. He went on to become postmaster of Portsmouth's Management Sectional Center. In 1974, he was moved to Portland, serving in the same capacity. He was responsible for deliveries in 217 communities in southern Maine. He retired after more than 40 years with the U.S. Postal Service. For the next 10 years, he was a courier for Path Lab Inc.
In 1944, he married Marie Penney at the Salvation Army in Portsmouth. He played the cornet in the Salvation Army band and recently had played the euphonium in the Bethel Christian Church band in North Berwick. He had an avid love of music of all kinds. He was a member of the Gideons Camp of Sanford. He enjoyed bowling and had become the senior bowling champion of New Hampshire, bowling in a Portsmouth league.
He was a collector of many things, including lighthouses. His favorite spot was the Nubble Light House in York.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie Cashman; a son, Brian and wife Terry Cashman of Scarborough; four daughters, Mrs. John (Darlene) Grant and Mrs. Paul (Carol) Bryant, all of Kittery, Mrs. Bruce (Sharon) Wiggin of Eliot and Mrs. Robert (Donna) Kraft Jr. of Kittery Point; a brother, William Cashman and wife Mildred of Newmarket; sister-in-law, Mrs. Chesley (Dorothy) Cashman of Keene, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Gertrude C. Thompson
KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, for Gertrude C. Thompson, 86, of 10 Langton St., Kittery, who died Dec. 24, 2000, at York Hospital. Services were held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. Opening and closing prayers as well as kind words of remembrance were offered by her son-in-law, Nelson Hersey.
Scriptural readings and other kind words were offered by her family, great-grandson Matthew Payne and Mr. Dale Payne. Other words of remembrance were offered by Dr. Henry Altenberg, a close family friend. The friends and family gathered at Yoken's conference center after the service for a time of refreshment and sharing. Burial will be in the spring in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery.
Alice C. Thompson
KITTERY, Maine - Alice C. (Carberry) Thompson, of Kittery, formerly of Allston and Brighton, Mass., died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000.
She was the beloved wife of the late Clarence Thompson, and devoted mother of Barbara Coleman of Wollaston, Mass., Jane Burg of Allston, Mass., David McLaughtlin of Winchester, Mass., and Diane Chalmers of Salt Lake City. She was also survived by nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
THOMPSON - Alice C. (Carberry) Thompson of Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 27, 2000. Funeral at 8 a.m. on Saturday from the Lehman & Reen Funeral Home, 63 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton, Mass. Renée Marie LaBerge
NORTHWOOD - Renée Marie LaBerge, 15, daughter of Alan J. and Susan E. (Brulotte) LaBerge of 130 Deerfield Road, died peacefully at her home on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, after a four-year battle with cancer.
She was born at home in Northwood on Jan. 20, 1985.
She attended Northwood Elementary School and was a sophomore at Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood where she was active in the Drama Club. She was a student for 12 years at Joy of Dance in Northwood and was a member of the Northwood Theatre Workshop.
She will be deeply missed by her family and her many friends. Her family was thankful to have spent her last week enjoying time together in Tampa, Fla., at Busch Gardens.
Besides her mother and father, survivors include her brother Aaron LaBerge of Northwood; her paternal grandmother, Doris J. LaBerge of Portsmouth and Edgewater, Fla.; her maternal grandparents, Raymond and Virginia Brulotte of Portsmouth; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
LABERGE - Renée Marie LaBerge, 15, of 130 Deerfield Road, Northwood, died Dec. 28, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Northwood Congregational Church, Route 4, Northwood. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Christine Welsh
HAMPTON - The funeral for M. Christine "Chris" Welsh, 60, of 115 Little River Road, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, officiated. Altar servers were Ben Arquin, Robert Rancourt and Larry Murphy. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.
The readings were offered by Daniel E. Coughlin Jr. and the gifts were presented by Mary Sambunjak and Judy Brown.
Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with committal prayers offered by Father Griffin. The United States flag, which lay on the casket, was presented to Mrs. Welsh's husband, John J. Welsh IV.
