Mary E. Martin
YORK BEACH - Mary E. Martin, 84, of Long Beach Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at York Hospital after a brief period of illness.
Born Jan. 24, 1915, in Chelsea, Mass., she was the daughter of the late James and Mary Bell (Strong) Whittaker. She was a 1933 graduate of Chelsea High School. A hair dressing school graduate, she was one of the first female barbers in Malden, Mass., in 1934.
She lived in Saugus, Mass., from 1941 to 1948; in Melrose, Mass., from 1948 to 1962; in Topsfield, Mass., from 1962 to 1978; and in York Beach from 1978 to the present. She summered at York Beach for the past 77 years.
She was the wife of Milton T. Martin Sr. for 63 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Milton T. "Sandy" Martin Jr. of Durham, Paul J. Martin of Derry, and Dr. Jeffrey E. Martin of Windham, Maine; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Henry J. Tonole
KITTERY - Henry J. Tonole Sr., 93, of 37 Rogers Road, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at The Edgewood Centre after a brief period of illness.
Born Jan. 28, 1906, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Bonelli) Tonole and was educated in Webster, Mass., schools.
He was employed by Connolly Bros. Inc. of Beverly Farms, Mass., from 1929 to 1931. During this time, he constructed swimming pools, tennis courts, and did landscaping. He was employed at Highland Farms, York, from 1931 to 1953. From 1953 until his retirement, he was employed by the John Howells and William Howells families of Kittery Point, and Polly Howells Werthman, Spruce Creek, Kittery Point. He was a very knowledgeable gardener and landscaper.
He was the husband of the late Ann (Fitzgerald) Tonole, who died in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Henry J. Tonole Jr. of East Providence, R.I.; two granddaughters, Karen T. Perry of Carolina R.I., and Pamela Tonole of East Providence, R.I.; and a great-granddaughter, Michaela E. Perry.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, Louis and John, and by his sister, Theresa Tonole Krossner.
Josephine Trefethen
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine (Philbrick) Trefethen, 99, of 22 Tuck Road, Hampton, were held at Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Friday. The Rev. D. Jeffrey Dietrich, pastor of the Bethany Congregational Christian Church in Rye, officiated.
In attendance were representatives from the Bethany Congregational Christian Church, Rye Fire Auxiliary, and the Rye Dining Needle Club.
Burial was in Central Cemetery Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Dietrich.
Bearers were Joshua Trefethen, Glen Trefethen, Gene Trefethen, Keith Trefethen, Quintin Trefethen, and Joe Scnerchia.
Dorothy V. Chaisson
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Dorothy V. (Dixon) Chaisson, 85, of 928 State St., died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at The Edgewood Centre.
Born May 7, 1914, in Holliston, Mass., she was the daughter of Otto and Harriet E. Dixon.
She was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Portsmouth, where she enjoyed many church activities.
She was the wife of the late Gerald Chaisson.
Survivors include a daughter, Celia M. Russell of Kittery; a son, Raymond Chaisson of Kittery, Maine; three grandchildren, Sherri M. Lewis of Greenfield, Mass., Raymond N. Russell of Dover, N.H., and Julie M. Cross of Seabrook; three great-grandchildren, Cameron, Emily and Dylan; a sister, Mildred Haskell of Yarmouth, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Joseph O. Chaisson, in 1986.
Sandra L. Hills
KITTERY POINT - Sandra L. Hills, 48, of 75 Braveboat Harbor Road, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Born July 13, 1951, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Herbert O. Goodwin of Portsmouth and Constance L. (Byers) Gallagher of York Harbor. She was a 1969 graduate of Traip Academy and graduated cum laude from the former Nasson College in Sanford.
She worked at York County Community Action Program as an outreach social worker in the Kittery office, serving the people of York County for the past 18 years.
She was an active member of the Second Christian Congregational Church, Frank E. Booma American Legion Post Auxiliary, Unit No. 6, and the Emerson Hovey VFW Auxiliary Unit No. 168, both of Portsmouth.
She was a founding member of the board of directors of Fair Tide, a nonprofit organization that helps the homeless and low-income families obtain housing. She was a member of the Senior Citizen Health Care Coalition, a member of the steering committee of the Community Wellness Coalition, a member of the board of the Community Health Connection, and served on the policy committee of the York County Child Abuse and Neglect Council.
In addition to her father and mother, survivors include her longtime companion, Arthur Vancour; a daughter, Candice Rogers; and a granddaughter, Chantal Rogers, all of Kittery Point; her stepfather, Robert L. Gallagher of York Harbor, two brothers, Angelo J. Muscarello of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mark T. Muscarello and his wife, Karen, of South Berwick; a sister, Debbie Theriault and her husband, Gerald, of Clearwater, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Christopher W. Daniels
GORHAM, N.H. - Christopher W. Daniels, 25, of 7 Alpine St., died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident on Route 16 in Martins Location, N.H..
Born May 5, 1974, in Berlin, N.H., he was the son of Kim Moulton of Gorham. He was a resident of Gorham and Cape Neddick for most of his life.
He was employed by Fazio's LaStalla in York.
A member of St. Christopher's Church in York, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. His other interests were motorcycle racing, working with animals, weightlifting and spending time with his family.
In addition to his mother, survivors include four sisters, Brittany Moulton, Kamrie Moulton, Kassie Moulton and Ari Moulton, all of Gorham; grandparents, George Cash Daniels of Gorham, and Arnold and Virginia Ellis of Gloucester, Mass., and Shelburne, N.H.; and several aunts, uncles and friends.
Martha A.R. Considine
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - Martha A.R. Considine, 82, of Saugatucket Road, Peace Dale Estates, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence, R.I.
Born June 17, 1917, in Cranston, R.I., she was the daughter of the late Frank H. and Martha B. (Conner) Lindsley. She was a graduate of Hope High School in Providence. She lived in Edgewood, R.I., Warwick Neck, R.I., Saunderstown, R.I., and Durham.
She was a professional model in Providence and Boston for 30 years and had worked for the former Gladdings department store, Shepard's, the Outlet, and Peerless. She had been a secretary for Seacoast Mental Health Center in Portsmouth and was a former member of the National Croquet Association.
She wrote many senior columns for the Narragansett Times. She was a member of the South Kingstown Guild, participating in creative writing classes and was a volunteer waitress for the Pease Dale Estates Association.
She was a communicant of St. Peter's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church.
She was the wife of the late John A. Considine.
Survivors include a son, Richard A. Considine of Rye; two daughters, Caroline E. Considine of Lexington, Mass.; and M. Jane Ruchalski of Houston; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph I. Lindsley; and a sister, Mary E. Tower.
Jeffrey R. Beauchesne
MANCHESTER - Jeffrey R. Beauchesne, 47, of Manchester, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at his residence after a long period of illness.
Born Sept. 26, 1951, he was the son of Lawrence and Lorraine (Hamilton) Beauchesne, he was a lifelong resident of Manchester.
He was a 1969 graduate of Manchester Central High School, where he played basketball.
He attended Keene State College.
He was a licensed and registered optician. He began his career at Granite State Optical Inc., which was founded by his grandfather, Raymond J. Beauchesne.
He later worked with Capital Opticians in Concord and for 12 years with Kittery Optometric Associates in Kittery, Maine.
He was certified by the American Board of Opticianry and was a member of the Opticians Association of America.
He enjoyed golf and had traveled to golf courses throughout New England, Florida and the Washington, D.C. area.
He was the husband of Suzanne C. (Bourque) Beauchesne for 19 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his mother of Hooksett; a stepson, Craig Lavigne of Manchester; two brothers, Eric H. Beauchesne of Waterville, Maine, and Richard S. Beauchesne of Long Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Michelle Pepin of Manchester, and Cheryl Means of North Andover, Mass.; his paternal grandmother, Henrietta Beauchesne of Manchester; his maternal grandmother, Pearl Hamilton of Florida; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
James D. Platt Jr.
HAMPTON - The funeral for James D. "Jidd" Platt Jr., 60, of 9 Hampton Towne Estates, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.
Acolytes were Paul Sullivan, WIlliam Pray and Thomas Gillick. Richard Bateman and Frank Dyer, who also offered words of remembrance, offered the readings.
An honor guard was formed at the church by the Hampton Police Department, which included the mounted patrol both at the church and at the High Street Cemetery where the committal service was conducted by Rev. Ham.
Pallbearers were Frank Dyer, Barry Flynn, Bucky Dalton, Brad Richards, Bill Dupre and Bob Sparkes.
The flag that covered the casket was presented to Mr. Platt's widow, Sheila A. (Sciaba) Platt.
Serena Hurlbert
DURHAM - Serena Coe Paine Hurlbert, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in Exeter.
She was the daughter of Richard and Sarah Crapo Tappan Coe. She grew up in Hyde Park, Mass. and graduated from the Brimmer School and Wheaton College. She spent summers at The Pines, her grandparents' home in Durham, and married Phiilbrook Ten Eyck Paine in 1937.
They resided in Durham for 41 years. They enjoyed cruising the Maine coast, Florida and Bahamas. They were founding members of the Great Bay and Lubberland yacht clubs.
After Phil's death, Serena remarried to Stuart Churchill Hurlbert. Following his death, she moved to Exeter.
Serena was a longtime and upstanding member of the Society of Colonial Dames in New Hampshire and of the Tuesday Afternoon Club of Durham.
She enjoyed her family, her friends, flowers, bridge and her cat.
Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Paine Ford of Durham; son-in-law Daniel Ford of Durham; a granddaughter, Katharine Serena Ford, of Durham; stepchildren Stuart Hurlbert of Delmar, Calif., Cynthia Steil of Boston, Susan Etkind of Cohasset, Mass., and Richard Hurlbert of Rockland, Maine; and five step-grandchildren.
Peter M. Weiers
EXETER - Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Brewitt Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Michael's Church for Peter M. Weiers, of 5 Spruce Court, who died Sept. 10.
The Mass was celebrated by the Rev. John Mazzei, pastor, and burial followed at Exeter Cemetery with the Rev. Mazzei giving committal prayers. The flag was folded and presented to his brother, Patrick Weiers of Arizona. Alfred Copp of the VFW presented the flag.
Bearers were Tim and Kelly McClare, Jerry Weiers, Paul Bristol, Ron Lagasse, Lee Atherton, Neil Mortlock, and Dick Linscott. Also included in attendance were former employees of Exeter & Hampton Electric Co., where Mr. Weiers was employed for many years.
Dorothy V. Chaisson
PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Dorothy V. (Dixon) Chaisson, 85, of 928 South St., were held from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with services at the Advent Christian Church, Portsmouth. The Rev. David S. McCarthy, pastor, officiated. Organist was Priscilla Marshall.
In attendance were members of the church, representatives from Portsmouth Housing Authority, the AARP and the Senior Center.
Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, Maine with committal services by the Rev. McCarthy.
Daniel Rothstein
PORTSMOUTH - Daniel Rothstein, M.D., died in Portsmouth, on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999.
He was born in Manhattan on Feb. 4, 1908, the son of immigrant parents.
He graduated with honors from Alfred University in 1931 and attended medical school in Bonn, Germany. Following the completion of his medical training, he served as a medical officer in the CCC where he met his wife of 37 years, Wrenna Fulton.
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1939 to 1945. He then settled in Rockville Centre, N.Y., where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1973. He served as the island physician at his place of retirement, Mohegan Island, Maine.
He was predeceased by his wife.
Survivors include eight children, Lois Fowler of Kennebunk, John Rothstein of Kittery, Stephen Rothstein of Clinton, Tenn.; Robert Rothstein of Minneapolis, Douglas Rothstein of San Francisco, Samuel Rothstein of St. Louis; Rachel and Rebecca Rothstein of Sarasota, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
