Alice C. Sweeley
ROCKPORT, Mass. - Alice C. Sweeley, 91, formerly of 43 Mount Pleasant St., died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Buckley Nursing Home in Greenfield.
Born on February 29, 1908, in Eliot, she was the daughter of the late Fred H. and Amy O. (Goodwin) Wilson.
In 1926, she graduated from Eliot High School. In 1929 she graduated from the Somerville Hospital School of Nursing.
While residing in Somerville, she was a nursing supervisor at the Somerville Hospital from 1930 to 1941. In 1967, she relocated to Rockport. In 1990, she relocated to the Greenfield area where she lived for the rest of her life.
She enjoyed traveling and gardening, and was active in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Gloucester, Mass.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Crawford K. Sweeley, in 1966.
Survivors include a son, Crawford K. Sweeley of Greenfield.
A private burial will be held on Wednesday, June 2. Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery, Greenfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St., Gloucester, Mass. 01930.
Thelma J. Fields
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Thelma J. Fields, of Portsmouth, were held Wednesday, May 19, 1999. Graveside services were conducted by the Rev. Edward Parker of the Seacoast Community Church. Honorary pallbearers were Karyl Horn, Patti Peters, Patty Bancewicz, Patty Belleville and June Daly.
American Legion Post No. 6 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 168 conducted services Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at the Farrell Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with the following members in attendance:

Alice K. Hurley
PORTSMOUTH -- Alice K. Hurley, 86, of 302 McKinley Road, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born June 24, 1912, in Kittery, she was the daughter of William and Mamie (Middlebrook) Hurley. She attended Kittery schools; graduated from Chelsea Memorial Hospital Nurses training program in Chelsea, Mass., in 1935; and received further training at Simmons College in Boston and New York Orthopedic Hospital.
A lieutenant colonel, she entered the Army in 1942, serving as a medical surgical nurse. She was stationed in the Pacific theater during World War II and in Korea during the Korean War. As a medical surgical nurse supervisor, she retired from the service in 1965 after 23 years of service.
She worked at Deaconess Hospital in Boston.
She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and gardening.
Survivors indude a sister, Mamie Varney of Kittery; and two nephews, Basil R. Varney and his wife, Mary, of Portsmouth, and Douglas Hurley of Lexington, Ky.
Helen McClellan
KITTERY -- Helen L. McClellan, 91, of 143 Rogers Road, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at York Hospital.
Born July 22, 1907, in Exeter, she was the daughter of Marion H.Taylor and Nellie A. Rowell. She attended Lowell, Mass., public schools; and graduated from Lowell High School in 1925, Mass College of Art in 1929 with a bachelor of science degree and from New York University with a master's degree.
Until 1965, she was the art supervisor for all grades in Greenwich, Conn. She also taught at Berkshire Christian College in Lenox, Mass., for 18 years until retiring.
She enjoyed going with her friends to the Kittery Meal Site and Meeting House in Kittery. She attended the Advent Christian Church of Portsmouth and was a member of the Christian Women's Club.
She was the wife of the late Elmer McClellan.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Madison Taylor of York.
Gregory J. Saunsen
STRATHAM -- Gregory J. Saunsen, 78, of 6 Brown Ave., died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Exeter Healthcare, Inc.
Born March 24, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Charles M. and Sarah (Whiston) Saunsen. He was raised by his aunt, the late Ann L. Whiston. He graduated from Regis High School in Manhattan, N.Y., and Fordham University in New York City. He lived in Stratham since 1994, coming from Carmel, N.Y., and from Kings Park, Long Island, N.Y., where he lived for 21 years.
A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he served in the Army and later in the Army Reserve, retiring with 20 years of service.
For 38 years, he worked as an analyst for Texaco in the New York City office and in the White Plains, N.Y., office for nine years, retiring in 1986.
He was the husband of the late Ethel G. (Barrios) Saunsen, who died in April 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Lori A. Macnaughton of Stratham; a son, Eugene J. Saunsen of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Saunsen of Long Island; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Gregory J. Saunsen Jr., in 1991.
John C. Ture
KITTERY -- John Currier True, 79, of 11 Old Ferry Lane, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at York Hospital.
Born Feb. 2, 1920, in West Epping, he was the son of Edmund C. and Agnes P. (Kelley) True. He graduated from R.W. Traip Academy, Kittery, in 1938.
A veteran, he served in the Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the USS Pittsburgh and the USS Philadelphia.
For more than 34 years, he worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker and a nuclear supervisor inspector.
He was a member of the Naval Masonic Lodge No. 184 AF & AM in Kittery.
He was the husband of Margaret (Patch) True for 57 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, John S. True and his wife of Portsmouth and Robert O. True and his wife of Springfield, Maine; a brother, Harry F. True of Kittery Point; two sisters, Evelyn Abbott of Kittery Point and Mary Hoar of Kittery Point; six granddaughters, Johna Delano of Springvale, Maine, Sara Schoedinger of North Berwick, Carol Morley of York, Sharene Obrey of Eliot, Christina Williams of Porter, Texas, and Leslie True of Gresham, Ore.; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Joseph R.M. Verreault
PORTSMOUTH - Joseph Raymond Marcel Verreault, 48, of 1338 Woodbury Ave., died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 28, 1950, in Lewiston, Maine, he was the son of Marcel and Jeannette (Lagace) Verreault. He had resided in Portsmouth for the last 30 years. During that time, he was employed at Simplex as a welder.
He enjoyed beachcombing and was an outdoors enthusiast.
Survivors include three sisters, Lorrain O'briant of Bay City, Mich., Lucille Pitman of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Costance Duncan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
Simone Normand Scott
BEDFORD - Simone Normand Scott, 85, formerly of Pearl Manor and 397 Kelley St., died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at Ridgewood Center in Bedford.
Born Aug. 26, 1913, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Leonce and Marie (Vincent) Normand. She had been a lifelong resident of the city. She attended the Presentation of Mary Schools in Manchester, Hudson and in St. Hyacinthe, Province of Quebec, Canada. She was a graduate of Hesser Business College and attended Stoneleigh College in Rye Beach.
She worked at Dean's Floor Coverings during the 1960s and 1970s.
She was the wife of the late Joseph Scott, who died in 1994.
Family members include four daughters, Sister Joyce Scott, RSM, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Andre (Caryl) Thibodeau of Exeter, Mrs. Gerald (Sheila) Kearney of Denver, and Bette-Jo Scott of Manchester (and her partner, Judy Conley); seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Beatrice N. Quirin of Manchester; a cousin and lifelong friend, Therese Raiche of Manchester; several nephews and nieces.
Mary D. Arthurs
YORK - Mary Day Arthurs, 73, of 110 Scotland Bridge Road, died Tuesday, June 1, at York Hospital after a lengthy period of illness.
Born May 30, 1926, in Boothbay, Maine, she was the daughter of Fred and Ernestine (Bracy) Day. She was a 1943 graduate of York High School.
For 15 years, she was employed at Mr. Brands Salads of Portsmouth.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit, the Boardman-Ellis Post 6977 VFW Auxiliary, and was an original member of York Community Service in the 1960s.
She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years.
She was the wife of the late Harry Willis Arthurs, who died in 1986.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jane Krueger of York and Mrs. David (Linda) Moulton of Kittery; two brothers, Warren P. Day of Eliot and Richard A. Day of Dover; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert and Giles Day, and by a sister, Lilla Francina Day.
Herbert J. DeGraffe Sr.
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Technical Sgt. Herbert J. DeGraffe Sr., 65, of 34 Mason Ave., were held from Buckminster Chapel Wednesday, June 2, 1999, with services at the New Hope Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Arthur L. Hilson, pastor, officiated. Deacon Nathaniel Holloway gave the Prayer of Consolation. Readings were given by Jarvis Williamson and Aaron Snowden. Organist was Courtney Holloway, and percussionist was David Hilson. Usher was Jarvis Williamson. Bearers at the church were Aaron DeGraffe, Sylvester Dye Jr., Johnny Joplan, Adrian DeGraffe, Patrick Fealey and Robert Martell. Honorary bearer was Paul Rose Jr.
In attendance were members of the church.
An honor guard was formed at Harmony Grove Cemetery by the Hanscom AFB Patriot Honor Guard under the direction of Officer in Charge 1st Lt. John Dukes, including 2nd Lt. Stan Masek, Staff Sgt. B.J. Bijole III, SRA Paul C. Raczynski, SRA Mark Felix, SRA Wendy MAck, SRA Ra Schmidt and Airman 1st Class James Fraser.
Bearers were Bijole, Raczynski, Felix, Mack, Schmidt and Fraser.
The flag that draped the casket was folded by Bijole, Raczynski, Felix, Mack, Schmidt and Fraser, under the direction of Masek.
A volley was fired by Bijole, Raczynski, Felix, Mack, Schmidt and Fraser, under the direction of Masek.
Ted Blood sounded taps.
The flag was presented to the deceased's wife, Mrs. Marie (Thompkins) DeGraffe, by Dukes.
Hilson held wake services at Buckminster Chapel Tuesday evening.
Doris S. Dawson
DURHAM - Doris S. Dawson, 91, of Woodman Avenue, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center.
Born Dec. 25, 1907, in Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of Ray R. and Ida (Duvall) Smith. She had resided in Durham since 1931.
She was a 1930 graduate of Ohio State University where she received her bachelor of arts degree.
She was an active member of the Durham community. She was involved with the Girl Scout program for many years and had been a Girl Scout leader.
She was a past president of the Women's Club of Durham, and for more than 20 years she was a member of the State Board of New Hampshire Federation of Women's Club.
She was a member of the Community Church of Durham and the Women's Guild.
For 35 years, she was a volunteer at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
She was a member of the University of New Hampshire Folk Club and the American Association of University Women.
She was the wife the late of Charles O. Dawson, who died in 1993.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary D. Cushman of Durham; and two grandchildren, Jeffrey W. Cushman and Sarah M. Cushman, both of Durham.
