Margaret W. Winchester
Died: Sunday, December 04, 2005
Age: 91
Former teacher, bridge enthusiast
WOLFEBORO - Margaret W. Winchester of Old Lakeview Terrace and Charlottesville, Va., died Sunday, Dec. 4, after several weeks at Huggins Hospital. She was 91.
A former teacher of French and English in Virginia and later in the New York pubic schools, she was born in Brooklyn, N.Y, the first of two daughters of Orland E. and Loto White.
Margaret received degrees from William and Mary College (BA) and the University of Virginia (MA) where her father taught genetics and botany. At Virginia she met and married a tennis playing engineering student, Dean S. Winchester, who predeceased her in 1980.
After a short while working at the Library of Congress during her husband's service in the Navy at the end of WWII, the couple moved to Schenectady, N.Y. and later to Baldwinsville, N.Y. near Dean's job at General Electric Park. Margaret taught English in Lafayette, N.Y., took a pause to have three boys, and after more courses at Syracuse University, returned to teaching, this time as the French teacher for Phoenix Central Schools. There she organized trips to French Canada and Paris for her students. She retired from teaching in 1981.
Since 1953, Margaret spent nearly every summer on an island in Tuftonboro. There she learned how to cook on a wood stove, how to row a boat, how to chop wood, and her swimming improved a great deal. In retirement she pursued her interests in travel and bridge. She visited India, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, Panama, Mexico, Jamaica, Hawaii, Canada, Alaska, Texas, Florida, Germany, and of course, her beloved France, always in the company of friends, or soon to be friends as she was very social, made friends easily, and loved being with a crowd. As her fellow bridge players can attest, she loved conversation and was often a winner. One was lucky to be her partner. Margaret's time alone was spent doing crossword puzzles.
After moving to Wolfeboro in the 1990s to be near her son and his family, Margaret joined the First Congregational Church and also worked as a volunteer at Huggins Hospital. She was also a member of the local DAR. She is survived by her children, David, of Wolfeboro, Donald of Antrim, and John of Charlottesville, Va., as well as two granddaughters, Arielle and Marion Anne.
No services are planned, but donations may be made in her name to the Democratic party, the Lakes Region Humane Society, Ossipee, or her church.
