Delores A. Smart
LAKESIDE, Calif. - Delores Ann (Walker) Smart, 70, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in Scripps Memorial Hospital, El Cajon, Calif., following a cerebral hemorrhage.
Born April 10, 1929, in Dayton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Russell John and Theresa (Topping) Walker. She graduated from R.W. Traip Academy in Kittery. She had resided in California for many years. She loved her home and caring for others.
She was the wife of Navy Chief Warrant Officer Kenneth Smart for 15 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her son, Kenny Smart, aboard the USS Kitty Hawk; her children, Norman, Thomas and Theresa Muscarello; several grandchildren; two brothers, Edward C. Walker and his wife, Juanita, of Santa Maria, Calif., and Robert Walker and his wife, Jean, of Kittery; a sister, Dorothy Noseworthy and her husband, Jim, of Newington; several nieces, nephews, and close friends.
She was predeceased by her father in 1965 and her mother in 1995.
Harold C. Passer
PORTSMOUTH - Harold C. Passer died Oct. 8, 1999. He was the husband of Astrid Louise Passer.
He was born Nov. 28, 1921 in Lakefield, Minn. A graduate of Harvard University, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, he received his doctorate from the Harvard School of Economics. He later became an economist.
Mr. Passer will be long remembered by his family, friends and associates for all his achievements and contributions.
Catherine M. Stulb
KITTERY - A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday at St. Raphael's Church, Kittery, for Catherine M. "Babe" Stulb.
The Rev. Real Nadeau, pastor of St. Raphael's, officiated. The Rev. Donald Jacques, former pastor of St. Raphael's, also took part in the Mass.
Walt Jackson, Tony Loch, Brian Kelley, Neil Kelley, Rick Sheldon and Bruce Morrow were the pallbearers. Bumpy Edwards and George Bidlen were honorary pallbearers.
Edward Huntress was the reader. Barbara Kenny was the organist. Terry Iliaria led the choir.
In attendance, besides family and friends, was Julie Galan, director of alumni for Plymouth State College. Also represented were members of PSC graduating Class of 1944 and Portsmouth High School Class of 1940.
Services continued in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal prayers by the Rev. Nadeau.

Francis J. Mahoney
HAMPTON - The funeral for Francis J. Mahoney, 82, husband of Rita E. (Cronin) Mahoney, of 4 Tyngsboro St., Seabrook Beach, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton, followed by a Mass of Christian burial, which was celebrated at Saint Elizabeth's Church.
The Rev. James Carroll, pastor of St. Mary's Church in Georgetown, Mass., was celebrant. Acolytes were Randy Begin, Paul Lemoine and Richard Violate. Dennis Jacobs was cantor and Mary Jo Wright was organist. Beatrice Cronin was soloist. Judith DiOrio and Jennifer Gallant offered the readings.
Burial followed in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence, Mass., with committal prayers offered by Deacon John Harrison of St. Mary's Church in Lawrence. Pallbearers were Phillip Trussell, Thomas Ambrey, Charles Mahoney, Martin Smith, William Silvestri and James Keefe. The Rev. Carroll offered prayers at the funeral home on Friday afternoon.
Ruth M. Goodwin
HAMPTON - Services for Ruth M. Goodwin, 82, of 87A Winnacunnet Road, were held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Hampton, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Her son, Jack Goodwin, offered words of remembrance. Cremation followed in the Phoenix Crematory, Hampton.
Helen M. Grzybowski
HAMPTON - Helen M. Grzybowski, 81, of 13 Tower Drive, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 23, 1918, in South Portland, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Anastasia (Podziak) Malinowski. She was a 1938 graduate of South Portland High School and resided in Hampton since 1955, moving there from Portsmouth.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and was an avid bingo player.
She was the wife of the late Charles C. Grzybowski, who died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Charles J. Grzybowski of Newfields; three daughters, Jane L. Brooks, Linda S. Grant, and Helene A. Perrault, all of Kittery; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeannette Suchecki of Sanborn, N.Y.; two brothers, Joseph R. Malinowski and Frank Malinowski, both of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
Madonna B. Small O'Connell
PORTSMOUTH - Madonna B. Small O'Connell, of 57 Concord Way, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center after a long period of illness.
Born July 20, 1914, in Burlington, Vt., she was the daughter of Hellen and Didas LeClair. She attended schools in Portland, Maine.
She worked as a dietician at Maine General Hospital. She enjoyed caring for her family, playing the piano, and doing jigsaw puzzles. She also had a great love for the homeless.
She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth.
She was the wife of the late Percy C. Small, who died in 1968, and Edward L. O'Connell, who died in 1995.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna DeCarbo and her husband, Michael, of Enon, Ohio, and Hellen Hersey and her husband, Robert, of Portsmouth; a son, Richard Small and his wife, Beverly, of Eliot; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert Small.
William J. Savickas
NEWMARKET - William J. Savickas, 46, of Great Bay Woods, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the Sunbridge Care of Wolfeboro, N.H.
Born March 9, 1953, in Chelsea, Mass., he was the son of Anthony and Helen (Scoefield) Savickas, and lived in southern New Hampshire most of his life. Most recently, he had been self-employed as a heating technician throughout southern New Hampshire.
He loved to travel and had a passion for art on canvas. He was known as being an accomplished chef.
In addition to his mother, of Portsmouth, survivors include two sons, William J. Savickas Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and John P. Savickas of Nottingham; two daughters, Angela Marie Savickas and Jacqueline Trista Savickas, both of Nottingham; a grandson, Fabrice A. Savickas of Tampa; his brothers and sisters, MaryLou, Peter, Elaine, Mark and Susan; and many nieces and nephews.
Bernice O. Lester
EPPING - Bernice O. Lester, 71, of Pine & Pond Park, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Sun Bridge in Exeter.
Born May 1, 1928, in Troy, N.Y., she was the daughter of Bernard and Clara (Gormley) Goetz. She had lived in Epping for the past 17 years.
She was a member of the Brentwood Senior Citizens and the Pine & Pond Community Center.
She enjoyed bowling, arts and crafts, bingo, and any sport.
She was the wife of the late Earl Vincent Lester, who died in 1987.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Gowen and her husband, Robert, of Newmarket, Mary Taylor and her husband, David, of Portsmouth, Va., and Evelyn Lester of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Christine Breton, Judy Lanning, and Alison Taylor; one great-grandson, Nicholas Breton; a brother, Robert Goetz of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Peg Dinan of Troy, N.Y., and Barbara Einemann of Amsterdam, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Conrad J. LaPierre
HAMPTON - Funeral services for the Rev. Conrad J. LaPierre, 64, of 353 Exeter Road, Hampton Falls, were held Saturday evening at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. Bob L. Wing, pastor at Church Alive of Portsmouth, officiated. Michael Biasin was pianist. Liz Gavinski was soloist. Rob Brown offered readings. The Rev. LaPierre's daughter, Stephanie Mercer, offered words of remembrance. Burial will follow at a later date in Florida.
Virgina N. Palmer
RYE - Virginia N. Palmer, 86, of 795 Washington Road, formerly of Waterbury, Conn., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Webster at Rye Health and Retirement.
Born Feb. 3, 1913, in Waterbury, she was the daughter of the late William and Florence (Whitehouse) Houston and was a graduate of Crosby High School in Waterbury. She was been a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Waterbury.
Mrs. Palmer moved to Rye in 1986.
She was the wife of Roland O. Palmer for 62 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Steve S. Palmer of York; one daughter, Marilyn V. Marchant of Rye; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, William Houston of Stillwater, Okla.; two sisters, Florence Quinn of Rockford, Ill., and Marvis Piercey of Richmond Hill, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Ethel H. Giardi
PORTSMOUTH - Ethel Helen (Kanteres) Giardi, 64, of 59 Blue Herron Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 24, 1935, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Vaiof and Merope (Kahou) Kanteres.
She was formerly employed at the Old Ferry Landing and was also former apartment manager at the Madison Apartment Complex.
She is survived by a son, David G. Giardi, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Pamela Giardi of New York, and Connie Theodore of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.
John B. Currier
BRISTOL, Conn. - John Blake "Big John" Currier, 52, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999 after a long period of illness.
Born Jan. 13, 1947, in Exeter, he was the son of Fred and Alice Currier.
Mr. Currier was a cross-country truck driver for many years and for the past few years, was a courier driver in the Hartford, Conn. area.
He was the husband of Jeanette Currier of Epping.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Heidi of Ossipee, N.H., Holly of Epping and John of Fremont; five grandchildren; his mother, Alice of Mesquite, Nev.; his father, Fred, and his wife, Ann of Kittery; three sisters, Lucille of Mesquite, Nev., Priscilla of Waterboro, Maine, and Patty of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Roland Ratee of Gutenburg, N.J., Billy of North Hampton, and Bobby of Portsmouth; an aunt and uncle, several cousins, nieces and nephews; and two close friends, Cathy and Charlie McLeur of Bristol.

Myrtle S. Moulton
YORK - Myrtle S. Moulton, 94, of Norwood Farms Road, formerly of York Street, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at York Hospital.
Born Jan. 29, 1905, in Pittston, Maine, she was the daughter of Walter and Bessie (Green) Stilphen. She was a Sanford High School graduate and a graduate of Gorham State Teachers College.
She taught grammar school in the York school system. She was a member of the York Street Baptist Church.
She was the wife of the late Arnold Moulton, who died in 1983.
Survivors include two cousins, Beulah M. MacIntire of York and Norris Stilphen of Sanford.
James C. Riopel
SANFORD - James C. Riopel, 91, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Greenwood Center.
Born Sept. 28, 1908 in Amesbury, Mass., he was the son of James C. Riopel and Flora Kenville.
He was an Occupations Merchant seaman, ship fitter and loftsman at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Mr. Riopel was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 51, AF & AM of South Berwick for 42 years and visitor to Springvale Lodge No. 190.
He liked gardening, hunting, fishing and home building at Great East Lake.
He was the husband of the late Margaret Mary Pratt (Adams), who died in 1983, for 50 years.
He was also the husband of Eleanor Louise Muchmore for 15 years.
In addition to his second wife, survivors include a son, James L. Riopel of Earlysville, Va.; two grandsons, Anthony Forgione of Gorham, Maine, and David Riopel of Machipongo, Va.; five granddaughters, Mrs. Peter(Cecelia) Koutsivitis of South Portland, Mrs. Steve (Margaret) Foster of Portland, Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) Smith of East Aurora, N.Y., Mrs. Howard (Amy) Clark of Crozet, Va., and Caitlin Riopel of Batesville, Va.; 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Forgione.
Robert O. Donnell
YORK - Robert O. Donnell Sr., 81, of 18 Elm Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at his home after a brief period of illness.
Born Oct. 30, 1917, in York, he was the son of Fred and Mary (Olmstead) Donnell. He graduated from York schools and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard apprenticeship program. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
Mr. Donnell worked for the York Water District for 27 years, retiring as superintendent in 1976. He was also self-employed as a plumber and caretaker for seasonal residences.
He was an avid gardener. Through his expertise in the building trades, he helped many people build their homes. he was a yard sale enthusiast, traveling throughout the Seacoast to add to his collections.
He was a past member of the York Volunteer Fire Department, past treasurer of the York Fish & Game Association and was a 55-year member of the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge.
He was a founding member and fourth president of the York-Ogunquit Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and for many years, the club historian. He was a lifelong member of the York-Ogunquit United Methodist Church.
He was the husband of Winnifred MacIntire Donnell, who died in June 1994, for 51 years.
Survivors include two sons, Robert O. Donnell Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of York, and Timothy G. Donnell and his wife, Rebecca, of North Berwick; a daughter, Regina H. Donnell of York; six grandchildren; and a loving sister, Jennie Herne of York.
He was also predeceased by two sisters, Sara Dozois and Priscilla Tiszkus; and a brother, Richard Smith.
