Beatrice (Drinkwater) Hobbs
TAMWORTH - Beatrice (Drinkwater) Hobbs, 82, of Skandia North, passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro.
She was born Aug. 19, 1918, in Taunton, Mass., the daughter of the late Clyde and Alma (Briggs) Drinkwater, and she had lived in Center Ossipee for many years before moving to Tamworth four years ago.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Thomas Hobbs, of Tamworth; two sisters, Barbara Eldridge and Natalie Lawton, both of Center Ossipee; and nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Freedom, in the spring.
Robert M. Tuttle
CONWAY - Robert M. Tuttle, 60, of Saco Woods in Center Conway, died Jan. 30, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
He was born in Malden, Mass., on Dec. 24, 1940, the son of Wilbur and Madolin (Mitchell) Tuttle. He grew up in Bridgewater, Mass., and Harwich, Mass.
He went to prep school at Mount Hermon and attended Bentley College in Boston, where he received a certificate of accounting.
He worked for 11 years for Wellman Corp., in Boston, as an inventory accountant. He moved to this area in 1982 with his friend, Donat.
He worked for many years at Sid's Valley Food and Beverage. He was an avid reader, hiker and Red Sox fan.
He is survived by his longtime friend, Donat R. Payette, of Saco Woods, Center Conway; Donat's children, Robert, John, Lisa McDermott and Michael; Donat's grandchildren, Ryan and Brittany McDermott and Timothy, Kelsey and Olivia Payette, all of Rhode Island; and his uncle, G. Richard Tuttle, of Seattle, Wash.
He kept a good attitude and sense of humor throughout his battle with cancer.
There will be a burial service in the Notre Dame Cemetery in West Warwick, R.I., at a later date. There will be no visiting hours.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
Bertha H. Witham
CONWAY - Bertha H. Witham, 76, of North Conway, died Jan. 26, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Bartlett, the daughter of Burley and Bertha (Sweet) Hill, and she was a lifelong resident of the valley.
Mrs. Witham was a 37-year employee of the North Conway Bank.
Her greatest joy was her love for her family and her church. She was active until the very end as a volunteer at the Gibson Center Thrift Shop in North Conway.
She will be sadly missed by her surviving family, including four daughters, Beverly Connelly, of Goshen, Ind., Linda Learned and her husband, Harold, of North Manchester, Ind., Sharon Trott and her husband, Paul, of South Berwick, Maine, and Brenda Eastman and her husband, Charles, of North Conway; a son, Bradley Witham, of Georgia; 14 grandchildren, Karen Fortner, Michael Connelly, Brandon and Joshua Dickmeyer, Jason, Shannon and Jeffrey Trott, Adam, Eric, Jessica, Jennifer and Brittany Eastman, and Vaughn and Saya Witham; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Madelon Comings, of North Conway; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Witham, in 1974; a son, Lawrence R. Witham, in 1990; an infant daughter, Cheryl Witham; and four sisters and a brother.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in North Conway, with the Rev. Laurence D. Brown, pastor, officiating. The Rev. Roy Kenney will assist. There will be no visiting hours.

Jeanne Martin
LOVELL - Jeanne Martin, 64, passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston following a brief illness.
She was born on July 2, 1936, in Pawtucket, R.I., the daughter of Arthur and Loretta (Bessette) Mongeau, and she attended local schools. She went on to receive her undergraduate degree in education from the Salve Regina College in Newport, R.I., and later her masters degree from Boston College. She taught at various schools, including the C.A. Snow School in Fryeburg.
She was an excellent homemaker who loved to cook. She also enjoyed animals and spending time with her granddaughter.
She was a very caring and generous person, and she will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph Martin, of Lovell; children Rebecca Lescarbeau, of Agawam, Mass., Sara Martin, of Stow, Maine, and Suzanne Wagner, of South Berwick Maine; two brothers, Gerald Mongeau, of Taunton, Mass., and Leo Mongeau, of Pawtucket, R.I.; and one grandchild, Gabrielle Lescarbeau, of Agawam, Mass.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Edith MacKenzie Wood
Edith MacKenzie Wood, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001.
She was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of Mr. Henry Wesley and Bessie (Douglas) MacKenzie. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II as a radio operator, first class. In later years she became a licensed practical nurse.
In 1946, she married C.L. Wood, a career U.S. Marine, after his return from being a POW of the Japanese for 44 months.
They lived in North Hampton for many year, retiring to Kissimmee, Fla. They returned to Ossipee, where Roy Wood died in 1990. Edith lived in Tamworth for the last several years.
She is survived by three sisters, Stella Reed, of Tamworth, Lera Campbell, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Irene McClumpha, of Prince Edward Island, Canada; one son, Donald Wood , of Tamworth; and many nieces and nephews.
Ceremony will be held in Bay Fortune, PEI, Canada on Sat. Jan. 27.
Barbara Ann Burris Distasio
STOW, Maine - Barbara Ann Burris Jr. Distasio died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2001, following a long battle with cancer.
She was born on May 3, 1958, at St. John's Hospital in Lowell, Mass.
She attended schools in Walpole and Wilmington, and graduated from Kennett High School, class of 1976. After high school, she attended Head Hunters Cosmetologist School in Portland, Maine. After a short career in hairdressing, she retired to be a loving mother to her three sons, Andrew, Robbie and Eddie, and loving wife to her husband, Jay Distasio.
She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten by her large family and many friends whose lives she touched in a special loving way only Babsy could.
Barbara leaves behind her three sons, Andrew, Eddie and Robbie; husband Jay; father Lewis Burris and mother Barbara Burris of Green Hill Road in East Conway; two sisters, Mary E. Elliot and Susan M. Parmenter, both of Fryeburg; also nieces and nephews Mitchell and Krystal Brown, and Richard Jr., Tyler, and Dylan Parmenter.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home, 4236 Washington Street, Roslindale, Mass.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Cummins Highway, Roslindale, Mass.

John (Jack) S. McClary
John (Jack) S. McClary, 72, of East Wakefield and Rochester, died suddenly at his Rochester residence on Jan. 22, 2001.
He was born and educated in Beverly, Mass. He lived in the Groveland and Georgetown, Mass., area for 28 years. He was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran. He was associated with the trucking industry for many years as a fleet operation, national accounts service manager, and salesman. He worked for various governmental agencies as a special projects armor technician prior to moving to New Hampshire. He worked for Winnipesaukee Lumber, Wolfeboro, before retiring in 1994.
He was a member of the Massachusetts Highway Safety Council for four years. He was also a member of the Wakefield Ambulance Corps and Wakefield Fire Department.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Jones, of Center Ossipee. His wife, Lillian (Jackson) McClary, predeceased him in 1992. He is also survived by two brothers, David, of Scotland, Conn., and Kenneth, of Chester; two sisters, Judith Blackmon, of Londonderry, and Marion Cason, of Litchfield; grandchildren; nieces and nephews; also his companion, E. Darlene Bean of East Wakefield.
Calling hours will be Thursday, Jan. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, in Wolfeboro. Graveside services will be held at the Lovell Lake Cemetery, Sanbornville, in the spring.

Edward C. "Ned" Johnson
JACKSON - Edward C. "Ned" Johnson, 74, of Jackson, died Jan. 23, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in North Conway following a long illness.
Born in Lexington, Mass., the son of Edward and Mary (MacInnes) Johnson, he lived in New York City for 10 years and in Marblehead, Mass., for more than 30 years before moving to Jackson in 1989. He and his family had vacationed in Jackson for more than 40 years.
He graduated from Lexington (Mass.) High School, class of 1944, and he graduated from Boston University in 1948.
Mr. Johnson was senior vice president of Cahners Publishing company in Boston and publisher of Design News magazine.
He was a former member of the Boston Yacht Club, a member of the Jackson Tennis Club and a member of the Wentworth Golf Club.
The family includes his wife, Irma (DiLonardo) Johnson, of Jackson; a daughter, Dana E. Johnson, of Vail, Colo.; a son, Blair C. Johnson, of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren; a niece and two nephews.
Graveside services will be held in the Jackson Cemetery later in the spring. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, c/o Yvette Levesque, Volunteer Chairperson, P.O. Box 214, Glen, NH 03838.
