Robert S. Hawkins
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A graveside service for Robert S. Hawkins, 61, formerly of Belmont, N.H. and Exeter, who died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, was held today in the Hampton (Va.) Veterans Memorial Gardens.
Born in Slater, S.C., he was the son of Stanley and Dorothy Hawkins of Newport News, Va. He had been a resident of Williamsburg for two years.
He had been employed with Laconia Peoples Bank and Trust before establishing Bob Hawkins Realty.
A member of the New Hampshire General Court for 14 years, he chaired the House Executive Departments and Administration Committee for two years and the Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitation Services Committee for the next 10 years. Committed to childhood education, he lead the fight for public kindergarten.
His numerous legislative awards include the Friend of Education Award, the highest award given by NEA-NH; and commendations from the Firefighters of New Hampshire, the Policemen's Association and the State Employees Association.
He held the office of national director of the N.H. Jaycees, and received numerous awards in Virginia and New Hampshire, including Outstanding Jaycee of the Year, Outstanding State Officer, and the highest Jaycee award, the J.C.I. He was an active member of the Laconia/Gilford and Exeter Lions clubs, where he received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest Lions International award. He held many different offices on the Lions Camp Pride board of directors, including that of president. He also served as president of The Lakes Region Toastmasters Club, Lakes Region United Way and United Way of New Hampshire, and as vice chair for the N.H. March of Dimes.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two sons, Robert S. Hawkins Jr. of Athens, Ga., and Joseph T. Hawkins of Boston; a sister, Debbie Compton and her husband, Ricky, of Newport News; several nieces and nephews; and his significant other, Barbara Young, of Exeter.

Jane B. Conant
PORTSMOUTH - Jane B. Conant, of 154 South St., died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at her home.
Born July 8, 1927, in Boston, she was the only child of Harry W. and Madeleine J. (Conant) Conant. She attended Boston public schools, was a member of the Class of 1949 at the University of New Hampshire, and a graduate of Leland Powers School of Radio and Theater in Boston.
Prior to moving to Portsmouth in 1986, she had a home in Mont Vernon, N.H., for more than 50 years.
An active member of Mont Vernon life, she was the first woman selectman; served as a Daland Memorial Library trustee; and was on the Historic District and Lamson Farm commissions. She was a founding member of the Purgatory Players, an amateur theater group of the 1960s.
Marjorie L. MacDormand
HAMPSTEAD - Marjorie L. MacDormand, 60, of 40 Bricketts Mill Road, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry.
Born Dec. 13, 1938, in Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of Lillis (Freeman) MacDormand of North Hampton and the late Kenneth F. MacDormand. She resided in Hampstead for the past 12 years, moving from Concord and, before that, North Hampton.
In addition to her mother, survivors include five brothers, Allister F. MacDormand of Bethel, Maine, H. Bruce MacDormand of North Hampton, Malcolm L. MacDormand of New Durham, N.H., Royce D. MacDormand of Hampton, and Eric W. MacDormand of North Hampton; one sister, Maxine Smith of Nova Scotia; and several nieces and nephews.
Harry S. Kulp
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Harry S. Kulp, 93, of 143 Rogers Road, Meeting House Village, Kittery, were held Wednesday from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with services at Bethany Congregational Christian Church. The Rev. D. Jeffrey Dietrich, pastor, officiated.
Soloist was Justin Yim. Organist was Jan Stover. Words of remembrance were given by Audrey Link, daughter of the deceased; Kirby Link, grandson; the Rev. Dennis Marasco of Bethany Congregational Church; and the Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth.
In attendance were members of the church; representatives from Meeting House Village; the Seacoast Men's Discussion Group; and family, friends and neighbors.
Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Dietrich. Bearers were Ronnie Kulp, son of the deceased; Jay Link II and Kirby Link, grandsons; Adrian Link and Connor Link, great-grandsons; and Mark Brenner and James Marchese, friends.
Leonard T. Parker
BRENTWOOD - Leonard T. Parker, 89, of 117 North Road, formerly of 263 Rockland St., Portsmouth, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.
Born Jan. 6, 1910, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Joseph N. and Nellie (Trefethren) Parker.
During World War II he served in the Army.
Before his retirement he was employed in maintenance at the former Kearsarge Hotel.
He was a member of the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 and the American Legion of Portsmouth. He was a volunteer for the Margeson Apartments Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret Parker Dockham of Rye; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Newick Kober.
Frances E. McFarland
RYE - Frances E. McFarland, 91, of 1324 Ocean Blvd., died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 17, 1907, in Concord, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Ordway) Morton.
She was a graduate of Concord High School, and a 1928 graduate of Wheelock College in Boston. She taught school for a short time before getting married. In 1957 she moved to Rye from Concord. From 1960 to the mid-1970s, she and her husband owned and operated the Suez Motel in Daytona Beach, Fla.
She was a member of the N.H. Audubon Society, the Junior Service League of Concord, and the Flower Mission of Concord.
She was the wife of Donald J. McFarland for 52 years. He died in 1981.
Survivors include a son, Henry O. McFarland of Rye; two grandchildren, Susan M. Moynahan of Rye, and Jay D. McFarland of Greenland; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Shannon and Peter Moynahan, and Tyler and Ian McFarland.
Meg L. Kearns
EXETER - Meg L. Kearns, 22, of 1 Robin Lane, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at her residence after a long period of illness.
She was born Jan. 31, 1977, in Portsmouth.
She was a 1995 graduate of Exeter High School and was a senior at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. She was a student and a musician.
Survivors include her father, Peter F. Kearns; her mother, Elease C. Latimer of Exeter; two sisters, Elizabeth Kearns Malloy of Rhode Island, and Kristen Kearns Jordan of New York City; and her paternal grandmother, Mary Kearns of Manchester.
Eric J. Campbell
YORK BEACH - Eric J. Campbell, 22, of 85 Dean Road, died Friday, July 9, 1999, in York.
Born Jan. 14, 1977, in Malden, Mass., he was the son of Robert J. and Debra A. (Mollins) Campbell. In 1995 he graduated from York High School. He enjoyed traveling.
In addition to his parents of York Beach, survivors include a brother, Shawn Michael Campbell of York Beach; a sister, Tara Ann Campbell of York Beach; paternal grandmother, Jane (Prince) Sullivan of Melrose, Mass.; maternal grandmother, Edna M. Mollins of Melrose, Mass.; and several aunts and uncles.
Eleanor L. Hopkins
KITTERY - Eleanor L. (Scruton) Hopkins, 86, of 21 Manson Ave., died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at York Hospital in Maine.
Born Feb. 2, 1913, in Wendell, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Theron and Nellie (Nelson) Scruton.
She was a 44-year member of the First Baptist Church in North Attleboro, Mass.
She was self-employed as a housekeeper in Massachusetts for 44 years.
She was the wife of Robert W. Hopkins.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Shirley Clegg of Kittery; two grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Scruton of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Eva Stone of Unity, N.H., and Gladys LaClair of Cornish Flat, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
Bradley E. Weeks
EXETER - Bradley Earle Weeks, 76, of Exeter, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, of complications of Shy-Drager syndrome.
Born in 1923 in Portsmouth, he was one of 11 children.
He was a sportsman for most of his life. At Portsmouth High School he played on the basketball and track and field teams. In his later years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gold. In his early 70s, the southpaw scored his first hole in one at Candlewood Golf Club in Ipswich, Mass.
He completed 30 years of service at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, starting his career as a pipe fitter's apprentice, working his way up to design before retiring in the early '70s. His career took him all over the world, to Hawaii, London, Scotland and France.
Always in the company of his loved ones, he was a literary man who could often be found reading to his children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. Reciting poems, limericks and fables largely from memory, he put smiles on many a child's face. He was an intelligent man of strong will and character. He was loved and will be missed.
Of all the things in his life, he most cherished his family.
He was the husband of Jane Weeks for 54 years, and the father of five. His beloved Tommy died in 1975.
In addition to his wife of Exeter, he is survived by his daughters Muriel Hayden of Greenland, Patricia Bernier of Newmarket, Stephanie Hobbs of Louisville, Ky., and Tracy Parenteau of Nottingham; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers; and five sisters.
John L. Carville Jr.
WOLFEBORO - John L. Carville Jr., 72, of Christian Ridge, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro.
Born in Farmington, Maine, he had lived in Portsmouth and Wolfeboro for most of his life.
During World War II, he served with the Navy in the Pacific. For more than 20 years he was employed by Brewster Academy.
He was the husband of the late Jean (Lance) Carville.
Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Carville of Wolfeboro; a sister, Elaine Marconi of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth I. Bowden
KITTERY - Ruth I. Bowden, 81, of 2 Lemont Lane, died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.
Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Newport, N.H., she was the daughter of James E. and Carrie G. (Hurd) Crawford.
She was a member of the Nazarene Church of Eliot. She was an excellent homemaker and an especially good cook.
She was the wife of Henry Bowden Sr. for 58 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Henry Bowden Jr. of Kittery; and many nieces and nephews.
William H. Eckhart
GREENLAND William H. Eckhart, 82, of 100 Post Road, died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at his home.
Born Oct. 22, 1916 in Newfoundland, N.J., he was the son of the late Harry S. and Mary L. (Van de Mark) Eckhart. He was a 1934 graduate of South Kingstown High in Wakefield, R.I., a 1938 graduate of Rhode Island State College, a 1964 graduate of George Washington University, and a 1964 graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 35 years, serving as chief design engineer from 1958 to 1967. In 1967, he was first chief engineer of Pera.
He received the Distinguished Civilian Service Award in 1962, and the Superior Civilian Award in 1973.
He was a past master of the Naval Lodge No. 184 AF & AM of Kittery, a member of the Maine Royal Arch Chapter No. 73 of Kittery, a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and a life member of NARFE.
He was the husband of Theresa Jean (Oakes) Eckhart for 58 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas William Eckhart of Portsmouth, and Robert Charles Eckhart of Reseda, Calif.; two grandsons, Aaron Richards of Burlington, Vt., and Justin B. Richards of Honolulu; a son-in-law, Peter B. Richards of Bradford, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Olive Eckhart Richards, and a sister, Frances Eckhart.
