Erna M. Bryant
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Erna M. (Kaiser) Bryant, 78, of 330 Newcastle Ave., were held Tuesday at the Buckminster Chapel. Pastor Michael Cavallaro of the Bethel Assembly of God, Portsmouth, officiated.
Readings were given by Laurie Bryant and Meredith Bryant. Meredith Bryant offered a poem, and Laurie Bryant gave words of remembrance.
In attendance were members of the church.
Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, Maine, with committal services by Pastor Cavallaro.
Bearers were Bob Bryant, Tom Bryant, Jim Beauregard, Ben Joslyn, Tom Bryant Jr. and Jim Smith.
Benjamin Slom
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Benjamin Slom, 86, of Broad Street, were held Monday from Buckminster Chapel, with services at Temple Israel. Rabbi David Mark officiated.
Words of remembrance were given by Worshipful Brother Robert L. Sutherland Sr., of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM Portsmouth.
In attendance were members of the temple, including representatives from the board of directors, the Brotherhood of the temple, the Sisterhood of the temple, B'nai B'rith, and Hadassah. Also in attendance were representatives from St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM, Scottish Rite bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover, and the New Hampshire Consistory 32 degree of Nashua.
Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.
Bearers were Frank McClellan, Allen Bennett, David L. Wilson and Ira Schwartz.
Ailene D. Lewis
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Ailene D. (Gaston) Lewis, 77, of 287 Marcy St., were held Monday from Buckminster Chapel, with services at the First United Methodist Church. Pastor William Richards officiated.
A poem was offered by Tyleah Lewis. Audrey Lewis gave words of remembrance, and solos were given by Vicki Gibbs and Lois Ramsay.
In attendance were members of the church.
Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Richards. Lois Ramsay sang "Amazing Grace."
Bearers were Ronnie Tewksbury, Michael Tewksbury, Jimmy Thomas, Larry Ingram, Daryll Perry and Al Lovely. Honorary bearers were David Anderson and Levar Stewart.
Julia S. Rossignol
PORTSMOUTH - Julia S. Rossignol, 85, of Essex Avenue, died at her home Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999.
Born in Portsmouth on June 9, 1914, she was the daughter of Louis H. and Margaret A. (Dawson) Trask. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School Class of 1932.
During World War II she was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
She was a member of St. James Church, and active with the Four O'Clock exercise group at Portsmouth Regional Hospital and the Senior Citizens program.
She was the wife of the late Albert J. Rossignol, who died in 1996.
Survivors include three children, Joyce Marie Pilla of Tamarac, Fla., Richard Lee Rossignol of Lynchburg, Va., and Sandra Jean Nault of North Yarmouth, Maine; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Frances Chadwick.
Mary F. Barnes
GREENLAND - Mary Frances Barnes, 83, formerly of Sunset Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Portsmouth on Aug. 17, 1916, she was the daughter of Percy and Mary Ellen (Loughlin) Thomas.
For many years she worked as a waitress at the former Rockingham Hotel and the former Red Lion Restaurant.
She was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a member of the Disabled Americans Veterans Chapter No. 4. She was also active with the Rockingham County nutrition program and the Senior Citizens.
She was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
She was the wife of the late Francis Barnes.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas F. Barnes of Connecticut and John E. Barnes of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, George C. Thomas of Lynn, Mass.; a sister, Olive McCarvill of Nevada; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert F. Barnes, and a brother, Robert Thomas.
Alice I. Wass
RYE - THe funeral for Alice I. Wass, 81, of 385 West Road, was held Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. Elder Lyman Threets of the Reformed Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, presided. Jean Goss was organist and Elizabeth Barcomb was soloist. Private interment will be in the Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead, Mass.
Harold H. Hoefle Sr.
WHITTIER, Calif. - Harold Harry Hoefle Sr. died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at the Berryman Nursing Home in Whittier.
Born in 1902 in Grand Junction, Iowa, he was the son of John and Maggie (Boos) Hoefle. He was one of 13 children. He graduated from Grand Junction High School and attended Drake University in Des Moines.
He moved to Whittier in 1937 and worked as a real estate agent for more than 50 years.
He and his wife attended First Christian Church in Whittier, where he served on the board of finance.
He was the husband of Okle (Landtiser) Hoefle.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Harold H. Hoefle Jr. and his wife, Marjorie, of Rye; six grandchildren, Connie (Miller) Beatty-Bean, Paula (Miller) Krasowski, Chris (Miller) Hunt, Daniel Hoefle, John Hoefle and Iain Hoefle; two sisters, Margaret (Hoefle) Cooley and Minnie (Hoefle) Boyer; a brother, Russell Hoefle; 17 great-grandchildren; and his housekeeper and friend, Ocie Poole.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia (Hoefle) Miller-Newton-Stiles.

William J. Donnelly
RYE BEACH - William Joseph Donnelly, 75, of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Rye Beach, died Dec. 14, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital in West Palm Beach of asbestos-related lung cancer.
He was born June 23, 1924, in Manchester. He lived in Rye Beach for 21 years.
He served in the Navy during World War II and trained in Fort Pierce. He participated in seven first-wave invasions in the South Pacific. He also served during the Korean War.
In 1983, he retired from Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 297, where he was president for 25 years.
He was the husband of Ruth Philbrick Donnelly.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Pat Woodham and Sarah Kean; three sons, Daniel, Joseph and Thomas Donnelly; two stepsons, Guy and Bradford Hadley; a stepdaughter, Sharan Hadley Gross; 14 grandchildren; and two step-granddaughters.
A memorial service was held at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, 407 S. 33rd St., Fort Pierce, Fla.
A military burial will be held in June.
Lena Fishbein
HAVERHILL, Mass. - Lena Fishbein, 96, of 128 Brockton Ave., died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at her home.
Born July 4, 1903, in the Ukraine, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Dora (Weiss) Bord. She came to Lawrence, Mass., at the age of three and was educated in Lawrence schools. She was a graduate of Lawrence High School and attended McIntosh Business School.
She was a resident of Haverhill since 1925, working with her late husband in the operation of the family business, Hudson's Apparel, which was located on Merrimack Street in Haverhill until it closed in 1992. After founding Hudson's, the store branched out, with locations in Portsmouth and at the former Methuen Mall.
A longtime member of Temple Emanu-El and its sisterhood, she was a life member of Hadassah and Brandeis Women. She was also a member of the former Ladies Helping Hand Society, the Hale Hospital Auxiliary, Congregation Anshe Shalom Synagogue, Haverhill Women's Club and the Haverhill Jewish Scholarship Loan Association. She was also a longtime social member of the Haverhill Golf and Country Club.
She was the wife of the late David R. Fishbein, who died in 1994. They were married for 74 years.
Survivors include three sons, Jerome J. Fishbein and his wife, Adele, of Haverhill, Arnold L. Fishbein and his wife, Naomi, and Elliott B. Fishbein and his wife, Shirley, all of Portsmouth; a daughter, Sandra B. Channen of Haverhill; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a devoted niece, Ruth Bord of Hyde Park, Mass.
Beatrice E. Trefethen Gagner
GAGNER - Beatrice E. Trefethen Gagner, 76, of Route 1, Kittery, died Dec. 6, 1999.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Family flowers only. Madeline C. Jackson
PORTSMOUTH - Madeline Christine (McIntyre) Jackson, formerly of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Mount Carmel in Manchester.
Born in Hyde Park, Mass., she was the daughter of the late William Augustine McIntyre and Martha (Walsh) McIntyre.
She studied at St. Raphael School - Precious Blood Parish. She studied liturgy at St. Gregory Institute at Emmanuel College; organ and choral direction with Leonard Whalen in Symphony Chambers. She studied with Everett Titcomb and phonetics with Fred Waring. She studied piano, clavicle, harpsichord, organ and pipes. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
She moved to Portsmouth in the late 1930s. A gourmet cook, she operated the Goodwin tea house in the Goodwin Mansion, then on Islington Street.
She was organist and choir director at the Church of the Immaculate Conception for 50 years. She formed the Caecilian Choirs, consisting of civilians and members of the 22nd Coast Artillery to sing at Camp Langdon, now New Castle Commons, during the war years.
She played the first Mass at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's new chapel. For five years, she played the 9 a.m. Mass at the Yard and the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Camp Langdon.
She was also organist at Pease Air Force Base Chapel and played at its dedication.
She played at the pontifical jubilee for Msgr. James McCooey and also at his funeral.
She played at the 125th and the 130th anniversary Masses of the parish and the first and the 25th anniversary Masses of the Rev. Frs. Robert Griffin and Michael Griffin. She played at the 25th anniversary Mass of Msgr. John Molan. She also played at the 50th anniversary Mass of Msgr. Belluchio.
She taught music to Grades 5-8 at St. Patrick School in Portsmouth and St. Michael's School in Exeter.
She played at St. Michael's in Exeter for the ordination of David Deveau; Bishop Odore Gendron was the celebrant.
She was organist at St. Patrick summer church on Hampton Beach for several years.
In 1990, she retired from the Immaculate Conception. Upon her retirement, she received an apostolic blessing from Pope John Paul II.
She was organist at countless weddings, funerals and Masses on the Seacoast. Her husband, Howard, a baritone, sang at many of those events.
She was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. She was a member and past president of the church's Altar Society, active with St. Patrick School, and the Catholic Youth Organization at the church. She was a member and past president of the Catholic Women's Organization of the church and was editor of the church's cookbook, Our Daily Bread, in 1980.
She owned and operated EmJay Boutique at Lady Rockingham House (now Rockingham Condominiums) in Portsmouth. She owned and operated La Boutique in Exeter.
An avid traveler, she had been around the world.
In addition to traveling and gourmet cooking, she enjoyed entertaining, home decorating, tailoring and dressmaking, reading and music.
She was the wife of the late Howard C. Jackson.
She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Audrey C. Jackson and Robert L. Koller of Kittery; a son and his wife, William H. and Germaine Jackson of Gorham; a son-in-law, Richard Davis of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Maryfrances Pforte of Dover; Ruth Lockhart of Braintree, Mass.; a brother, William McIntyre of Florida; eight grandchildren, Christine French of Portsmouth, Stephanie Ross of Portsmouth, Sean Davis of Sarasota, Fla., Joseph Jackson of Las Vegas, Christopher Jackson of Keene, David Ross of Plaistow, Daniel Jackson of Gorham and John Jackson of Gorham; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Madeline French, both of Portsmouth.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia (Jackson) Davis, who died in 1997.
