John O. Byrne

KITTERY - John O. (Jack) Byrne, 68, of 9 Prince Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at his home following a brief period of illness.

Born April 14, 1931, in Pittsfield, Mass., he was the son of John and Mary (Burns) Byrne.

He served in the Air Force for 28 years and was stationed throughout the United States, Japan and the Philippines before retiring permanently in the Seacoast area in 1979.

He was the husband of Ruth (Stuesser) Byrne.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children; Colene Byrne-Audet of Clifton Park, N.Y., JIll Plaisted of Kittery, Tim Byrne of Boston, Ellen Byrne of Magnolia, Mass., Nancy Byrne of Belmont, Mass., John M. Byrne of South Berwick, and Christopher Byrne of Newton, Mass.; four sisters, Elizabeth Giovanetti of Pittsfield, Mass., Joan Heaton of Phoenix, Kathryn Connor of Pittsfield, Mass., and Rita Drumm of Great Barrington, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; 31 nieces and nephews, and Nina Sibole of Portsmouth, his longtime companion and close friend of the family.

He is predeceased by a sister, Mary Maloy of Pittsfield, Mass., who died in 1991.

Ellen M. McCue

HAMPTON - Ellen M. McCue, 83, of Mace Road, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at Exeter Healthcare.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. July 3, 1916, she was the daughter of the late James J. and Catherine T. (O'Donnell) McCue.

She was a graduate of Bay Ridge High School in Brooklyn and also a stenotype school in Boston. She also attended the University of New Hampshire.

She worked as a Superior Court stenographer for the state of New Hampshire for 23 years, retiring in 1971 because of a disability. During World War II, she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She lived in Hampton since her retirement, coming from Portsmouth.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and a member of its Catholic Women's Club, a former member of the Altrusa Business Women's Club in Portsmouth and member of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.

Survivors include three sisters; Kathleen Lincoln of Norwalk, Conn., Rita Dufour of Baton Rouge, La., and Venita Brown of Hampton; four brothers, James J. McCue Jr. of Bar Mills, Maine, Patrick McCue of Dover, Eugene McCue of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Dr. John McCue of St. Cloud, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calvin Rolfe

GILFORD, N.H. - Calvin W. Rolfe, 74, of 471 Edgewater Drive, Governor's Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Genesis ElderCare Network, Laconia Center.

Born Oct. 17, 1924, in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of Frederick A. and Mathilda (Furoung) Rolfe. He was the youngest of three children. He attended elementary school in Jersey City until the second grade when his family moved to Lyndhurst, N.J. He graduated from Lyndhurst High School in 1942. In February 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed in the South Pacific as a control tower operator. He was honorably discharged in March 1946.

He attended Bergen Junior College and went on to receive his bachelor's degree in economics from Rutgers in 1950, and his master's degree in education from Plymouth State College in 1952.

In 1951, he was employed in sales for the US Gypsum Co., and in 1952 was a salesman for Fuller Brush. From 1952-1953, he was the principal of the Belmont Elementary School, and from 1953-1955 he was principal at Moultonboro Central School. From 1955-1960, he was principal of the Meredith elementary schools. From 1970-1983, he was vice principal of Interlakes High School in Meredith, and was interim principal at Gilford Middle School in 1985.

He was also owner of the Country Squire Restaurant from 1954-1959; owner of the Laconia Automatic Vending Co. from 1960-1970; publisher of the Lakes Region Home Guide from 1979-1986; and Gentleman Host (Cruise Ships) from 1993-1996.

He was a member and past trustee of the Laconia Congregational Church and a friend and worshiper of the Trinity Episcopal Church-Meredith.

He was past commodore and life member of the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club; current member and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow of the Gilford Rotary Club; past president in 1963 of the Laconia Rotary Club; member of the Meredith Rotary Club; past member of the Laconia Parks & Recreation Commission; corporator of the Lakes Region General Hospital; a charter member of the Laconia Outing Club; member and past president of the Interlakes Teachers Association; and was also a member of the National Education Association and was national delegate for New Hampshire.

He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Kramer) Rolfe, who died in 1988.

Survivors include his children, Addie Rolfe Tarbell of Rye and Thomas Winslow of Manchester; two grandchildren, Lia and Marina Tarbell; a sister, Eleanor Rolfe Henry of New Jersey; a brother, Winston Elwood Rolfe of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and a beloved companion, Carolyn Scattergood of Gilford.

Ellen McCue

McCUE - Ellen M. McCue, of Mace Road, Hampton, died Aug. 30, 1999. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to NH Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 686, Manchester NH 03105.

Josephine M. Connors

PORTSMOUTH - Josephine M. Connors, 86, of 323 Union St., died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born July 15, 1913, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Murphy) Connors. She was a graduate of St. Patrick School, Portsmouth High School's Class of 1930, and the Portsmouth School of Nursing in 1934, which was the last class to attend the old hospital school.

The eldest of six children, she was proud of her position as a registered nurse. She worked in this field for many years as a private-duty nurse. After her retirement, she devoted many years to the Catholic Diocese of Manchester.

She was a lifelong communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Survivors include a sister, Mary R. Stone of Lady Lake, Fla.; a brother, Thomas F. Connors Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Emily T. Connors, and two brothers, John J. Connors and Timothy D. Connors.

Florence E. Graves

HAMPTON - Funeral services for Florence E. Graves, 84, of 22 Post Road, North Hampton, were held Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. Raymond T. Jones, interim pastor at United Church of Christ, North Hampton, officiated. The deceased's nephews, Gary and David Lord, offered the eulogies. The Rev. Dr. Elizabeth J. Walton was organist. Pallbearers were Carl Hebert and Paul Anguin. The funeral procession was led to the cemetery by a 1927 Model T Ford touring car that was a favorite of Mrs. Graves'. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with committal services by the Rev. Jones.

Francis Hett

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Francis H. Hett, 82, of 3 Staples St., Eliot, were held from Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Thursday, with services held at the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Reva Karstens, interim pastor, officiated. Richard Hett and Lynn McLeod gave words of remembrance. June Parker was organist.

Members of the North Congregational Church were in attendance.

Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, with committal services by the Rev. Karstens.

An honor guard was formed by Eliot Post No. 188 American Legion, including George Stark, Carlton Hutchins, John Jeglinski and Del Spinney.

A volley was fired by Eliot Post No. 188, including John S. McIntyre, William Rollins, Allen D. Seesman, Doug Burnell Sr., Charles Spencer and Burky Spooner.

Taps were sounded by Ted Blood.

Bearers were Mark Lariviere, Tim Hett, Chris Hett, John McLeod, Charlene Lariviere and Mathew Lariviere.

Mary Jean Gleason

EXETER - Mary Jean Gleason (Gina Maria Rigali), of 7 Riverwoods Drive, died Aug. 30, 1999, in Exeter.

Born Aug. 7, 1902, in Barga, Province of Lucca, Italy, beloved daughter of Louis and Maria Luchini Rigali, she emigrated to the United States in 1918, settling in the Connecticut Valley.

In 1931, she married Dr. Charles A. Gleason and moved to Northampton, Mass. For the next 50 years, she was the leading hostess of that city, known for her elegance, spirit and community service. She was a talented water colorist and, with her husband, an avid world traveler.

In 1981, she moved with her husband to North Hampton, N.H., residing at 175 Atlantic Ave., until she moved to RiverWoods At Exeter retirement community in 1994.

In Massachusetts, she led many civic projects to completion, was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the "100 Club" of Northampton, the Northampton Country Club, and was a charter member of the Valley District Dental Women's Association. She was treasurer of the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Volunteers for more than 20 years.

In New Hampshire, she was one of the Seacoast's most accomplished bridge players, winning just two weeks prior to her death. She was a past member of the Rye Beach Club, Abenaki Country Club, Rye Women's Club and Rye Garden Club.

She was a cherished summer guest at Wentworth by the Sea for more than 15 years, was a Paul Harris Fellow and a devout Roman Catholic.

Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Alessandra Domina of Portsmouth; a grandson, James Barker Smith III of Athens, Ga.; two nephews, William Luchini Sr. of South Hadley, Mass., and Dr. Louis Rigali of Holyoke, Mass; a niece, Lois Jean Luchini Fenoglio of Marietta, Ga., and several beloved great-nieces and great-nephews.

Evamae Sanborn

SARASOTA, Fla. - Evamae Sanborn, 78, of the Jefferson Center, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at Hospice of Southwest Florida.

Born May 11, 1921, in Exeter, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Grant Berry and Eva May (McKenna) Sanborn.

She was a 1940 graduate of Robinson Female Seminary and a chief petty officer in the Navy during World War II.

She was clerk of Exeter's selective service office during the Korean conflict, and was employed by Phillips Exeter Academy, the University of New Hampshire, Harvard and Stanford universities, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in Florida.

She attended the Congregational Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Laura Barbara Sanborn Adams of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Ann Sanborn Maloney of Exeter; two brothers, John Newell Sanborn of Unity, Maine, and David George Sanborn of Bellevue, Neb.; several nieces and nephews and their families; and aunts, cousins and an uncle.

She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Sanborn Connor, and two brothers, Grant Berry Sanborn Jr. and Ronald Paul Sanborn.

A memorial service will be held in Exeter at a later date.

Sally B. Woodward

NOTTINGHAM - The funeral for Sally B. Woodward, 87, of 15 Swan Drive, was held Tuesday in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

The Rev. Edward Whitman of the First Congregational Church, Barrington, officiated.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal prayers by the Rev. Whitman.

Pallbearers were Robert Dockham, Joel Dockham, Keith Dockham, Shawn Dockham, Bruce Dockham, Doug Inman, and Ben Inman.

Patricia A. Porter

PORTSMOUTH - Patricia A. Porter, 54, of 245 Middle St., died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at her home.

She was born Aug. 22, 1945, in Rutland, Vt. She was a Portsmouth resident for the past seven years.

She was active in Operation Blessing.

Survivors include three sons, Matthew Porter of Greenland, Shawn Porter of Colony, N.Y., and Edward Porter of Rutland; two grandchildren, Matthew Porter Jr., and Kyle Fletcher.

Edith C. McCaddin

PORTSMOUTH - Edith C. McCaddin, 79, of 346 Pleasant St., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at the Mark Wentworth Home.

Born July 27, 1920, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Stromblad) Wahlman.

She was raised in Newton Four Corners and was a graduate of Newton High School. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Radcliffe College and attended graduate school at the University of New Hampshire.

She taught for many years at Pease Air Force Base in the adult education program. She later worked for Foster's Daily Democrat in Dover. She was a former member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Durham.

She was the wife of the late Robert C. McCaddin.

Survivors include two sons, Mark S. McCaddin of Hampton and James R. McCaddin of Durham; a daughter, Edie C. McCaddin of Durham; three grandchildren, Kathleen Ann Kishbaugh, Deborah McCaddin, and Suzanne McCaddin; a sister, Barbro Widmark of Dover and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Jean Gleason

GLEASON - Mary Jean Gleason, 97, died Aug. 30, 1999. Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday (today) at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Burial will be private in Northampton, Mass. Memorial donations may be sent to St. Anthony's Shrine, 100 Arch St., Boston, MA 02107.

John K. Tabor

John K. Tabor, 78, died Sept. 6, 1999, following a stroke. He was an attorney and former U.S. undersecretary of commerce. He was the father of John K. Tabor Jr. of Portsmouth, publisher of the Herald.

A native of Pittsburgh, Mr. Tabor served in two Republican administrations in Harrisburg during the 1960s. He was a 1943 Yale graduate and received his L.L.B. from Harvard Law School in 1952. In World War II, he was a Navy lieutenant in command of a fleet mine sweeper.

He is survived by his wife, Kate Williams Tabor; his two sons, John of Portsmouth and William H. Tabor of Alexandria, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Geneva M. "Jean" Tobin

HAMPTON - Geneva M. "Jean" Tobin, 66, of 6 Roberts Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born April 3, 1933, in Augusta, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Alcide and Emily (Nadeau) Cote. Raised in Augusta, she had resided in Hampton for the past 29 years, moving there from Scarborough, Maine.

She attended Cony High School in Augusta and had worked for several years in her father's restaurant.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton.

She was the wife of Dennis H. Tobin of Hampton for 36 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Shawn D. Tobin of Rye; two daughters, Emily R. Carroll of Exeter, and Kari J. Morrill of Raymond; three grandchildren, Emma Jean Morrill, Owen Carroll and Gillian Carroll; two brothers, Carlton Cote of Augusta, Maine, and Alton Cote of China, Maine; a sister, Carmeline LaVerdiere of Lynn, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Rose Cote, in 1989.
