Nancy W. Pacheco
HAMPTON - Nancy W. Pacheco, 69, of 384 Winnacunnet Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at her home.
Born Jan. 20, 1930, in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Vern and Pauline (Brown) Wright.
She graduated from Hampton Academy with the Class of 1947.
In 1960, she and her husband founded Modern Radio & Television. They operated it until their retirement in 1979.
Since 1989, she spent winters in Leesburg, Fla. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton.
She was the wife of Leo Pacheco for 38 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a stepson, Donald Pacheco of Chelsea, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Mary Lou Pacheco of North Hampton; five stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Pamela Pacheco, in 1996; and by her brother, Albert Wright.
Kathleen A. Longo
EXETER - The funeral for Kathleen A. Longo, 56, wife of Joseph C. Longo of 22 Locust Ave., was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Michael Church in Exeter. The Rev. John Mazzei, associate pastor, was celebrant.
Ted Klemarczyk and Ray Russell were acolytes. Denise Kelly was organist, and John Kelly was pianist and soloist. The readings were offered by Ann Landry and Sue Sweeney.
David Landry offered the Prayer of the Faithful. Mary Landry delivered the eulogy.
Pallbearers were Al Longo, Frederick Longo, Michael Longo, Charles Landry, Joseph Moceli and Henry Mixter.
Cremation followed in the Phoenix Crematory, Hampton.
The Very Rev. Maurice J. Rochefort, V.F.
EXETER - The Very Rev. Maurice J. Rochefort, V.F., 60, pastor of St. Michael Church, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, while canoeing on Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham.
Born Aug. 6, 1939, in West Campton, he was the son of the late Maurice J. and Agnes Rose (Ivers) Rochefort.
He graduated from Sherbrook High School, Sherbrook, Canada; received his bachelor's degree from the Seminary of Sherbrook; and his master's degree in divinity from St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore .
He was ordained to the priesthood May 28, 1966, by the Most Rev. Ernest J. Primeau, S.T.D., at St. Joseph Cathedral, Manchester.
On June 11, 1975, he was appointed associate pastor at St. Rose of Lima, Littleton, with part-time ministry at the Christian Life Center, Franconia Deanery; on Jan. 22, 1977, he was appointed administrator at St. Rose of Lima Parish; on March 1, 1977, he was appointed administrator of Sacred Heart Parish, North Stratford. On May 9, 1980, he was appointed pastor at both St. Francis Parish, Groveton, and Sacred Heart Parish, North Stratford. On June 24, 1987, he became pastor of St. Michael Parish, Exeter.
He also served as dean of the Franconia Deanery from Dec. 3, 1979 to Dec. 3, 1982; and as diocesan consultor from Jan. 18, 1980 to Dec. 3, 1982. He was appointed as dean of the Salem deanery on Oct. 30, 1997 and held that position until his death.
He also served as diocesan chaplain of the Cursillo for several years.
Survivors include his sister, Rita C. Mailhot of Epping; a niece, Debbie L. Mailhot of Tilton; five nephews, James W. Pettengill of Newmarket, Mark J. Pettengill of Newfields, Charles P. Pettengill of Madbury, Willis J. Mailhot of Epping, and Kenneth Mailhot of Epping.
He was predeceased by a sister, Leona R. Pettengill.
Tom Massingham
DOVER - Tom Massingham, 77, of 800 Central Ave., died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center .
Born Dec. 17, 1921, in Marske by Sea, Yorkshire, England, he was the son of John and Mary (Holly) Massingham.
At the age of 5, he came to Dover. He traveled in the company of a 9-year-old boy coming to Cambridge, Mass. The two boys were alone under the charge of a flight attendant. He was raised in Dover by his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Shortridge.
He attended Dover schools through Grade 8, then attended the Goodwill School in Hinkley, Maine. He returned to Dover and worked at the family-owned greenhouse until 1942. He then entered the Army and served on board U.S. transports in the Army amphibious forces. During World War II, he served in England, France, North Africa and the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1945 with six battle stars.
After the war, he returned to Dover and went back into the family greenhouse business; he took over ownership in 1946. For 48 years, he and his first wife owned and operated the Garrison Hill Greenhouse. In 1994, the business was turned over to their son.
He was an honorary member and past president of the Dover Kiwanis Club; a life member of the Dover Lodge of Elks; a life member of the Dover Post No. 8 American Legion; and a member of the Retired Florist Association. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Browne Massingham, who died in 1990.
He was the husband of Carol (Boulanger) Massingham.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Beth M. Bennett; a son, Thomas B. Massingham; two grandsons, George Webster Massingham and Preston Massingham, all of Dover; a sister, Marge Connely of South Shields, England; a stepbrother, Charles Daynes of Guisborough, England; a stepson, Roger Wolford of Dover; two stepdaughters, Tammy Demeritt of Somersworth and Sheila Braski of Northwood; several stepgrandchildren; and five cousins.
LITTLEFIELD - A memorial service for Arthur B. Littlefield, 58 Fernald Crossing, Wolfeboro, who died Jan. 29, 1999, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Wolfeboro Centre Community Church, Route 109, Wolfeboro, NH.
Merle L. Gilman
HAMPTON - Services for Merle L. Gilman, 89, of Hampton, formerly of Newington, were held Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.
The Rev. Dennis Marasco, pastoral counselor at the Bethany Congregational Church, officiated.
Jean Goss was organist.
Burial was in Newington Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Marasco.
Samuel Scott Furber Jr.
HOUSTON - Samuel Scott Furber Jr., 68, of 5406 Crown Colony, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at his home after a brief battle with cancer.
Born April 1, 1931, in York, Maine, he was the son of the late Samuel Scott Furber Sr. and Elsie Kimball Furber.
After graduating from York High School in 1948, he attended the University of New Hampshire. He graduated from the university's School of Engineering in 1953. He served as an officer in the Army from 1953 to 1955, and was stationed in the U.S. and England. Before retiring in 1991, he was employed by Shell Oil Co. for 36 years. At the time of his retirement, he was an operations manager in Houston.
He was a member of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge No. 198 A F & A M in York; Maine Royal Arch Chapter No. 73, Kittery, Maine; St. Armand Commandery No. 020, West Kennebunk, Maine; and Kora Temple of A.A.O.N.M.S., Lewiston, Maine.
He was the husband of Carol Furber.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Christopher of Dallas ; a daughter, Julie of Houston; a sister, Patricia Chase and her husband, Chester, of Cape Neddick, Maine; a brother, Carter Furber and his wife, Carolyn, of York; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Fred Clark of Waterville, Maine; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joyce and George Avery of Brewer, Maine; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harry and Betty Tyler of Calais, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
James R. Glidden
NEWINGTON - James R. Glidden, 77, of 19 Coleman Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at his home.
Born Dec. 16, 1921, in Woodville, Maine, he was the son of Benjamin and Geneva R. (Lancaster) Glidden. He was a graduate of Winn High School in Winn, Maine.
During World War II, he served in the Navy.
Before retiring in 1984, he worked as a machinist for GTE.
He was a member of North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM in Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. Consistory 32 degree of Nashua; Bektash Shrine in Concord; Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 Order of the Eastern Star; NH LST Association; and Port City Chapter No. 3 DAV.
He was formerly a fireman for the Newington Fire Department.
He was the husband of the late Jean (Parslow) Glidden.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda L. McMillen and her husband, Rex D., of Portsmouth, and Terri-Lynn Lyon and her husband, Richard E., of Newington; five grandchildren, Brenda McCallister and Patricia Lyon of Graceville, Fla., Tania Lyon, Darlene Lyon and Gary Lyon, all of Newington; a great-granddaughter, Brittany McCallister of Graceville; and a brother, Ensley J. Tibbetts of Newington.
Harry E. Wallingford Sr.
ROCHESTER - Harry Erving Wallingford Sr., 59, of 22 Old Dover Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at his home following a long period of illness.
Born Dec. 25, 1939, in Lebanon, Maine, he was the son of the late Alfred Sr. and Emily (Fogg) Wallingford.
He lived in Rochester for the past 39 years, after moving from Farmington.
During the Vietnam era, he served in the Army.
He worked construction at the Rochester Sand and Gravel Co.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0060 in Farmington.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and gardening.
He was the husband of Ruth (Berry) Wallingford for 40 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Harry E. Wallingford Jr. and his wife, Beth, of Milton, and Scott A. Wallingford and his wife, Stefanie, of Rochester; a granddaughter, Kelsey A. Wallingford of Milton; four brothers, Lewellyn Wallingford of Portsmouth, Clifford Wallingford of Somersworth, Roger Wallingford of Middleton, and Herbert Wallingford of Lebanon, Maine; and six sisters, Francis Gale of St. Petersburg, Fla., Mary Thibedeu of Lebanon, Maine, Harriet Wallingford and Edith Richardson, both of Farmington, Judy McCarthy of Rhode Island, and Barbara Boudreau of Lowell, Mass.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Wallingford and Alfred Wallingford Jr.
There will be no calling hours. A private family graveside service will be held.
Roland J. Paquette
RYE - Roland Joseph Paquette, 83, of 400 Brackett Road, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at the Webster at Rye Nursing Home after a long period of illness.
Born in Manchester, he was the son of the late Joseph Paquette of Chester and Marie Ida (Bourassa) Paquette of Manchester.
During World War II, he served in the Navy. He worked as a GS 12 inspector of quality insurance at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until he retired in 1971.
He was a former member of the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks and the American Legion.
He was the husband of Madeleine Gertrude (West) Paquette.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Robert J. Paquette of Vero Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Joanne Nichols of Rye; a granddaughter, Michelle Kroitzsh; three grandsons, Rene, Robert and Allan Paquette; and a great-grandchild, Morgan Kroitzsh.
John Shea
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for John "Jack" Shea, 68, of 106 Wentworth Road, were held Aug. 5, 1999. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Edward J. Kelley.
Eileen Foley was lector. Marion Arnoldy was organist, and Jennifer Sanders was soloist.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, with the Rev. Kelley conducting the committal.
Pallbearers were John Barnes, Edward McAskill, William K. Gum Jr., Edward W. Storer, Edward A. Storer and Kathy M. Storer.
Piscataqua Chapter Disabled American Veterans conducted services Wednesday evening at the Farrell Funeral Home.
Angela B. Stroup
FRANCONIA - Angela B. (Ruppert) Stroup, 71, of 348 Wells Road, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at home following a long period of illness.
Born Jan. 5, 1928, in Cumberland, Md., she was a daughter of Frederick A. and Caroline (Staarmann) Ruppert. She was a 1946 graduate of Girls Central High School, Cumberland, Md., and the Thompson School of Business, Philadelphia.
In 1953 she married Ira D. Stroup, also of Cumberland, and moved to Franconia where they managed the Horse & Hound Inn from 1953 on, assuming ownership in 1966 until retiring from innkeeping in 1975. After 1975, she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at various local businesses and was the cook at the Old Colony Ski Club in North Woodstock for 15 years.
She was former selectwoman for the town of Franconia; a member and lector of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Franconia; and a long time volunteer for Child and Family Services of New Hampshire.
Her many interests included antiques and collectibles, rug braiding, cooking, gardening, politics and travel.
Family members include daughters, Mary Ruppert, Martha McLeod and husband Richard, Jayne O'Connor and husband William, all of Franconia; Katherine Stroup and husband Richard Segal of Lee; a son, George Stroup and wife Kim of Franconia; brothers Thomas Ruppert and wife Elaine of LaVale, Md., Frederick Ruppert and wife Janet of Longbeach, N.C.; sisters, Kathleen Mikowski of Southampton, Pa., and Joan Lancaster of LaVale, Md.; nine grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1976 and by a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Stroup, of Franconia, in 1986.
